I see you spend a lot of time on the lighting of your characters.
I recommend using Blender 3D software to figure that out.
If you want to go that way, you just make or use someone else's human female model, pose it, and put your lighting everywhere.
It's possible to use Blender's grease pencil if you would like to draw over the model too. That would be drawing in 3D space.
i think the problem is on a systemic level where its reaching a complete antihuman place, an economic model that is not interested in people and its expressions other than as a product. sure it has always had that vision but we are reaching a point where it wants to eradicate us, it sees no value in human activity. its not a problem of technology, its a market economy development problem and "we" are complicit in this process, when people started thinking it was a good idea using the language of market for art andfor ourselves. we are at the crossroad and a sort of ultimate conflict is in the horizon, simply burring the head in the sand and playing along being a "good boy" will not work anymore..
How do you keep the color palette on the desktop ?
I don't feel inadequate because of AI image generation, I feel inadequate when I realize I don't know how to market what I'm doing correctly and I get a perception that people no longer give a f**k lol
I feel inadequate when I go to galleries and see them selling for thousands and I can’t get people to take a watercolour I left in a hotel elevator. To be fair it went missing a couple times but then it keeps getting put back. Hilarious and humbling all at the same time.
That in it self makes you an artist my friend.
There are plenty of people out there learning all the mathematics behind art who just like A.I. can create anything. But they don't feel anything. They are calculating every aspect of what they are doing. That's not art, that's just craftsmanship. Which is something everyone can do, given the right tools.
True artist rarely know how to reach their customers them selves. So true art gets lost in basements and attics. Few survive. But those that do, when they get found. Their value is priceless. That's how you become a famous artist. If you are lucky. You'll still be alive when it happens. If you are even more lucky. Your family is alive to recieve the gift from you.
Keep painting/drawing/sculpting true art. Don't do the harddrive art. As it won't be the same feeling to find it.

I have been making art for many years and I think that your comment has actually given me a lightbulb moment to better understand what art actually is. It's not so much about the craft as you say, but it's about what the artist was going through or expressing when they made their art. There are many famous artists that I have struggled to understand why they are so popular. But the reason they resonate with people or critics is because of their MESSAGE and what they were going through while making their art. Sure, I think we all enjoy looking at gorgeous and impeccably crafted art, and many of us like to strive for that. But if there is a reason for it's creation that is extremely powerful.
I think this is A GREAT thing to notice!
Because the main issue I had with art (as an artist and a consumer) was that everyone was just doing "pretty pictures". Everyone has been so focused on trying to have the most "profitable" art style, that allows them to sell their fanart illustrations of pretty anime women... No, what AI is forcing people to do is Projects. Projects are what actually sell. A comic/manga sells because it's a project, not a singular illustration that has to carry itself.
But it also forces people to deepen their subject matter. It forces them to incorporate storytelling, that they can't just draw characters posing anymore. Which I really like. Art has felt like a consumer product in the recent years, where everything I see is just a... Pose.
I always felt that the REAL beauty of Art & Creativity is in the PROCESS not the result. Ever since I was young I was always FASCINATED with musicians being able to PLAY music on the spot for fun, artists drawing live DEMOS, writers spontaneously coming up with STORIES, florists making beautiful BOUQUETS, and more!
The finished piece is only part of that WHOLE journey, sometimes even when I can’t stay long to see the result, it didn’t change HOW AMAZED I am by the experience 😌❤️
Music is a good example of this. You can listen to virtually any piece of music on Spotify extremely easily but people still go to concerts. Entire arenas are being sold out by certain artists. And a majority of my appreciation towards art comes from wanting to understand how the artist did it. I find it kind of concerning how many people are simply not even curious about the things they pretend to like or care about. I guess a lot of people see learning new things as a something that they should avoid at all cost. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but personally I'd much rather learn about everything myself than let the AI do it. If I really like something, I want to learn as much about it as possible.
Im trying to find a way to make art a similar experiential value to music and dance for these same reasons.
@@ergojosh I like that, what have you found so far? Maybe stuff like graffiti or what Kim Jung Gi did? A while ago I did a snow sculpture for fun. A lot of people stopped and watched and wanted to talk about it. I have always felt like art was most alive while it was being made, it changes and moves kinda like a living thing and that's really entertaining to people.

