@kennithherrick For State Board, it is Ok to spray with water, since at state board of California we do not shampoo the hair first and the hair might be dry, but for real perm we always start with clean, shampooed hair. There are no restrictions wether to spray or not to spray. It is your teacher's preference. If in doubt, check your state's performance criteria to find out if spraying is restricted.
THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! I just passed my CA State Board exam ! Woot Woot ! Your video was AMAZING ! To anyone out there - This is one of the BEST video to watch ( over and over ) and practice at the same time ! It was perfect !!!! To anyone outhere ! YES ! you CAN DO IT ! Best, Liberty.
Congratulations, Liberty! I wish you to be very successful and from your attitude, it is obvious that you would because beauty business is not only having good skills: positive attitude is a must! Thanks for your kind words, too. It's a lot of work to make, edit, polish and maintain those videos; thanks again for your appreciation!
@shakeenbake777 The procedures for state board are; In the order: blow dry styling and thermal curling; haircutting; chemical waving (perm); Virgin hair lightening application and hair color retouch; virgin relaxer and relaxer retouch; (the state board flyer calls for a facial here, but non of my students have gotten it so far); manicure; sculptured nail; Hair removal of the eyebrows (tweeze and wax each eyebrow). All is done on a doll head and an artificial hand with fake nails attached.
@itskathleeen Yes, you don't shampoo any more, and the other difference is that you can do 5 sections if you want or nine, but learning the 9 sections is great for real life procedures. Also, you need to do the entire back middle section, instead of the previous 6. The examiner would tell you when to apply the product and she might watch each applicant. All in all, the examiners tells almost everything that is needed to be done, but, you must know the steps, just in case.
@TheDleiker Gloves protect your hands while rinsing the chemical, so it would be better to keep it on; state board would not remove points for extra protection. You just need to check the water temperature on the skin of your wrist before rinsing the client's hair; simply elevate your glove and check the water temperature. It needs to be warm, but not hot.
@MuriePANIC You don't have to section for 9 anymore. You can section any way you want, as long as the hair is controlled, and the back section, that you have to work on, is sectioned based on the width of the perm rod.
Perm dries the hair and the scalp, and if you dandruff is caused my the dry scalp, then yes, it will. The cause of the dandruff could also be the salt content in inexpensive shampoos that are thick in consistency, since salt is used as a thickener; that is a major cause of dandruff, so try to change your shampoo; also massage your scalp with a soft brush (you can do it while watching TV) to stimulate natural oil production that will lubricate your scalp. Hope this helps.
@prstSTD In California, we rinse the perm solution before applying the neutralizer. If you are in VA, you need to check your state's performance criteria for the right procedure, although, for safety, it is important to rinse the chemical from the hair, to apply the neutralizer; solution is alkaline, neutralizer is acid; one counteracts the other. If left on the hair, the solution would harm the scalp and dry the hair, and the neutralizer would not stabilize the hair very well.
@explicittrell and rosylean89 are correct. The cotton should be placed after the rods are wrapped. I also teach that way; it could have been a mistake with the thumbnails during the editing process of the video, but, by the adsense contract, I cannot make changes to the video. Either way, as long as you use the protection on the client any time before the lotion is applied, you will still gain your points for each step. Thanks for mentioning it, though.
your videos are so helpful for students, thankyou so much for making these videos, I graduate in two days from cosmo school and i've been watching your videos to prepare myself for state board. They are such a big help!! Thanx again!!
Thank you for all your hard work making these videos. I am a cosmetologist whose license lapsed and I have to retake the test in Arizona. I have been studying all your theory and test exam vids. I really thank you.
@sunnyfernandez I have a haircut and acrylic demo; just search through my videos, or in the COSMETOLOGY; STATE BOARD DEMOS playlist. The only change for the perm is that now they want the entire middle section of the back permed, not 6 rods; all the instruction is verbal, so, please follow the examiner's instructions. Feel free to ask any questions. Good luck!
@Ex0tiCbutk0tic The way they test at state board has been changed; all instructions are verbal, so the instructor will let you know when she will test. It is all new, but they have a webcast at the state board channel telling all about the new test.
