    I like this old MEME that was going around. It’s a picture of a ‘64 Washington and it says “ in 1964 the minimum wage was 5 silver quarters,
    In 2015 , 5 silver quarters melt for $15.15.
    We don’t need to raise the minimum wage, we need to fix the money.”

      It's amazing to think that you could put away some silver bullion somewhere, you could hide it in a box, forget about it, wars could come and go, fiat currencies could emerge and eventually collapse into oblivion, market booms and crashes could come and go, but 100 or 200 years later, that boxes of coins could be uncovered by someone down your lineage and they will have have maintained their purchasing power and are still completely tradeable and valuable for the same real world value they held when you first acquired them.

    I was a postal clerk and I used to get silver coins occasionally from customers. I knew they were valuable, but I would always give them to my boss. He collected them. I usually got the days off I wanted. The only thing I ever regretted not keeping was a counterfeit $50 I got once. I had to give it to the police unfortunately.

Hoping to have my first monster box filled in the next two months and at that point I will get more junk silver. I've used 1964 silver as a measure for all kinds of true value. It can tell me how my income stacks up to what my father made during his working life because he was paid in silver. (He made about a silver dollar per hour and raised a family on it.) My retirement income including ssi is just little bit more than a silver dollar (ASE) per 40 hour week today. Plus all my time is "my time". I'm in the check out generation but still going strong, in good health and with all my teeth. Play around with it. It might just surprise you.

    Regarding 5:05, in 1964 the price of silver had increased to $1.29 per troy oz. If the price of silver was to continue to rise to $1.38 per troy oz., then the bullion value of silver coins would equal their face values. The U.S. Mint realized that their seigniorage would no longer be lucrative if they continued to produce 90% silver coins. That is why in 1965 the U.S. Mint eliminated 90% silver from their quarter dollars and dimes and switched their composition to the new cheaper cupronickel clad sandwich around a copper core. This peculiar composition was selected because such coins could still be accepted into vending machines and parking meters. Therefore in 1965, there was the situation in which 90% silver coins co-circulated with the new cupronickel clad coins and both types had the same face values. That meant according to Gresham’s Law savvy people soon realized the profitability for hoarding as many 90% silver coins as they can lay their hands on and to spend instead the new cheap cupronickel clad coins at the same face values. At that time, banks still had large inventories of rolls of 90% silver coins which hoarders could buy merely at their face value although their silver bullion value had exceeded their face value. That meant, for example, you could spend a cupronickel clad 25¢ coin to buy a 90% silver quarter dollar and repeat these equal face value exchanges until the bank or store ran out of silver coins. Then move on to the next bank or store and do the same. Ultimately 90% silver coins disappeared from circulation and were hoarded into collections such as junk silver bags. Furthermore the last opportunity to redeem silver certificate dollars for physical silver from the U.S. government was on June 24, 1968 at which time the price of silver had almost doubled to $2.48 per troy oz. To obtain silver bullion in exchange for your silver certificates, a holder of silver certificates must present them in person at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York or at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco or at the United States Assay Office in New York or at the United States Assay Office in San Francisco. As another example of seignorage profit made by the U.S. Treasury Bureau of Engraving & Printing, it costs 15.4¢ to produce each $100 Federal Reserve Note. That means its seignorage is $100 - $0.154 = $99.846 which is a huge profit for printing the fiat currency. There are not many things that someone can manufacture for only 15.4¢ each and sell it to willing buyers who pay $100 each. On the opposite end of seignorage, it currently costs the U.S. Mint 2.06¢ to make each one cent coin and 7.53¢ to make each nickel 5¢ coin, because the costs of copper, nickel & zinc have risen a lot over the years. In the past, one cent coins used to be made from 95% copper + 5% tin & zinc. That lasted until October 22, 1982 when their composition was debased to copper plated zinc. Its copper veneer over a zinc core is merely to mimic the appearance of what was once known as a red cent.

      For people that know of history, they know silver and gold is real money. Trouble is, most people don't know history, they rather be ignorant. A friend of mine frequents yard sales and stumbled upon one 4 summers ago. He looked at a jewelry box and saw a gold coin attached to a gold chain in the box. He picked it up and knew it was real gold, he went to the lady and asked how much she wanted for it. She said, $3. My friend tried to contain his excitement, and told her very cooly, alright. That gold coin was a British sovereign from the 1880s and together with the gold chain, was worth about $2,000. So, there are tons of ignorant people out there.

      Look for it to be made of "Sterling Silver" which by definition is 92.5% purity. So might see an "SS" or "925" designation to signify this. However, sometimes this purity might not extend to the entire utensil. Maybe only the handle might be this purity and the utensil part might only be "silver plated" which is pretty worthless in comparison to the Sterling Silver part.
      Also if the "silver" is tarnished, I think that is a sign that it is the "good stuff."

