Hey there! Great work. I have a question. Why u recommend adapter for motovloging? I have Rode Smartluv+ and im a motovlogger. Can u help me what should I do? I have apple usb-c to 3.5mm it works but audio is distorted. If i buy Boya BY-K4 do u think distortion go away?
The DJI Audio adapter was designed specifically w moto in mind as it seems to have a built in attenuator which lowers the incoming audio signal to the camera. This helps reduce distortion if you have your lav mic in your helmet close to your mouth. The BY-K4 provides a hotter signal and is generally better if you have a mic that's placed farther away from your mouth. In a moto situation, even with all the gain settings at their lowest, the BOYA may be too sensitive and still distort. Before you use either of these, if you have a RODE Smart lav+, you will need another adapter like a RODE SC3 as your mic is a TRRS connector and the adapters are TRS. The SC3 is a TRRS female to TRS male adapter.
I use this setup for my insta360 x3 with mic adapter. I know and I have another adapter Comica RTTS to RTS. So then I just need DJI mic adapter like my insta360 X3. It's boomer actually; I was happy to use less cable or adapter.. 😔@@WayneRECs
Thanks for the new video on this adapter. My question, is the audio the same using this adapter vs the Boya? Is the audio more or less sensitive at the same gain setting? Thank you.
Thanks for the update Wayne! I bought the Action 4 a couple of months ago to replace my GoPros partly due to your reviews. I’m loving it so far and I did try using a couple of lav mics for audio recording while motovlogging but one thing I was concerned about is how exposed to weather the usb Port is once you remove the hatch. It’s great that this adapter seems to protect it better. Interested to see further updates from you.
I never had the Action 1 but I do have a few other Cynova adapters for other cameras that were ok. Hopefully this adapter solves the frustration a lot of users have experienced with the Action 3.

Hello Malaysia from Dubai. I have the same issue as this with Motovlogging. It’s a bug within the firmware that maybe DJI will solve later on. For now, what I do is press quick capture and wait for 5 seconds before talking. It’s not long quick capture if you need to Spk but at least you’ll capture a shot quickly then start talking after. I would have loved this new adaptor to have a backward facing trs jack socket so all my wires can be tidy from my helmet chin mount
This happens with my gopro as well. Might be an issue with quick capture cos the camera needs maybe few seconds to get everything in order. Just don't speak for the 1st few seconds. That's what I do.
Hi, does it still have cold start issue with the audio adaptor too ? Any one else have used the adaptor and tested it directly with the quick capture ?
You mentioned "cold start", is it the same issue I had randomly when using the DJI Mic with the OA3 vis IUSB-C? I missed a few recordings because of that issue and was wondering if it was the Mic or the camera
Awesome! All I wanted was a way to plug my tiny plug-y trs microphone directly into the camera without the need to attach it to the camera (it weighs so little). i have one of these on my old original Osmo action, it used to work just fine. It no longer works like it used to. I have two adapters and multiple mics the camera no longer sees the mic. any idea what I might check.
I would say it's water resistant, like light rain would be fine. Normally you wouldn't want to go snorkeling or something like that with an external mic anyways.
Hey mate, im wondering to use boya adapter usb c to male trs then plugin straight to my dji wireless mic 1 transmiter (inside helmet) for motovlog, u reckon this gonna work? Im on tight budget
Is it water resistant? I cant find where it says anything about it on their site. It says for "motoracing", but I would think that while "motoracing" it could start raining.
It's hard to say. It seats into the camera pretty securely but there are no gaskets around the connection. But the weak point could be where the mic or USB-C charging connects.
@@WayneRECs Hopefully they turn on the ability to use the DJI Mic 2 to wirelessly connect to the Action 4 via Bluetooth. I can connect it to my iPhone 15 Pro Max as an audio device using the Black Magic app, and it can be used on my Pocket 3 obviously, and seeing as how the A4 has the same BT capability, one would think they could update the A4 to use the Mic 2.
I have the similarly designed SYNOVA audio adapter for Action 1 and we survived countless tropical thunderstorms together (as dashcam/motovlogging cam). Obviously with exposed USBC and 3.5mm ports you no longer will get a water resistant IP rating but I guess you should be fine with rainy weather , just don't soak it underwater.

They may not have liked the comment in a previous video you did about how pricey adapter is. I received mine today from B&H Photo and lay me tell you, nearly $50 is bananas for this device. DJI probable produced this thing for $8 per unit.
