Modding the Razer Huntsman Mini: Easy steps for better sound!

- Опубліковано 24 лип 2020
- I recently got the new Razer Huntsman Mini with purple clicky optical switches. I really enjoy the 60% form factor, but noticed that the keys were pinging (or reverbing) when they were depressed. It's fairly subtle and most won't notice it, but having used many other keyboards without this issue, I set forth on an afternoon-long journey to mod the Huntsman Mini and remove this annoying sound.
The whole process is pretty easy with directions, but still time consuming. The materials required are just basic tools, some $6 spray lube, and roughly $10 of sound dampening foam. There will also be plenty left over so you can use them for future projects. Be sure to have a few hours free to finish the whole process.

For those of you looking to do this to a Huntsman TE, please watch my before/after sound comparison video here: ua-cam.com/video/NvJ1mh2XkfI/v-deo.html
The procedure for the TE is almost exactly the same, but there's an extra hidden screw in the back (watch my video to for how to get to it).
Also, if you don't want to push the switches out by force, you can squeeze the two clips on the side of each switch together (from underneath the PCB) a little and then they slide right out.
ha, man, can you make a video of how to lube the switches exactly because when you do it in this video it was blocked by your hand please thank (bought this keyboard because of you).
Hey, you can see the process in more detail in randomprankp's video on the same topic: ua-cam.com/video/r_OePPDTFVU/v-deo.html
for the ribbon cable you are supposed to lift up the little black tab and then it will just be completely loose, thats what is actually keeping the cable in place
What jf you lube the switches
Holy shit that sounds so much better
Andrew: "Now i'm gonna _lube the keycaps_ "
Me: keycaps? 👁👄👁
Hahaha, did I really say that??? Well, hopefully you got what I meant, lol.
@@bigxie I broke the little bottom part of the spacebar. Is there any place I can go to to get a new spacebar?
@@flockedat are you talking about the stabilizer clips on each end of the spacebar? Razer sells replacement PBT keycap sets that would work (and they come with new stabilizers), but if you just broke the keycap itself, any standard keycap set fits on the Huntsman Mini since it has a standard bottom row.
@@bigxie I actually fixed it in a different way. I took the same stabilizers from the delete key, took one of them and replaced the broken one with the backspace. Basically what I’m saying is that I removed the broken stabilizer and added another one from the backspace key for completely free. It worked like magic and it feels much better. Thank you very much for the info.
@@flockedat I'm glad that worked for you, but it's not "free". Your backspace key is now missing a stabilizer and will rattle if you hit it off center. Whether it's noticeable or bothers you is completely subjective though!

Lmao 😂 no difference
nah theres a difference
@@ChanniePenghua it's marginally quieter and I suppose lets you hear the per key rattle a bit better
@@11202 it's about performance not about some sounds
Didn’t notice much difference from stock to foam but with the lube it sounded crazy good
You couldn't even hear any pinging in the video but in real life you can
UA-cam cuts off every sound beyond 15khz, so it is mostly filtered out. I am typing this on a razor huntsmen elite and the metallic ping is very loud. Will send it back.
@@TanteEmmaaa they do!?! i mean i knew they compressed, but i didn't know that. makes me wish he uploaded a sound file on the side.
@Jao Bai Dun Razor basically integrated a tuning fork in their optical switches, so no wonder about the noise. I didn't try the lube, for 200€, a keyboard has to be good out of the box.
@Layarion I think with the new codecs youtube doesn't cut of the high frequencies anymore. But there are a lot of old examples still on youtube.
Thank you for having a video with the clickies. I have purples too and can only find other videos with red switches. Will definitely be doing this!
Great job. I wasn't expecting it to sound as good as it did at the end.
Deam, bruh. Nice job. I've seen this mod being done for the linear version of these switches again on a huntsman mini, but I gotta say I never thought the clicky ones could sound this good. It's night and day between the stock sound and the one after these mods. Thinking about buying one for myself and trying these mods as well.
Thank you so much dude I love everything about the keyboard but that annoying ping! And the lube and foam are super cheap! I really appreciate you making this vid
Glad I could help!
