- On board Porsche 918 Spyder at Nürburgring Nordschleife - As the first vehicle to boast global road homologation, the Porsche 918 Spyder has conquered the 20.6-kilometre lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes. Achieving a time of exactly six minutes and 57 seconds, the super sportscar equipped with a hybrid drive shaved 14 seconds off the previous record.

***** You mean they don't use a clutch PEDAL. The PDK and other transmissions like it actually use TWO clutches. That is why they are called "Dual Clutch" transmissions. SMH.

Can't wait till a Tuner like Ruf or 9ff takes this car and puts a couple of turbos on it. Wouldn't take much boost to make this thing the fastest car ever. I don't see Porsche doing it, but if they did make a Super Special Edition that was boosted, they would have the advantage with the programing knowledge they have learned from building it in the first place.

No supercar can beat this 918 in corners 4wd system so overpower. the traction is amazing.
in a chris harris review (i think it was) one of the leaders of the porsche project said that without the electric engines the car would just weigh about 1300kg, which is about 400kg lighter than the actual hybrid model.

There is no way the LaFerrari is going to beat that lap. The AWD and all wheel steering in the 918 gives it a huge advantage

Where are all the GTR and Corvette fanboys?? lol This lap is a showcase of what Porsche can do when they really go for it and so doing prove just how behind Nissan and Gm really are. Oh and I'm sure they didn't need to tweak their car to the nth degree to do it, like i suspect both Nissan and gm did.

Compare this to the Ruf Yellowbird lap, it's like one's a boat.
Unreal that the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR hit 7:01 on this track back in October. It beat the 918 and Mclaren on Laguna Seca, and will do the same for this track. Both 1 million dollar cars, Dodge VIper ACR goes for 118K. Kind of sad when you have a Hybrid with AWD and an incredible duel clutch transmission that is slower and 900K More expensive than a RWD, American, STICK SHIFT car.

well 1300kgs is 2900lbs which is a bit lighter than most super cars. If we are to add the 400kg's of the hybrid package which converts to 900lbs then this car weighs 3800lbs. I doubt it weighs that much as it would seem an impossible lap time with such a heavy car unless they are using some ridiculously advanced tire technology or such.

I think it will be interesting seeing Top Gear this series as while they may not be releasing the P1's time on this track there is not much they can do about Top Gear tessting both cars. They already did the P1 and have the 918 later in series and will do both cars back to back around the track with the same driver. May not answer which car is faster round here, but it will be a benchmark.
One interesting fact though is that Jezza said he will change his name to Jenny if the P1 doesn't beat the 918... Do you make that bet before seeing what the 918 can do? Or make it if you know what the time was taht it did round here? Wouldn't surprise me if he knew. Guess be interesting to see which is faster round top gear track at the very least. Based on stats alone I think the P1, but hey could be wrong.

I can't help but agree with Chris Harris; I think it would have been an even better car without the electric motors, which would save hundreds of kilos. It could have then been a 400 and something kw 1 tonne car....

Its hard to see, but on the last straight it looks like 290 kmh which is about 180 mph.

Fair point about it being 400kg's heavier than a gasoline only equivalent but i wonder how much of an advantage it is to have the instant torque of the electric motor, especially at low speed. must be minimal compared to the advantage of being 400kg's lighter. Are you sure about the 400kg's, because that seems excessive. Great car nonetheless.
that's just what every top of the top costs... don't understand me wrong i like the gtr either. but look at the huayra, mclaren p1, laferrari, veyron (not for lap times but top speed cruiser), it's always in the million $ range because in these cars there is built what science, physics and engineering can give you in any way at the time of production.
the gtr uses known technology which was made better (especially the AWD and car-control-software) by nissan

Both the LaFerrari and the 918 have a RWD ICE and and AWD electric motor... Im not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying Porsche won because of many other reasons.. not the drive system
This car does NOT get 70mpg. It gets 30mpg after the battery is empty (any trip longer than 20 miles). You'd be better-off buying a Prius or CRZ that get around 50mpg no matter how far you drive

that was a time attack car that's not even going on sale. The real nismo gtr only made a official time with two people in the car at 7:18. The concept 918 spyder with two people put a time down of 7:14, so that's slower lol.

The track is probably too rough to put all the power down. It is said to be a very rough ride around the 'ring!

The batteries powering the electric motor with the engine died. The power goes down from 887 horsepower, to 612.

to compare this to a GTR is well....just dumb! 1640kg/887hp vs 1700kg/570hp it should be faster big difference is the GTR has 4 seats and a shit load cheaper and would perform better in the rain than this.....IMHO these ring lap times are pointless unless they driven by the same driver in each car,much like the stig on top gear

it's not even good for the environment. The ecological disaster associated with electric motor and battery pack production is astronomical. Rare earth mining etc... They should just focus on making cars a whole lot lighter and durable. Then they wouldn't need to have so much power to be this fast

and well... research for new materials, the fact it's a hybrid, carbon fibre in general etc. are never cheap. actually you pay over 400k$ for the research and "just" 600k$ for the car itself... btw you know the gtr is subventioned? which means nissan loses money for every model.

même si il y a de plus en plus d'électronique la voiture n'en reste pas moins fantastique et le pilote est loin d'être un amateur, il faut vivre avec son temps ;)