Hi Wayne! Thanks for this video. I got the Boya BY K4 adapter and while that cold start bug is gone, it still takes several seconds (around 10) before the mic is recognized if the camera has been off for 1-2 hours. Is this normal? Also, if it is normal behaviour with the Boya adapter then does using this adapter negate this problem? Thanks in advance for testing this out. Please note that this only happens once the camera has been in off state for couple hours with the adapter always connected. (Think motovlogging scenario)
Can you power the Action 3 with external power bank through the adaptor while having the internal battery removed? Will the adaptor allow simultaneous audio and external power on the Action 3? Will the adaptor fit the Acton 3 while using the Smallrig cage?
Yes, the adapter does allow powering the Action 4 without a battery. With regards to the mic being recognized on startup, for me, a TRS mic has to be connected for the adapter to be recognized (as opposed to other adapters that are recognized without a connected mic) and the camera still has a lag when starting cold before it begins recording with the mic. But I've never had the adapter not be recognized. The startup lag seems to be just how the camera functions (unfortunately) but hopefully DJI can push through a firmware update that speeds up the process.
@WayneRECs does the new adapter exhibit the cold start bug? I was messing around with usb splitters and mic adapters with usb c pass-through and those do seem to have the cold start issue even with latest firmware.
Thanks for this. I look forwards for your tests. I also wonder if this device could work for the Pocket 3. The dilemma with these cameras is to be able to charge and use a 3.5 mic at the same time. I subbed!
Thanks for the sub! I don't think this specific adapter will fit the Pocket 3 as the attachment points wouldn't allow the USB-C plug to sit flush in a Pocket 3 but hopefully DJI makes something similar for the Pocket 3.
Thanks bro. But what about connecting a wireless microphone which only supports USB C receiver? Will this adapter recognize any kind of wireless Microphone which only has USB C receiver?
No, the DJI Audio Adapters USB-C port only supports charging. BUT, you should be able to plug your USB-C Receiver directly into the Action 4 and it should be recognized by the camera as an audio input. The downside is no simultaneous charging when using a USB-C Receiver.
@@WayneRECs I was about to use Dji Action 4 cage to protect the camera. When I use a cage, I can't use any receiver because there is no space. That's why I was looking for an adapter to connect a receiver, so I can use cage and the receiver. Any suggestion bro? 🙂
If your receiver can be mounted in a cold shoe, you could run a short USB-C extension cable from it to your camera: amzn.to/3WzfVtc Or if your use case allows, you could try an angled USB-C or something similar depending on your receiver's weight and configuration: amzn.to/4brDZCd
Hi, I have just bought this adapter (and DJI mic), for my Osmo Action 3. It actually works, and I connected the usb c, and it does charge. Hi Wayne, it’s a shame that big companies only want to collaborate with big UA-camrs. I have had similar 🙄. I am a motorcycle vlogger. I was using the Saramonic adapter, and Hama mic in my helmet, but had to use an inline volume control in between the two, to avoid distortion. This system has worked very well so far, but the amount of wires looks untidy when the camera on the handlebars is pointing at me. So, I bit the bullet, and bought the adapter, and DJI’s own lav mic. In a static test (the weather is too wet to go out at the moment), wearing the helmet inside my house, the audio sounds excellent. I even sat in front of my tv, with one of my videos playing, so that I could see how much external audio could be heard over my voice. When the rain eventually stops, I will be out testing this set up, and will post on my UA-cam channel. It looks so much neater than having all those dangling wires. The other bonus is, that by connecting a battery bank via the usb, it charges the camera at the same time as recording the audio. Love your DJI based vids, as I find them really helpful. Cheers Ian (UK)
Definitely a great video for me as someone who is interested in switching from GoPro to Dji. I would say that this adapter seems a lot less friendly than the media mod since the media mod literally just feels like putting the gopro in a cage. My one issue with the media mod however is that when you put the media mod on a chest mount the camera slightly faces more downwards, so maybe this adapter and a dji osmo action 4 might be better for me. hmm..
if use dji adapter with 3.5mm trs lav mic, no have cold start bug issue? Im using trs to usbc(3rd party) converter however in my settings have cold start bug.
Hallo Wayne! Thank you for this clip, interesting. It would be interesting to try DJI Action 4 with the DJI Mic, or even the DJI Mic Receiver as "Mic adapter"
??? dowsnt the osmo just accept usb mics without this? a simple trs to usb mic adapter for 5 bucks works doesnt it? audio processing is done in camera... confused on its need
Yes but that will dangle around and usually have excess cables. Not the end of the world but it's an action cam. I will plug a tiny omni directional microphone into the 3.5 and be done with it, no need to attach. Also I would assume the official adapter provides some weather protection whereas the others don't.
