Well, I'm a Motovlogger and have been following your channel for some time. I also tried 10s of config and the best I found was the DJI Mic + Sony ECM-LV1 lavalier. Then recently I tried the RODE Wireless Me and it beats the DJI due to its 32-bit float, even though I'd prefer to keep my DJI Mic for its compactness and practicality.
I have a serious question i.e. should I use DJI Mic adapter with Sony ECM-LV1 lavalier Mic, or should I go for Samsung AKG C type earphone for MOTOVLOGGING ?
Just installed a Lavalier Go into my helmet, running it into an Action 4 w/ the DJI Adapter. Looking forward to tweaking the settings and finding that wonderful clear balanced recording. Much appreciated!
Also, I've had the D4 Duo for years and completely forgot it can use a second mic instead of the rear capsule! Cool idea. I think that would work using a longer audio cable and then chucking the D4 Duo in a backpack, however you would get a cable running out from your chin to your back. Certainly a way to make that work. If I ever test this on a bike I'll make sure to tag you.
i really love the adapter. i had the orig with cynova as my dashcam mic'd straight to the muffler of my car. this was a very good replacement with the action 4's lowlight capability
As a new moto vlogger, I really appreciate your content! I’m on the Osmo 1 and basically can’t record into the camera as it’s way too sensitive with no adjustments. I don’t want to use a rode/dji wireless setup as I’m doing more long form adventure vlogs and don’t have time for the hassle. Hoping to get the osmo 4 and just plug straight into the camera with reduced gain. Thanks for the insight!
Good video. I have a bit differing opinions on this. Im gonna try and make a video about this too as I have more than a year of trial and error with motovlogging and sound. I do 2 channels too to get bike sounds incorporated in the video.
thank you for doing this type of videos, though I let go of my action 3 already and took the action 4,,, I haven't experienced any clipping using adapters on action 4 but I just encountered some disconnect not sure if because of the wind, waiting for availability here in the Phlippines I will give motovloggers more confidence the the audio will not mess up since its a snug fit to the camera.
Forget Rode! A better option is to use a iPhone old head seat that has 3.5mic jack. The one from Iphone 5, for example. Cut the headphones and just use the mic. Way better mic then anything on the market. Bear in mind that with the iPhone headseat you need a TRRS to TRS converter cable. Rode SC3 for example.
Thank you for figuring these things out for us! Still hoping that one of the DJI Action cameras will eventually work with the DJI Mic 2, but barring that, this is a great albeit relatively expensive solution compared to going with no-brand stuff that works fine with GoPros. Just how it is when using the otherwise solid Action 3.
Het Wayne, thank you for the precious information you're sharing with us. Can you have a chance to try this setup with RODE Lavalier 2 mic ? That'd be fabulous !
Thanks for that, this is the exact issue ive been having with the Action 3, was actually about to push the buy now button on another camera. Do you notice any difference between the Action 3 and 4 using this adaptor? I had a chat to DJI and they said that its not optimised for the 3 so it might not work to its full potential. Any other adaptor on the 3 just processes way too much wind noise under the helmet and makes it unusable.
I haven't noticed any major differences. There may be some at the far end of the cameras' gain levels (as they are different between the 3 & 4) but it seems to perform similarly in both cameras.
@WayneRECs Thats the info im trying to get out of DJI hahah, I know the 4 is better at the higher end especially for wind noise. Just hoping this adapter helped on the 3.
I think mic placement depends a lot on each person's personal preference with their camera setups on their bikes. If you only run a single camera mounted to the chin of your helmet, you'll need to devise a place to mount a 2nd mic (which would entail additional cabling). If your camera is mounted on your bike, that would entail a different kind of mic placement. Alternatively, you could run 2 lavs in your helmet (one inside for your voice and the other more exposed outside of the helmet) instead of using something like the D4 Duo.
Hey! Thank you for helping me. I've watched all of your videos covering the mic adapter. I recently switched from Gopro to DJI. Went out on my first ride of the year and all of my audio was blown out. It was really bad and a waste of 5 hours lol. I'm sure my subs will appreciate you helping me out🙂
Well of course it’s not going to be 100% hunky dory right out of the box dude, just like any camera and audio equipment it’s going to take some setting up to get the audio and video settings down right.