@fancydelancey1 I am not sure about the barber exam requirements; please check the performance manuel for barbers or ask your instructor. This is good for cosmetologists.
@luvNique4ever The same SMA could be used as long as it is not soiled. I would suggest to change it after the haircut, since some hair will definitely fall on the SMA. In fact, with the new test, you can even have a towel alone, without the SMA. Some teachers suggest to change it all the time: just in case, but, if you forget to change it, and it is still clean, you are perfectly OK. Use a new set up for nails and facials, just in case, although the doll head does not mind at all. Hope it helps.
The result is permanent on the parts of the hair that has been permed, so as long as that hair is on your head; until you cut it or straighten it chemically.
@DesignerzOnly Yes, it was. Now the state board does not ask us to neutralize, so it is a bit easier. But, now, this is the only part of the test that has this many steps for a procedure for hair; that, and the manicure; all others are super easy.
You can put 6 rods on top part of the back of the head. Some teachers ask you to do the entire middle back section, but the state board instructions do not indicate that. Our students passed the exam by doing the just 6 rods on the back below the crown. I hope this helps!
@DesignerzOnly You welcome! Don't be discouraged, since it is a lot easier to pass the board exam. This video will help you : COSMETOLOGY STATE BOARD EXAM PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS AND KIT DEMO It explains the order of the procedures. Also, check the state board website, they have more info, and the kit companies will give you free training, if you rent their kit; all the kit companies.
@klisovski I am sorry to hear that you failed your test due to no tension of the rods. To achieve tension (if the rods are too loose) is to move the robber bank forward a little, but make sure it s still on a straight line on the rod.
It all depends on the size of the perm rod; if you really need a perm, use the largest perm rod that they have; like orange or purple. DO NOT USE blue, pink, gray and white for very long hair.
Thank you @mrchrmedone for the complement. To answer you question: I am not black nor latin. My English is a combination of languages that I have learned as a child, and it has evolved to the current accent.
@MuriePANIC Section any way you want, as long as you have the middle section of the back of the head sectioned from the top to the nape sectioned as wide as the perm rod.
@prstSTD You are right; different states have different requirements. Yes, a lot of subscribers are requesting a chemical relaxer video; I am planning to make a chemical relaxer video in September.
@Maritz86 Sorry, I don't have relaxer, wax/tweeze and makeup, yet, but, they are relatively easy procedures for state board. The facial with oily skin is done in this manner: cleanse, eye pads, blue light, massage, toner. I hope this helps; meanwhile I will try to add those videos, but, it is summer vacation, and I need time to record, edit, publish and post. Thanks for your kind commends!
is this procedure the same for barbers at the state board?.are the perm rods rolled in any paricular direction.ive been told 3 forward and 3 back,is that right?.so,this video is exactly what you do at the sate board.move for move?.im a barber instructor at marinello beauty academy.im new at the job and trying to learn all of this stuff.
Thank you so much for your effort in doing all these video. I reside in California and as of Oct 2011, the practical exam had been changed. Could u please update the process according to stateboard new requirements and changes? Thank you very very much in advance.
I love all your videos and are very helpful, Im very nervous about the manicure and the sculpured nail, can you please make a tutorial on how to prep the fake hand for the state board exam? my test day is on april 17
braiding creates tension to the scalp; some say it helps to grow hair, but there is no scientific proof of any kind. Hair grows 1/2 inch a month, and maybe a little faster in the summer than winter, but that is it. Sorry to ruin your expectations, but, if there's anything new, please let me know, I would appreciate any talk pertaining hair and hair growth.
Hi I love your videos very informative ..im going take the california stateboard feb 28 can you tell me if they are looking for the first application only and are they looking for a strand test for the virgin relaxer?and can you do a video on the proper produre for strandtesting and for waxing are they looking for the use of baby powder before waxing?
@kr8zkat Yes, I am in process of making more videos for new state board requirements. I already made the COSMETOLOGY; BLOW DRY STYLING DEMO for State Board, and COSMETOLOGY; CURLIN IRON PROCEDURE FOR STATE BOARD videos.
