tears in my eyes. This was the song that my wife and i danced to at our wedding in 1972. We married after only knowing each other for 3 months. and after 42 years are still going strong, Thanks for the post and thank you Bread.
Got married Saturday 03-06-2023 and this was our song for the first dance , I have loved Bread since I was knee high , what an honor it is to have played this song in remembrance of my late twin Bruce , who also loves Bread...
My first ever boyfriend and I loved this song...it was the summer of 1972, we were both Soo young, but we made this one "our song". Wherever you are John Ivany, I'll always rem you esp whenever I listen to my best of David Gates and Bread album. ❤️
I am reunited with my first boyfriend after 45 years. Hope we can stay till we died. I love him still the same and a little more. He sent me this song all the time. Love this song.
Every 70s song reminds me of my Tammy, my sweetheart wife whom I lost almost a year ago. This one especially because I used to play it in the car a lot. I miss my wife so much.
Can anyone just imagine if this song was released today ??? It would be triple-platinum in about an hour! We just don't hear singing like this anymore. --------------------WolfSky9
This song takes me back to my youth. I remember those summer days at the house with this song playing on the radio. Everything seemed so simple and care-free.
I definitely agree with you on this one and I reminiscing this song when I was going to see my grandparents farmhouse in Messena , New York during summer vacation and listening to this song in my parents car and seeing my first girlfriend and going to her house with fresh picked wild flowers and giving her them and this song was playing in her house as I was walked up her door and this was in 1978.
Great song! David Gates is a good family man and great guy. Stilled married to his high school sweet heart. He will be 74 in December, 3 of kids are Lawyers and the other son is a Heart Surgeon in Pediatrics and Adult Surgery.
Lived the American dream. Great career, still married to his high school sweetheart , children who became successful. When he sits and reflects on his life he must have a smile ear to ear. What a way to have lived.
Brings back lovely memories of being a child in the 70's...when both my parents were alive, and life was simple...brings tears of times gone by...lovely memories
My Parents danced to this song at their wedding. He sang this to her throughout their life. Ironically My Husband played this song this afternoon. He had no idea I even knew it. What are the odds??Today marks the 2 yr anniversary of his transition into eternal peace. Continue to sleep peacefully Dad♥
Wow this grabs me by the gut and just rips my heart out! What memories are wrapped up in this music! Sweet yet painful memories. I made contact with Jess after 40 years and she told me I was the love of her life and mourned me going for several years. I never knew that! Why didn't she tell me! All those 'what ifs' !!
The NOSTALGIA 💜🥺 I am 21 now but I remember as a little girl going on family road trips to my Grandparent's home 6hrs away and sometimes my sister and I would get restless in the car. My dad would have his old playlist on, songs from the 70s & up and somehow when this song played... we'd all just instantly calm down, there was silence as we just listened as this song took us to another world 😍 just BEAUTIFUL (if only he knew to begin the journey with this song😅)
"Life can be short or long Love can be right or wrong" I wasn't born on the 70's but age isn't a necessary requirement to know what good music is. Learned about oldies but goodies music when as a kid, FM radio stations would play only old songs on Sundays and yup, Bread was among my favorites :)

The year this song came out, I just returned into the arms of my young bride after 1 year away in SE Asia. So it had a special meaning for us. Songs like this will help form a person's personality and soul. If you are young and not listening to heartfelt and soulful music, you are missing out on a sweet part of life. There is a shortage of meaningful music today, but you can find it by just turning the time dial back here on UA-cam to the 1950's thru 1980's. You will find something special.
I appreciated your comment very much, but just wanted to very respectfully disagree with your statement of a shortage of meaningful music today. The human condition remains forever, and I think because of that meaningful music will never stop being made. I would just recommend you to listen to Self Control or White Ferrari by Frank Ocean and tell me that doesn't make you feel some way... With that being said, many peace and blessings be upon you. I actually heard this Bread song for the first time in my life yesterday while I was hanging out with my parents. It popped up on shuffle, and my dad immediately knew it and told me all about the band. Just goes to show, even though this song was made 50+ years ago, music can live on forever and continue to create new and fresh memories for everyone.
My Linda passed away on march 1st 2017 after a year of us fighting brain cancer, after 46 years of loving each other thru good times and bad, in the last year we spoke through each other mostly with eye contact, holding hands and being with each other pretty much all the time, she always took care of everyone first in her life and sacrificed her wants and needs for others, we had 6 beautiful children together and to this I can say I am the luckiest man on earth and never deserved her, I have a piece of me gone I know will never be filled, this was our song in high school.
+CAMERON STUART ....so anyone who thinks this song sucks is a "troll"...but you are not right? Cameron probably told dozens of women that he wants to make it with them...and they all laughed!
No, anyone who's first post is calling someone "a broke old goat" is a troll. What the song is or whether you like it or not is besides the point. Definitely a troll
As a teenager I always wanted "to make it" with David Gates. Handsome, romantic, fantastic voice, and beautiful messages, it's no wonder none of the boys were good enough!