I hope people will start understanding that there is no such thing as AI "art". There are only AI "images". Only living, breathing humans can create true art.

Facts
The AI is not sentient, it can not produce an image without it's prompts. Those prompts can only be activated by humans. So humans are creating the art, AI art is art and it's a fact of life many will have to adjust to quickly within the next few years.

There are many things that you can do when making art. But thinking is the last thing you want to do, that'll make you go insane.
I think/feel [what word fits best into this sentence?] if you were to maybe rephrase your teacher it would be more fitting. *"But to learn to FEEL before and while you paint"

The thing about that advice is that, like pretty much any advice, depending on the person it may not ring true because of their own struggles.
For me, I used to (and still do. Working on it) overthink my art. Because I lacked the necessary workflow or any kind of base or foundation to work off of, and as a result a lot of was guesswork and trial and error to find my way, which resulted in me taking extremely long amounts of time for even the simples of pieces.
What I learned recently, is that there has to be a balance. If you want to both understand what you're doing, be confident and decisive, and finally, do it efficiently and quickly, it's important to both take a moment to analyze and think, when it's appropriate, and find ways to make other parts of the process as mindless as possible through development of consistent "recipes" for drawing various things that you can follow without straining your brain.
Art books point out it's the ability to see the world. The parts our day to day brain glosses over. The details it saves us from.

first thing i was taught in art school was to build a visual library; anything cool or interesting from textures to characters or even lighting in some image. take photos of neat buildings or colorful sunsets etc- save it to a folder or something to use as references, and when you need them you have a whole library of stuff to use and combine. its helped me a TON over the years
I REALLY feel the tropes thing, like drawing black people with dreads, but the dreads are snakes, or like brightly coloured, or magical. Drawing afros but they're like...stand in for planets or something. Having the black character only ever wearing yellow or orange. It's exhausting as tropes.
Throw in all the African King/Queen Ai art that covers sites like redbubble and etsy lol. It actually gets easy to be different.

Nice painting + inspiring message. When Jackie Chan was asked how he competed with Bruce Lee... he said "I kicked when Lee punched". While Lee was making "Enter the Dragon" and other "serious" kung fu, Chan was making "Half Loaf of Kung Fu" and other "comedy" kung fu. The key to success is (and will always be) to stand apart from the competition and find the strength in your own "voice".
terrible message, now with ai it is easier for ai artists to find gaps in the market and mix and match new concepts. also cellphones you can carry in your pocket are more powerfull that computers that took up whole rooms in the 80s

You’ve got to remember that the art generated by ai is trained from real artists, so that would only add more content for them to take from. The reason ai is bad at hands is because it’s also a common human artist struggle.
Good advice and this might be a hyper specific comment, but I've always loved the way you color water or moisture on skin. It's so detailed and really brings your art into that 4D space. It also just makes me feel hydrated for some reason.

I picked a mantra early on, roughly to the tune of: AI image generators don't know what anything "is" so much as what it "looks like". Having thrown quite a few prompts into a few generators myself, all I can say is that this sentiment proved itself even more true over time.
So if you posted a picture of a car and labelled it "toaster" then you could screw with the AI's training? What if a bunch of people started purposefully posting thousands of images on various sites and then purposefully mislabeling them. I mean like 20 posts everyday so that any AI that scrapes those images gets screwed up.
@@Nexalian_Gamer Theoretically, yes that is possible, but I'd suspect it's unlikely that any large amount of obvious mis-tagging would be allowed into the AI's training algorithm to begin with. A crucial part of these training processes is (obviously enough) deciding what actually constitutes good training data.
Finally an artist who just look the facts. IA has a totally different working process than human brain.
I'm not an artist, but I've use daily IA image generation, hoping I can create my own style and bet good artist (foolish me) And you now what ? Since couple of month I start learning how to draw. For exactly the reasons you describe in your video. IA is not creative, data-quality dependent (you don't have the control of that over the IA model).
Also, I realized when drawing about the process of drawing, taking inspiration mix with personal memories and/or random things who came out of your mind not necessary related to your work. And this process is almost equally important than the final result of your work. IA can't do that, at least until the next decade as you said.

