Hey! For different song parts, you could have different A/B panels? Like, when you select song part 1 you have a piano in panel A and an organ in panel b... when you select song part 1 you have a different piano in panel A and a synth in panel B...
Hello @Gonçalo Nunes Fonseca Sorry for the delay on this comment. For each song part, you get a totally different setup for panels A and B. Switching to a song part is nearly identical to switching to an entirely different program. So yes, it's very flexible and powerful in that way.

re memory protect, always check it is on when first unboxed, if it is off it could be a display model, this happened to me, exchanged it pretty quick.
@lofty1963 Tim, you are wise beyond your years! Another thing you'll see, too, is that often the knobs are all set to zero for a new board (or their middle position in the case of certain knobs where the middle is zero). If all the knobs are all over the place, that's another possible sign. However, yes, having the memory protection already set to "off" is something I've never seen on a new board. So glad you mentioned this. It's one of those facts that we all know about, but I never once mentioned it here as a UA-cam comment.
Another Pro tip: on a similar topic, there is something else to be aware of specific to the Nord Piano 5. There are two versions - one with Glide/Vibrato (the newer version) and one without. What happened to me was that I bought a new NP5, and what came was the older version! Now, it was still a brand new board - so it was an innocent mistake on the part of the retailer/distributor. Apparently, it had been sitting in a box from the early days, so it wasn't the newest version - but it was still new. So, like you, I promptly returned it for the newer version - one that had the Glide option. Oftentimes, the only way the retailers/distributors know one from another is to open the box. I assume, too, that most people (if they are new to Nord) would never in a million years think to ask: "Is this the very latest version with the newest panel and button options?" That is until they look in the manual and see a feature available that doesn't exist on their version! I assume, too, that a lot of people never crack open the manual - which keeps me in business over here, haha.

@Junko Kinoko Great question! Yes, the sound changes the moment you scroll to the next program. It cuts out right away. There is no "enter" key to speak of on Nord keyboards. Now if you had the sustain pedal on while switching programs, the notes sustained would still be heard even though the program was switched - this is called "Seamless Transitions."

How do I save layers in an empty slot on the Nord Stage 3?
Hi Rick. You have to select the "Store As" button. After doing that, you'll have an option to rename. Then you'll click "Store" again and you'll get the option to pick a location for the program. Then you'll click "store" again one last time to save it in that location. Pay close attention to the entire OLED display as you're working with it, it will guide you somewhat. Good luck!

Hello! GREAT VERY USEFUL TUTORIAL. I have a queston, i change sounds a lot with my Nord Lead 4 when i play live. Usually i use 3-4 songs per song.. Is there an easy way to pre-save these programs (something like the Song Mode?) Because i find myself having to manually change them with the knob. I do have 4 slots, but after every song i have to re-select other 3 or 4 songs per memory slot... Very crazy when you're playing live. Will be very useful to know if there's an easy way. Thanks!

Hello @Chris Rockyngham Well, I think you are referring to "Pedal Noise" which is something you get when you have the official "Nord Triple Pedal" only. Once you have that connected, then you can simply select the button that says "Pedal Noise" and you should hear the artifacts of playing with a real pedal. @marcokeys7203 Hello Marco! Thanks for your comment and question. I did some research on all this two nights ago. What you need to accomplish this is the LSB and MSB numbers, which is how the Nord recognizes switching to songs in Song Mode. That part is outlined in the Nord manual, so switching to the exact song won't be a problem. Camelot buries this setting deep on the iPad - so deep in fact, that I didn't have time to test it because I ran out of time. However, it "should" be possible to select the song itself from Camelot.
Now, what's unclear is how to switch to a given song PART, which is NOT outlined in the Nord manual. I do know that once you are in song mode, you can take another MIDI controller device (such as the MIDI Mouse: ua-cam.com/video/Me6X9eQ6gIk/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared) and have that move up and down through the song parts. So it might be possible then if Camelot can put you in Song mode and navigate you to song XYZ, then send another command from Camelot to move up or down a program X amount of times while switching Camelot scenes, then you might have it. But as you can see, it's starting to get complicated with multiple commands being sent from Camelot (if that's even possible), and we're heading into the realm of "monkey business" a bit.
What I recommend is taking this project in steps. Using Camelot, first, attempt to put the Nord in Song mode and select the correct song. You can find the exact range of LSB and MSB numbers in the Manual on page 57. If you get that far, give yourself a pat on the back. Then see if there is a way to select a song part by fiddling with the numbers sent from Camelot. You can experiment to see if Camelot can send a program up/down change too while switching from scene to scene, which might be the only way to get this done.
Please send an update if you decide to pursue this! Also, you can likely just prepare a ticket/request with Camelot directly. They should be able to tell you the best way to do this with their software and if it's possible. You can direct them to the Nord Manual, as well to get them in the right ballpark.

