He hired an architect, engineer, lawyer, and home inspector. These guys went over every inch his house. After he and the lawyer gave the insurance company all their findings he was approved for a new house from the foundation up and rent for a luxury apartment while it was being built. The man in your video was smart to hire a company to make sure that he gets a fair settlement.
That is awesome...so glad to hear your son did that and was able to be compensated. Honestly I don't know how complicated the whole process is but that's why I would hire people to help me, to me it's worth the added expense.

8:30 This dude carries no insurance and immediately becomes political and flames FEMA for not giving a handout one week after the storm. Instead of thinking what the governor did to make insurance so expensive in Florida, he yet again believes Ukraine has anything to do with him getting uninsured/ flooded. FEMA is really meant for the last option and won’t be quick, otherwise everyone would ditch their insurance and rely on FEMA. Point is, DONT be this guy.
I know, that burnt me up more than anything. His ignorance and political bias is making his life so much harder than it needs to be and of course he scapegoats the wrong parties while praising those who are screwing him over. Ignorance is absolutely killing us in this country!
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 he probably watches Fox News everyday and believed 750$ is all he can get. He most likely didn’t even go on the fema website to register. But there’s is NO WAY he knows he got denied in just a week after the hurricane. It’s sad that some politicians spread these fake msgs and screwed their voter base.
My main concern is how to survive all of these horrible disasters and financial crises, especially now lot of folks have lost their homes.I can recall when I was homeless and faced with many things in life until $87,000 began rolling in every 2 weeks and my Life went from a homeless nobody to a different person with good things to offer and not depending on the government!!!!!!!
My parents lived in Florida for 20 years and only had one hurricane that I can remember, of course this is when I was young, I'm old now and my parents are gone. Florida was beautiful back in those days, not overcrowded just a paradise!! I miss old Florida the living was cheap and easy A totally different world in those days. I am so happy I got to experience the "Old Florida" before it was ruined by the rich and stupid!!!
I'm with ya. I grew up on the west coast south of Tampa in the 70s and 80s and I tell people it was truly a Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn existence in the sense that it was simple and fun and easy. It truly was paradise that's now buried under concrete.
To the restaurant owner who owns 3 restaurants but doesn't know how many employees he has, should know that FEMA does not cover businesses never have never will. So even if your were Ukrainian you wouldn't get help from FEMA but nice try showing your cult like tendencies. If they had to cover businesses there would be no FEMA for the people. Owning 3 restaurants and not having insurance is just a stupid move on his part and I don't feel sorry for him at all. He is the type of owner that claims the employees are like family but I will bet his family and the employees don't live in the same neighborhood or have the same lifestyle. I have seen his type many times before and I will also bet he has no workman's comp or unemployment insurance either. He probably knows that he needs to go to the SBA for help but since he isn't an honest businessman he knows the SBA will not help people that have no insurance, don't file taxes on time every year, do not keep financial business records, do not do yearly inventories. I was a District Manager for a casual dining company I had ten stores and anywhere from 250 to 275 employees that fluctuated. When Charley his us in 2004 we were fully covered for the brick and mortar, and the employees. If you don't have insurance than you shouldn't have a business. If you are claiming that insurance is too expensive than I know you are just too greedy and complain all the time that you don't make any money and cry poormouth all the time.
You are the nasty person. You are awful. I am beyond words for you. So glad that I don't know you. Nasty person you are a disgrace to the human race. Mercy on you and your family. Mercy
Did I hear right? Guy owns three restaurants with no insurance? On the Florida coast? It’s hard to feel sorry for someone like that. I feel terrible for his employees though.
Fucking 90 years of business without issue, dude can afford insurance. Complaining about Ukraine but has been cheaping out on his business this whole time. The motel owner had insurance, no excuse for not having insurance as a business on the barrier islands.
yes!. My guess is good that if he once had good insurance. However, the business insurance have gone up 10 -20 fold. His restaurant ins would be about $25K a month. Maybe more.