Wow....I wasn't expecting that much of a difference, good job
night and day sound. thanks for the video. just ordered the parts.
Omg so helpful! I have the huntsman mini linear! Switch and click helped me taking the key caps off BuT wow this helped me with everything else. Ur a good tutorial Gide!
After about 6-7 custom keyboard builds I returned to where I originally started, I bought a razer blackwidow chroma way back when I got into PC gaming had it for about 4 years and in 2020 I took into customs built a GMMK Pro which was my most expensive build then did a few different 60% and 4 different TKLS I finally gave up on the hobby and picked up a Razer Huntsman Elite V2 Analog, would love to look at some of these mods, since the switches on it are adjustable it is super nice for typing and gaming and I always preferred heavier linear switches and I while I cant really find anything for the actuation force on these I would have to say that these are in the 60-70g range and I love it a lot, I really want to improve the stabilizers but arent really familiar with these types of stabs, this video is the beginning of my mods on this keyboard thank you!
I did this mod the same way you did it and it sounds so much better than it was in it's stock form! Seriously, it feels buttery smooth!
Glad it worked out for you and that you're enjoying the results!
Thx I decided to do this after watching ur vid it worked out great!
I finished doing this just now and the results are amazing! Thank you so much for the tutorial. All in all it cost me about $5-$6. All I had to do was go out and buy the lubricant at Walmart. I used a mat that I use for changing my car's oil as the dampener. 3 layers of the soft paper like fabric.
The spacebar is still not where I wish it would be but a lot better than before.
Thank you!
NP, glad to hear it went well for you! Tuning space bars is always a challenge, even on some higher end custom boards. There are some "spacebar foams" that you can try, which can reduce the hollow or echo-y sound of the spacebar. If it's rattling noise that's bothering you, then maybe some dielectric grease on the stabilizer bars can soften that up.
@@Sc0l4p4st4 It hasn't deteriorated in my experience, but admittedly I also stopped using the Huntsman Mini that frequently after moving on to more custom boards.
@@L3IZ3R does it still feel and sound the same?
@@L3IZ3R thanks for letting me know! i have been thinking about just going traditional lube anyway.
Bruh... thank you so much for this. I ended up using a $10 anti fatigue door mat from Wal-Mart (6mm thick) and cut to fit the case. $15 project and got it all done in a day, and the keyboard feels like a whole new animal. And the sound, omg the sound. Its perfect and muted and no more ping/excess clank.
Glad it worked out well for you! I think that a little sound treatment can really make a big difference and we are already seeing a lot of hot swap prebuilts around $100 including some case foam, so hopefully Razer takes a cue and in future generations of the Huntsman, focus more on reducing the ping and improving the sound profile overall.
Just nodded it yesterday and the sound is so much better! no more pinging!
Thanks Obama!!!
For the flat black cable, there is a kind of small plastic lever that you flip up and it comes loose very easily. There is no need to take the whole controller board off. To put is back you simply reverse the process by facing the metallic conecters down an putting the plastic lever down. (:
thanks man! straight to the point and so helpful
big thanks, the equipment was so cheap and it was worth the build
Glad it worked out for you, thanks for sharing your results!
I don't get how you only have 149 subscribers your videos are so high quality.
Thanks for watching and for the compliment. Glad you liked the video. I don't upload on UA-cam often, but if I find something particularly interesting or I'm passionate about, I like to share with others!
amazing
gonna do this once i get the parts
Your vids are amazing even with not to many subs your vids are very high quality
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Great Video, I have a Razer Huntsman Mini with the clicky switches, I know what you mean by the pinging sound I'm going to give this a try!
I just did this! When you pop the switches out you can squeeze the side pegs together (if you have nails) and they push out easily.
Great tips - the mini sounds a lot better.
Brooo im kinda scared to do it to mine should i do it???
Thanks for the help! I just lubed my huntsman TE and it sounds so good!
Do you think I should do it too? Im worried about destroying my keyboard, but i want them to sound as good as they do with lube.