Camelot Pro can obviously switch between various scenes in a song, it is very easy…
But for me, the problem is how to assign the “scene switching” command to the Nord “physical” buttons in order to switch scenes in a Camelot song by simply hitting one of them
I’m the lead vocals and also the keyboard player of an acoustic Trio so i dont’t want to hit the “scene switch” button on the iPad anymore and stop playing with my left hand (praying to hit the right zone on the screen 😅) but just hit one of the 5 buttons right on NS3 panel…I can't figure out how to do it

So using a program called "MIDI Monitor" on my Mac, I was able to capture the MIDI signals coming from the Nord Stage 3 when each of the song parts is selected on a given song while in Song Mode. The output is as follows:

I think what would have to be done (somehow) is that Camelot (or some device to intervene) would have to interpret these program control numbers to switch a scene in Camelot Pro. The kicker is that the program numbers (shown above as 41, 42, 43, 44, and 45) would be different for every song in Song Mode from the Nord. For example, as I go to the next song up on the Nord keyboard, my program numbers change to 46, 47, 48, 49, and 50. The Bank Select numbers you see here too may also change from 0, 1, 2, etc. depending no how deep I am on the Song Mode list. So, I'm not sure there is light at the end of this tunnel or not based on the complexity of how Song Mode send's it output.
Another idea is to have the Nord Extern section pre-configured to drive a specific program change based on you selecting a program in Song mode. (You can use the Extern section to just switch programs without actually having to use the Extern section to trigger MIDI notes). This would provide a very specific program change command to Camelot. That would solve the problem of providing something specific for each part. But, what I don't know is exactly what MIDI commands Camelot Pro expects to receive in order for it to change from scene to scene or if that can even be acted upon by MIDI. Would need to do more research on this on the Camelot side of things.
would you care to recommend a high quality amplifier for live performing? My Stage 3 does not sound good through my Bose L1....
Hi Dave. I understand what you are saying here. I too have a Bose L1 (about 15 years old at the moment). Nord keys - especially the pianos like a stereo setup. You can also try putting your keyboard in "Mono" mode to see if that improves it a bit. As far as amplification goes, it's not my area of expertise. For live performance, I've been plugging directly into the PA and then they provide me with a monitor so that I hear my playing along with the front of house mix in my monitor. But this is not standard and not necessarily ideal for most people. Here is some reading for you:

@@MyKeysToMusic thanks for the quick reply. I'll check into those links. Keyboards puzzle me. I have this new Nord, a Korg Pa 1000, a Casio MZ-X500 and Casio Privia 560 and an old Yamaha DGX-300. Of all these, the Casio Privia 560 sounds the best through the Bose, and that's what I've been using for live performance. The Korg is horrible through the Bose.. can't figure out why because some of the pianos sound OK through high-quality headphones. But the sound that comes out of the PA is nothing like the sound in the headphones...
@@daveslastchance I know what you are saying. Try putting the Nord in Mono mode as the first thing you try. Can't explain the situation with the Korg. The Bose L1 is sort of a mono setup so perhaps that plays into this entire situation here.
@@benjamincrnjak9624 but what doesn't make sense to me is the mp3 piano sound is better than the sound direct from the keyboard. If I play a recording of ANY piano sound through the L1, it sounds better than the keyboard piano sound. Another thing.. my old Yamaha DGX-500, which was like $400 new, sounds better than my $2,000 Korg or $3,500 Nord Stage3! That's why I'm so puzzled. Is there a keyboard amp you would recommend? By the way, I had a Roland KC-550, and same problem.. keyboards sucked through it, at least to my ears.
@@benjamincrnjak9624 thanks. That helps. I have a small Roland KC-110 keyboard amp which is a stereo amp and has 6" woofers and 2" (?) tweeters. It puts out a pretty big sound for its size. I think I'm going to try that on my next gig and see how it sounds. Haven't had a gig since last Feb. due to the virus, so I have time to experiment.
But how do you get the Nord to switch songs seamlessly? When I try to change programs in the middle of a set by switching from one song part to the next, the sound completely cuts off as soon as I hit a number button to switch to the next song part. Doesn’t matter if I have the foot pedal engaged or keys pressed down or a keyboard hold... it just cuts of as soon as I hit the number button so there is an audible full stop before the next sound comes in.
Hello @AvalynGirl. First check this. On your keyboard, go into your system settings and on page 5, you'll see an option called: "Seamless Prog Change" - make sure that is set to "On". Try that first, and please report back!

What’s the difference between song mode and live mode? How would you use them in different scenarios?
Hi Omar. Great question. Let me see if I can sum this up:
Live Mode is a storage area that allows you to make quick and permanent adjustments without having to actively push the store button. It's a handy area if you have something you want to be stored for a particular performance and something that might be specific to a particular gig. Let's say for example you have a standard piano you normally like to play, But for this specific gig, you want the EQ adjusted in a certain way. You could copy your program with the piano over to live mode, make your EQ adjustments, and then your "go to piano sound" has been tweaked for that particular gig stored in live mode for the duration of that gig. It's basically a flexible area to work in for changes that can be made without having to commit to a permanent storage location, but also one you don't want to lose while you're working with it.
Song Mode is a place you can pre-program "setlists" or playlists for call back at a certain performance. It's really just another way to organize your programs for instant recall and provides you the flexibility to have several different ways you can organize your programs. And because song mode is a separate storage location, you can store and export songs/song lists to your computer by way of the Nord Sound Manager to build a library of programs for you without you having to reorganize your main program list each time.

