    This video demonstrates the settings for your Nord Keyboard for the B3 Organ parts. If you have a Nord Stage or Nord Electro keyboards, it's very likely these settings will work for you if you are trying to replicate the sounds from the original song "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" from the group Procol Harum.
    I focused only on the right hand for this video and the sound settings for the B3 on the Nord Stage 3. If you want to learn the entire song (the organ part) you may find the links below helpful.

      Hi Michael! Ya, that Denmark performance is something else and I love the slower tempo and the expressive piano playing he's doing with it too. Then to have the choir kick in just brings it over the top. Oh, and there is a sample on our Nord keyboards that sound a bit similar to that choir. The name of the sample is called "Choir Mixed Soft" and it's pretty darn close to what you hear on that video. I guess I have a vivid imagination but my brain picked it out for some reason. 🤷

    Marc, thank you for a great tutorial on the sound construction for this song. I would love to get the lower manual settings for this also as i believe the lower manual has different drawbar settings. I will disagree on one thing however, i believe the rotary speaker was never in the off, but on slow, every time i saw them live and even on video. I think the slow setting is more flowing, when the left hand is applied with chords. Just MHO. Great job! will be watching more of your Nord videos!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 роки тому

      Hello @larry bartlett sorry for the delay on this comment. I was debating learning foreplay and making a video on it. Alas, it's going to take a while to learn that song well so, let me start out by saying that most are using either these settings: 888004422 or simply 888000000. You'll want the rotary speaker on slow too. I've also seen it listed as: 686004002. And there seems to be some debate over whether the percussion should be on or off. You can try the above settings to see if that gets you started. I still have on the long-range possibilities list for a video. Good luck with this and let us know if you find something that works well for the Stage 3 - thanks!

    I have a single manual Hammond XK-2 and 888800000 works just fine for me on WSOP.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bryan. Thanks for the alternate settings here and I agree that nothing can replace a genuine Leslie. And because the Leslie actually "moves air" as it rotates, etc., you can't beat the real thing.

    Thanks for the B3 settings. I’ve wanted to try this song for a long time. I listened to the concert video by the original artist you talked about. I liked his vocals and the piano, organ and symphonic accompaniment. The drummer was horrible. He made the song drag and sound like a dirge.

    • @MyKeysToMusic

Played many a gig with that board and it served me well for years. In any case, if you like good ol' J.S., Bach, you can check out the Symphobia strings demonstration here I cooked up. In fact, these very advanced samples work on your Electro 3 as well! (Granted, you may only be able to load one or two of these string samples at a time because they are relatively large and the Electro 3 has limited memory, etc.) Check it out here if you're interested to hear these in action: ua-cam.com/video/HN9WJNmkUKk/v-deo.html. • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Barney - nice to hear from you as always. Well, I have some great news. I recently discovered an amazing site for backing tracks that blew my remaining hair back in a big way. I'll give you the link for you to explore here: www.karaoke-version.com (Once at the site, make sure you click on the CUSTOM BACKING TRACK area) - that's the only way you're going to be able to pick and choose which instruments in the backing track to use or not use. If you purchase a given song, you can edit it and then make an unlimited amount of variations for export. You can choose with drums, without drums, with keyboards, without keyboards, keyboards only, with vox or without vox - just about any combination can think of. It's simply amazing. I can't wait to use this more in the future. So, I used a backing track from that site on the above video (had to reduce the volume of the guitar because it as a bit loud). But other than that, I simply exported the file without the organ part and voila! - instant backing track. I can't recommend them enough.
      Working with backing tracks would make a terrific video. I could discuss how to go about purchasing, editing, and exporting these backing tracks for us keyboardists who may want to have the power of having a band accompaniment for practice purposes, recording, or just for plain old fun. I'll add this to the long-range list. I have several videos in the queue ahead of this but this would make a prime candidate. Thanks for stopping by Barney!

    If you listen to the original recording, it sounds to me that the Leslie is in choral mode as per why the Leslie produces such a spacious sound that you hear on the recording. Also, the choral mode means that the horn and bass is spinning, throwing the sound evrywhere, where as in stop mode it does not. Just my 2 Cents! I always use the choral mode!

    Thanks for the shout out Marc, and great video! I’m just wondering what knob you turned before the chorus sound kicked in. Was it the rotary speaker knob? Or was it the stop mode button? Do you know why the harmonic third button doesn’t work in this song?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      Hi Mike - Thanks again for the video idea. So, the button I clicked was to set the Rotary Speaker speed button to "fast". The fast rotary speaker is what causes that chorus effect you're hearing - that is to emulate the fast-moving Leslie speaker. I also slow it down again (without showing you that on the screen). However, while clicking the slow/fast button like this, the "stop mode" button is always invoked. So, when the speaker is set to slow, it's actually not "slow" but rather stopped because the stopped button overrides that.
      If you had the harmonic third on, it would change the "sound" a bit on the organ and that doesn't appear to be what was used on the original settings for the 1967 original release. At least that's how it was described with the research I did. In testing it just now, I think adding the percussion third option changes the sound to something that doesn't sound like the original. Hopefully, I understood your question correctly.

      My Keys To Music Awesome! Can’t wait to try this out. I bought the FC7 pedal. Is there a way to activate the fast spin sound with the pedal ?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      @@mikecampbell4349 So yes, on The Nord Stage 3, you would assign the control Pedal to morph the "slow/stop/fast" button. Once you do that, as you move the pedal back and forth,, it will control the speed of the speaker incrementally from a full stop through fast. To do this you would:
      1) Click and hold the Control Pedal Morph button (top middle of the keyboard).
      2) While holding the button from #1 above, click on the "slow/stop/fast" button over by the rotary speaker section. You should see the "morph" light under that button turn green.
      3) Make sure you connect your Yamaha FC-7 pedal to the back jack labeled "Control Pedal"
      4) While playing the organ, you can move the pedal back and forth which should adjust the speed of the rotary speaker.

    On the original cut the organ was a Hammond M102?

    • @MyKeysToMusic

      Hello @Richard Young Yes I think you are right. According to this article, it was the M102: www.thisdayinmusic.com/liner-notes/youve-turned-a-whiter-shade-of-pale/#:~:text=The%20Hammond%20organ%20line%20of,clear%20references%20to%20both%20pieces.
      At the time I made the video, I lumped it into the B3 category (probably because that's what the Nord keyboard imitate). I should have done a little more research to better define the exact model used. But this comment sets the record straight I think. Thanks!

      @@MyKeysToMusic Grateful thanks for reply.I also assumed for many years it was a B or C until I read somewhere it was an M102.There is a noticable difference between the M and the B & C soundwise and more noticeable with all the higher drawbars out on the B and C. Also the M doesnt mimic the chorus (C3) tab on the B and C but the M drawbar setting and B setting for WSOP is such that these differences dont arise.At least to my ears.

      @@richardyoung641 Thanks for sharing your story here and your thoughts on the Electro 6. (I feel the same). You don't meet too many piano tuners in this world today so you are a special breed. I just saw Rick Wakeman in concert last weekend and he had a piano tuner adjust his piano hours before the show. Rick played the acoustic piano all night and told stories - it was terrific. But yes, we still need piano tuners! The Electro gives you the chance to emulate all these great instruments in the size and footprint that you can take anywhere. Continue to enjoy it!