@@samsonstevens7181 i 100% recommend doing it, I’m 13 and I did it all on my own, just maybe use gloves with padding so your thumb won’t hurt when pressing out the switches, make sure you get the right lube and if you want you can use foam, I didn’t and it sounds way better without anything. It also may sound like you’re breaking the main board when you press out the switches since it’s loud but all around it’s quite easy. Let me know if you need anymore help.
@@saul1372 lol I'm also a kid People always seem to think kids can't do this stuff. Yeah honestly I think I may. I've been working on getting my gaming setup to its best, and this mod costs like 10 bucks. So I think I'll do it. I'll make sure to ask if I need anything else
@@samsonstevens7181 alright, cool
@@saul1372 Could you give an update how it works after 2 months? I am about to lube my TE and I am crazy anxious about it...
Here is a tip for future reference, for the ribbon cable there is a little plastic switch that just flips up, it is a lot easier than taking the control board off
Been trying to find this comment lol
I like that sound a lot great job bro
Thanks, glad you liked it!
There you go 200 subs BTW thanks for the tutorial
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Nicely made video and great reddit post about it.
Bro you don’t know how much this helped me out im looking to buy it but my country only sells the purple clicky switch which really bugs me. But this is very informative and clear to understand. Thanks a lot Andrew
Thanks! I'm really glad it was useful and helped you out!
Really helpful video, thank you
If anyone actually did this I have mad respect for u
im about to, my keyb sounds like dogshit and i was kind of thinking about just building a new one and selling the huntsman, but i dont have the patience to wait for stuff to come back in stock
@@bloodsausage6635 I did this not too long ago and I can tell you that there is a huge improvement with the sound. However, there is still a bit of rattling on the keys that have the stabilizers (Spacebar is the most notable and of course the Shift Keys). I do recommend getting O-rings for each key and doubling them up. Sounds more buttery smooth. Hopefully yours will turn out great!
i don’t know if i’m gonna get this or the logitech g pro x
I did it, it sounds better now haha
im too scared to do it
This is the one clicky switch that won't turn into a weird linear/tactile switch if you lube it (due to cherry blues having the click jacket and this one using the click bolt)
Im ngl, having all razer products makes you wanna stay with the brand. I have a few other keyboards but having everything connect with synapse is nice. Plus, nanoleaf/phillips hue works with it. Thank you for creating this video so I can modify my keyboard and make it sound/feel better 💪🏾
The razer huntsman mini is a good keyboard don't get me wrong, but the purple switches are a little too much out of the box. These modifications make it so much better. Thanks man you're a hero!
I got the huntsman mini with purple switches like a year ago, I wanted the red switches but they didn't have any red switch variants at best buy (in store), so I just got the purple and finally found this mod (i watched other keyboard videos and know other mods, I was just scared of doing them because I thought this keyboard would be different due to different types of switches.
this is the most under ratet person on youtube
Imma try this thank you bro
The best clicky switch change my mind
For anyone else going to do this mod or anyone wondering why he couldn’t get the ribbon cable off at 2:04 this is because it has a lock to it. Good thing he didn’t pull to hard or he could have broke it. You need to pull up on the locking part and then it should come off easily.
Yeah not too sure why I wasn't able to get it unlocked the first time, but didn't have any issues the second time when I opened it again for lubing. I would still recommend for anyone uncomfortable or struggling with the ribbon cable to just unscrew the small controller board and avoid disconnecting the ribbon altogether.
@@bigxie I just did this mod for the first time ever and had no problem with the ribbon it was just a small task to get back in at the end nice video though
sounds sooo goood!!!
holy shit thats a much better end result then i expected. I truly wish they made the red switches with an activation point of the purples they are just way too much for typing or casual use. Im not a clicky person myself but much prefer the activation point of them. Maybe one day they will create the tactile silent optical. Until then this sounds almost tolerable thanks for sharing!