I used to live on the Isle of Wight, a reasonably sized island off the south coast of England. One bar I visited had markers showing the flood levels just from the storm surges, going back 70+ years. The building was brick and stone, about 120 years old so had a good chance of survival, plus they used to put the cigarette machine up on beer crates when they knew a storm was on its way. Then in the 80's we had a hurricane, no idea what level, but strong enough to destroy hundreds of slate roofs, a large section of sea-wall and road, plus thousands of mature trees. The insurance claims were wild, and not everyone was insured. My car was battered by flying masonry and wasn't covered. As this was considered a freak event back then, you could still get reasonably priced insurance, but now the climate has changed and these weather events are no longer "freak" there are many places which have become un-insurable, mainly for flooding. The Isle of Wight is shrinking along its south side, being washed away by the sea, this has been known since the times the Romans lived there. So take a hint and don't rebuild in places where this level of destruction occurs, let some of it go back to nature which helps defend against the storm surges, and protects the places where you can build safely. AND don't listen to local politicians who are clinging on to power by constantly telling you lies.
When you build you home/business on a sand bar what did you think was going to happen? Coastal areas like this should be turned into parks or just let nature take over.
Or at least not build on the ground level. That should be utilized for parking, utility and other areas that will be "less" affected by the next storm surge. Build on stilts!
Hey John. Started watching your videos as the storms came in. Get an agent. You have an incredible relationship with the camera. You don't hype. You don't overdramatize. You don't act "folksy". You come across as a decent human and that is so rare. Thank You for putting a human face, without drama, on the situations there. Wish you success in your endeavours.. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
I really appreciate that! I just want to share the stories to help more people get a better understanding of the disaster. Honestly the rubble, the damage doesn’t translate as much as a face and their story.
We need to stop electing politicians who sell permits for flimsy buildings in areas guaranteed to experience destruction. Their greed is bankrupting Florida. Either build once to withstand the weather, or don’t build at all.
We need to STOP electing politicians (who will NEVER truly represent us anyway) FULL STOP! PERIOD! We need to govern ourselves directly through (perhaps through daily referenda) after all, what else are we goanna do when the jobs have all gone!
As someone who has been building in Florida for 30 years, I can tell you that you have no idea what you're talking about. Building codes here are insane.
This has been a foundation in Florida since the beginning that’s for sure. We absolutely should expect only resilient housing, these disasters don’t have to be as bad as they are
I live on the N.C. coast. By doing so I KNOW that the water is dangerous and I know that my life is at risk along with my property. There are zero excuses as to why you don’t have a full tank of gas and 30 gallons in containers. We all knew the storm was coming a minimum of 7 days in advance. If we build on water we will get flooded
I'm thankful that I click on this channel, old school journalism, getting in there talking to people, showing the real struggle, community helping one another, things that I did not see in the mainstream media.
Unbelievable 😢. I'm in SC. About 50 miles inland from Charleston. I have no words😢 We were hit by Helene, no comparison to Florida. Thanks for the video.
Charleston was not hit bad, but there was a lot of loss of life in South Carolina. I live in South Carolina, more people died in South Carolina and even more in North Carolina in Helene than in Milton and the entire Western NC mountain region is devastated.
If they are allowed to rebuild, they should be forced to rebuild on an elevated elevation. Unfortunately, it cost to build up above the flood level, but in the longer term is saves money and saves lives. I'm not picking on Florida, it frustrated me living in tornado alley that homes aren't built to a higher wind rating and with a tornado safe room, not a tornado shelter but an interior closet bolted to the foundation boxed in with wood versus sheetrock, extremely easy and cheap to build in new construction.
@@jamesalias595 I have a friend in St Pete who was required to buy a home above the century floodline as a loan stipulation. She & the wife have had no flooding this year, knock on wood. Don’t blame FEMA. Blame MAGA republicans who voted against funding FEMA and disaster aid right before both storms hit. Stop denying global warming. The climate is changing and storms are more frequent and stronger.
Trump isnt in office so how did he vote against funding fema right before the storms hit . Fema has no money because it was used to fund the border crossers. And on the day helna hit harris sent 200 million to Lebinon.

@@ApriliaRacer14 previous comment said GULF not Atlantic quite clearly. And the Gulf has NEVER been this bad with so many hits so close together. It's normally the more sheltered side of Florida. In fact it's far more common for storms like this in the Gulf to hit TX, LA, MS and AL or at most the panhandle than it is to hit central and southern Florida from the Gulf side.
It's not "all the time" although it appears to be getting more frequent. Until the last couple of years there hadn't been a major strike on the West Coast of Florida in decades. And even if it is happening more frequently people are going to want to live there. It's got some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, until recently the cost of living was pretty decent for beach resort towns and the weather is a lot warmer in the winter. A lot of people struggle with health problems in cold weather environments.