Agreed, and not only corporations, I've seen artists using AI (and they know how to draw very well). For example, I have a friend that wants to open an art school, but for teaching AI... it pisses me off

Generated imagines are not subject to US copyright law. If you were to--say--download one of these images with the intention to sell it at rock-bottom prices that only keeps whatever online store you may or may not have opened available, the person trying to "win" off the AI image couldn't do anything about it. Even better, if you say something like "This needs to be on a tee shirt!" as a comment about the piece, this may or may not pit the AI "artist" against the AI "seller" for a good laugh.
All this is theoretical. I am not suggesting you do anything to harass anyone.

TLDR: Human creativity and ingenuity is a byproduct of being a conscious living being who can interpret the world, while AI "ingenuity" is just trying to mimic the **result** of human creativity and ingenuity but without actually understanding or interpreting information
I've been saying this since the start of the whole AI fad, AI isn't really optimal for the things we want it to be. For context, I'm a programmer, so I'm viewing it from a different perspective than most artists. At least to my understanding, which I'll readily admit is not that of an AI specialist, AI is created through essentially repetition, you define a goal and "train" an AI by repeatedly simulating how they interact with a dataset, choosing the best one from each simulation and starting the next simulation off with that AI, and a bunch of random tweaks to it. Over time this process refines the AI and makes it more and more complicated, but the problem is, it is **highly** sensitive to the input parameters. AIs don't think like humans, which is a hard thing for us to imagine, but when they interpret an image they have no subconscious mind pointing out the little details and understanding it. We can only train AI not to actually understand and internalize concepts and ideas, but rather to create a somewhat predictable or expected response to datasets, but with no actual interpretation or understanding. This makes it highly sensitive to input parameters because it doesn't have a subconscious to guide it in the correct direction like humans do, it just chooses whichever AI scores highest on the arbitrary test created by the designer, which makes it really difficult to predict because sometimes the most efficient solution to problems are not at all what we'd envision. This can lead to a lot of edge cases that can seriously cause problems if they aren't double checked and eliminated by someone before they're used. Another example is hallucination, like in ChatGPT, where the AI model is trained to associate "tokens" to other tokens, which allows it to tokenize input text and predict words that it algorithmically thinks matches the tokens already present. This allows it to somewhat simulate human speech, but when a concept that is underrepresented in it's dataset comes up, it just hallucinates answers because it doesn't have 100 different instances of that exact question being answered in it's dataset, so it doesn't make the link that this specific question (token set) requires the answer to be this other specific token set. Instead, it treats it as regular human speech with no nuance or understanding of the question, and so just creates an answer that *sounds* right given the wording of the question (which is highly unreliable).
AI is far more useful as an assistant, in my opinion. A tool that, due to it's nature, is very proficient in creating generic baselines or accomplishing menial repetitive tasks for it's user who can then start where it left off and refine it to actually make sense. This is the reason why these AIs have to have such massive datasets, and why so many people are arguing that it's already plateaued. It's seeming "Intelligence" isn't the byproduct of a conscious mind that can interpret the world, it's essentially just mimicry. Don't get me wrong though, this mimicry can be a good thing, and can certainly fool many people for a time being, but it's just inherently flawed and unpredictable because of how it works. In my opinion, AI can be a massive tool to propel humanity forward if we stop hyping it up and deploy it in ways that are actually useful and not just party tricks like generating paragraphs.
