  • Have some problems with the truck, trying to troubleshoot it. Feel stuck at the moment. I am sure many will have some ford chevy comments but to be fair this truck is getting to that age. Will get over the few setbacks and move on. :)

You can get a low cost code reader that's blue tooth for 40 bucks.
I would guess it the ford module engine that blew a spark plug threads coil out.

Really the biggest problem is you’re not driving a dodge. I’m just kidding. We know they’ve all got their own quirks and problems. Hopefully this will be it and your truck will be sorted out for awhile after this. I know from experience working on vehicles in the cold sucks.

We have a 2005 F150, 5.4l that had the exact same problem. It's likely sparkplug/injector issue; take it to Ford, they have the right tools! Guaranteed you will break a plug! Need an extractor kit. I am a Ford guy but HATE the Triton engine!!!!! Good luck. I took my truck to Ford, she runs like a dream now.

But I think your right; have Ford change out all the plugs and use the anti-seaze.

Plugs and coilovers isn't a cheap job on that truck. Could be $1000 pretty easily. Good thing is it only needs done every 100k miles. What I've seen on these is to use penetrating oil and then an impact once it's hot. That said, I'd be nervous to do it myself. Those 5.4s are great motors, but plugs is their big failing. Bite the bullet and do them all at once, at the dealership or a local shop.

  • @brianmiller4282

Most likely your coils, had the same problem with a shutter when driving 40-50 mph at low rpms, that is when the coils work the hardest. I love my fords but the coil over plugs have always been an issue

  • @brianmiller4282

I have a friend who is a mechanic at Ford and he changed all my plugs and coils for me, he does the scheduling and pricing at a Ford dealership and said he just quoted replacing plugs and coils and price was $1600 for labor and parts, I bought the plugs and coil packs off internet for $100 and took him and his wife out for dinner, so I got a good deal, I hope you don’t have to go the dealer route because it is super expensive, good luck

  • @TheFordmudtrucks

Great video. You do not want to break that plug off. If you can't get it I would take it to the dealership or trusted mechanic. I would recommend having all the plugs replaced and then start saving money to buy all the coils within the next year or so. I got a 2003 5.4 that I want up replacing them one at a time which I should I replace them all at the same time and save myself some time.
I would also look into the lockout cam phasers. The 5.4 3 valve is notorious for having the cam phaser go bad and destroying the motor. I just talked to a friend yesterday that is putting his second motor in his 2004 f150. Hope this helps and have a great day

not sure if your able to but time to trade it in. the 5.4 3v is not a good motor, lots of issues. every manufacture has its issues but the timing chain, cam phasers, 2 piece plug design and the carbon build up between the tight tolerance of the plug in the head = money and headache. most of the time the plug will come apart in 2 pieces. the threaded part will come out but the tip stays in the head and that's what has to be drilled out. ive heard and tried many different ways to get them out from spraying water in the intake to create kind of a steam to try and break up the carbon, hot engine , cold engine, pb blaster, kroil, etc. ive had more luck with a 3/8 impact and hot engine than anything but there is no for sure way. id say try ur luck, if its gonna break its gonna break. good luck

Yeah not a good design with threads narrow and deep. Well if someone is going to have the answer it would be this person channel. ua-cam.com/users/FordTechMakuloco Hope it helps. I'm pretty sure he has gone over this issue. My book says this is not emission related as many would say, "rush to meet emissions" , something to be said about completion and also to be said about taking the time to do it right. We are so competitive today that we are unable as a Human race to sit down and actually make it right and long lasting. Just imagine the possibilities if we all sat down and worked together. We are all so busy doing a one up and in the end net loss. We need a new program and trust me I know it is not coming anytime soon.

Hey Eric, sorry to hear about the truck troubles. Wow, I think I was at that same parts store the day before exchanging a battery. I had my 5.4 Triton spit out a spark plug on a road trip a few years ago and I was darn lucky to be able to get that spark plug to thread back in working with what I had with me along side the road. Usually working on your vehicle along the road or in a parking lot never goes good. I think you should maybe have the dealership do the job as much as I know you'd like to do it yourself. At least you tried, it's usually what I do first also.