@@scottwaddell298 Maybe it'll do wonders to your understanding of the world if you took the time to read what people have written. The camera is not on during MOTOVLOGGING. But if I'm riding 12 hours, I would be using the camera's quick record feature where it turns off immediately after it stops recording. When using it like this, if its OFF for a few hours because I didn't record, it'll stop recognizing the USB Mic altogether until you take a stop and do a series of steps to make it recognize the mic again. I wrote to DJI about this and they've acknowledged that they've no solution except for to use specific adapters to avoid this.

Thanks for the vid. Personally I think they really went backwards with this adapter compared to Cynovas OG mic adapter. But then again their in the camera business and not accessories
I never owned an Action 1, so I can't really comment on how that Cynova adapter was, but I think with this particular adapter, DJI seemed to prioritize certain features (like the super secure attachment design) to accommodate the needs of motorcycle riders where just the USB-C plug isn't quite enough to reliably stay connected. I haven't been able to extensively test it yet, but as DJI labels this adapter for moto activities, it could be potentially fine tuned to meet those specific gain needs.
It was was awesome it just worked and it was super low profile. Also Companies like SmallRig built their cages with the adapter in mind. It still to this day my favorite little action cam despite the now dated features but to be honest always say The Action one to me is like an old Fujifilm camera yea it’s not the best quality but it has a certain look in quality that I just like. I hope they don’t stop with this adapter and keep at it since I would love an actual adapter for now I just use a 90degree mini USBC dongle to hook up to my Rode Wireless Go
Big déception with OA4, i use it on the windshield of my car to film the road, i use horizon balanced mode but at any turn on the road, the horizon does not stay flat, this work only in straight line,. very very deceptive Indeed, if i knew this "little" detail i would not have bought that action cam, i checked the hero 11, it does keep the horizon balanced even in the curves on the road. Thanks for the great work you do on this channel 😉

Biggest problem is if you use USB mic directly it stops recognizing them after few hours of inactivity like in a motovlogging scenario.
a few hours... what do you do.. pee into a bag... just kidding... but for most they dont have the cam on FOR 2 HOURS@@pushpdeeppandey
Where to buy? Im from indonesia
bhinneka gunung sahari store, try googling dji osmo action 3.5mm audio adapter action 4 bhinneka
Hello, i have heavy clipping in my audio, starts normal, but than, aber 3-8 sec, audio is quit, but can hear, after than go to clipping audio, never stops, never better.
I have the Action 1 and 3.
I only use lav mic with it
I use the Boya By-M3-OA, I have several of them (cameras and mic's)
No adapter needed
I use them on my helmets as well
Never any issue
USB directly into the DJI and no issues in or out of the cages
Should work with 4
Thanks for sharing! What style helmet do you wear and where do you place your mic?
Bike with camera on the Top of the helmet and extra wire wound in the vent channels of the foam and down to the chin strap for the mic
Scooter helmet camera on the chin area
Mic inside
The extra wire is harder to hide but doable depending on the helmet
Velcro is your buddy
Both with windscreen@@WayneRECs
I hope they don’t stop with this adapter and keep at it since I would love an actual adapter for now I just use a 90degree mini USBC dongle to hook up to my Rode Wireless Go
Good
Darn. DHL was faster for you :) Mine should arrive Monday.
Lol, I ordered it a week ago and it took 6 days to arrive! They should've sent it via raven...lol
@@WayneRECs i'm in Europe. It only got stocked 2 days ago. Meant to be delivered today, but got stuck in customs. And the weekend isn't helping me.
No link for us to buy? I'd love to have one.
I just wish my audio on my action 4 worked.
£45 GBP (about $55) in the UK :L
Pins and Needles!
DJI made the adapter that’s very similar non compatible. I feel they are going to make other things they do not make incompatible
ua-cam.com/video/2VYvo1pAAT0/v-deo.html - I am facing Similar Issue. Did you test it further. this Adaptor is still not available in India.
Come on @dji Wayne is the only reason I haven’t switched to GoPro.
Ha, thanks for the vote of confidence!
Adapter mic
Too bulky, Saramonic SR-C2003 Mic adapter Works great and look better
Big déception with OA4, i use it on the windshield of my car to film the road, i use horizon balanced mode but at any turn on the road, the horizon does not stay flat, this work only in straight line,. very very deceptive Indeed, if i knew this "little" detail i would not have bought that action cam, i checked the hero 11, it does keep the horizon balanced even in the curves on the road.
Thanks for the great work you do on this channel 😉
is it still water proof?