Thanks, glad you found it useful! In Chyrosran's Huntsman mini review, he mentions that the new red switches, while activating at the same 1mm, actually require more force and therefore aren't super easy to trigger like the TE and actually are more suitable for typing/regular use. ua-cam.com/video/G2TTDzzzjNE/v-deo.html
@@bigxie thats very interesting thanks for sharing that. I currently daily the TE and have since it was release. I believe i was one of the first that took it apart on a reddit thread and used materials and lube. That was great and all but i STILL find myself mis pressing keys just overall too much. I have an old corsair k70 with cherry browns every so often ill plug it up and its just amazing how much more confident i feel using it. Granted its not some huge thing it does bother me and make me consider moving on a lot due to it. Namely in game when im super tiered i will all of a sudden be moving without wanting to press a key from fingers resting on WASD one just a hair too hard lol. This was super bad right off the bat after getting it then again after lube but i figured i would get used to it. Its been quite a while at this point and though its tollerable i just do not like how it can literally press keys sneezing on the damn thing lol. 37 grams activation jesus..
honestly ima try this mod out
wow, I can just imagine how much better my Huntsman Mini with linear switches would sound after lubing them!
No need to imagine, another commenter did this on his linear Huntsman mini and recorded the before/after! soundcloud.com/user-827009208/sets/huntsman-mini-reds-unlubed-lubed
I have the Huntsman Mini with the red switches. I find these much better!
you can choose what switches you can get????! i really like the huntsman te but it has red switches but i really love the purple ones so what should i do?
sound pretty good
You got a sub mate
So I used some foam to dampen some of the noise and it worked great and makes it sound actually more like a clocky key switch, I almost broke it all in the process but it ended up fine. I used a different type of foam that I had to squeeze down to fit in order to put the screws in put I think that made the dampening better than it did in the video.
if you got the red linear switches just adding foam and tape on the stabilizers improves the sound a lot
A FYI is that you can flip up the black part on the ribbon cable connector and it’ll pop right up
between the board and the metal is it possible to install silicone or something to remove the resonance?
thx for this video it has inspired me
You're welcome, thank you for the comment, I appreciate it!
Great video! Just subbed
Thanks, I appreciate it!
yeah that’s why i got a linear switch with huntsman te because my last budget keyboard had that sound so i got a quiet one and i love the sound without the mod
That's just the difference between clicky and linear switches. The Mini is also available in linear (red) switches and they're a lot quieter than the ones in the TE since Razer listened to the complaints from TE owners (too loud, too sensitive) and made improvements in their 2nd gen linears.
@@bigxie the linear switch is more responsive in the linear than the clicky and the clicky has that spring sound with it like my dierya dk63 and razor huntsman te don’t have that
You can flip up the catch for the ribbon cable and it easily detaches
The WD40 Dry lube is really good. i just lubed m switches and the pinging is completely gone. Love the sound of it again
The little grey tab flips up on that ribbon cable to release it
Thank you for the video! I'm looking to mod my Huntsman TE. Can the switches be replaced for any other kind of switch or just Razer's opto-mechanical switch types?
Hi, Razer uses the same OEM for their opto-mechanical switches as Bloody, so technically maybe those LK Libra switches would work as well, but I'd stick to the Razer red and purple switches. The problem with switching switch types in these keyboards is sourcing the extra switches to begin with (as far as I know, they're not sold separately from the keyboards).
Great work this is gonna help me upgrade mine! You just saved me tons of money well done!😃 Also could I lube my switches with WD-40 DRY PTFE LUBRICANT?
must be spray lube
so could you possibly change the purples with the reds also with these steps?
Hey, just recently bought this keyboard and the spring ping is playing on repeat in my mind and i can’t get it off lol. Will lubing my switches with superlube multipurpose PTFE have the same results? (eliminate spring ping/ not ruin the switch, keyboard.) Dry lube isn’t available in my country
Hi brother, how's it going? I have a Razer Huntsman Mini and out of nowhere the I, U, and P keys stopped working, but it's intermittent. Do you know what it could be?
Just the guide Im looking for my man! But one question though, will the lube that you used work well on Razer's linear red keys as well? Im planning to pick the most suitable lube for my Huntsman TKL, the loud pinging and clacky noise are NUTSSS.
Yeah, I did the same procedure to my TE as well using the same lube. You can check out the results here: ua-cam.com/video/NvJ1mh2XkfI/v-deo.html
Wonderful video! Please allow two questions:
1) if I have a mini with red switches, can I replace the red switches with purple ones? If yes, where can I buy purple switches? - I have a mini with red switches but miss the tactile bump, so want to change them...