These are becoming outdated. In Az we don't need mock neutralizer. and the parting was way to long. We are short timed here. No one has that much time.
this is so helpful i have my date the 22 of nov, you should do a demo for the haircut that would help a lot also and maybe acrylics demo lol...this is awesome tho thank you for taking your time to do this.
im getting a perm on monday, i have long wavy hair thats leading more towards straight because my hair is super thick. will my hair look like a poodle?
when pouring the perm/cold wave in the hair there is a big possibility that it will contact with scalp and skin will it irritate the skin/scalp? i'm planning to have my hair perm.
All the top schools of all colors watch you as your doing each prep as they do there's I went to two different schools. If I did it like that I wouldn't pass
You need to write the date, product used and the result, which will be great at state board. Product will be ammonium thioglycolate or cold wave perm lotion
In state board examination, they require use the real perming solution? We just use water for it. So , all the applicant is provided one shampoo bowl to rinse the hair in the state board ?
Wait! You didn’t specify the time of each application! What time do you apply the solution? Is it after all the hair are rolled to apply the solution then wait 10 to 15 minutes to wash hair? I see you add neutralizer, how long you keep the neutralizer on the hair before rinsing? Is it 5 to 10 minutes? Thank you!
Roll the hair with perm rods, add solution, cover with plastic bag, wait for 10-15 minutes or process according to the manufacturer's instructions, do a strand test to see if the curl is formed, rinse the hair (rinse only, no shampoo), towel blot the hair with rods, apply the neutralizer for 5 minutes, remove the rods, apply some more neutralizer and wait another 5 minutes, then rinse again: rinse only, no shampoo. I hope this helps.
I am going to Perm my hair at home but I don't know what type to get. I also want to use the Air Neutralizer method. Can I use a acid perm with the Air Neutralizer method or does it have to be a alkaline perm? My hair is past my boobs by about 3 inches and its thick, I bleached and hennaed it 15 months ago and it is moderately dry. I am going to do a spiral perm with Flexi Rods. Please help I need to know what perm solutions to use and if I can do the Air Neutralizer method as well, and how many boxes do I need? Thank you
No, everything is online for free. You write the date, the hair condition (normal) the result (good or great). Please don't write that the hair burned and the client wants her money back; it sounds funny, and one guy did it a long while ago, but, please, they don't want it THAT realistic.
how are you going to do a perm with no rods or neutralizer? how would you get curls or re bond the bonds of the hair so the hairstyle stays, I find that extremely odd..@SkyHighBeautyxx xoxo

rosyleon89........ I was thinking the same thing! You do place the cotton on after the rods are placed
How to do big curls perm hairs
Use bigger perm rods for big curls: the orange or purple ones.
You welcome! I am glad you were able to watch it!
Could you please also tell me what procedures i may have now at stateboard my test is next week
what do we write onto the client card? sorry, from out of state and studying for cali exam. do you teach any classes in person?

@sunnyfernandez GREAT! CONGRATULATIONS on passing state board.
Are u demonstrating California State Board procedures?
Yes, California State Board procedures, but you don't have to be precise on your sectioning anymore.
Perfect explain!!!
I'm testing on the 12th I'm so nervous! But your videos are perfect for cram study sessions :)
this is awesome. I am learning soo much
If I go to get a perm, can I straighten my hair from time to time with iron during the perm period?
Sure. But when your hair gets wet, it will revert to its curly form.
how are you going to do a perm with no rods or neutralizer? how would you get curls or re bond the bonds of the hair so the hairstyle stays, I find that extremely odd..@SkyHighBeautyxx xoxo
Oh, I completely agree with you; it is just that this video is for preparing to pass the state board exam to get the license and that's how it is done at state board; for the real perm, the procedure is done with real chemicals, not simulated chemicals.
That's how you have to do it for stateboard. It was a stateboard demo.
What brand of protective cream do you use? Can we buy it from Sally?
Oona Allan Yes, even vaseline will work as a protective cream because that's what most hairdressers use.
Thank you, and thank you for this video!
do the paper used for wrapping have a specific name? need answer please.
End papers. They're made of onionskin paper. In the early 1940s, when cold perms (as opposed to perms where you were wired to a machine that heated the chemicals into steam), end papers were made of Cellophane (a new state-of-the-art product back then).
This video is great, I am also feeling so confident now ….Thanks Thanks Thanks