There's an AI assistant programmer called Github Copilot that generates code snippets for you based on, and to be quite honest, it's great for menial and repetitive tasks like multiplying out a matrix or something else that is definitely represented enough in it's dataset for it to get right (although you still 150% have to check it because it is super unreliable sometimes), but I had to create a keybind to disable Copilot in my code editor because it just kept suggesting ridiculous things, and I intuitively glanced at them and thought " okay this isn't nonsense, it'll probably work, it can't be too bad " and accept it's solution, just to find out 5 hours later that it had a flawed edge case that completely wasted my day as I scoured my code base to figure out where I went wrong when it was really just the AI suggestion that hallucinated an answer because it had no understanding of the concepts. I now only really use copilot for repetitive things that can very easily be checked by a human, everything else I do manually because it's just not worth the risk, especially since AI has no understanding of these concepts, making it very susceptible to security vulnerabilities and edge-cases.
Overall, all this AI trend is really disheartening, not because it's going to be 'stealing' our jobs, but because it shows how blindsided we can be over novelties like talking to a computer when the technology itself can be used for much more advanced purposes if employed correctly. Again, I'm not an AI specialist so who knows, maybe I'm wrong and stupid and this will be brought up in my court case in 50 years where my AI lawyer will defend me to the AI judge in the AI courts, but from what I can tell so far, we're really missing out on a lot of the great parts of AI because we want the novelty of saying "look, I can talk to my computer and have it generate images for me" (not to mention the ethical concerns of all of it).
Also I'm aware I didn't mention the ethical part of using other peoples work to train AIs, since that's more subjective and up for debate and I just wanted to shed light on my understanding of the technical inner workings of AI. Because these companies are using AI for novelty tasks like talking or image generation as opposed to actual datasets of information, it requires a massive amount of examples for it to understand, which for something as complicated and nuanced as art and human speech, is very very difficult to obtain (which is why there's really only a handful of decent AI chatbots, all of which use scraped data off the internet to try and supplement the ridiculously large data set it needs to mimic humans in a believable way). This dataset approach is limited though, and because datasets are inherently limited and the AIs have no actual understanding of the concepts, it will eventually plateau unless there's a larger dataset (which I'd expect to get harder and harder as the dataset increases in size).
Again, I'm not an AI specialist or expert, and if you are, feel free to explain why I'm wrong, but generally this is my understanding of it. Hope this is informative or helpful. :)
Totally random and unknown artist here, I just wanted share that I was really devastated with the improvements with genAI the past 2 years or so (be it Stable Diffusion reliant "programs/software popping up here and there, Dall E , MidJourney ref or some other LoRA BS crawling out of the woodwork) in combination with "other methods" to make the image "legit" over the analog approach, be it digital or traditional ( meaning drawing or painting without the assistance of these genAI image generators ) that...and some of the artists I look up to (when I was younger) who are also shortsighted and embracing the genAI hype without much consideration or thought as to why there is so much discourse...drove me to the point of understanding the word "Memento Mori" and really sinking/doubling down on the art fundamentals even more than ever. I finally understood why the true process of art creation is really valuable
The pieces I have created most probably will be buried (or yet, something even worse) but I've relinquished the thought of things outside of my control and just focus on things I do have control over. I probably would not survive the year or so but nevertheless, I will struggle to the end as an act of rebellion to this "hyper consumerism" going around in our current society.

Not only have you convinced me quite a lot to get over the fear of AI taking over art/music but also your search experiment and your further explaining on how AI and its limitations work kind of showed me that I didn't see the forest for trees on my search for my musical identity, because my thoughts were all over the place so I forgot to see what's really the key to being unique. I recently came across such a moment that I cornyly helped one person with a drawing. And now my server has been forcing me to draw again all week. At the same time, I have not painted anything for more than 3 years, I have not practiced, and my syndrome turns off my hand due to a neurological disorder. Of course, I have no motivation, at the moment I have a banal basic basics.

