I would recomend to put the moss pole all the way to the bottom of the pot for better stability. You can fill this lower portion of pole with soil mix instead of moss during potting proces:)
I normally do places right at the bottom but this one I decided not to lol. I used to fill the bottom with soil but I just got lazy and I honestly happened to notice the difference
Chuckle chuckle...love that gentle plug to Thiccly...hope they sponsor you Jeff! I totally agree that Philos (and Monstera) have such thick aerial roots that need moisture to anchor down so moss poles are the best for that. You'll have to give us an update in a few weeks/months to see the growth change 💪
I fill the bottom of the pole with soil, I don’t put moss down into the pot. But you’re doing what works for you and it’s obvious by looking at your plants they are very happy. Thanks for another video. ♥️🪴♥️
Great honest video on the plant's adjustment to a wood plank. Regarding your soil choice, would you consider doing a video on it? Ingredients, appropriate for potted/moss poles plants.
Darn! It's not long ago I planted my own Majectic with a wood plank. I got a single node in july and she grew three decent sized leaves during the rest of the summer. I had her in perlite with a reservoir and would have gladly kept the setup like that over the winter for easy upkeep if she wasn't getting so top heavy. I wanted her supported in an early stage. Not gonna lie, I was inspired by your example a while back. Moss poles just fit my apartment and overall conditions poorly. My monstera started grasping a short juniper pole now by wrapping a new arial root around it and growing tiny roots along the main aerial root into the dense wood's surface. I didn't expect that to happen at all, the pole was just a prettier choice for a decent sturdy support pole. So I was super exited to notice this and hoped it would be a sign this should work with my majestic as well. Now I don't know if I should give up with that already. It's going to be one hell of a hassle to get my hands on any moss pole materials in the first place. There's no way I'm going to be able to take proper care of a moss pole. I wonder if the "dry" coco fiber "moss poles" would be just as useless as the plank in this case🤔 But I don't have those stackable ones available around either. This is going to give me a headache...😅
I wouldn't stress out too much about it.... I think it'll be tough to keep that coco fiber damp enough to entice the roots to grow into... You can definitely keep trying with the plank. I have someone message saying they're philodendron latched on to a plank so you never know
@@EverythingPlants thanks for the response! I've been trying* to wrap the nodes with saran wrap and tape instead of just tying the plant on, so I'm still hopefull that will have an effect on things. Maybe I'll wait out a little longer. We'll see!
I don't know how much you're Grow vertical poles cost but I buy a pack of 5 or 10 sheets of 1mm or 3mm clear vinyl plastic and a roll of vinyl-coated chicken wire. I make my poles rounded back with a flat, 4in to 5in wide, piece of chicken wire on the front so that it's flat on the front and it's rounded in the back. I don't think I spent more than $30 or $40 on materials and so far I've got at least 10 moss poles from it and I still have 2.5 sheets left and at least half the role of vinyl-coated chicken wire. The wire I have the holes probably aren't any wider than what my thumb is, maybe a bit smaller than my thumb, so maybe no wider than what the tip of my middle finger would be. It's so much cheaper and much sturdier than all plastic poles. If those work fine for you, that's great, stick with them. I just wanted to let you know that you can also make your own in that same shape with a fully covered back, for not that much money.
@EverythingPlants I ordered everything from Amazon. You do need zip ties to hold the two pieces together. When I get back home I'll send you the picture.
Hi Jeff. Another informative video. I noticed the moss goes all the way to bottom of pole. Is that your routine? I have a hard time getting soil to stay in the bottom while potting. Moss to bottom would be easier, but I thought it might be too wet in the soil. Your thoughts on this appreciated!
Ya....I tried placing soil in the bottom as well and I just can't be bothered haha. I'm at the point as it just better survive and so far no issues. I know others will disagree but oh well lol
Hey Jeff! What about Syngoniums? What is your experience with them? Will they attach to a plank? I have several that I want to put on either a plank or pole. I do have a few pieces of reclaimed barn wood thay I want to use. It is a rough surface, not like a smooth plank. Do you think they will climb on that? About 30+ years ago I had a gorgeous Whit Butterfly that was bought on a slice of wood with rough bark still attached, I have searched high and low and I don't think they are available anymore, sadly.
I had a syngonium frosted heart latch on to a plank.... It all depends on how you want to care for it. A moss pole would probably be better but requires more care and maintenance
Great clip, as always! Thanks! You’ll be surprised to hear that my large philodendron rojo congo has attached to a wood stake! Very securely! But that’s the only one! I’m going to try some of these moss poles. They look nice (not taking over) and seem user friendly 😊. Thanks! 🤗
@@EverythingPlants Two things: I’m in Budapest, Hungary, at the moment, returning home to New Jersey on Sunday, and I don’t have IG ( that’s instagram, I take it). But I’m pretty sure my daughter does, so I’ll send her the picture and ask her to send it on to you. One day next week.
I ordered some and am attempting a repot. I was using a "moss pole" but one that's really coir without success for an adansonii. However I'm struggling with potting. Can the vines be wrapped around the d-shaped pole (360°) or is this more of a straight shot climb up the middle/front?
Try misting everyday, not to much, just enough to keep it moist to replicate a light morning dew or a light rainforest morning mist. I've got a video on my channel on my monstera adansonii growing up and attaching to a piece of driftwood.
I love the way plants grow on moss poles but can’t for the life of me figure out how to keep the moss poles wet without overwatering the bottom pot. And I do use chunky mixes with tons of drainage holes 😩. What’s y’all’s secret?
Ive only got one moss pole and it's not very large, like an inch across, I listened to Jan from Sydney Plant Guy and only water the pole. I use a bottle of water with alot 5 holes poked in the lid, fill it about halfway with water and fertilizer and plop it in the top. It takes a few hours to work through the moss and any extra goes into the soil. I use a moisture meter to make sure my plant doesn't also need watered, so far so good! I did a big chop so my plant is smaller now so I'm watering less often. Sydney plant guy also uses soil instead of hydro so his advice worked great for me.
I'm down to 2 moss poles since I'm having the same issue. Bare planks & PVC poles wrapped with coco liner seem to be working the best for me. No fungus gnats or overwatering either. I buy coco liner by the sheet, cut, wrap around a PVC pole & secure with fishing line. A little hot melt glue helps keep it in place on the pole while I wrap it with the line. I've tried Sydney Plant Guys methods, but it just doesn't work for me 😥
I have found that cheap moss won't absorb the water as effectively so it will seep through sog things. You could go with semi hydro and then it's not a problem if it drips into the pot.
@@tim_meister yeah you need good moss and you need to compact it or water will just flow out. I order my moss from a Gecko breeder as I feel it's going to be the most organic for reptiles and therefore my plants. It's also less expensive than on Amazon for the same brand, likely bc it's being sold as a pet product rather than a plant product.
The gooseneck lights in the back.... They are Sansi lights and my US and Canada Amazon links are in the description of this video. It has the lights that I use in the video on that page

