- Jewellery specialist, Geoffrey Munn and V&A metals conservator and gemmologist, Joanna Whalley examine and discuss a stunning 1920s Cartier brooch with an enormous emerald centrepiece of just under 40 carats.
A Remarkable Piece of Jewelry: I imagine the original owner and her glorious wardrobe, tastes and gem infatuation.
Can you imagine the size of her waist? She had to be tiny!
That brooch is now for sale in christie's and has an estimate of 500 to 700 thousand usd.
UPDATE: the brooch is sold for $1,545,000 ( including buyers premium and fees )
That is then the most expensive jewelry I ve ever seen
Damn! I would have bought it, if I knew it was being sold.
@@RioMuc me too 😀
@@ilonakat9379 Oh, you would have made the price soar even more.
Stunning
That is the most beautiful emerald I have ever seen. I never knew they could be so blue.
Are you fucking color blind? It's green, and the dude even *calls* it a green emerald.
Funkenstein
You are blind and rather vulgar. That emerald is a very bluish green. A stormy deep ocean green. Not a typical emerald green that we often see with its namesake stone.
I have a knife with a handle that is very similar in color and some people say it’s blue and some say it’s green.
I love Geoffrey Munn. He is a poet and hes just so in love with all jewels and jewelry its beautiful.
That is very true; and what an affable man!
that would be a great hair clasp, especially for someone with long, black hair. the effect would be stunning.
No one would wear that expensive hair clasp on their head ! Even if they could afford it! Haha
Exactly what i was thinking it's so beautiful it would just pop in dark colors
@@leeyan8722 speak for your self lol I would.
Agreed. Wonder if they would loan it to me to wear?! 😂
Same. And I thought it was a hair ornamentation before they said it was worn on the waist
Im just in awed. The inclusions on natural emeralds are called Jardins. French for gardens. On natural emeralds its expected. Extremely rare to find flawless emeralds in nature without "jardins". One can always tell from lab to nature made emeralds. Lab created emeralds are flawless almost green glass like and no Jardins. But chemically they are both the same both natural and lab created. Except in nature and during the hard conditions nature is unable to filter out the jardins. Me personally i love the glow of natural emeralds and love the perfection of lab created emeralds. I can do without the jardins. Hey but some like that lol. As far as the brooch it's stunning a true work of art. Collecting those sapphires alone shows the dedication and commitment to getting all the stones to be of the same color. The attention to detail and craftsmanship exceptional and terrific :) Viva the jewelery house of Cartier :)
Carlos Barahona thank you for such detailed information, very much appreciated!!
I have an emerald ring that I inherited from my grandmother, and while it's very good quality there are some jardins in it, and I simply adore them. They make the light play in such a lovely way.
Thanks for this information.
That center stone is astonishing. Modern mines and gemcutters would have reduced that stone into fragments with possibly a 5 carat centerpiece. The inclusions are beautiful, because you can see the stone was a real mineral out of the earth.
that's because today it's all about the money, not the beauty, etc.
@@vima8680 ...I agree, I especially like the flaws imperfection means you have the real deal especially when you are speaking about emeralds.
@@gloriahanes6490 I like flawless gems more. Natural ones are nice, but I think lab grown are just as good. In most cases, people would prefer flawless gems, I think. Emerald just happens to be one of the ones where it's extremely rare to find a flawless one.
That's because, the original stone was carved in India by indian artists. Then, later set into that brooch.
There are no words for how mesmerizing this piece is for me.
I dont care much for jewelry, but that is an amazing piece. Both breathtaking in its design and brilliance.
the most beautiful emerald i have ever seen. the cut is so nice
I love when gem stones have some veins and inclusions makes them perfectly imperfect
Agreed. They have character, which is what we should all want to be showing off.
rosewatersaffron I completely agree with your comment and the reply by Hypatia4242. I told my husband, when he asked for ideas for rings, I told him vintage art deco style, old school, something one-of-a-kind, no diamonds or very little diamonds, perfectly imperfect (since I dont tend to notice basic clarity anyway) and something that peaked his interest and reminded him of me and I wound up getting this vintage art deco, 1950s ring with a handset brownish jade cloud colored emerald with Caribbean ocean colored triangled sapphires on each side set in a gold that was slightly tarished brass colored and filigree along the sides. I was more stunned by the ring than the proposal. It was so... I'm perfectly imperfect and the cutest part was how he said the emerald reminded him of my eyes which they are hazel with brown along the edges hehehe
Your comment told a lot about you. I think you have great personality and caracter.
