Just Stick to Crocheting

- I don't often get sassy over such things because 1 minute is never enough time to go into the nuance of bigger issues like the ethics of high fashion so inevitably people will misinterpret what you say, often wilfully for the sake of their own ego....
BUT, the implication that crochet is a lesser art form than couture sewing really got my goat. And to imply that I'm just a silly little crocheter who doesn't know what they're talking about really riled me up like crochet isn't difficult or important.
I could honestly write an essay on this topic, and as I am also a fashion historian I could also get that essay published in an academic journal if I so wished. But I don't want to do that. Because I have found that sort of academic institution to be elitist, ableist and out of touch. I'd rather we had an informed discussion here, where it is accessible to almost everyone, than write a paper that will be read by probably 50 people tops. But the issue with talking about these things in public internet forums is that the general abandonment of social etiquette we so often see online will inevitably enter the discussion.
I think this person has misunderstood what I mean. Fair enough. I was deliberately being sensationalist for the sake of views. That's how the internet works. These short form video formats in particular thrive off of that stuff. But I also feel they are misinformed about how fashion works at the highest level. I accept I might be wrong about some things, this is not my area of interest or expertise after all. But to publicly put me down, whilst simultaneously reinforcing many of the misguided ideals I try to challenge here about the sexism, elitism and prejudice of the fashion industry is just petty and annoying.
I wouldn't have responded here if I didn't have a point to make. Crochet is just as much of an art form as 'couture'. If you're making your own crochet/knitting/sewing patterns, testing them, toileing them, refining them, altering them to be exactly how you want them and getting them to fit as fits your vision of the piece, then that's couture. You deserve that title just as much as a dead, white, French man, or a Nazi-sympathiser woman. WHOEVER YOU ARE.
If you read all this thanks for stopping by and leave me a 🦆 in the comments so I know I'm not just shouting into the void.
And it should go without saying but don't go and be mean to this person. Honestly it's not worth your time or energy. Save that for your crochet projects. - Навчання та стиль
I'm not really being serious here but if you'd like to read a more nuanced response I suggest you read the description on this video 😅
Thanks for prompting me to find descriptions on shorts. I’ve been wondering where they were, and thought they must not exist, and now I know ❤
Wonderfully said!!!!!❤💐
i always forget there are even descriptions on shorts, youtube does a wonderful job of hiding them :/
🦆 😂 well said . ❤
Maybe pop it in the journal also, just for the record! For history sakes . X
I hate when people use x number of years in skill A means I'm probably not so bad at skill B . Seamstress doesn't really have anything to do with crochet or knitting
Them:STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW!
Claude: I AM!!!
The audacity! Imagine telling a trained couture seamstress to not comment on couture sewing 😭
Lol, love the sass 😂 keep it up 👏 On a different note, I've adopted your "good, better, best" system and am finding it an excellent system to cope with my cancer recovery. Thank you so much ❤
I love when UA-camrs are both informative and shady towards people who are talking any which way 😂
Claude, careful! Those mics are expensive! Watch how often you drop them. 😂
It’s stuff like this that keeps me coming back to your channel… because firstly the snark is brilliant, and mainly because you *do* have the training and experience and knowledge in couture and fashion history to give us viewers so much insight and appreciation of the clothes making and fashion process. And anyone who doesn’t take the time to realise or appreciate you is an idiot. ❤
" If you're making your own crochet/knitting/sewing patterns, testing them, toileing them, refining them, altering them to be exactly how you want them and getting them to fit as fits your vision of the piece, then that's couture. "
I never really thought of it that way, I'm just making things _fit_ whomever I am making them for, but that is the definition of couture isn't it? :) 🦆
That is exactly the definition of couture. Why do we hold these (often) white men on a pedestal? All they've done is perfect the marketing!
🦆All of your work, whether it be sewing or crochet, is well crafted. I am glad you took time to explain they're more similar than you'd expect. Creativity and hard work are required for both, but one or the other could be tougher, depending on the crafters strengths or project
😂 It's funny how people on the internet seem to think they know everything about you from one tiny clip.
