This week, we visit probably the most interesting type of Singapore housing - the shophouse. This historic 100-year-old house in Katong is home to Jake and Kylie and has been beautifully renovated at a cost of $250,000, with a design focus on preserving its historic details and charm. Jake and Kylie both work from home, so the space was designed around work and play, making it the perfect oasis for them to live and work in.
As you step inside, you'll be greeted by a spacious and inviting living area. The design here is flexible, with no built-in furniture, allowing Jake and Kylie to adapt the space as needed. Interestingly, this area used to have a fish pond, but subsequent owners have converted it into storage space instead.
One of the most striking features of the house is the central stairwell. This was built by the previous owner, and Jake and Kylie chose to keep it as a nod to the heritage of the space. It also doubles as a storage cabinet, with a loft netting into the space of the second and third floor study area, which creates an interesting creative space.
Jake and Kylie wanted privacy for their main entrance, but also desired cross ventilation, so they installed a 2-layer glass door and louvered door. They also kept the original colors of the doors and windows, and chose a pastel pink for the walls to complement the green.
As you enter the dining area, your eyes are naturally drawn to the twin arch doors, which lead to the kitchen and bathroom. The dining area has been expanded, and a dry pantry was installed for light food preparation. The kitchen features a skylight and stainless steel countertops and backsplash for easy maintenance. The bathroom has been updated with textured walls and a terrazzo basin.
On the second floor, the bedroom and bathroom have been combined to create a simple, clutter-free space with flushed storage and textured finishes. They chose microcement and a terrazzo basin for the bathroom, adding more texture to the space.
As Jake and Kylie both work from home, they have a big study that was formed from 2 previous rooms. This space provides a perfect workspace for them to be productive and creative. Additionally, the loft netting from the stairwell provides a really interesting space that allows them to be creative.
Finally, the family room doubles as a guest room and indoor plant oasis for Kylie. Here, you'll find three English cast iron lamp posts, adding a touch of nostalgia to this charming shophouse.
Special thanks to Kylie and Jake for showing us around their beautiful home!

I love how they place their TV right next to the stairs, which is also very grand and beautiful

3:55 arched doors are cool and playful. Reminds me of a Willy Wonka scene when the winners walk through and change to a different size! Love the lamp posts indoors too. Very playful. A fun space to live in. Congratulations!

i did not know 2 designers can earn so much to afford a shophouse. either there are special support, or they have special talents that struggling folks like me failed to learn after nearly 3 decades. would appreciate any insights on how to own a shophouse that does not involve MLM or OF. thank you.

It's a neat conversion. I love the hidden kitchen and the guest powder room, but I would have gone for colour and am not convinced by the netting. I don't see it as a long term feature.

The central stairwell is such a unique feature that adds natural light to the lower floors, although it's unfortunate that the ground level dining space doesn't seem to benefit from it. I would also love to see how the skylight brings in natural light to the kitchen with the artificial lights off. It's always great to see how it looks when describing the space. The loft netting idea is great, and I can see it being used as a reflective space too. However, the view above doesn't seem allow for that, which could have been a fantastic feature.
In the living room, it's kind of odd for the living room sofa to face the stairs, and the TV doesn't seem to integrate well into the space. Instead of viewing the heritage and ornamentations in a utilitarian and visual approach, what is the designer’s own interpretation of heritage and how that quality be interrogated and communicated in a more phenomenological, somatic and semiotic way? Overall, I think the design is impressive! :)

I think in general the owners seems to like darker spaces as seen in other rooms. Yes the dining room is very dark indeed. Personally I used to live in a heritage building, no matter what you do, the TV just doesn’t work for such spaces. Really big black ugly thing

Love the pink and green on the outside. I don’t understand why the tv is where it is. Put the tv under the stairs where the white credenza is and just move the sofa over.

Very Nice cosy place. I like the unconventional way by having no tv console. BTW where to get a TV stand like this. What is the brand of your TV ? I am moving house soon and would love a TV and TV stand like yours. Hope you will reply to my question. Thanks 💜✌

That TV stand makes me so uncomfortable. It wouldn't survive one week with my children. They would trip over the legs and then the TV would fall over and squash them. Then I would have one less kid and no TV.

If there's a pond inside, it means that the house originally had an inner open courtyard. Too bad they didn't restore it. And as an acrophobic person, nothing in this world could convince me to sit on that net! But a beautiful house nonetheless

Way too modern, stripped back, and minimal. It doesn't compliment the old charming architecture of the shophouse. A transitional design between modern and traditional would have compliment the traditional architecture of the shophouse better.