Agreed!
Very well said Honey
Magnificent piece. The Emerald is beautiful. What a creation.
It pisses me off, when the history of such a amazing and unique work of art, isn't mentioned!!
It came out of the ground. You’re welcome.
I wonder if Cartier aquired the Emerald from the Bolshevik sales of broken up Romanov jewels.
Wonderful Cartier Brooch, it would have been nice to see the signature if there is one
And a close up on the box... thank you
That's an emerald which is probably nearly irreplaceable these days. I want to correct the gentleman about the piercings. A small hole is drilled into the area to be pierced, a jewelers saw blade is inserted and the blade is tightened up in the frame. The piercing commences, and then, possibly, some touch up with a file. These piercings are not done with a file alone.
Unfortunatly a lot of these so called experts, are like teachers, who are just a page ahead of the student.
This would look lovely pinned onto your shoulder with a black velvet gown
Absolutely glorious
I could only imagine the amount of security that were behind the camera and all around the room while recording this video
Old mined emeralds are far superior to modern ones.
That’s why prefer older pieces.
Love those rectangular Cabochons so much.
It’s just glorious. 😍😍😍
Really beautiful piece...
'Limpid' is right. Somehow, the emerald reminds me of my grandparents listening to Pink Floyd's 'Ummagumma'. Both come close to inducing a trance-like state.
Stunning
Beautiful work of art🔷✏📏📐🙉
Beautiful! I can’t imagine wearing it around your waist. I would surely lose it.
Stunning!
I’d dress in drag just so I could wear it!
I bet you would, Mary!!
Who owned this exquisite piece ? Does anyone know?
If that belt buckle was to stand out against her outfit how thin did her waist have to be to be able to show it?
Wow, so beautiful.
It's gorgeous! Why don't people wear brooches any longer!?
Beautiful
fantastic .......
It’s lovely! I’d love to have a copy out of less precious matterials
So how much is it worth?
I wish the style of this time was still popular. Imagine someone walking around wear fine jewelry like this
Would you walk around with something 1.5 million dollars pinned to your shirt or hair? My faith and trust in my fellow man is obviously much less than yours. Lol.
It's actually not for everyday wear. I agree though people should be fine with adornment such as more often. Just as well most would look at someone sporting something like this as if it was costume jewelry.
So beautiful
It would have enhanced the presentation had the curator given a value.
Very very beautiful
Jewellery case made by a case maker , never a box .
Tiffany's famous blue box
It's a case , made by a case maker , not a box maker !
I wanted to look at the emerald up close😭
Beautiful 💕
That Emerald could have been from the Bolshevik sales
Did they say the value?
Beautiful thing, love Geoffrey, but frustratingly average camera work; what is up with the inability to focus on the right element and eliminate reflection etc? Everyone's a photographer now and yet nobody is. Learn the basics, people.
Beauteous
wtf....how much?
I hate to see pieces like this sold at auction...it. Belongs inside museum where everyone can see it.
wonder if a TV appraiser says, "worth 20k", lol
i would like to see some undercover show where they go to some cash for jewelry type place and offer pieces like this to see how much they would pay
wow
Value of the brooch?
It was mentioned above sold for more than indicated at $1,545,000 at Christie's.
hooooooooow much was ot worth?he neva said
best i can do is 5$, i'm taking all the risk here
sold for 1,545,000 including both buyers and seller auction fees 10 months ago
I'll give you 5 dollars and an autographed photo of Tony Danza for that brooch, my offer won't stand long.
the emerald is beautiful but the whole piece isn't pleasant to my eyeballs
I thought it was a bracelet.
100k to 200k usd
lol that wouldn't even pay for the sapphires those are for sure Kashmir valley sapphire's (sugar loaf is just the style of cut) which haven't been mined for over a 110 years and fetches anywhere from 20-30 thousand a carat in its top royal blue colour with top clarity so guess again (5 carats = 1 gram)
Sold at Christie's for $1,545,000.
That emerald must not have a very big back . I have a 25 carat emerald & this one looks huge . or i'm getting used to mine lol ;)
I have an cient emerald sword. 🗡
Why, oh why the idiotic tinkly background music...
WHAT IS THE VALUE!!! Darn! at least!! Don’t waste my time!!
It sold at auction for $1,545,000
Yeah, but it's ugly.
wow its beautiful
How much is it worth ?