Great overview for the Milanote app, this is just what I need to help reign in some character developments. I definitely enjoy processing/sampling my original sketches through AI driven apps to create custom styles that help with maintaining consistency.
Midway though working a piece I often see a visual connection that I had not considered. It is a Eureka moment; taking the time to find references for this new element before enhancing that detail on your piece, something which takes it to the next level. Sometimes it takes you in a whole new direction, and sometimes it could be a subtle hue shift, but it is totally worth it.
Anyways, my advice, don't be afraid to look up references midway through the creative process.

I remember hearing the president of microsoft say that if you think AI is going to take over, you underestimate human ingenuity.
There are always people like me for example who appreciate the craft and see a clear difference in what is presented. AI generated images looks always the same, it is an impressive peace of technology but that's about it. It's like a interesting feature that some apps have or even smth to produce advertisments cheaper.
However there is Art which takes my breath away, that makes me think or feel at home, creating a new point of view or showing something that is familiar to the human nature. These are never AI generated images. They can trick you, they might steal your job but they cannot replace art - the moment art dies, humanity dies

To be honest... That's gotta be the best video that I've watched from you and about IA. I remember 2 years ago that one of your videos had me all demotivated to continue doing art in a time that I wanted to make a living out of it and I pretty much gave up of art, only sketching from time to time. This year I came back with art and it's been amazing, because I don't care about money or likes, I just want to do the weird stuff that I like. This video is actually good because you bring so many arguments of how humans STILL are the best creators out there (not entering the religious aspect of things, just maintaining in the mortal world here), without being disrespectful and how we can still produce so many beautiful, impactful, soul-touching things despite the existence of IA. That was a nice video. Was kinda worried about the title but it surprised me!
Oh, and don't get me wrong, I like your work, like your art, but just don't feel very aligned with your overall content (probably because of the past and the give up art stuff), but I still keep hanging around because of times like this, where you post something that actually makes sense to me and motivates me. Guess that's something that IA cannot do as well... So keep it up with the good work!

terrible video about, now with ai it is easier for ai artists to find gaps in the market and mix and match new concepts. also cellphones you can carry in your pocket are more powerfull that computers that took up whole rooms in the 80s. you also cant compare calulations per second with computers and human brains. even older chips are much faster at doing mathimatical calculations etc than humans

Listening to this reminded me of something. I went to pintrest and the "art" is great I felt that it is better then me but then I was like "f*ck it" I'll use it for a pose ref cuz its nice. That was until I saw the errors the highlights, the hair, the eyes something is off about ai generation and because of it being everywhere I knew it was ai in seconds and even non artist are learning it too. Ai gen images are like having a cheap fast food burger, it looks and taste ok enough but that nice chef cooked one will ALWAYS be better. I finished the piece and while yes I used ai for the pose because of my actual skill in digital art the colors are more fun in my piece in my opinion. I for once was proud because I think we truly will be ok in the long run hell the big boy companies are at more risk then us because why would I get a job at some big art stealer when I can work with machines to do my own thing? I'll feel doom and gloom every once in a while but gosh i will never regret choosing to be an artist.
Yup, never include it in your workflow if you want authenticity or quality. It's cheap and pretty and empty.

I had nearly everything I had created scraped from the 4 gallery sites that fed the AI art engines. After Meta changed their ToS this past February I was forced to pull my work off of just about every social site to protect my rights with those pieces. All of this isn’t a problem for most people just learning to create or are not trying to make a living from their art. I’ve had some strong differences of opinions from yours in the past. This is one that I’m happy to be in agreement with you on! No set back is ever worth stopping to be creative. The rhetoric of the day should only make us want to create more. I love what you did with the piece and the topic!

