Scrape with an exacto knife blade. It makes a lot less of what you need and it’s easier to change the color.

Whats nice is that each technique give the rust a different flavor (coming from an amateur rust taster). The "just paint" give an indoor rust where its not exposed to elements, but metal has a thin rust. The textured paint is like a rusted hull of something found by the sea. While the powders give a rusty look you'd find the desert. Wonderful stuff.

Yeah, excellent metal decay right there!
I believe that for the toothbrush part of the salt method it works better if the brush is moist. Also worthy of mention is the sponge method, basically the paint method but using a sponge to apply the rusty colors, looks more random and "natural"
Edit: Fixed the overabundance of "sponge", clearly needed more coffee :P

Great ideas, but Here in Australia a company has made it easy to make the pastels into powder, the tool is in a rectangle shape with a piece of mesh that is in the middle and you rub the pastel on the mesh and you get a lovely powder weathering powder and you use a bonding medium and you got your rust or earth, and build up snow and ice. cheers.

Very nifty tutorial good sir, two for the price of one! I have heard about all five methods you covered, but never had considered combining them on the same piece...😱
I have seen many creators that applied the rust as a base, then the "old" paint on top with the rust showing through. I had always thought that it would look better to have the piece painted first then apply the rust, such as with the textured paint method on top. I guess it is all subjective and down to the user's skill/ability. I will have to experiment with these and see which method I can do better for a better result.
Thanks very much for the info as well as the entertainment. Great stuff, thanks for sharing, and keep on keeping on!!

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm (/ˈælɡərɪðəm/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a finite sequence of well-defined instructions, typically used to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation.[1] Algorithms are used as specifications for performing calculations and data processing. By making use of Artificial Intelligence, algorithms can perform automated deductions (referred to as automated reasoning) and use mathematical and logical tests to divert the code through various routes (referred to as automated decision-making). Using human characteristics as descriptors of machines in metaphorical ways was already practiced by Alan Turing with terms such as "memory", "search" and "stimulus".[2], bill.