Can the song part also store splits as well as parts, or is that handled by programs?
@garyusinger Great question! All splits are handled directly in a given program and stored there. However, while in song mode, you can apply a split "on the fly" and it works just fine. But there is no way to save it as a song. To save split settings, you have to go back to a given program and make your split adjustments there instead. Once you load the program while in song mode, whatever split settings you have saved will appear while in song mode.
*To recap:*
1) Song Mode doesn't directly save split info, but you have access to create a split "on the fly" while in song mode.
2) Programs save any and all split settings, and when calling up that program while in song mode, your program split settings will be loaded as well.
Tq for your video...I have a question... if we change program bank or live mode or song mode when we play a song, can we change it without cutoff the voice that we are playing before?
Hey Thomas. If you change programs or move in and out of live mode, it does a smooth transition. It's called "Seamless Transition" and it's a feature that is built into the Nord Stage 3 and the Nord Electro 6. Hope that answers your question.
My church’s Nord doesn’t do a seamless transition either, the voice cuts off as soon as I switch song parts. If you figure this out let me know, my worship pastor keeps asking me to do seamless transitions but the Nord won’t do it for me.
Another fantastic tutorial, Marc! Thank you. I do have a separate question though...Alongside my NS3-88, I just bought a NS3-Compact so that I can leverage its waterfall keybed to do more organ type stuff. While I"m practing at home, what's the easiest way for me to listen to both keyboards at the same time through my headphones? I'm guessing plug each keyboard into my amp and plug in my headphones that way but right now my amp is broken. Is there another alternative? Thank you!
Hello @Tony Schmidt Congrats on the two Stage 3 keyboards. That is "ultimate power"! haha. So there are few ways to go about hearing this in a single pair of headphones (and there may be more ways, but these are the ones that come to mind.
1) Get an Audio Interface. I use this one from Focusrite (Scarlett 18I8 - affiliate link): amzn.to/2ZgVvWf The interface buys you a LOT of nice options, especially if you were ever thinking of connecting your Nord keyboards to the computer at some point in the future. I have a video that shows you the basic setup here: ua-cam.com/video/UU6j5o3YfaA/v-deo.html This boils down to connecting both boards audio out to the interface and then connecting the headphones to the interface too. All audio goes through the interface.
2) You could invest in a simple mixing board. Nearly identical to the setup above with the interface, the mixing board allows you to connect two or more keyboards to hear them all at once. Connect both keyboards to it and then connect the headphones to the mixing board. Some mixing boards today offer the ability to have the sounds from the board go out digitally to the computer via a USB interface. This would provide you similar functionality to the audio interface mentioned above.
3) You could connect the audio out of one of the Stage keyboards to the "Monitor In headphone jack" of the other. This is the "very basic" connection for some quick results without having to add the complexities of the mixing board/audio interface. However, it's a one-trick pony and will provide a minimal set of functions. All volume would be controlled on either keyboard and it's good in a pinch, but I don't like it as a long-term pro setup.
* The moment someone has two or more keyboards and they want to play both at the same time, is the moment they introduce either an audio interface or mixing board that can handle two or more stereo inputs (which means 4 actual wires coming in.)

Hi Rudy. I think you could get away with the Stage 3 as your main (and only keyboard) if you wanted to. Then again, you could also connect the Stage 3 with MainStage and a computer and get the best of all worlds. But yes, many people use the Stage 3 as their main and only keyboard in a band. It's all a matter of how many sounds you need to be queued up at one time and how you want to arrange your keyboard rig.

Hello @Deja Gruv Band - (Great UA-cam name by the way), you can edit the song order via the Nord File Manager yes. To do so, you must first click the "Organize" button. From there you can drag and drop the song listings up and down the list. "Editing" is limited to renaming the song or program and you can also change the category of a program. You can't do any kind of detailed edits to the sounds themselves via the Nord Sound Manager.