      It means to retain your purchase value despite inflation. For example if in 1964 you could buy a gallon of gas for a quater. In 1974 because of inflation, gas costs 2 quarters BUT a 1964 silver quarter is worth two quarters in 1974 so by saving your 1964 silver quater, you retained your buying power despite inflation (or a hedge).

      I kind of like the term "junk silver" ... because this terminology may help keep certain people who really don't deserve to own it, away from it (you know who they are) ... to create greater availability (& lower price) to the people who do realize what it is. But it seems like many people are catching on, as the premium on so-called "junk silver" continues to rise significantly.

    I'm not sure whether or not the buying power of silver in 1964 is the best reference point. Silver quarters dated 1964 contained the same amount of silver as the quarter dated1890. Determine how much a quarter in 1890 would buy and, theoretically, your junk quarter ought to equate to the same buying power today. Constitutional coinage is undervalued by much more than people realize regardless of whether or not silver bullion goes up and someday that will be recognized. Gold already has realized it's 1890 value.

    And in Escondido, California (30 miles north of San Diego) you could buy middle grade gasoline for 25.9¢/gallon. The cheaper grade was 23.9¢/gallon. This was valid in the early to mid 1960s. I know this from personal experience. Escondido was in a permanent Gas War -- a concept not known these days. So that part of your story is valid.
    These days, of course, California has the most expensive gasoline in the nation. Democrats will do that to you.

    The "value" of those Silver coins is not based on their face value as money. It is based (notwithstanding any attached premiums) on the spot price of Silver *as a commodity.* This means that the value of a given unit of Silver, whether an old coin, a round, or a tube of .999 shot, does not have a set transactional denomination. That .90 Silver quarter might be worth 2.50 today, and more or less tomorrow. Worse, its value is affected by ETFs (exchange traded funds) which allow people to trade in the current *price* of Silver, without ever actually owning any physical metal. Oh, there are provisions for taking delivery of the trade in physical metal, but nobody really does that. Instead, those trades are for theoretical quantities of Silver *which do not exist,* except on paper. Thus, the market value of Silver is also affected by a kind of inflation, as the volume of trade is many, MANY times the actual volume of physical Silver on the market, and those playing at "buying Silver" suppress the value of physical metal. THAT is why Silver hasn't broken out as we have been expecting for many years.
    Silver as "money," that is, Silver coined to be used at a specific set face value, fights inflation. The problem then becomes minting coins at a material cost which doesn't exceed the face value, which creates a whole, new set of issues regarding mine production and the relative values of Copper, Silver, and Gold minted in denominations directly related to one another. Of course, it also spikes the guns of all that fiat currency "printing," whether paper and ink, or digital 1s and 0s. And the powers that be won't surrender the power that gives them. So think of your PMs as commodities, for now, remain aware of the issues of mine production and the gaming of the COMEX by the banksters, and hope we never have to use PMs for barter in an economic collapse. ='[.]'=

    I love holding gold and silver in my hands, and it GENERALLY works decently as an inflationary hedge. Though not if you bought silver when it was $45 an oz, and then dropped to $14 a decade later. Or if you bought aluminum for $17,000 (2019 dollars) in 1850, for that same pound to only be worth about 35 cents today, due to advancements in refining technology. And that unpredictability in precious metal value, compared to all other goods and services an economy creates, is the main reason tying an economy to a fixed money supply is a terrible idea. If the economy grows faster than gold or silver can be dug up and refined, you get deflationary pressure that causes the value of precious metals to increase, which is why it's a good hedge against inflation, but if it's being used as a national currency, it encourages people to spend less of it, because they believe it will be worth more tomorrow, which slows spending, contracting the economy. This might be somewhat helpful to tamp down runaway economic growth (if such a thing exists, which even if it could exist, I don't think it would be a bad thing: If everyone could have 10X as much stuff without having to work 10X as hard, would that be a bad thing? I don't think so.) but it is disastrous during a recession if the government can't encourage growth by increasing the money supply. During a recession, if the money supply is fixed, and people stop buying things (demand drops) then prices fall which causes deflation (money is worth more, so people hold on to it even tighter, buying even less) which creates a vicious cycle. The only way to escape that cycle is to encourage spending, and the only way to do that is to devalue the money people are holding, through inflation, i.e. printing more money. Now of course, this has to be CAREFULLY managed, to avoid runaway inflation, but the point is, we have the capability to carefully control the money supply for any given economic situation with a floating currency. We do not have that ability with a fixed money supply, if money is tied to a finite commodity. And then of course you run into the problem of runaway inflation if the supply of that commodity suddenly outpaces the economy, for example during gold rushes in Alaska and California. Now instead of a central organization whose charter is to create a stable economic atmosphere by carefully adjusting the money supply to meet a target inflation rate of around 2-2.5% per year, the money supply is being controlled by miners whose charter is to maximize their own profits. And eventually you reach an equilibrium as the value of gold or silver drops due to the inflationary pressure of finding all that new money, but not until your personal wealth has been devalued by that drop. So the miners get rich, and your savings lose purchasing power. That instability in value, based on random chance (a miner finds a new large deposit, or creates a new, more efficient mining or refining process, etc), leads to major instability in short term pricing. Over the long run those fluctuations even out, but the point of currency is for it's purchasing power to remain stable, and if it is being devalued (due to inflation) the devaluation rate should be consistent, and not based on random variation of mining production levels.
    Anywhoo, that's my rant about tying an entire economies value generation to a handful of commodities. Using those commodities as a hedge against other economic pressure is a good way to diversify a portfolio, but it's a bad idea for an entire economy.