AI AutoGen art will find its place. And that place is commerce. Its biggest attraction to commerce is also its biggest flaw; high yield. Great for a sector that only needs Art. A lot of Art. And quick. And at a low cost.
^ And, in a global free market, you're now in a race to the bottom. (And that's not even addressing the legal shackles commerce faces when using current AutoGen tools under current licensing laws).
Your advice to lean into the personal is spot on.
This is where uniqueness happens. This is where reputation lives. And where human-to-human connection resides. So, even though we like to think our art speaks for us it's simply not enough anymore; people crave connection - so you need to be present in the work in some shape or form: make Human Intelligence (Not-So-Auto-Gen)Art.
Seek out a community of your own; Kevin Kelly's 1,000 true fans. Or find those brand-aware companies that comprehend the value a human (artist) brings to what they make; these are the spaces where an art career can be found.
You speak very true. It's not the art itself that makes it popular but the connection to you that makes it truly special. Well until we figure out how to copy and transfer souls. And yes that is possible but we are no where near able to do it.

Thanks for making this video! I did notice AI has some weaknesses that you mentioned like always adding clothes, light skinned, etc. It’s so hard to find someone who is tan, mixed race, dark skin, etc. Because it’s just pulling data that’s commonly available in the internet. I’d say my biggest worry with AI is how it will affect the job market. I do animation and I was working at a studio, and AI tools is already being used, mostly to speed up workflow but majority of the time it’s all done by hand still. The hardest part for me is that it’s already so hard to be able to work in a studio and get foot into that space even with a degree. I may have to rely on social media and start my own side hustle while working a retail job. I’ve personally started learning to code recently and I want to go back to college one day into Computer Science. However, I will still make art and animation on the side since it’s what I enjoy doing. For now, like you mentioned, I have to work harder to make myself stand out among AI tools. My personal goal is to be able to work remote while doing a side hustle, and still have some flexibility for myself to enjoy life. I can only hope that AI will make more jobs instead of taking away jobs. The hard part is I always loved art and technology, and AI comes along. I still want to get into art and coding despite the rise of AI, I just need to adapt somehow.
Cars didn't make more jobs for horses, I don't see why AI would make more jobs for humans.

"A reason to finish". i really wonderful statement! i have all sorts of art that is stalled or abandoned. i resigned myself to say "At least I had fun being creative." having fun and exploring is very important and therapeutic for me. BUT at some level FINISHING a project is equally fun and and also important for growth... if i want to be honest to with myself, i must admit that never finishing them and saying "I had fun being creative" is more of an excuse to not push myself. I get you Josh, I've had those feelings too, but in fact I'm continuing to create now (partially) to _spite_ generated art and prompters. Your illustrations just keep amazing me. "AI" can be a great tool for consolidating references, or get a launching point but it really needs to be ethically sourced
Edit: I just tried looking up "dark-skinned water nymph" on Bing. Holy hell the situation is dire. Nothing south of "olive", unless you count purple or green... Not like that can't be beautiful, but it skirts inclusion of other real life skin tones that don't get a lot of play in fantasy fiction universes.
Thank you for the video! It's real nice to have an artist's perspective, one who also looked into the subject pretty extensively and isn't just here to paint everything in doom and gloom. What worried me the most about the entire AI art thing was corporate greed, and now what may "fix that issue" is corporate greed. Outside of that, great idea with looking into untapped markets when it comes to specific subjects, and I agree with your last points. Doing what you feel like doing, even if it doesn't end up standing out that much, still may create something more unique. And if it doesn't, you had fun making a thing that felt like an expression of you, which is a much better feeling than refreshing the page to see how many likes you got, and beating yourself up because it's not doing numbers.
Met up with my senior artteacher for the first time in like 2 years, and when she heard I got into artschool she immediately started talking about how I had to learn how to use ai to create art so I could get a headstart in the market :/ if my artschool has mandatory ai courses I might honestly just drop out