2) Any chance to have a quick video on how to lube the purple switches? (your camera was hiding your fingers!!).
Thank you!
Hi, you can definitely replace the red switches with purple, but the hard part is sourcing the switches since they're not sold individually. If you're looking for purple switches, the best bet would to be to look for a defective regular Huntsman that someone is selling for cheap.
Regarding the lubing, yeah it's not too clear in the video but you basically just spray up the switch from the bottom. If you need some visuals, a few other channels have since released similar videos after seeing mine. I think randomfrankp has a pretty good one you can check out.
I think it's more of a guilt free purchase if the board came like this than having to do all this work yourself especially those who actually care about the sound and feel of a board but for $120 with that ping? Jesus Christ. Anyways, amazing work man. The board sounds so crisp. Wondering if somehow you do this with the linears in the future
Thanks! Yeah I agree, for the price, it should be a bit better out of the box. Then again, I don't recall any Razer product (except maybe the Viper Mini) that I purchased without feeling some "guilt" for paying the Razer tax. Hard to help myself since they've been putting out some pretty good stuff in general lately. At some point this week I'm going to open up my TE and do the same for the linear switches. I think there are already a couple of other videos on UA-cam of how the lubed Razer linear switches sound. I'll record the before and after and post it up if it's a considerable difference.
@@bigxie I agree too. They also market it for "gamers" so i understand the thought process they go into making these products. Plug and play kind of thing. Gonna watch out for that video. Subbed!
Thanks for the sub! Had some free time this evening and did the same mods to my TE. It makes a pretty considerable difference! I made a quick comparison video here: ua-cam.com/video/NvJ1mh2XkfI/v-deo.html
I know the linears in the Mini are going to be "v2" and be a little more quiet to start with, but I think they will also benefit from being lubed (and the case will definitely still need sound dampening).
I REALLY want to try this on my Razer Huntsman TE
If you haven't checked it out yet, I also have another video on my channel with the results of the same mods for my TE. It made a significant difference!
Do u have other clicky switches as a comparison?
Roughly how much room do ya have for foam/ dampening in this case, I'm looking to do these same mods to my keyboard, but not sure what thickness of foam to use?
I used 2 layers of 1/8" foam, but it compressed in areas, so not quite 1/4" altogether. And different areas will have varying amounts of room, so some areas only fit a single layer.
does any WD-40 fits to doing this? I bought just a regular WD-40 and i dont if it's DRY LUBE or no as it simply is't mentioned on the bottle. it just says WD-40 (stops squeaking, displaces moisture, cleans, protects against corrosion, releases rusted mechanisms). Should it work???
I kinda want to do this I already have linear switches and POM Jellies this would be lowkey the finishing touch
The huntsman mini is not a bad keyboard to be honest, I just traded my tkl blackwidow for one with purple switches and I personally like it and how it doesn't require synapse as much
Thx man ur a legend
I have the silent red switch version and the stock form comes with foam pre-installed
how thick in mm does the EVA foam have to be?
Hi! I would like to ask if i can use krytox 205g0 grease lube for huntsman mini purple clicky switches? Thank you
If you can find a way to evenly apply it to each switch. But they don't open like traditional switches, so that is why I suggest using the teflon based spray lube.
how did you take out the stabilizer keycaps, my razer keyboard seems like the stabs are in the bottom of the keycap being held to the board by a wire
Those posts attached to the bottom of the keycaps need to be pulled out with some pliers and then attached to the new keycap. When it's put back in, they'll grab on to the wires below.
Would putting in more foam sound better or would it be for naught?
I tried to do the same thing but the middle sliver screw isn’t coming of? Is there supposed to be two different screws your supposed to use???
The screws should all be the same size. It's possible that your screwdriver isn't an exact fit so it was able to remove the other screws since they weren't in as tight, but is slipping or stripping this screw. Be careful not to strip the screw because then it will be very difficult/impossible to remove.
I have a question when i take the razer switches out am i able just to put in a cherry mx switch ?
