About Life In Farmland: Our family strives to be as self-sufficient as we can be. We grow a lot of food in the garden, raise or hunt for our meat, cut and use firewood to heat our house in the cold Minnesota winters. We want to know where our food comes from, what goes into it. We strive to live a slower and sustainable lifestyle with family being our first priority. On this channel, you will find a lot of how-tos, shared experiences, recipes, and videos of things we are trying and learning more about.
Thanks for sharing Eric. I’d be embarrassed to put our junk room on camera haha. Good for you for embracing it and doing something about it!
Got a chuckle from your comment “...back when MTV played music.”
Welcome to the club 😂👍
That's why it's called spring cleaning...and that was resale gold
Thanks Eric for the inspiration to clean my place up. We've been trying to do the same thing. My big project is my garage which is the catch all place for everything. I want my garage back! Lol
I'm presently going thru all my things and having to separate things, as what to sell, give away, and hand down. But, since a thief stole most every collectable thing from me, what I have left has more meaning to me. And hard to let go.
G-D Bless.
Thanks - getting started - holding on to things for the ''right day'' really creeps up on us. For me it was a move from arid SoCA to smaller home in green Ozarks that forced me to give away some things tied to my heart strings [all my Montessori books & equipment]. A less cluttered life in my 80's .... never too late to slim things down. As you say, our heirs will have to sort through our clutter-itiss.
With as much time you spend between work, managing your firewood, gardening, home chores, and family, it’s amazing that you have any time at all left for other hobbies. Are your days longer? 😂
I’m assuming you meant to write “learned” in the title?
It's hard being minimalist and having a small homestead. I'd say 25% of what we own are consumables. Another good resource is Joshua Becker's book "The Less of More." He also has a you tube channel. It's definitely contagious...in a good way. Good job, I'm sure you're feeling a sense of accomplishment....taking back your avoided, unused space.
I really appreciate you sharing this. I had not heard of Joshua Becker's or his book before. Just went over and subbed. Another great resource as we explore. Thank you!
Great video! My golden rule is to get something new, you have to get rid of something old, raising 4 kids, that has worked well for us. I have also been watching videos on swedish death cleaning, learning a new way of departing with stuff were not using and just taking up space.
I had not heard of swedish death cleaning. Quick google search and some of my questions are answered. Thank you for sharing!
My husband and I are still dealing with his parents estate...a/k/a stuff....60+ years worth. It has been quite a burden. This has motivated us to purge and organize so as not to do it to our children.
I had a magazine collection like that with motocross mags.. sooo tough in letting go on stuff like that for some reason. What a great weekend to get started on that project. Thanks for sharing!
I'm slowly getting my mindset onto thinking minimalism, wishing I'd heard of it 20 yrs ago, but it was nice to hear you talk through reasonings and observations in the video. Seemed like a 70s style feel video in some of it, watched it all, thanks.
Good job Eric with getting rid of some of the clutter. I need to do some of this myself. You're kinda like me with all the guitar magazines. You keeping the drum set? You should and for sure the guitars.
Use the Blue Dot System. It works IF you are a hard-ass about following it.
I also see some stuff that would bring surprisingly big bucks on eBay. You might as well hand Goodwill cash, because that is what you are doing.
Drums? DRUMS! Are you kidding me? DRUMSDRUMSDRUMS!!! I had no idea. You are full of surprises!
Far from hoarder!! Although, as I move on in years....as I've cleaned multiple homes from people who've moved on (the BIG move-on), I do find myself thinking, "is this something I want my family to have to deal with?" Admittedly, the clothes I've held on to for 10 years now in hopes of being "that" size again....who hasn't been there? And everyone should have a back-up coffee machine (only one, though). We did, though, find a receipt for a utility payment from the 50s in old saved stuff of a relative....I mean, why? What were they thinking?!
Most of those books, you can get more for them from eBay than on Amazon. You do have bills to pay, right? The little junky stuff, sell at a yard sale, for .25-.50.
