His passing was announced on the social media page of our local gaming convention. I wonder how many GMs will run Gamma World in his honor next President's Weekend (when the Con takes place).
I'd always wished that Gamma World had gotten more traction. A hidden gem that those who've played it, know just how special it is. All of the editions for me had their charm, but I agree that 4th is the better of them. For me it seems that 3e got away from them a bit but still not a bad game by any stretch in my opinion.
I fell in love with this edition when it came out, especially after the 3rd edition mockery. I think in some ways it was a pre-cursor to 3rd Edition D&D, especially with ascending AC. Unfortunately never got to actually play this edition.
I played Gamma World 1st and 2nd editions. I own 3rd edition, never played it. I never got the 4th edition. By the time that came out we were mostly playing Traveller, Space Opera, and Aftermath.
@@CaptCook999 I completely agree that better support would have been a big help. On the other hand, because we had to home brew so much of it, we really ended up being invested in the setting we created. Which is probably why we played in that setting from 1984 to 2002.
I’m really interested in GW, never played but so many good stories about it. Question for ya Tony, did you ever run an actual campaign in GW, calculating XP, leveling up, playing monthly etc? Great video as always.
Not familiar with fourth edition. Good review. Maybe you could have your son run you and your group in a one shot so you could get some play time in for once.
Love Gamma World, all of them.
I agree with you that 4th edition Gamma World was definitive.

R.I.P. Mr. Ward. Thanks for all the fun!
I love Gamma World! It was the 3rd game I bought and played after AD&D and Top Secret. I think the second edition is my favorite, then fourth edition.
This is my favorite version of Gamma World! It also has my favorite piece of Larry Elmore art in his "The Leviathan"
I Still have my 4th edition Gamma world. So sorry to hear of Jim Wards passing. R.I.P

Thank you so much for doing these videos. I know it's hard work and the tubes of you don't exactly make it worth it.
I still just love 1st ed. Simple and so much in what was it 36 pages? Amazing stuff RIP James.
I have the 1st version of Gamma World and it is very light on the art.
Treasure of the ancients and gamma knights were the name of the supplements

I play 4e Gamma World and it is the best Gamma World edition.
I talked to James Ward about 4e, and James told me he did not have any involvement in writing 4e.
I played 1st edition. I own 1st thru 4th and am currently working on a 4th Edition campaign, that I hope to start soon.
well Hobart was an island in the prehistoric sea.

I loved playing Aftermath! I just wish that they had supported it better.

We house ruled armor class going up after seeing this book come out.
The very best TSR version of GW, after the awful 3rd edition. Mutant Epoch, from Outland Arts, is an even better update of "old school" GW.

Yes, a couple of times.
If you can't get a copy of 4th Edition, go for Mutant Epoch from Outland Arts.
You ever play scenarios set around your community?
Almost always. We ventured around the country but most of my games were set around the Chicago area. Same with Champions.