Im new to mechanical keyboards so i dont know stuff like this
Unfortunately the Huntsman line is only compatible with Razer's own proprietary optomechanical switches, and does not support traditional MX style switches. If you're looking for a nice 60% hotswap keyboard that supports MX style switches around the pricepoint of the Huntsman Mini, check out the Kemove Snowfox.
As nice as it is, I personally think that as long as it’s fast while gaming (since it IS a gaming keyboard) that that’s all that matters. Which is a tiny bit slower than red switches by 0.25 I believe it was.
Yeah if you're fine with the way it sounds stock, definitely don't do this. Won't be worth the effort and voiding your warranty if your priorities lie elsewhere.
not designed just for gaming tho
For the razer huntsman te how have the keys held up? I really want to do this I’m just afraid of breaking my keyboard. I’ve heard that WD40 can ruin keys but I think there usually talking about normal WD40 and not the specialist dry lube with ptfe. I’m just wondering if anything bad has happened to the keys?
Nothing bad has happened to the switches since I put these on about 5 months ago. Granted, I've picked up some more custom boards since then so I don't use the TE as frequently anymore, but when I do, it works just as well as when I initially performed the mods. I think if you really understand what's going on in the keyboard, you can see that the switches are literally used to block a beam of light that shines across each key on the PCB. If anything were to be interrupted by the lube, it would happen initially, and not over time. What could happen over time (but hasn't to me, maybe due to less frequent use), is that the lubrication offered by the PTFE dry lube will wear off and require another spray a year or so down the line.
I looks like each switch is held in place by tabs on either side that need to be pushed in at the same time to removed them from the plate, have you tried to see if that would work better than just forcing them out?
Yes that works and is probably the better, more proper way to do it 😂
I’m trying to switch out my red linears for the purple ones. Is there anyway I can find some or do I have to look for a refurbished keyboard and just go from there
As far as I know, these switches aren't sold individually. People who have done the swap in the past have gotten them from a donor board (I think the most economical would be a busted Huntsman non-Elite).
Hi I have a question I have a huntsman mini keyboard and I want to know if there a order to connect the cord to your keyboard because I think I connect the cable to my keyboard in the opposite way or it doesn’t matter ? Pls help
The connector is USB-C, which is reversible, so it doesn't matter which direction you plug it in.
@@bigxie thanks bro because I thought I broke the cord because it went through the opposite site of the keyboard
So I've got the huntsman tkl with the reds.. I've found it a little too sensitive. I breathe on the keyboard and it types a sentence I feel like. Is it the actuation. Force or the distance that creates this problem
Yeah, that's really the biggest issue I have with Razer's first gen linear optical switches. There's a review of the Huntsman Mini (linear) by chyrosran22 that goes over the differences between the generations, but the biggest difference is that the first gens actuate at just 37g of force, which is very, very low, and leads to those issues with accuracy when typing.
Hey I know this is an old video, but do you think this works on the tkl version of the keyboard, like could I still take out the switches?
Yes, it works for the TE as well. Check my channel for a video on before/after and the one extra screw that's hidden on the TE vs the Mini (which is the only difference in disassembly).
I want to keep the same loud click so if I just lube them will it keep the click but still make them smoother or do I need foam?
Yeah, the lube will make them smoother and get rid of the spring ping, but not the click. The foam just helps absorb some extra echoes, but it's really the lube that makes majority of the difference. A lot of guides online will tell you not to lube clicky switches since that can reduce the clicking sound, but those are talking about traditional MX style mechanical switches. The way the Razer optical clicky switches work, it's more like clicking a pen, and that mechanism is not affected by the lube (so it will still click loudly and clearly, even after lubing).
Hi I was wondering if you could make a short tutorial on how to remove razer stabs, open them and mod them. I seem to be having a bit if trouble. Thankyou!
When you get to the PCB, you'll see that they are held in pretty simple by a couple of clips. Just unclip them and you can put the lube/dielectric grease wherever the wire and plastic meet.
I have this in Reds, and I think they may have changed things between now and then because it has zero ping. tad scratchy though, and the spacebar def rattles a bit. what mods would you rec then? should i still hose it with dry lube?
