I remember when I Made It to College! The only scales I knew were C Maj and Bb Maj! It was kinda embarrassing but Now I KNOW & CAN PLAY ALL MY SCALES! Thank God 🙏 🎷 😇
Fyi because in High School I played Tuba and the majority of our Concert Keys barely left C Bb Eb etc...
Yeah, knowing your scales makes EVERYTHING easier when it comes to theory and playing songs. Yeah, as an alto player, I've always been more on the sharp side of the circle of 5ths.

Yes, I always talk in the key that I'm playing in. It's hard enough to say all of the correct notes on camera without having to transpose 😅

Hi - love your channel. Do you find it's easier (especially for rank beginner's like me) to stay in the pentatonic, or should I practice with the entire scale? Thanks.
I have been playing for several years - I would recommend to start off with only a few notes, which is what the pentatonic is. After you feel confident on pentatonic, you could switch to longer scales and such.

Hey Stephen, I start students off with the BLUES SCALE. It is a great starting point because it sounds like a musical idea. It is the same thing as the minor pentatonic scale, except it has the b5 which makes everything sound better. If you are learning from scratch (and you are a sax player) you should take a look at my Sax School. You'll have a clear step by step pathway to learn how to improv.

How do you make the higher notes sound more stereotypical saxophone-like rather than more Clarinet like?
if you’re playing on a classical sax mouthpiece it might be stopping you from getting that sound. play more relaxed and open than classical too, that helps get you a fatter sound
Whats the black thing you use on the F/ key?
That is a palm key riser, it raises the key a little bit so it’s easier/more comfortable to play
What do you mean by swing 8th notes?
The type of 8th notes you hear in jazz where they are not completely equal one is slightly longer than the other to give it a swing feel.
What I do is I play random notes and go up and down octaves and my band teacher says they all sound amazing
