This is the only video I could find discussing the benefits/losses from practicing while drinking. I juggle, do stand up, and speedrun games. This is an interesting subject to broader hobbies, for sure.

Though, now that I've finished the video, you never really talked about practicing while drinking...

My personally philosophy on inebriation and music, is that it can be useful to help you overthink less, but the gap in which that happens before you lose facility is so small that it's super easy to overdo it. Realistically you should find a way to stop overthinking while sober, so that you'll be able to perform at your best without any outside influences.

Well, I agree with you. If you're playing with friends or alone, it's totally up to you to drink and play. But once you have to play in front of an audience or be productive (recording, serious rehearsal) it's definitely better not to drink at all, or if you are "used" to drinking, as little as possible and hours before playing (just like driving I'd say).
One guitar player told me "those who drink before going on stage are afraid of themselves". So unless you're a Rolling Stone or Lemmy... Not gonna help at all.
It might remove stress, but honestly, you won't play as well as when sober. (I've had a bad experience in my first gig, the concert was delayed for two hours without notice, and some in the band started drinking beer after beer, purely out of boredom; the drummer lost his sticks and was off-tempo at times).

Yep, total agreement, that's how I see it too. By no means was it my intention to tell people what to do and not to do. This is everybody's personal decision, and I do know musicians who actually do better when they reach a certain 'level' of 'intoxication'. But generally speaking, I believe that as a musician you do better playing sober - that is especially true if - like you pointed out - playing in front of an audience.

I agree with you 100%. I would say though that if I'm playing with close friends or family, then performance is not an issue, but I would advise to drink responsibly. ;-)

I think alcohol can be condusive to practice but not necessarily to preforming.
