For the record, i'm still not 100% well, this was filmed in a hot shed during summer, and i'm having to move 150 odd board games around, all after a full days parenting of a relentless toddler. So if i sound a bit out of breath at times, that's why. Anyway, I raised a lot of questions in this video and i'd love to hear your thoughts on them.

My recommendation for taking care of your recovering health while also working through your backlog is to start with simpler games in each of your categories while going from simpler to more complex. Tiredness makes reading and processing rules (plus strategizing during play) twice as long so while you still aren't 100% well. That might help you slowly regain those cognitive skills, physical endurance and give you a sense of progress all at once (especially since dealing with shorter ones will make that shelf shrink faster). I'm that severe chronic fatigue person from last time (and ko-fi) ;) When I have a flare, my shorter and less complex games get at the top of my play list. When I suddenly have more energy, then I can dig into a medium one, and it helps me get back to the more complex ones. I learned the hard way lol Spent so long with brain fog trying hard to get to my most desired games (heavier ones) but they took so long to process and even hurt to play. So I'm wiser now and work my way back from a flare instead. :)

Love to see some GMT reviews, esp. COIN or anything Mark Herman has designed such as Pericles, Fire in the Lake. So crunchy, but so good, once you have some plays under the belt.

I totally get the concerns about conflict of interest regarding GMT Games. With a big disclaimer at the start, I'd love to see videos doing a breakdown for those (like me) who have yet to play a COIN game, even if it isn't a formal review. Given that you clearly loved them enough to want to design your own, I imagine you can talk pretty eloquently on why they are special and who might be interested in playing them.
I'm probably in the minority, but I love seeing videos about niche or unusual games, even if I can't easily obtain them. Probably not appropriate for the classic "in 3 minutes" review, but maybe bundled up in a longer video as "here's a bunch of interesting oddities".
I haven't played Irish Gauge yet, but its sibling Iberian Gauge is a fascinating lighter game of stocks and shared infrastructure. Really cool experience in a relatively short playtime.
My 6 year old is a huge fan of the critter meeples and cute cards in My Lil' Everdell, and it's definitely at a good complexity level for her, although her attention span still makes it a bit of a struggle to finish a game from time to time :) Her favorites so far have included Love Letter, Skull, Skull King, Sheepy Time, and a little dexterity + memory game called Turtle Splash.
    Cheers!

Would love to see you do GMT. Many of us watch your videos because we have learned your biases. Your opinions, factual comments and impressions, coupled with what we know about what you like makes it very easy to decide if the game you are reviewing is for us.
Do not be concerned about perceived bias, please keep reviewing everything you think you should!

She might like Pick-A-Dog. Nothing but a deck of square cards. No numbers or words to read. Just grab the card that is either exactly the same or has exactly one difference from your starting card and, after that, the previous card. Then you say STOP when no further cards qualify. If all your cards have exactly zero or one difference from the previous card in the stack, you keep all your cards and get a bonus one of your choice from the table. But if you made a mistake in your pile or if you could have added one more card to your pile, you lose all of your cards.

I only recently got into Memoir '44 (been sitting on my shelf for awhile), a fairly light tactical 'war' game that doesn't take too long to play. And I enjoyed it so much, that I invested in a fair bit more content for it. Really like how more mechanics are added with each new expansion. It's a keeper for me.

They have a barrier of entry for sure just with the complication...so I think your viewpoint on it can really help people determine what might be in it for them to make that investment. Love this video...

Honestly of that whole pile the only one I would keep is Near and Far. Its not just a campaign game, it can be done in one session too, maybe that side of it could make a good 3 minute video? Especially if it's holding you up for other red raven games. That's a pretty impressive catalog to be missing out on. Plays best at 3 but runs well at 2 too. Figure in 30 mins per player for your one and done.

I picked up a copy of Feudum for a good price and put it in the too hard basket for over a year. I've played it 3 times now, and like it more with each play. It's kind of a glorious mess that feels like it should have had some editing, but on the other hand I'm not sure I'd change much. It's one of those unique auteur designs that is a fulfilment of the designer's vision, and it works. But if you only play it once a year, it's a bear to re-learn.