Good morning . Enjoy your videos and tips and ideas . Thinking of you and your loved ones and still praying for good health . Hang in !!👍
Over the years, through several jobs, I've been awarded "service" pins. All went in the recycle bin as I knew they were something that I would not treasure. Marie's advice that your stuff should be useful or bring joy works for me. I've told my kids to take my photo albums, yearbooks, etc and have a bonfire (with a beverage of choice).
Eric you have the nicest commenters and I just love reading what they say! I’m sure this video was made just for me because I caught myself more than once saying “lalala I’m not hearing you” !😂 It was like hearing that little voice on my shoulder for the upteenth time while I say “stop pushing me” lol Thanks for the end pep talk though cause I’m closer than I thought! Great video as always!!
Looks Great! We're baby stepping our way out of the clutter also. 23 years in our home & raising 2 children means there is a lot to go through. Motivation is big problem unless you keep the end result in the front of your mind. Kudos!!
It’s funny how getting rid of stuff is so much more satisfying than getting new stuff. Great video.
I like the wood grain strat. I may have kept the drums tho. :) But clearing out is good.
The other major takeaway from this process it to remember when you are about to pull the trigger on a purchase, remember getting rid of all that stuff and ask yourself, "do I really need to buy this?"
Hmmm, I don't think I should put my old magazine collection on camera if you know what I mean!
lol
We moved to a smaller home, I went through my old martial arts magazines, collected since I was 14. Hard to let go of the items as they have a memory I didn’t want to deal with them. I have to remember tastes and likes change as we age... I am evolving as I homestead more..so I need room for the new things versus keeping the old... great video to share.
OK why did I have no idea you loved guitars and music? Have you ever shared your Guitars with us? If not now is a great time as the winter closes in!
Nice gear ! I've played for a few decades. Love to hear some.
I think many people have a room like this in their house including me. I've cleaned it a few times but nature abhors a vacuum and then new things end up being stored in that room. My new rule is that if I can't remember where something is or even if I still have it , it's time to do an inventory and get rid of stuff in closets that I haven't touched in years.
I think that we all collect to much stuff that we intend on doing something with but never have the time to do.
Hi. I miss your videos!
Do you still play music?
good for you guys!!
❤👍
47?
It's called the " Sliding Squares " game. In order to use one thing, many others have to be slid over, stacked up and put back. Much extra work.
Have been enjoying your video's Eric and best wisher's to you and your family from Frank and Nanette Hopper from Australia and well done in the way you video's bye for now
Thank you for taking on this challenge. I feel "decluttering"is the newest "buzz word"; right up there with "minimalism". Don't allow this process to stress you out. It's okay to have "stuff" and attach our memories to that stuff.
Nothing to be embarrassed about, Eric. You were kind in your word usage 'collectors'. Thank you for this. I just started working on a room that seems to 'collect' everything I do not know what to do with. Your video is very timely for me, and I am sure, others. Lots of us need a jump start, and your insight and remarks are very helpful in giving that gentle nudge! I wish you a blessed and happy summer!
"Clean your room"
The clutter of mans world distracts us from having conversations with logos.
En arche en ho logos...!
My mom was a for real hoarder. Growing up in a hoard makes it easier to start "collecting" myself. I have to have a purge on a regular basis, just to keep my life more sane. I appreciate your video. It is something we all have to do from time to time.
Eric, great job, this has got the cleaning bug into us, we are trying to do the same thing. Thanks for the inspiration! See ya on the next one, thanks for sharing
great video and explaining the process of self love , very well done as a family :)
Thats what happens in our basement stuff just goes there to be forgotten.
great show...thanks for the inspiration
We are about to move so this is a great help!!
I think a lot of people have the spring cleaning bug right now. I decluttered all of my tools this weekend and then my best friend came over and we disassembled a 2.5 ft. Mini half pipe that I built in the basement for the kids and then rebuilt it for his kids.
I am sure Heather will want to take over the space and grow stuff year round. Originally it was supposed to be a man cave with a U of M Gopher theme.
lol, love it!
make sure you sell what you can, $50 for a nintindo with original manual
That Nintendo isn't going anywhere! I still play it!