They have to be the best ballad group ever. I still have their albums I bought as a teen. I'd lay there....close my eyes...and dream. Songs I never tire of. Davids voice ....sweet.
Bread was at it's peak just before I was born and Bread is one of my all time fave band. I 💗 Bread!!!! Beautiful songs. I picture teenagers making out to Bread back in 1972 💋😋
David and his Fabulous band never sounded or looked better......this was a real classic hit of the good old days.....we can always keep this great music alive forever with these wonderful video clips. A BIG THANKS to Victoria Rocher for posting this!!!
This song reminds me of my mom who passed from cancer this past June. Mom would have the radio on in the car when I was a kid and this song would play. Sweet old days!❤

+Carolyn Campbell - beautiful little band, David Gates really had his finger on the pulse back then - intimate, meaningful lyrics combined with lovely, catchy melodies - BTW, that a great personal pic. :-)
Midnight Special used to air around 11:30 here in northern NJ when I was a kid. I used to try SO hard to stay up to watch but failed miserably.... but my older sister would give me a play by play in the morning. LOVE Bread!
David Gates is a great writer of sweet-sounding, soft songs with extremely romantic lyrics. His songs still sound great 40+ years later. He also had some great lines like his lyrics from "If": "If a man could be 2 places at 1 time, I'd be with you, tomorrow and today, beside you all the way."
Awesome song reminds when I was a little kid on summer days and my mom doing her spring cleaning and me running around swimming in the pool ahhhh worry free days!
Don't we all wish we could go back to a simpler time when we had no responsibilities and life was trouble free >> if someone finds that time machine we can all go back and relive those times again >> I'm sure all the seats will be taken .
Nice and beautiful song with simple yet meaningful lyrics. Love is like that, direct and simple. We are the ones who complicate things needlesly. But if we just let them be, the result is wonderful. Music is like a time machine, one remembers how one felt and dreamt when one was Young hearing a song as good as this. Great!!
I am 23 years old and have no idea with old bands. but this song is really good. i wish i could go back to those days when this band was still popular. :/ damn those twerk and s3x in my generation.
It's not just the music. It captures something that no longer exists
That's the thing isn't it?
Absolutely, and it can't even be explained to a generation that is oblivious to it
Golden years of youth and innocence shielded by our parents and God’s eternal hand 🙏
Who could have known at the time that it would go so wrong so fast?
We need to bring it back. I’ll disagree. Gates was tapped into the eternal. The eternal never can go away. But it can be dimmed for sure.

Dreams, they're for those who sleep

But you believe the things that I do
And we'll see it through

Don't we all wish we could go back to a simpler time when we had no responsibilities and life was trouble free >> if someone finds that time machine we can all go back and relive those times again >> I'm sure all the seats will be taken .

My favorite American Band. Love David Gates. Such a nice voice, and he had a way with words also.
I am brasilian, but I love so much Bread. The David Gate's voice is wonderful!
The 70s had such great love songs and the best rock.
Now...THAT... was music!!!!!
I feel happier just listening to such great talent :)
😊
My kind of music...miss it
Nice and beautiful song with simple yet meaningful lyrics. Love is like that, direct and simple. We are the ones who complicate things needlesly. But if we just let them be, the result is wonderful. Music is like a time machine, one remembers how one felt and dreamt when one was Young hearing a song as good as this. Great!!
Fabulous memories of 1970 come rushing back. Released on May 30, 1970, reaching # 1 on August 22.
wonderful talent.
Brings one back to a time that is like a dream
I really do miss when things were groovy or cool. The Midnight Special was truly special. Thanks for posting.