Hello @Juno Synth (great channel name, by the way). Yes, for the most part, the Nord outputs are lower than other keyboards. But this does vary from keyboard to keyboard. For example, I have a Korg Minilogue XD, and the outputs seem to be no different (volume-wise) compared to the Nord boards. But I have heard, and I can also confirm, that the output volumes are on the "lowish" side for Nord products. So, a program contains information for the Piano, Organ, and the Sample/Synth engine at the same time. When you are assigning songs, you are actually moving programs around. So, first create a complete program (using your favorite organ, piano, and selected synth/sample).Then, save it with a name you'll be able to find later. Then that program will be available on the list when you make your set list (as I show in the video). Tried also using song mode on keyboard itself and it only offers piano sounds, nothing from synth or sample. Sorry this is newbie stuff and I may need to get digging further.
@@marcstewart5922 So, from within the sound manager, you'll first navigate to "Programs". Once there, you can right-click on any given program and it will offer you a chance to assign a sample/Synth directly to the program (relink). It will swap whatever you have there for a new one. You can also "duplicate" an existing program ahead of all that and then use that for your experimentation and testing. You can also rename a program by right-clicking it. So it works a bit like this:
1) Open Sound Manager
2) Navigate to the "Programs" tab
3) Right-click on any existing program and then select "Duplicate" (this will make a new version you can play with).
4) Right-click on the new program you just created and select "Relink" this will bring up a dialog of all the currently installed samples/synth sounds. From there you can assign it.
5) You can rename the new program you just created, giving it a name you'll be able to find later.
6) Double-click the program you just created, that should bring it up on your actual keyboard.
7) Audition the sound and repeat steps 4 through 6 so that you can experiment with adding new sounds to your new program. You can also reassign pianos using that same technique.

I did try your suggestion and while i could successfully duplicate a program, rename it and add the french horn sample as desired, there is a piano that was already in there that I can't seem to get out. When I make it show on the Stage 3 73 onboard screen I see the named program but only the piano. We've rented this instrument for a very soon upcoming Beatles show, and maybe bitten off more than we can chew for the short term. If we end up sticking with Nord I'll certainly look into your courses.
Hi Mark, thanks for the video. I'm wondering how you create a new song from scratch. So say I have a song 'In my life' which I've created (after following your tutorial) but how do I create a new song (with parts) from scratch? If I move the Program knob it brings up 'Song 1:02 Upright Pianos', Song 1:03 EP Pianos 1' etc - do I simply edit over this and create a new song here with a new name? I"m just worried I might edit/delete the existing bank of songs. Thanks Craig
Hi Craig. Thanks for your question. You can either write over the existing song from the factory or you can navigate to a blank song (let's say bank 1, location 11). There are 400 song locations on your Nord with 8 banks of 50 locations in each bank. Have a look at the Nord Sound Manager too - it's the easiest way to organize and rename songs once you've saved them on your Nord. For example, with the Nord Sound Manager, you can easily delete all 10 factory songs to make room and start with a blank slate. On another video (not yours) he showed the back of the Nord stage 3 ports. He said they were unbalanced, meaning you could experience noise / radio signals if your playing in a large venue . I am looking to purchase this piano and will be playing in a large auditorium. Is this true ? Because many years ago our band had this same issue with radio stations coming thru our sound system. By the way , you're videos are really helpful, great job !!

Wow, great question and one that comes up from time to time. This would make a good video to explain all this too I think.
First, I don't think you have a thing to worry about here if you will be using a professional sound system. Let me explain.
The Nord Stage 3 comes with 1/4 inch unbalanced line-level outputs for amplifier or recording equipment. It's a stereo instrument with separate signal paths for the left and right audio channels.
Now, I'm not a pro sound engineer by any means, but here's some info to get you oriented around this if you aren't already.
When you talk about playing a large auditorium, I assume you are going to use a professional PA/Sound system for it? First, there are a lot of ways this can be done and the technology continues to evolve. Traditionally you'd have a mixing board somewhere within listening range (typically towards the very back of the venue). Connecting the instruments on stage to the mixing board, you'll likely have a snake running balanced XLR cables from the stage to the mixing board. The snake is designed to carry signals over long distances with low noise like this. On stage, you should receive one (or preferably two) "DI Boxes" (A.K.A. Direct Inject or Direct Input boxes) where you will plug in your 1/4" left and right channels from either your Nord keyboard or a personal mixing board. (Some keyboard players who have multiple keyboards have their own mixing board on stage and send a completed pre-mix to the sound team as a pre-mixed left and right signal). But here's where it could really vary as many sound teams will have control over each keyboard from the main mixing board. Each architecture could be different, and all of this goes slightly beyond the scope of the question.
But now that I say all this, I could be describing a situation that is more complicated than what you are planning. If you don't have your own dedicated sound team at the venue, then the band could be using your own PA, where it is situated entirely on the stage (including the main mixing board). If this is the case, you could be close enough (let's say 25') to the main PA mixing board inputs. In this scenario, you'll have no problem with using a 25' 1/4 instrument cable and connecting it directly to the PA mixing board. So, just be sure to use 1/4 "instrument, line-level cables" for your setup and you should be good to go. If there is no "snake" and someone has asked you for a 50' cable to connect to the PA somewhere, then, yes, you're likely going to run into some trouble there and you are not set up correctly in my opinion.