This is only the beginning of the devastation Florida will see in the coming years. It’s too bad people just don’t have the sense to leave. There is insurance companies, sit there and rack up money month after month for years from people that have no claims and then when something like this happens and there’s a bunch of claims hit them all at once all of a sudden they don’t want to shovel up the money. The CEO is used to living high on the hog in his million dollar mansion. People want their lives back and that’s why they get insurance. I hope any insurance companies that fight the claims have lawsuits thrown at them and lose every single time
That is highly judgemental. @#$% happens. Your issue seems to be taxpayers bailing them out, why not work on putting the people who live there in a position where that is near nil? Building codes can mitigate a lot of this. Utilities will have to go underground. It will be a long, time consuming and very expensive process, probably take 30-50 years, but it can be mitigated.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 You misconstrued my point. I'm not opposed to the government helping out in disasters. People keep rebuilding in areas that are constantly being flooded, blown or burned away and then expect continued FEMA funds. Maybe Florida needs to stop issuing building permits in areas that are subject to destruction. We have the same crap here in California. People build too close to the beach or the edge of the cliff. Absolutely, When hiring a contractor in Florida after a hurricane, ensure they’re licensed and insured, check reviews and references, get multiple quotes, avoid paying large upfront fees, and sign a detailed contract outlining the work and costs. Be cautious of scammers.
They have 50,000 line men now in Florida have seen 10 triple rows with 10 to 15 vehicles each in stagging areas. If you seen all those Trucks driving down to Florida those are paid with federal tax Dollars
Repairs and fixing your home is not the taxpayers duty. The are here to clear roads repare powerlines and provide basic shelter and food. Not fancy repairs.
If you can afford to live near the ocean, then you're smart enough to recognize the danger from hurricanes. Please don't expect FEMA to rescue you and your entitlement lifestyle, while poor Americans need help from FEMA. Don't live near the ocean if you dont want to pay for storm damage.

And still vote Trump, still ignore or deny climate change.. I have sympathy for all these people and I can imagine they are angry and need some way to ventilate their stress but how people think that voting Trump will help is beyond me.. we need to cut down on carbon emissions because the hurricanes will keep coming back and with higher temperatures also increased strength. It's no rocket science or fiction anymore! Being angry won't help.. being sensible and accept that some difficult and inconvenient choices have to be made is the only way out.
You realize if the US cuts it's carbon emissions down to 0%, hurricanes will still keep hitting us more and more often? I think you forget, the US isn't the leader in emissions, and not anywhere NEAR the #1 polluter. Explain to me how we will get India, China and Russia to switch entirely to green power? We won't......... Quit being so near-sighted.
We need miles and mile of mangroves put back around the coast. 60% of storm surges can be absorbed by them. The coral is dead due to tires used to protect them in the 70s. Hold on all new builds. Stop clearing the land. Those that need to rebuild need to be on piers. With lots of coastal vegetation replanted . Building on or next to the beach unfortunately is not safe anymore.

My home flooded in the bedroom and foyer with 2 feet of water from idalia and I spent 2 months fixing everything myself. Helene trashed the whole house with 4 to 5 feet of water and the smell was disgusting! Was told it's level 3 flooding which contains sewer water. I spent the last 2 weeks salvaging what I could. My home was built in 1950 and had never sustained flooding of any consequence before idalia. As a lifelong resident of Florida I've seen a dramatic change in the weather and while cleaning up from Helene the temperature was 95 degrees according to my truck which would have been unheard of at the beginning of October as little as 10 years ago! I appreciate all these videos that claim how resilient Floridians are and they will restore their homes. The only way I'd rebuild is with a fortress home 12 feet off the ground but that isn't going to happen. I'm done as doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is insanity. IMO this is just the beginning of what's in store for Florida and unfortunately things have permanently changed! I have flood insurance and to put salt in the wound I had to hire an adjuster who I'll pay 10 percent of all claims settled. The adjuster from the flood insurance company was a total joke as he downplayed my catastrophic damage! This is the beginning unfortunately as the West Coast of Florida has been permanently changed and these mega storms are the reality of our the future. Milton went from a tropical storm to a cat 5 in 30 hours and Florida was extremely lucky as Milton encountered severe shear before landfall. In fact it was more like a cat 2 or strong cat 1 at landfall as the southern eyewall was completely sheared. There isn't one report showing sustained winds of 120 mph. The highest gusts I heard were 105 mph. So as bad as it was it could've been much more devastating!