I'll put a plug in for Flash Point: Fire Rescue! When I saw it on your shelf at the start of the video, my eyes went straight to it. I love Pandemic, but getting that game on the table with my CHILDREN never happened. I wasn't sure why until I played Flash Point with my kids. The setting and scale is SO much more relatable to children than Pandemic's "disease across the globe". Also, the base game of Flash Point is the BASIC game (without individual player roles etc.), which makes it easy to introduce to children (and other learners) before adding the richness that all the "advanced" options do. If "learning" is also a part of the appeal of a family game, this subject matter is also great for raising kids' awareness of a serious topic in a fun way. (But let's be honest: the strongest appeal to my kids is rescuing the cat and the dog - apparently they are FAR more important than the fellow humans!)

I'd like to see those "children friendly games" of bigger box games like that Everdell one. Recently if a game has a smaller footprint and complexity, like the smallbox Ticket to Ride, I prefer to get those because my wife and I enjoy the relative complexity and time committment they provide. (We are also suckers for cute animal games too). We also play small games like Railroad Ink (the original, basic one) and Qwixx - gives enough choice to still be a game but not a main course meal. So im curious as to how games that are 'marketed towards children' hold up to being a "nice quick game that is still interesting enough for adults".
It's cool to see bigger games that are able to boil it down while able to still present the same mechanics. There's a lot of creativity that goes into making a game smaller

I think it's really ironic how both times you tried to play Bristol 1350 you got sick, since that game's theme is centered on the plague.
I think you should give PUSH a chance even though everyone who sees it will ask "is this Uno?" Which it definitely isn't. It's an incredibly simple push your luck game but it has gotten lots of praise when I'm playing with newer gamers or my family (and also my normal gaming group but only when we're drunk).
You skipped over Hidden Leaders in your video. It was a kickstarter game, I only got around to play it once, but it was fine. Nice ideas, great artwork, I have to try it again.
You should definitely give Irish Gauge (and Iberian Gauge) a try out. The combination of economics, trains, uneasy co-operation are fantastic, and these games are much easier to get into and more beautiful than the other games in this genre. They're both in my top 50 games.

23:02 Near & Far isn’t only a campaign gain, you can do a one shot, pick your map and play. Sure, the richness will be in the character mode or campaign but you can do a one shot. Advocating for it because Above & Below was a first for me in the hobby and Near & Far was shortly after and they are amazing. Until Sleeping Gods came out N&F was by far the one people pointed to most of Ryan Lakaut’s games. Now, Sleeping Gods is but of course he’s done a version two that is streamlined and quicker to set up and blah blah so people will probably say that is 1A and Sleeping Gods is 1B but N&F is 2, with some people saying Islebound as the dark horse underdog sneaky number 2.

    • @WhatUpRob

Kings dilemma, however, is excellent. There's some Jank, there are some Win More mechanics so I'm really looking forward to the sequel as it'll hopefully sort out some of the issues

It's totally OK to have biases and opinions - it's impossible to avoid them. If you declare these upfront you can absolutely review GMT and COIN games. They don't get a lot of coverage in mainstream board game channels, so it would be a shame to not cover these. You do you, and your audience will respect you for it.

    My thoughts on a plan:
Tier 1, hot/recent games: Frosthaven, Dune game, Clone Wars, Lil Everdell, Maglev Metro, Starship Captains, Cascadia, Calico
Tier 2, your interest/any order: (listed as they appeared in the video) Flashpoint, Pret-A-Porter, Mosaic, Libertalia, Tidal Blades, The Spill, Strogonov, Star Dew, Clank, Taverns of…, 1 of the Century games (same thing different skin; Golem), Praga…, Trajan, Russian Railroads
Tier 3, filler/sprinkle in: Modern Classics lists, Old Games, GMT
Everything not listed I would say is the ruthless, don’t bother, sell pile because I haven’t heard about any of them from any other content space and I would plenty of DT, MvM, Boardgameco, Heavy Cardboard, Quackalope and I may have missed one. Hope that was helpful.