And they have the right to insult you and an entire artform based on their ill informed assumptions 🤷🏻♀️ thankfully it's water off a ducks back to me 🤣🦆
My dear Miss Claude, you are the finest example of sassy, classy and clever! Not to mention talented with an abundance of creativity! Peace and Blessings and Good Health to you🧶
You know what I’d get my knickers in a twist about? My f’ing zip breaking. Any zip. Any context. That would seriously bunch me up.
🦆
That, I think, is the danger of shorts. They get you more views, but that also gets you views from people who are more interested in ~drama~ than what you actually have to say. I think. 😳
That's just it. If I'd made a 20 minute video debating each side, presenting counter points and analysing each one I don't think I'd have gotten such a response. Firstly because I could demonstrate that I do, in fact, know what I'm on about 😅 but also because I would hopefully have prompted a more complex thought process than HA YOU'RE WRONG!
@@RetroClaudesalt though only those of us that love your channel would get to enjoy it and learn something. The "here for the drama" folks wouldn't make it through the whole video.
The audacity of some people 😒 it doesn’t take long to find out that your a trained seamstress, even though you’re currently only showing knitting and crocheting
🦆 you are my hero for so many ass-kicking reasons but this post takes the absolute CAKE
You tell em Claude!😀
Came for the expertise, stayed for the sass
You shouldn't be shut down for saying anything about fashion. Love watching your projects. Especially the beautiful lace work.
🦆 I've just found your channel & absolutely love your content. You make such good points here and I'm glad you've highlighted them - needs to be said!
I desperately wanted to go into costume design or couture when i left school but couldn't for health reasons. So i spent 25yrs teaching SEN children and doing speech therapy. Now at 43, I'm finally going back to all the tailoring & toiles, but what interests me most is designs that allow the wearer to actually change the shape of the clothes so they are multi functional for different occasions. Currently working towards a collection of wedding dresses that can be reworn to bring their joy to everyday not just the wedding day. Hoping it works out! 😁🤞
And don't forget a fabulous knitter!! 😊
🦆 Thank you for your videos. ❤️
If I could like this more than once, I would like it a 100 times over. The sass is phenomenal!
you go girl!
Love this response!!💚💕
My dearest loves to use response to any "demand", especially to the silliest one - "Don't tell me what to do!".. then proceed to do it :D I consider this to be one of the best "dontTellMeWhatToDo" responses ever :D
Release the Quacken😄! 🦆,🐔, and a 🦏 for good measure💚.
I am so encouraged by all the ducks 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆 in your thread. What a great viewership you must have!! ❤❤ well said.
The sass! 💯💯💯
🦆❤🫂 Hugs and hope you're having a lovely day!
Very well said! And love the sass.
🦆 🙌🏼 point made. I completely agree
Well said, ❤
🦆 Love the comeback and integrity you showed in your response.
🦆a little duck for you
I hear you loud and clear! I decided to take my crochet hobby to a new level, take some courses to learn new techniques and I am now selling my creations. That said, when I make comments on music and singers I get bombarded with hate. I have a degree in Music Education and my core subject is voice & opera. Yes, I am a trained lyric soprano. I have 30 years of experience as a singer, voice teacher and coach. People just assume I don't know what I am talking about and that I make comments out of spite, hate and envy. Whaaaat? 😂 I learned my lesson soon enough and I just never reply to such comments. People's self proyection is a very messy thing. 🤣
Well said ❤️🦆
chefs kiss
🦆YES! And I'd also second kittywalker5613 of adopting your "good, better, best" to other facets of life, and it has been extremely useful at helping me not fall down the rabbit hole of self-flagellation because something isn't "perfect". You Are Awesome.