That's really interesting to hear, maybe Razer made some improvements since the release (when this video was made). The spray lube addresses both the spring ping as well as scratch. You probably don't need to hose it in lube like I did, just focus on the sliders and click the switches a few times to get it spread out. For the spacebar and other stabilizer rattles, some dielectric grease or thicker traditional lube can help sort those out.
When you remove the key caps can you put in different ones and do you need to loob them first before putting in the key caps
Hey Tyler, the keycaps are replaceable and most 60% kits will fit, since the Huntsman Mini uses a standard layout. There's no need to lube the keyboard or anything just to switch the keycaps. The only sort of tricky thing is that the stabilized keys (shift, backspace, spacebar, enter) have stabilizer posts attached to them that need to be transplanted from the original keycaps on to the new replacements.
hey i have a question. would i be able to take these switches out and put a different switch in like some nk creams? or does the razer board only work with razer switches?
Unfortunately, the PCB in this keyboard is only compatible with Razer optomechanical switches, so basically just their red and purple switches that come in the two different versions of the keyboard.
would it be safe for me to mod the keyboard right away after buying it?
I just did the same mods but I used g lube and I also LUBE EACH STABILIZER ON EACH KEY took forever and also mine had foam in its already bought it from amazon new about a week ago also sounds completely different it is the purple switches as well ( mine is very deep and iswear zero spring pin or rattle even stock ) i can do a video if you want also side note you can get the keyboard for 75 usd now and 10 bucks shipping )
I have the mini with red switches for awhile now i havent heard any ping or had any issue, im quite sure that they added some sort of foam in the switches themselves that has helped alot
Yeah you're right! The Huntsman Mini has improved red switches vs the ones originally introduced in the TE and is significantly quieter out of the box. Even still, the mods can make some pretty noticeable improvements. There's a viewer comment on this video somewhere where he's got a before/after sound test of the reds. But if the stock sound is enjoyable and doesn't bother you, I would just go ahead and keep using it that way!
tbh the main reason i got the mini was the white color to fit my setup, although for the price they could forsure make the stabilizes alot better they can still shake a good amount
@@NailTeeth ypu can lube the stabs and there wont be any rattling anymore
Is it possible to spray wd40 while the switches/stabs are still on the pcb? Im scared i might break something if i push the switches out
And can i use mousepad as foam for the case? Thanks
I think I saw a video where someone did that and it worked, but I wouldn't recommend it. The switches just clip into the PCB and if you loosen the clips before pushing the switch out, there is no risk of damage to the PCB. Spraying the switches once they're removed and giving them ample time to dry is the best way to avoid any issues. The issues arise from the PCB as the switches themselves have no electrical function and pretty much act as glorified light blockers for the PCB.
Is this applicable to the Huntsman elite? I mean are the switches removable too for the elite just like the mini?
Yes, this is also applicable to the Elite. Take care when opening it up though, since it's much more complex (there's that diffuser layer as well as that magnetic connector for the wrist rest). Once you get to the PCB, the switches and stabs come out the same way and you can do the same mods. I did these mods to my Elite as well but unfortunately, I broke the fragile wrist rest connector so now it no longer lights up. Sounds a lot better though!
Do you think it's possible to apply the dry lube with a brush so you don't have to disassemble the keyboard?
The switches don't really pop out of the PCB without disassembly of the keyboard (unlike a traditional hotswap keyboard).
quick question how long will the lube last inside on the keyboard
I haven't really seen any degradation in the year and a half since I made the video. Optimistically speaking, it may last longer than the ownership of the keyboard. Worst case you may need to refresh it every couple of years.
So if i will remove the switches will they work after i will install them back? Are they removable or they will break?
Yes, the switches can be removed and replaced (as demonstrated in the video) and will still work. There are no electronics on the switch, all it does is block the beam of light and allow it through when pressed down (the electronics for emitting and receiving the light beam are on the PCB itself).
Love the video, but which size screws are used on the board?
I'm not familiar with the screw size standards, but if you have a philips head screwdriver included in an electronics repair kit, it will work to take out the screws.