Hi lukasz t. Glad you like the video! Songs save only the specific instrument used and that's called a program. THEN, the program is the thing that saves all the effects and other settings. So for example, a grand piano with reverb would all be stored as a "program" first. Then, the song refers directly to that program. So, if you want to change the reverb of that piano and have it stored within your Nord, you would store that at the program level. Then, the song just points to that program and will immediately adopt any settings you made with the piano program. Hopefully, that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

Hi Mark...recent subscriber..phenomenal videos thx so much. Almost ready to pull the trigger on a stage 3 compact. Question if you are able to get to it. Everything I have seen says the power of this keyboard is the ability to make the adjustments to the preset sounds. My question is can I adjust lets say a particular Organ preset to my liking, save that as song part one...and then use that same organ preset as a base sound for song part 2 but with different adjustments. In other words it saves the 'flavor' of the preset you are currently on at time of 'store'. Sure seems like it would. Thanks!!
Hello @toddk28 Thanks for subscribing and for your comment here! Getting close with the Stage 3 Compact decision eh? Great board - still one of my favorites of the bunch. The answer here is mostly no but let me explain.
Each preset you save (they are called "Programs" in the Nord world) has a unique name and a unique location. Songs and song parts are merely indexes that point to existing programs. So, each song part in fact points back to a particular program. When you build song parts you're telling the keyboard which program to play for that part. So, in your example, if you want to make a slight alteration between song part 1 and 2, each will have to be saved as its own program AND each program will have its own name. If you were playing the song called "Mr. Blue Sky" and you needed multiple parts, you would create a program called "Mr. Blue Sky 1" and "Mr. Blue Sky 2" each representing a song part. A quick side note: I worked on that song and found it to require 3 programs to pull it off due to its complexity. Yet, that doesn't surprise me since ELO plays that song live with no less than 3 keyboard players, 6 or more keyboards, and a mini-orchestra. Ok so with each subtle alteration of a song part it will, in fact, require its own program and you can have up to 400 stored programs. What you might find is that some song parts will use the same program over and over again like when you find that perfect solo piano or that stand-out Rhodes sound that you use on multiple songs for a performance.
Now, in addition to the songs/song parts you do have this thing called "Live Mode" which provides you 5 storage locations. Live mode is unique in that it instantly saves any tweaks you make to a sound. So you could have a favorite program you like but you want to make slight adjustments to it for a particular gig. You could copy (known as "Store As" in the Nord world) into Live mode. From there you can make your tweaks for that gig and it will be there ready for you at a moment's notice. Particularly useful if you have a favorite piano but you want to adjust the EQ for a particular room without messing up your original program. You can copy it to a slot in live mode, make your EQ adjustments, and use it throughout the gig.
Live mode is limited to 5 slots and it's not meant to be a setlist builder or anything like that. I think the name "Live" is appropriate for what that was created for.

Hey. Great stuff. I have a Nord stage 3 and am wondering if there is anyway to search for patches while still playing the same patch? Do you know a way to do this? I find it crazy after all of these years to not be able to do that. Thanks!
Hi Rocco. No way to do this on the board itself. The moment you start searching is the moment things change on the patch you are playing. Great idea however if we had the ability to temporarily "lock" the sound we were playing. This would come in handy too because sometimes I hit buttons on the panel during exciting performances/solos etc. So a lock feature would work for that too. For switching sounds, you could look at getting an external sound switcher and program like an iPad or computer. This would give you more control and perhaps would be a way to find programs easier too.