Totally! Having moss in the soil will increase chances of root rot due to excessive moister from moss. Sydney Plant Guy (Jan) has it down pat!
I normally do places right at the bottom but this one I decided not to lol. I used to fill the bottom with soil but I just got lazy and I honestly happened to notice the difference
I have been starting to put my plants on moss poles, and was about to put my plants on a wood plank. Good timing. Thanks for the video, Jeff!
Thanks for watching and good luck with your larger leaves
I just started using the D-shaped moss poles. They are working great. Thanks for another great video.

I may have to reconsider all my planks as well lol
Nice repot! I also agree on the D-shaped moss poles.
They work well!
So glad that I saw your video before potting my Vercosum on a diy pole.
Love the clean look of those clear poles!👏
Those DIY poles dry out way too quickly for my environment. Thanks for watching

I've done both ways and I really haven't noticed any difference in the plants
That’s good to know; thanks for sharing info Jeff!

What kind of wood are you using for the planks? Some lumbar treatments are pretty detrimental to root growth
I have pine and cedar

Where can I get those plastic moss poles? Looking on your links and I cant find it. Thank you.
I just added them to my US and Canada Amazon links in the description of this video. They are called Thiccly moss poles
I done use the regular moss poles I get too many fungus gnats in them. I think my husband over waters it
It's a delicate balance that's for sure
Does monstera deliciosa need a moss pole if I just want average sized leaves?
I find that they like a support, but don't need a moss pole. Any stake, pole, or plank will do. Their leaves will gradually size up on their own.

They are meant to just climb the front but I have seen some other people kind of weave it down and then back up almost like in an S shape pattern
Hey Jeff, where do you buy your plants online?
I have bought and recommend North Shore Tropicals (Vancouver) and Parkfolia (Edmonton)
@@EverythingPlants thank you Jeff 🥰
I do not see the plastic you use for a moss pole on your USA Amazon page. Could you link it here?
Here it is....its under plant accessories