Also not a motorcycle rider but I sure enjoyed this video. Who knows- I might encounter a similar situation with my Osmo Action 4 and I'll know how to dual up some mics. Thanks for sharing this.
I love these conceptual videos. This is giving me ideas on how to improve my outdoor work. I would recommend the Sennheiser MKE200 over the Deity for it's blimp style design and included deadcat. On an unrelated note, does the new DJI Audio adapter work on the Action 3?
Hey Wayne, I am enjoying your videos as I just ordered the Action 3. I am doing off road vlogging. Sometimes in town, other times trails in the mountains, other times sitting in my recliner (LOL!). What would you suggest as far as a good mid-price point wireless mic? My Jeep is lifted and inside it will echo a bit from the fiberglass hardtop and leather seats. Just trying to make my content better, more enjoyable to create, and for others to watch. Tired of holding an iPhone while trail riding or even sitting in the recliner. Thank you Sir!
a quick question..... the new DJI audio adapter combined with deity 4 dual works with the front and back capsules splitted in two channels? is istill required to use the boya usb-c adapter to make this deity dual works or the new audio adapter is compatible with the 2 capsules spplitting them in two channels?
Hello Wayne!!! This is awesome! I bought the adapter the other day on your recommendation and tested it for the first time yesterday. Really promising results, my only issue was wind noise but I’m sure if play around with position that issue will be sorted. The perfect scenario for a motovlogger (in my opinion) is to have I EVERYTHING remain inside the helmet. With the two mics you suggested, that would be a bit difficult. Have you got any recs for mics that can be hidden inside the helmet (maybe at the back of the head?) which could be used to record the bike sounds? We’re so close to the perfect set up here this is really exciting!!!
maybe next time you can buy real helmet and put the mic under the chick pad, and when test point fan or hair dryer also can at the helmet to replicate wind sound
Still gonna stick with my BOYA BY-M3-OA I have several I use on Action 1,3,and 4 All on helmets No adapters needed Just have to be creative with putting away all the extra length of wire, but so far no issue All work for me
Where would that (apparently) big mic go to get the engine sound while remaining protected from the wind and other sound sources? Also, all those wires can become a problem. Would you be willing to do a similar video with wireless options like the DJI Mic or the Rode Wireless Pro?
Spectacular what you and the Action 4 and the adapter did in your beautiful, thrilling action video❗I left this ? at your site: You said you filmed in 60 FPS U-Wide RS+, what FPS did you render out in post to make that YT video? Thanks.
Thanks for your comments. Using Filmora software I render and upload the videos in the same settings of 4K 60FPS. I also had the camera audio set to stereo instead of mono. I don't know if that helps since I was using a cheap 7 dollar goose neck mic but I was really happy with the sound quality considering it's a motocross helmet and not a street bike helmet with a closed face shield.
Can we run the same setup using the Boya BY-K4? I'm planning to buy the BY-K4, and then connect it with my HOSA stereo breakout cable. But since you only recommend the dji mic adapter for splitting the mic inputs, it makes me wonder if the BY-K4 will also do the job.
The BY-K4 will work also, though that adapter seems to apply more gain to your mic as opposed to the DJI Mic Adapter which seems to attenuate the mic signal. So, if you're using it for moto activities and experience clipped audio, the DJI adapter helps in that regard.
@@WayneRECs thanks for the answer. The DJI mic adapter is not available in my country, so I'll go with the BY-K4 and hope the gain setting from the camera can be useful to prevent clipping.

I know you don´t usually answer questions, but this is just a yes or not answer. Would it work the same if using the splitter we connect two lav mics one for rider and one for passenger so both conversations can be record at the same time? Thank you
I think it depends on if the splitter cable can pass adequate plug-in power to both lavs. If not, potentially only 1 of the lavs would work. If your lavs have their own batteries, then a splitter should be able to send one L & the other R.