@@roccoofthesnow There are several options that you can use for external sound switchers. For the Mac computer, the one that comes up as #1 would be "Main Stage." You can also use "OnSong" or "Song One" which runs on either the Mac computer or the iPad. Not sure what's best to use with Windows.
Hi Mark. On the subject of simply selecting what sounds you are trying to program into a "Song": How can I simply scroll through the basic keys in a given bank, i.e. "pianos"? The trouble I'm having right now (I'm brand new to learning anything about my Nord Stage 3) is that when I follow your instructions on this video, I come to the part where you turn the PROGRAM knob to find sounds, and it is this seemingly random smattering of patched sounds (named "orchestral" somehow, which I'm sure is a clue to what's wrong here), rather than just going through through the basic raw keyboards. I'm just getting started so I'm not trying to dress up the sounds- I JUST want to program 3 or 4 keyboards per "Song" and this video has been super helpful, (so thank you), but there's the issue of not being able to find the actual keyboard I want. Can you tell me how to select sounds as the raw keyboards, like you would if you were simply dialing through organs to get to a B3? Or Italian Grand piano? Much appreciated.
Hi Sean! Thanks for your comment. I think I understand exactly what you are talking about here and I'm not sure you can ultimately get where you want to go precisely in the way you were hoping to. But, let me at least attempt to explain the situation the best that I can for you.
A "program" consists of multiple sounds engines along with all their effects that were already pre-defined at some point earlier (either from the factory or from you if you made and saved adjustments to any of your programs). So with that said, when you go to edit your songs hoping to assign song parts by simply calling upon a basic piano keyboard, for example, you are actually assigning "programs," not "sounds" (you are calling them keyboards in your comment). So, that can be frustrating if you just want to select a single piano sound, a single electric piano sound, a single organ sound, a simple flute, etc. As you have already noticed, Nord programs are previously "dressed up" and typically included with a fully edited soundscape often combining a synth with the piano, or an organ with a bass part, or a piano with some other "orchestrated" combination of sound engines working together as one complete unit and then named something that loosely describes it. This structure is what Nord calls a "Program." Other manufacturers sometimes call this a "patch." Furthermore, these programs are not really organized in a definitive sort order. For example, programs that are oriented around the focus of piano are not necessarily sorted together on the list. Instead, keyboard categories are sorted somewhat randomly in the list of programs.
Programs have their place of course, and on their own, these programs sound great (mostly) and allow a person to "demo" the keyboard instantly to gain a full appreciation of the power of the Nord Stage 3 simply by selecting the first program, then the next, and so on. In fact, when you watch some UA-cam videos on the Nord Stage 3, you'll often see people briefly demo the keyboard by playing the first program, then going to the next, one by one to demo it (without talking in some cases). So, I assume this is why manufacturers construct their programs in this way (for demos). This is not unique to Nord - it seems most handle their program creation and organization in this way and likely for this reason.
But when it comes time to answer the age-old question, "I just want a grand piano, called a grand piano without all the fluff" of these other soundscapes, you may find yourself having to edit your own programs first, then later assign these programs to a given song part.
Here is a recommendation for you:
1) First, learn how to manipulate and edit programs on your Nord Stage 3. Incidentally, I don't have an exact video describing how to do that. But it's a great idea for the near future. I do, however, have a video series that explains how to edit your programs using the Nord Sound Manager application that includes changing the program name, adjusting the program sort order on the list, and even manipulating keyboard/sound/sound engine assignment for each program. 2) Once you have mastered your ability to edit your programs and save those changes, it will be trivial to assign those programs as a song part as described in the video above.

Hi David! If you are not changing anything, you do not have to turn memory protection off. In fact, you can even edit songs and song parts on the fly without saving them if you'd like. But not sure that would be very effective. Certainly, if you are playing stuff already created, you are free to leave memory protection on all the time. In fact, that's a bit safer too if you are concerned about accidentally overwriting something while you manipulate the keyboard controls. Thanks for your question :)
Have not picked up the Nord Stage 3 yet but plan on it when I get it will probably go back and forth with the memory protection on and off!!!
I found that when I first got Nord keyboards (way back in the Nord Electro 3 days), I would tend to leave memory protection ON all the time. Then later (not on the gig), I would do my edits with protection off, then turn it back on again after the edits were done. I guess I felt safer to work that way. Nowadays, I leave protection off all the time and find that even in the middle of a gig, I'm "saving something" to a program on the fly so that I have whatever tweak I need for next time. Technically, that's what "live mode" is for but sometimes you find a tweak that you want to make permanant and you're ready to make that commitment right then and there and save it right to the main program you're using.
is there an app for nord sound manager that works on an i-pad and if so what generation of i-pad does it work on??
Hello @John McAvoy Unfortunately, the Nord Sound Manager, as well as the Nord Sample Editor applications both require either a Windows or Mac computer. However, neither application requires a very powerful computer and you can get away with an older or used computer to get the work done in most cases. If you do find yourself without a computer and this info means that you now have to invest in one to support your Nord keyboard, one possibility is to get a computer that can also support you in other ares of music recording as well as VST playback to enhance your possibilities. You can also use a computer for set list management, general musician business activities like accounting, performance scheduling, etc.
The iPad is perfect for electronic sheet music and things like that, but the computer is still the best for serious recording projects as well as sample sound prep, and the other things just mentioned. If it’s in the budget, a MacBook Pro would be a terrific companion to a Nord keyboard for example. Of course this sort of requires that you are already a fan of Mac OS. In the world of music production, the Mac is a platform that software manufacturers ready build for in all most every situation including Apple themselves with GarageBand and Logic Pro product offerings.
I use the iPad for chord charts and sheet music. I use the computer for everything else.

Whats the easiest way to switch songs or patches with minimal button presses? Most times I dont need "parts" just select a bank and patch?
Hi Scott. You have a few options if you just want to have let's say a regular stable of 10 programs to pick from and you want to do this in an easy way.
First. use the Sound Manager program to organize the programs so that you have your favorites all at the top.
Option 1:
Hold the Shift button while turning the program knob. It will immediately give you a list of your programs that you can turn to. (Note you can sort by name, number or category on that screen too if you choose to organize in different ways. The knob will display the list relative to where you are in the programming listing. So, if you always start at the top of the list, the knob will always have the top of the list there for you when you turn to it. Push shift again to get out of that screen.
Option 2:
Use the Page Up/Down buttons to navigate to the main area of your list, then use the buttons 1 through 5 to select within that page.
Note if you use option 2, you get the choice of having your page buttons represent either pages or "numeric pad". This will change how much the page buttons jump per push. Find this setting under the system menu on page 2 of that menu called "Program Selection Mode"