I'm saddened to read the comments from people who criticize the residents and business owners for living in these coastal communities. I've traveled all over Florida and stayed in many of these places, and I loved them. I vacationed in Pass A Grille, Siesta Key, Anna Maria Island, Sanibel. One of the best beach vacations I ever had was at the Hutchinson Island Inn; on the east coast; which was totally destroyed by a hurricane in 2004. The owners elected to not build back. Can anyone tell me how Pass A Grille is? It's primarily a residential area, with many homes near the water.
I think there may be some miscommunication. I will criticize the heck out of people who live there. I am a 6th generation Floridian. My criticism is how they chose to live there and how the politicians who have no spine have allowed building code to be what it is. One of my houses that I owned in Florida was built CBS with jalousie windows. Those windows are the worst possible windows to have for insulation. Prior to windows that could take a 150mph hit, they were the best windows for a hurricane as they allowed wind to move through the house during a storm. Once the 150mph windows came out, I replaced all of the jalousie windows. That simple little concept of not defering upgrades, not defering maintenance makes a big difference. I was scoping out to build a new house in South Florida. Architects were wondering why, a house that was ~3 miles from the ocean should be built on stilts with a metal roof, was what I wanted. Look at the houses that survived with nominal damage. They were all stilt houses. Look how far from the ocean that houses flooded. Florida, IMO, is going to have to have a major rebuilding. Code will have to be changed/updated. You will start to see more and more stilt built houses, not only on the water, but following flood plain maps. Those stilt houses will no longer just be ones that you see in the Keys or off the Suwannee River. Florida had a massive growth in the 1950s to 1970s. Some of those houses, just like the ones in this video have lived beyond their lifespan and have no value. The lot has value, but the house does not. That is going to be a bitter pill that the state will have with properties there.
@@JonathanPetramala can you be more specific with the name of the video? I think I've watched all of your videos about Hurricane Milton and I don't remember hearing the name of Pass A Grille. Mabe you used the county name or barrier island name?

@@jackchu21 who is stupid And what for ,??
Watching people help each other , there’s hope for human kind. We need more people like that
Helping each other is good, but it won't solve the weather problems Florida faces.
We had worse hurricanes before the ICE was a thing. The worst happening in 1850. People trying to pretend this is a new phenomenon are weird.
When you build you home/business on a sand bar what did you think was going to happen? Coastal areas like this should be turned into parks or just let nature take over.
Or at least not build on the ground level. That should be utilized for parking, utility and other areas that will be "less" affected by the next storm surge. Build on stilts!
That basically kills local economy

This has been a foundation in Florida since the beginning that’s for sure. We absolutely should expect only resilient housing, these disasters don’t have to be as bad as they are
I think the problem is so much housing stock, especially on Florida’s west coast is 50-60-70 years old. They weren’t built for this
I live on the N.C.
OBX requires full hurricane insurance at least in Southern Shores. The 1961 Ash Wednesday Storm will happen some day again.
Try this excuse. You don't have a place to safely store 30 gallons of gas.

That is highly judgemental. @#$% happens. Your issue seems to be taxpayers bailing them out, why not work on putting the people who live there in a position where that is near nil? I feel so bad for All of you affected by these Hurricanes. This is ONE Of the Main Reasons why I Left Florida in 2013. I knew this was going to continue to happen and Insurance rates and Taxes would Skyrocket. My Heart goes out to All of you.
Please be Safe. My thoughts and prayers are with All Floridians🙏🙏
It will be tough but I think a lot of folks will stick it out. I am going to.
That's the reality of insurance in Florida where the governor took in 10 million dollars from insurance companies for his PAC. It's total BS when they say the government has your back!
I'm right here with you, house built in 55, just not as much water as yours, the northern wind this time did lots damage, I have a crappy policy with a 3495 hurricane deductible that I don't have, I got a crappy FEMA after the last storm.. here alone cleaning things out, I need tree work, volunteers, as I clean for a living for airbnb's that got wiped out and unemployment is a joke, do you know how I find this RAMP company this man used?
I am sorry to read what you are dealing with. I have heard the same stories from a lot of folks.
@@JonathanPetramala ,thank you, and so difficult when so many others have lost more, can u plz send ph# or link to Ramp company that Kenny's was using? When I Google anything even under insurance I get Ramp installers...So sad for everyone
These beach towns are so charming so it’s always very sad to see them take on damage like this. Despite living in Florida all my life the big hurricanes truly scare me.