Sewing is, of course, difficult and a tremendous skill that requires time and effort, but, if anything, shouldn't crochet be just as impressive? I mean, when you are knitting or crocheting, you are literally *making* the fabric, not only stitching it together. And why should that mean you don't get to have an opinion when they didn't do enough looking to know you also sew and knit and are a dress historian? The whole "couture" thing is just gatekeeping with glitter on it and your point about it being wasteful "throwaway/single-use" fashion is very valid no matter how stylish it is. People used to make garments to last and wear them repeatedly which is a mentality we have lost even or especially in high fashion. Being a crocheter (not to mention one who has all the rest of your qualifications) shouldn't make you any less able to point that what any person who has eyes could notice. 🦆
You are right. ❤️🦆i thought i couldn't find the enough, but then realized i just needed to put my glasses on. Sigh, probably should still watching UA-cam with a migraine too. 😊
❤ this! For anyone wondering, the description is found by clicking the 3 dots in the top right🦆
I tell creators occasionally about their audio fails. I always get "What DO YOU know about it?" back.
I'm like, I dunno 20+ years in broadcast production?
The idiots don't want to know, the newbies can't wait to learn.
That's where I leave it.
You're great. Don't change.
Omg I made that crochet boho wrap for a friend's wedding.
🦆Thank you❤
🦆 exactly!
Sending you many hearts, as my phone doesn't seem to want to send sucks ! ❤❤❤❤❤
🦆 I actually didnt know couture meant fitted. As a fellow crocheter I really appreciate your very eloquent discussion of how crochet is equally as important as what is generally considered couture ❤
Get em Claude!
ROFL, got love when randoms make demands.
Get them told. You are ace 👌🏻
You look beautiful, arevery talented even with editing, and everyone who dictates commemts at you can F off!
🦆 well said!
You're the best
Ha. You rock. Thanks!
🦆I wish i had the patience and know-how to knit ...with wool.. wool i knew was from a farm that raised sheep well, but wool itself is more expensive than it ought to be if farmers dont get enough to expense the labor of sheering. And i live in a hot and humid environment, so wool is a no-go for 350 days out of the year. Anyway. My overall point is you're talented, and i appreciate your expertise.
New follower because of this interaction 🥰
You are truely polite.
Good rebuttal. Not that the complainer deserved your time, but we truly benefit with your detailed reply. I didn't know Haute Couture was a labor organization!
sub'd for the energy and the snark. will stay for everything else
[Duck emoji] Don't know how to put this here while being on the computer and not on the smartphone.
What I think is just so overseen with crafting is the time and energy it takes. Like... sometimes I think the worth of a clothing/garment is based on the money you pay for it. And a lot of people (who don't do crafts themselfes) forget that knitted/crocheted (?) clothes are so friggin expensive. Like... I finished knitting my second ever knitted sweater and the material alone costed around 80€ (don't know what that would be in pounds or dollars sorry) and it took me around 40 or 50 hours to knit. So if I would combine material and labor (and would estimate an hourly wage of 10€ - which is considered relatively fair where I come from) this sweater would cost 500 to 600€... So how is that for "just some craft" one should stick to because it has not as much worth as some other clothes-making...
The reason couture is expensive is not because it's inherently more skillful, it's the time it takes! People are so used to mass production (and sweat shop labour) they don't realise that yes, even a basic knitted sweater could run to the 1000s
Ugh I am sorry, it always leaves a nasty feeling to be met with stuff like that! I can't find the duck emoji so here is my alternative: QUACK!
🦆🦆🦆 ❤
I had no idea you had that much experience! That's so cool! So just a curiosity question, do you prefer doing the paid Hollywood work or your own personal projects more?
I try not to boast about 😅 I've done some fun Hollywood projects but you don't typically work on a whole costume start to finish. I did one job where I just sewed braces buttons on hundreds of pairs of trousers. Turned out it was for Tim Burton's Dumbo. A cool credit to have but not creatively fulfilling. I'd much rather design, pattern and craft my own pieces ☺️
🦆was totally worth reading
🦆🤎
I think you should start your shorts with 'Hi, I'm Claude, trained costume seamstress with masters in victorian studies, sewing teacher with 12 years of experience working on film and theatre' 😂 Or have written disclaimer on screen, just of pure spite 😂 Seriously, do they think that everyone just talk about stuff they have no idea about? And how on earth crochet is less difficult art to master, did they ever seen what you can do with crochet?!
quack quack🦆🦆🦆
🦆 ❤ 🦆
What got me was that the seamstress used a cheap zipper on such a luxury project. I, as a layperson, was offended and would have taken the dress back and sued for the embarrassment!
