- Ashed tinder...there really is no comparison. The non-ashed cotton fabric will ember up readily while exposed to the heat source but then immediately go out when removed from that source... The ashed cotton fabric will readily accept a spark and then with aerating grow that spark into a hot enough ember that will ignite to flames the cotton fabric. Come see the experiment within. You are an excellent source of Firecraft information sir.
thought i knew everything about starting fires, thankyou
A cotton string will retain an ember without ash. So, a string made from cotton t-shirt should hold an ember without ash also. Nevertheless, it is simply wonderful to see how well the ash works on that cloth! Thanks David, that tip could be a lifesaver. I am going to learn so much from your demonstrations. Did you ever see Professor Julius Sumner Miller? He was a genius similar to yourself.
Lol. Could you make that ember ignite tinder to flames?
Thanks for the video David. After watching one of your videos i tried the fire roll & it worked great
I will try it in the bush and see how it works. Thanks from Alberta.👍
Great to hear! Thanks!
Very nice I'm trying it too. But thnkx David west for ur video I'm serious about fire starters for survival.

A very interesting experiment, David.
Thanks friend.
Thanks Edu!
2 thumbs up David West. I really enjoy your videos. Your experiments are different than most other videos. Keepem coming.
Thanks Al!
Hello David, great informative videos as usual. Instead of wood ashes in the fire roll, how about fine ground charcoal dust in the fire roll? Perhaps the black charred scrapings from an old burnt log. Go on, try it and make a video.
I already use charcoal. ua-cam.com/video/FugXhC6i_Dw/v-deo.html. Everything logical has already been tried. Please see my fire roll playlist.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl just goes to show, the one that got away. Great channel, all honest and instructive videos...!👍👏👏👏
Thanks friend!
That's 😎 cool
David, Thanks . I was about to ask you why you use ash so often. Still not clear why, but used this on an old "ShamWow" cloth. I was amazed how quick it caught. Thanks
Not sure what you're asking. Thanks for dropping by.
David, Actually it was just a comment. How I used some ash on some material, and it worked much better than material alone. My question would be Why does ashes help? Thanks for the videos, I learn so much!
I'M not sure. Ashes have a lot of interesting qualities Here's the common response I give when people ask me about the fire roll.I can't tell you about the chemical reactions. I can tell you what I know about ashes. They make a Hand Drill spindle 3 times more grippable, they allow the top and bottom boards to grip a Fire Roll well enough to compact it enough to drive it, any tinder impregnated with ashes will become a super coal extender (search my channel for ash, coal extender), ashes insulate... So, I'm thinking that the fibers coated in ash are forced to rub against each other creating INTENSE heat, all the while this intense heat can not escape because of the insulating properties of the ash so it gets even hotter, until finally the distressed fibers allow a pathway for all that heat to make its way from the center, to the outer fibers and the air that completes the ignition process. PLEASE check out my... How to fire roll video. Thanks!
Hope that's not Grandpa's ashes you're using there, David. Seriously, though, another important video. Great experiment!
They were Gramps' ashes , he died lighting a fire .
good job David
Thank you!!!
Good information good video
Well, tomorrow I will have to ash dust some charcloth to see what happens
great video
Everything you can think of has been tried, pretty much. Let me know how it turns out.
Some how I must have missed this video a year ago - but I wonder how dryer lint would work with the mirror experiment? Also thanks for the almost daily videos - I think we all enjoy and look forward to them. Thanks!
Let me know on the dryer lint. Thanks!
Thank You. .
So why does this work? What's going on with the ashes that does this?
MY guess... ashes doesn't let much heat escape but does allow much oxygen in.