Best of luck to you. I ran my '03 f150 up to 347k miles before I traded it In on a new one. At 20k it blew a spark plug out of the head and Ford replaced that head under warranty. After that it was all on me. I carried the extractor tool and the inserts, but never had to use them.
But I did have to replace my fair share of coil packs. I got real good at replacing them too. As soon as I would feel the miss I would find an auto parts store with a scanner and figure out what cylinder was missing. I kept a spare coil and an 8mm wrench in the glove box and in less than a half hour I was back on the road. Then I would go back in the auto part store and get a coil pack to replace the one in my glove box. I've had 3 other f150s since the only problem I have with them now is the price.

Eric I have a 2002 f-150 with the same issue you are having. Here is my disclaimer 😀 I am not a sissy kind of gal but actually am a trained by Uncle Sam aircraft mechanic which I did for 10 years. So I’m not speaking out of ignorance. On the assembly line a human did not put those plugs in so you will probably not be able to take them out like we used to do. My recommendation is to bite the bullet and take it in and have them remove ALL the plugs and replace them by HAND. If they will just remove them and let you replace them, do that. Changing only one means you will be doing this over and over. After one going out on me I changed all the plugs and coils together so I’d not be dilly dallying with them all one at a time. PS Let me end with “I love my Ford” and I believe in preventive maintenance. I’ll say a prayer on keeping the cost down. I have full faith in you getting this done.

I feel your pain! My 2004 Chevy Blazer suddenly lost power on the way back home from town going down the interstate. I managed to get it home and was able to plug in my code checker which said it was the Mass Air-flow sensor. Got some MAF cleaner but that didn't help, so replaced the unit. That got rid of the MAF code but the engine still didn't have any power & the service engine soon light was on. Ended up bitting the bullet & took it into the local mech. & had him check it out. $501.00 later it runs fine. Turns out the CAT converter had failed/became plugged & needed to be replaced. There went the tax refund check, ouch! :-(

I'm seeing this a bit late, but wondered whether a longer cheater bar would help you with that? I can certainly understand where you don't want to break it off though, but sometimes just a quick pull with a bar that has more leverage might help.(bike mechanic here) Although many might disagree with this, I'll pass along something that a local mechanic shared with me. He is the head mechanic of an oil delivery.repair companies vans... so he has seen all models of vehicles and his suggestion to me was " stay away from Ford." I know that there might be lots of other folks that disagree with that, but you can take it for what its worth. I hope that by now you have everything resolved! Thanks for sharing!

I found that on that model/engine when one goes it is just best to replace all of the plugs, coils, wires. This occurs on the newer 3.5L Ecoboost as well, but you can get the plugs out. That engine with the turbos puts out a LOT of heat and ends up cooking the coils/wires.

DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE SPARK PLUG!!!!! There are a lot of shops that refuse to do sparkplugs on that engine. Take it to the dealership and pay the big $$. They will probably make you sign an agreement up to $1000 flate rate to remove broken plugs. Also, was the coil boot wet when you removed it? Your original problem is probably a leaking intake manifold at the thermostat. Very common problem on the 5.4 3v.

@@LifeinFarmland Yeh when I read about the problems with the Triton engines, mostly the smaller one I made sure I got the bigger 5.4L and made sure the dealer already did the plug and coils before I handed over my cash. Now mine has the infamouse passenger side oil leak but I have it on the market now anyway so I am not going to bother replaceing the head gasket. My advice to you. if you can get rid of it. I'm not familiar with US trucks as we don't get many of them down here in New Zealand, but something that works on Australian Fords with aluminium heads is to spray WD40 or equivalent around each plug so the plugs are sitting in a bath of the stuff. As the fluid evaporates or penetrates keep topping the fluid up. When you top up try working the plug back and forth gently with the plug spanner. Eventually the plugs undo a bit at a time. It's always worked for me but first time it took a week to get all the plugs out. Good luck.

I have a handy $5 inline spark tester from Harbor Freight that saved me a ton of headache. It has a sight glass with a light bulb to verify electricity passing through. One end plugs inside the coil then the other end goes on the spark plug, just to test if you have spark to that plug. If that spark plug isnt the issue, you could save the entire can of worms.
Good luck brother, you've got this!