Your comment on the Oscars dress was valid and other people should stop with gaslighting people who actually know what they’re talking about. Ie you. Big hugs, can’t wait for the Daisy top reveal - whenever it’s ready
Tell em, Queen.
New sub here, this is my second short I've seen and I really appreciate your response here!🎉🎉🎉
Well said! 🦆🦆🦆
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I kind of need a base pattern to start with, but then I strike off on my own and get a finnished product that looks nothing like the pattern I started with, but exactly what I envisioned. My daughter once drew a dress and I made it for her for her birthday. So, could that place me in the "couture" title?
TELL 'EM!
I traded a successful career and life in the city to move to the middle of nowhere to grow fruits and veggies in my garden to sell seeds and the amount of people that think ive thrown away my life is astounding, I've even had people tell me I'm wasting my life.
Um I'm happy and I'm contributing to the diversity of food security in the world, how is that wasting my time? People always try to value what you do based on their own personal measuring stick.
🦆
❤
♥️😊
🦆❤
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
🦆 people being smug about 'correcting' experts is so frustrating!
but can be very funny at times, I do recommend the dontyouknowwhoiam subreddit, it's very entertaining!
subbed just for the SASS
Deliciously spicy 😂
🦆 I just learned something new 😊 ❤
I LOVE YOU!!! :D
I’m never mean to my crochet projects 🦆
Watercolor...🤔😏😉👍
I don't think anyone even needs to possess a particular skill themselves to recognize shoddy or sloppy work as such or to appreciate and value excellence.
The thing of it is is that people these days don't value things that actually take a lot of time. Because they themselves could never see themselves doing it. Because they don't have the gall or the wherewithal or the desire to do it yet when they see someone else doing it they're like oh that's wonderful but I'm still not willing to pay money for it that's decent money for it because I see this as something as a side hobby instead of an actual vocation!
You tell ‘em Claude!! P.s., I looove your sweater here!! Might I ask what the pattern is?
I knew she knew how to sew, just doesn't always have the stamina. If she mentioned all her experience I don't remember it. I just like watching her.
I always say any issues with my handmade stuff is their on purpose so you know its couture😂
Polite way of saying "bish, I'm a mother effing expert!" 😂
🦆 🦆 🦆
Here's another 🦆 for you! 😜
🦆🦆
Can't please everyone, I guess 🤷♀️
Never going to be everyone's cup of tea 🤷🏻♀️
🦆 - couture is couture whether one is famous on the internet or not.
Sewing is a lot more difficult than crocheting though. Especially for someone like me who has zero spatial awareness pattern construction is uhhh crazy difficult
I disagree but then I'm not very good at crochet and sewing comes naturally to me 😅😂
Just chiming in to say that I think the difficulty is actually pretty comparable for sewing and crochet. The learning curves are arguably steep in different places, theres a lot more variety in beginner level projects for crochet and pattern making for sewing is fairly well known as an advanced skill and lots of people want to try it. But I’d say it’s more individual which is more difficult (and attempting to do something that you know is difficult and doesn’t come naturally is always impressive) We all have particular skills or ways of thinking that come easier to us and those that don’t.
Crochet can definitely go to couture levels where you would be designing a garment, blending multiple materials, planning closures, surface/texture/colour pattern, and different finishing techniques all at once to make a garment that fits one specific body. There’s a couture crochet and crocodile leather dress if anyone wants to look up an example. The pieces are crocheted together, not sewn.
spatial awareness and pattern construction are as important in both though?? I'm confused by what you mean here