I have followed your instructions fine but I can’t seem to save any tweeks ie I have save an EP (cosmos) to song mode ok but I want phase on it and that doesn’t seem to save it resorts back to the basic setting, same with piano I’d like it to be bright but doesn’t save... any info on this would be great.. thanks for doing the tutorials

Hi Rob! Welcome to the Nord Stage 3 by the way. The compact is a great board. So, all enhancements are saved with the program/patch itself. So first, get out of song list mode and head over to the original program that you are using for that song. Then make your changes and save them using the Store button. Once saved with the program, any song that uses that program will have those changes.
In other words, you save your modifications at the program level (not at the song level). The songs merely point to an exiting program as there are no sound "tweaks" saved in the song. Keep in mind that if you use the same program in multiple songs, any enhancements to it will affect all the songs that use that program.

Hello Mark! I had the same question as Sean, regarding the song mode. When you edit a song you can't simply choose a specific sound, for instance piano or strings from the piano or synth section respectively. You can only assign existed programs (mixed of sounds) using the program knob. I really find it very frustrating having used a Korg for a long time. So, if I understand correctly I can only prepare my own sounds (programs) and then assign them in a song part, right? So in case I want to save a grand piano in a song part, should I create a program with a grand piano sound and then assign it to the song part I want? If yes, how can I do that? And something even more complicated. If I want to save a grand piano with delay or any other effect, how can I create a program like that and then assign it to a song part? It would be great if you could prepare a video, demonstrating how to create your own programs and adding effects. Thanks & sorry for the long comment.
and something I forgot to mention earlier. Is it possible to create a program with two or even more sounds layered or split the keyboard to 2-3 zones and save that in a song part? So for example, I'd like to have a grand piano layered with a synth in song part 1 & strings/brass/piano in 3 different split points in song part 2. Is this possible? Hi Nick! Thanks for your questions. You are 100% correct in your assumptions. Song parts are in fact pointers to actual programs (not individual sounds). As a reminder, a program is made up of all the settings for all 3 sounds engines along with effects. So, yes, that means in order to have a grand piano for use in one of your song parts, you first have to have a program that is made up of a grand piano. The good news is that once you make a program called "Grand Piano" for example, can easily assign any number of effects, splits, and settings you'd like. And a program also controls both panel A and B as well. The Nord Sound manager (see my Nord Sound Manager Videos) can be a help in renaming and organizing your programs and then you can make the final tweaks (for effects, split points, etc.) on the Nord Keyboard itself. Then, when you like what you have with a given program, you can save it and later use that in a song part and then save the song. I think you are right, there needs to be a video to explain how to create, modify and save programs and that video could act as a foundation for anything more advanced.
Nick, this is no problem at all. The very nature of a "program" in the world of Nord means that all these settings you mentioned are saved. Therefore when you are in song mode and switch between song parts, you are able to do everything you mention above because your song parts are actually just pointing to a program. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your question Claudio. Transpose settings can be stored in each program. Then, when you use those programs in a song, whatever you originally set in the program will be used when you click on the Transpose button (even in song mode). So, you can't store transposition settings while in song mode independent of the program. Whatever you have set in your program settings, the program selected in song mode will adhere to the program settings. Hope that answers the question and thanks for watching!
Hi Mark, do you know a lot on the Korg Kronos? I was in the music store and it seemed like the Korg was easier to program or just find sounds. The Kronos also has “famous” sounds like Baba O’Riley. For a wedding band, which keyboard do you think is more suitable?

I think if you were to get one keyboard that can give you a variety of sounds (let's say for a cover band or a wedding band) and also very decent piano, the Kronos would be a strong pick. However, it's a bit like apples and oranges. Remember, most everything on the Nord is available as a knob or button which can affect your live performance immediately (without having to dig too deep in the menus). The Kronos will require a lot more menu manipulation/programming to make adjustments live mainly because it's a workstation keyboard and perhaps demands a bit of pre-programming ahead of the gig. So, when it comes to performances like at a wedding where you are typically playing straight covers, pre-programming is sometimes the name of the game and you see advantages in that respect going with the Kronos if a single keyboard is going to be used and you want "any sound under the sun" as a potential option. With that said, I don't have first-hand experience with the Kronos, so take my very initial impressions of it with a grain of salt.
The kind of performances I find myself doing and the types of bands I perform with demand lengthy solos over original music where "tweaking my sounds" happens in real time on almost every number and is part of the performance (think Phish). I think it's hard to beat the "on the fly" capabilities of the Nord. In addition, Nord simply has great piano, organ and electric piano sounds which are hard to beat in my opinion. So for me, Nord has been my pick for the last several years starting with the Nord Electro 3. Now with that said, I still find myself connecting to other keyboards/sound modules to supplement various sounds from time to time. The Steel drum example is one such case where I have yet to find an adequate sample/substitute for Steel Drums/Steel Pan, and as such, I use a Roland sound module for that particular sound: ua-cam.com/video/YyfWnqmsshM/v-deo.html