      Seems legit on its face but doesnt pass the sniff test. We are currently seeing the fruits of the system you describe and its a loss of 99% of the dollars value, that doesnt sound like "stable" purchasing power. It sounds like incremental theft from a wealthy country by a privately held central bank.

    • @AnonomusKity
      @AnonomusKity 4 роки тому +1

      Such eye-opening insights that you elaborated on!!!! Hard to argue these points you made...but I want to disagree that the precious metals will lose their purchasing power or be devalued if the miners find a new large deposit or use a new efficient mining or refining process, because the amount of people dying on this earth is heavily outweighed by people being born; and if a majority of the people of every nation were to be educated and made aware of the importance of precious metals as money, demand will skyrocket, the finite supply on this earth cannot satisfy 9 billion people, so value of metals would go up. Just because the value of it goes up, it doesn't mean people will necessarily hoard it all; we still need to purchase the necessities of life; high valued metals can just purchase more goods and services, which would encourage spending to stimulate the economy. If there were a surplus in precious metal money, then I would say to use that to pay back debt obligations, as some humans have a mental disorder to detrimentally spend more than they can pay back. Also. Legislators can always pass laws to limit the amount of mining done if the world's economies needed to restrict the money supply, because mining is environmentally destructive.

    • @AndrewHosford
      @AndrewHosford 4 роки тому +1

      @@jorgevespucci9878 Yes, the dollar gets devalued a little bit more each year. That's inflation. But, in a healthy economy, you should also make a few percent more each year, and if workers are more and more productive each year, and the economy grows faster than the population is growing, you should have a little more utility each year. That's why MOST Americans are far wealthier than their great grand parents, even though we work fewer hours.
      But in normal times (not during a pandemic) your dollar yesterday could buy you pretty much the exact same amount of stuff as it can today because the primary job of the central bank is to create an environment of about 2-2.5% inflation. The job of precious metal miners is to make as much profit as possible, and you can't control an economy if you can't control the money supply. And in a capitalist market, you can't (shouldn't) control how a private business, such as a mining company operates. Which means the government can not control the money supply, which leads to things like the great depression, which happened back when we were on the gold standard and couldn't stimulate the economy by printing money.
      And yes, if we use this super power (printing money) too often during times of crisis, without working down that debt during healthy economic cycles (like we just had for the last 10 years) eventually, we will run out of runway, and the whole thing will collapse. We really should not have been running a budget deficit for the past 10 years, and we shouldn't run one again after this crisis is over.

      @@AnonomusKity Very true that the government could enforce some sort of restriction on the amount of gold/silver/plantimum/etc allowed to be produced or imported into the country, etc. But that doesn't address the other side of the coin (pun intended) if production of precious metals can't keep up with growth in the rest of the economy. This is one of the big reasons cryptocurrencies haven't really taken off as a form of payment for goods/services, because they are so volatile that people view them as an investment, rather than a currency, so people trade and hold them, instead of spending them, aside from some illicit items that you don't want the police finding out about, lol. And I do see physical precious metals as an important part of a portfolio, mainly for the SHTF scenarios, and the preservation of wealth during a major geopolitical event, like the collapse of a government. But as a form of money, they tend to have a lot of drawbacks that can be alleviated through a properly controlled fiat currency. Of course the debate over whether or not governments can be trusted to properly control said currency is certainly debatable. I'm mainly speaking from a theoretical point. In practice, we've all seen what happened to the Weimar Republic and Zimbabwe, and more recently Valenzuela. So you REALLY need to make sure your government actually has the best interest of the people in mind, and has competent, knowledgeable leaders in charge of a nation's currency, who understand consumer psychology, game theory, and classical economics.