Ai works off an algorithm which aims for traditionally "beautiful"/aesthetic results
The probleme here is not that the golden ratio is suddenly bs or not working anymore, IT IS
the problem is that art isn't strictrly about one static concept of "beauty". Often it's not even about visual beauty but about the poetic one.
And this is exactly why most people thinking, AI will make artists obsolete don't understand much about the spirit of art. AI is programmed to please the averange person, not to provoke new thoughts or ideas. This is why AI images all look so dead and similar to each other.
Last semester I actually prepared a 50minutes presentation about the importance of not going for the mathematically-optimal option (e.g. calculating mathematically "perfect" color palettes is already possible for YEARS, based off color-theory-principles we can optimize a palette to fit the average psycholocal human behavior).
Malevich's "Black Square" is one of my favorite examples of imperfection catching human attention. Perfection isn't of any interest for long and that has evolutionary reasons (calculating dangers etc.).
Another important part of art is CONSCIOUS decision-making. Like the saying goes: "You can only break the rules if you know them" and breaking rules to create something new and personal is where the personal spirit flows into the artwork most effectively.
A more modern example for this would be the illustrations by Jeff Lee Johnson. The whole construction of his illustrations, specifically "blue plate special" utelizes the golden ratio and human behaviorals to lead the eyes in a very distinct way (the longer you look at it the more you will see what I mean)

We have a lifetime of experiences that have shaped and refined our values. AI is an average of a tiny sliver some people have shared on the internet. Knowing the specifics of what really drives you is what makes your art stand out against AI images superficially imitating your style.
You're very correct about your observations with Image Generators and race. Interestingly enough, AI also has a lot of difficulty generating ideas that deviate from strict gender norms, conventional beauty standards, and, frankly, anime-esque body types.
Back when I was toying with generators to see how screwed artists might be, I discovered that AI just did not know how to generate some relatively straightforward things. For example; a male character with a braid, a femme man with any body type other than "twink", a woman with a scar over one eye, a chubby black man with glasses, a female character with a buzzed head, or a female character with muscles. It's come a long way since then, but I doubt its reference pool has diversified enough to do these things reliably, because . . .
. . . if you give it one feature, it often makes unwanted associations along the way, *even if you specify "don't do that."* Ask it to make a male character wearing earrings, and suddenly he's a woman with a face of full makeup. Ask it to generate a Korean man with acne, it makes him a flawless kpop idol.
The technology cannot help but extrapolate way past what you want it to.
Women are more likely to be drawn and photographed wearing jewelry, so if you ask for that, it references women. The Korean men that get photographed frequently and drawn in fanart are celebrities and models, not average dudes, so obviously, it will draw from that. And of course, the average artist avoids depicting acne and the average model has theirs hidden with makeup and photoshop. So, how is it supposed to get images of that? Medical close-ups? Cool, now there's acne on the beige wall behind your subject, and he still looks like he came out of a music video!
The capacity to reference any combination of ideas outside of the clean-scrubbed conglomerated average puts artists way ahead of this tech. People who are impressed and satisfied with AI are those who can't conceive of artwork that pushes beyond these norms.
The whole thing makes me want to laugh. I no longer think AI is a threat to my art.

i always find it so fascinating and amazing just how different every artists' workflow and experience can be. hearing the vast mount of difference in techniques and brainstorming is always cool. also; to add to the discussion of what makes AI images not as good as or inferior to human art is just that; it wasn't made by a human. there was no thought or intention put into it, it was created by a machine by blending up a bunch of stuff into an *approximation* of an idea, but with none of the intentionality or drive or purpose that a human artist would bring. i don't get excited by AI art, i'm not made interested by AI art, because there's no story behind it. it's all flat and lifeless. you could show me the most beautiful, intricate piece of AI-generated art, and put it next to a simple doodle done by a human, and i'd prefer the human's doodle every single time.

the REAL reason that companies are hyping up AI so much is because they *want* to make people worry that they'll be replaced- but they can't actually do it. because, like josh says, they're not really all that "smart".

Hi fellow artist here! I LOVE YOUR video, I never watched your video until now. I am a techie and also an artist so I had no choice but to be thrown in the ai space AND to not see it as "competition" but a tool to enhance and streamline the creative process. I am very few artist who have totally embraced ai because like you, I noticed that the black representation was lacking! So I found an opportunity and carved a name for myself using art, and ai! You can stand out, outside of the fact that your work is beautiful, I want to stay hopeful that people will eventually value human made art BECAUSE it wasnt generated in seconds! Time, thought, concept, inspiration all the things that make our art what it is will eventually be valued by those that care. My speculation is that in a few months to few years ai art will have it's own niche and sphere and artist who catch on and are aware will find a way to stand out and progress.