Hey, got a question, cant find help anywhere online so don't know if it's possible or not.
I play with a korg kronos 2 with a nord stage 3 on top.
I play many sounds split up into many sections on the kronos and incorporate ns3 sounds into my kronos combinations via midi. I have set up ns3 panel a and b as separate midi channels and bring them into the 16 channel mixer on my kronos to control separately....
So my question (to make like easier) is this....
Is there a way to control program changes on the nord through the kronos without using global mode....using global mode will play the ns3 sounds on the kronos without having the usual control of the assigned panel a and b midi channels
Hello David! Sorry for the delay in this response. So, in order to change programs on your Nord keyboard from an external keyboard or device, you need to do that using the Global MIDI channel. That's the only way it can be done as far as I can see. If you could somehow isolate your program changes from the Korg to the Nord in a separate channel, then I think you might have something there. For example:
On MIDI channel 1, have your Kronos set to send program changes to the Nord. Also on the Korg, make sure channel 1 is not sending MIDI notes (somehow). Is that even possible?
On Korg MIDI channel 2, control Panel A of the Nord.
On Korg MIDI channel 3, control Panel B of the Nord.

Great video! Is possible to have a playlist of twenty or so different patches (programs in Nord lingo) and be able to switch quickly just by pressing the buttons (without having the need to scroll)?
Hi Walt! Yes, if you create a song list (and push the song mode button where the Nord Stage 3 is actually in song mode), you could easily organize 20 or so programs in a row. Then you would use the Page Up/Down buttons to move up and down in the list of 20 one by one. You can also consider using the Nord Sound Manager software as another way for you to quickly make a song list like this.
Note that these same Page Up/Down buttons in program mode will NOT move you up a single program one by one, but rather, page by page (so don't let that throw you). So, the one by one option only works in song mode when it comes to the Page Up/Down buttons. (Tip: You can find the Page Up/Down buttons just below the program dial in the center of the Nord Stage 3). Good luck and report back if you can. Thanks for watching!

@@walt686868 Hi Walt. It's possible to set your Nord into "Numeric Pad" mode found under the systems menu (page 2). Make sure you have updated to the latest Nord operating system or you won't see that listed as an option. I have a video on how to update your Nord OS if need be.

Hello @Elivelton Fagundes Unfortunately, no. For that functionality, typically a sequencer is used. Nords don’t come with sequencers. You’d have to incorporate an external hardware unit or software running from a mobile device or computer and then connect to the Nord via MIDI.

Hi Marek. The Nord Electro 6 doesn't support the footswitch to navigate songs/programs like the Nord Stage 3. That's because the Stage 3 has a dedicated input jack in the back labeled "Program Up/Dn pedal." This port to accommodate a footswitch pedal for this function doesn't exist on the Nord Electro 6. My Keys To Music That nord stage again!🙂 Seems like electro has it all but stage is so much convenience and less restrictions. How do you find the Hammer Portable 76 keyboard on stage after a while? Would you recommend it for piano centered musician?
@@marekwinski8854 I think for a piano centered musician, the 76 HP isn't too bad. The 88 I hear is better. It's my understanding that the Nord Piano is outstanding for pianists. For me (largely a synth player), if I were to do it all over again, I think I would go for the compact or maybe the 88. But the 88 is just so large that, I'd only do that if I was going to use it in the studio as a fixed instrument. I would not enjoy lugging the 88 keys around to the gig. Not only that, some of the small stages don't accommodate a beast that large on the gigs that I do. If I was a piano centered musician and I had a deep interest in Nord, I would consider the Nord Piano or the Nord Stage 88. If you think you'll be doing a lot of gigs with your instrument, I would go no larger than the 76 key (which is what I did). But that's me. Everyone is different. What I play on is not as important (for whatever reason) as to how easy it is for me to pack, move, carry, unpack, etc. Now, if I did very few gigs, I'd be very excited to have the 88 key. Not sure any of this helped you but good luck with your decision!

I read at the nord forum one could change program with a midi foot controller (as a standard midi cc signal). Could you please confirm that this is possible (eg. change the program on nord electro via midi signal from other midi controller like nord stage or any other thing)? How to do it?
@@marekwinski8854 Yes, a MIDI pedal controller should have no problem making a program change request of the Nord stage (or any MIDI-capable keyboard that can accept program changes). The pedals have to be programmed (and some have reported that this is the tricky part). The Nord keyboard uses banks and locations so the MIDI device needs to calibrate itself in a way to be able to select the correct program within the Nord. It won’t let me edit the sound. I’m trying to edit a Farfisa organ sound and store it to song part 2. How do I get the edited sound to store?
Hi Joe! Did you make sure to turn off the memory protection? Go to the system settings (under the first page of those settings). You'll see something called "Memory Protect". You have to turn that off in order to store your sound. The sound/patch is technically called a "Program" in the world of Nord.