The character will be changing and that is a livelihood and dream being drowned
They can't no help because of Rep. Mike Johnson!
There are People who Lost everything and 200 Million and the Business that pays employees , all of the Tax papers , family photo's . Birth certificates , just a lot .
That money and Femma and Noa goes away if Trump becomes president!!
😮
How's that? Fema is broke right now because Biden/Harris gave the Ukraine all our money
The Biden administration has been giving FEMA money to illegals. That’s why people that had their houses washed away in NC are only getting $750 while illegals got thousands. Pull your head out of your ass!
only thing going away is tRump...to prison baby !
Thank God he won't!
I'm halfway around the world away from you. In July 2024 we were also hit by the terrible yagi storm. I have witnessed and experienced terrible moments. Now that I once again witness you suffer great damage after the storm. I really sympathize with you. I wish the best and best for you❤❤❤.
Sorry to hear about your experience too
@@JonathanPetramala It's sad that storms are getting more unpredictable and more and more dangerous.😔
help me understand why people don't have insurance, is it strictly cost related?
Margins are very tight in the restaurant biz and there has been a 103 year streak of no floods
Some can't get it . I tried 3 times house built 1940. Everything renovated. Electric. Roof. New taped and textured sheetrock , cabinets water heater air conditioner etc. They charged me $500 deposit and $140 a month. All 3 insurance companies took the deposit and returned the 1st payments canceled me and kept the deposits. I never filed one claim. Never got the deposits back.
It is a nationwide crisis, not just FL. Disasters Occur, Cost of goods Skyrocket, Fraud runs Rampant, Litigation becomes Frivolous and Profitable only to the Legal Parties.
Therefore, Insurance Premiums have had a 150 - 300% increase, in the last 5 years. Wealthy, Middle, or Low Income Class ALL suffer from this BROKEN SYSTEM.
WHO SUFFERS⁉️ The insured.
Painful as the moment may be, there will be joy in the morning. Because it's just a test, also a preparation for what's coming ahead of us. So we must believe and have faith that our prayers will be answered promptly by our creator. Eventhough, it may seem painful to us, but we know that God is in control and He's way bigger than the powerful storms that are raging before us. Hallelujah!!! 😔 ❤
you lost me when you showed the guy's ukraine comment. Play all the politics you want but not with me as a viewer. FO!
the uploader Jonathan has made many claims about allowing those affected to speak their minds. I personally believe he should have tried to correct the record, or at the very least placed a caption in that part of the clip correcting the restaurateurs claims. I have a feeling he took that business owners word at face value and did nothing to correct it.
Hope you are ok out there
This is so sad!! Where do you begin to start to reestablish your life. I'm in mental health and after Katrina the level of suicides increased dramatically because people had simply lost hope. I'm sending prays and have donated to help with the cause both here and in Asheville.
Hurricane Ian was the start of the new ways hurricanes hit and how often, I survived Ian barely and didn’t evacuate, I evacuate now every time
I am glad you are ok and learned the lesson
It's starting to look like climate change everywhere you go.
Noooo... you are not allowed to say that in Florida. Instead you have to come up with something else, like a sci-fi machine that controls the weather.
@@bg30071st US weather modification patent was 1947. Intelligent people research.
So explain the record setting hurricane seasons in the late 1800s and early 1900s?
@Trollollolollol you explain. When did anyone start keep track? I doubt.it was before 1900
@@joinjen3854 so if you don't know then look into it. I already have thus why I'm begging the question. You don't think they tracked these events a hundred years ago come on you can't be that nieve
If you look at my video from last week, you can see how devastating it was for pass a grille. Very sad, my favorite little town here
I think there may be some miscommunication.
@@teresaharris-travelbybooks5564 It's Pinellas County, St. Pete Beach, the furthest south point
It breaks my heart to see and hear these stories. I wish I had the answers for these business owners but I don't. I have been self employed since 1981. I wouldn't even know where to begin if this happened to me up here. This story almost made me cry for these people. One thing I don't understand is why so many people don't evacuate I think I would pack up all my valuables and leave. Thanks for all you do Johnathan. Don't forget I want to buy you lunch or dinner some time in Nashville. Stay Safe. God Bless!
I appreciate you as always. These guys are good people, they support dozens of families and a community. They aren’t trying to do anything than survive. Very tough situation.
Also…you don’t want me in Nashville because that means something bad is happening;)
So there stubbornness he can stay there then