A title like this creates expectations that aren't met.
Essentially he says image generation ai is limited to what it's been trained on, and what it's been trained on tends to be popular and common things. "Just do something that isn't done so much". This statement, albeit hopeful, is inaccurate. The latest models of Sora and Dall-e3 have been able to generate things it wasn't trained on.
They've added the ability to 'speculate' and imagine. There are sora videos of a turtle made out of gem stones walking on the beach sand, reflecting and refracting light as it's faceted, hard skin, someho still moves organically. There's a video of a whale-squid, swimming about and circling the camera/diver.
23:00 I'm putting this stamp comment here so future me can re-listen to you explain why human brains are better than computers. This was a very good message to hear, especially when I think I'm not worth much.
Truth is, even on my worst days, my brain is more efficient and clever than all the best robots we can make. The fact that I sometimes only use it to lay on the couch watching Psych re-runs, doesn't mean it's not still a Good Powerful Brain 😅 and that's good to know!
I think you and everyone else who feels down about AI art is totally valid. I felt the same for awhile when it started blowing up. I have cultivated an acceptance though cause I truly don't think it is going anywhere. AI is part of human evolution unfortunately but that doesn't mean that things have to be as grim as our brains are making things out to be. The rise of AI (I believe) is going to usher in a renaissance of human made art. I think that people that don't care if something is made by people or AI never did care and they will never be our audience. But a large amount of people do care and I think that AI art will strengthen those peoples love for handcrafted pieces with a human touch.
You make a lot of awesome points. AI is never gonna replace human creativity. It can only work in the space it has source material from. BUT humans will never replace AI creativity, as theres a speed and rehashing of different media that statistically humans will not land on. Both Human Art and AI Art explore different areas of potential artwork that can exist, bringing them into this reality. They shouldn't be competing, because the space that Human Artists can explore is infinitely larger than AI Artists. AI is never a replacement for Humans, but a tool so Artists and non-artist creatives alike can increase the tools and materials they have to work with.
Loved the millinote tutorial too! Inspiring, as I'm gonna get an iPad Pro soon, and it'll help me a lot with my digital art. (I'm used to using a trackpad) Can helo me sort through my references and saved AI Images to create far better pieces than I could with my traditional art.

3:51 Really called me out here. I have mostly WIPs that I put on ice for 'the time being' which usually ends up being forever. I cant pinpoint why that is, mostly think I'm lazy (which tbh isnt entirely wrong) but whenever others talk about their struggles and how they solve them I can relate and try to apply some strategies for myself which motivates me at least for a moment to try again. Maybe my trying again should be finishing a piece that I started, even if it means changing it entirely instead of starting anew which makes me end up in the same WIP-cycle I was in before 😅

Ai isn't really listening when you try to direct it. Im much faster just painting away. And it's only good at generic stuff. Eventually we will direct virtual experiences, interactive stories, with the ai writing, acting, and creating the visuals, but we'll still be creative, providing ideas and meaning.
Have you tried stable diffusion with control net? I get half-decent results if I’m not asking for very specific things, and it does significantly speed up my process. Still needs a lot of overpainting though, and the lack of layers will force you to adopt a very different workflow if you’re used to working with a lot of layers. It can be pretty fun, honestly! However, if you have a very clear idea of what you want, and especially if the subject isn’t humanoid, you're better off not using AI at all. It’s very bad at gore, especially.

I found stable diffusion super generic but the Microsoft image with Dalle3 is mind blowing & you can literally write a whole story & tell it to illustrate certain scenes, or ofc u could give it prompts like those other programs. It doesn’t work the same way though. I see people’s SD prompts are just a bunch of words whereas Dalle3 is natural language.
