In the lathes at school, I use to just take a diamond needle file and touch these up when I'd find a chip or the insert was just dull. It was much faster than trying to find the tools to change the insert because 80% of the students or more, didn't put tools back where they go, everything was often cranked down so tight that one had to put the thing in a vise, etc, etc. it was an absolute joke but what do you expect when most of them are under 20 years old.
Anyway, that usually worked great for any single-insert tools on manual machines.

A lot of people think that the coating is cosmetic and for some of the cheaper inserts, it might be, I don't know. We regrind the cut-off inserts at work because we can get between 8 and 12 grinds before the geometry is changed enough that it's not worth continuing. I've noticed that on the quality inserts we use, we get about 50% more life from the coating than we do from the carbide surface. And that's solid statistical data because on the machine I use the most, we cut the same steal, same part and same size at about 500 parts per hour.

Great review John, I have one that's similar to that I bought from the UK but as you say mine is utter shite, what sort of tool pressure did you get doing it by hand, be interesting to know.

I use some Chinese indexables on the mill for roughing. Work fine for what they are.
Cheap for roughing, then quality for finish.

Good review. I enjoy these and value that with several presenters doing them a consensus is established. They had not described these inserts as a positive rake which is important for those of us with the smaller machines (12 x 36). They get the advantage of the presenter's fluent English and we get a better description. Good marketing Banggood. Now just do a better job organizing your site and search engine. I bought a set of these after you described them as positive rake. I have bought several items from them and so far have been quite satisfied. G'day Rob. Great review of the inserts. I ordered some that were the right dimensions for my tool holder but the hole in the center was too small for the hold down screw. I am holding up on any further orders until they publish enough information for me to know if I can use them.

I've not had that problem with any TCMT. I have bought some 35 degree inserts off the internet that the hole was more than a bit snug on.
I wondered at the time if it was a metric/imperial issue ?

G'day Rob bloody good test and they really preformed well and as for the price who can argue with that, especially when most of us are hobby machinist. Btw, I'm a beginner and a big fan of your channel. I found some great chunks of hardened steel (old machine parts I believe) I wanted to play around with. Is there a way to machine hardened steel on a small lathe. My chinesium inserts i got with my toolholders just shattered and the chips looked more or less like welding sparks...

The inserts you get with most budget tool holders are generally rubbish.
It depends if the metal is hardened, or case hardened on the surface.
If it's just hardened simply heat the metal red hot in a fire (add some air with the garden leaf blower to raise the temperature) let it cool and it should be annealed/workable.
If the metal is case hardened on the surface it will be a tough job getting it off and probably not worth the effort.

I've used there parting inserts and was surprised how well they performed.
I intend to try some turning inserts in the future.
I see ChrisB257 reviewed a tool set including a parting off insert, and it looked to perform well.

I have machined case hardened king pins etc and you must go in deep and hard to get under the outer surface.
It's unlikely you will get any sort of decent finish until all of the case hardened crust/outer is removed. If you want to reduce it and get a finish you will need to grind it to size with a TPG.
If you just want to remove the case hardening carbide can do it, but light cuts will just slide over the surface and do SFA.
It's puts a pretty hard/big load on a small lathe.

One other thing to be aware of when machining case hardened metal is that the chips/cuttings can severely score the lathe bed ways - worse than any grinding residue.
You must cover up and clean regularly when doing this. Case hardening residue is extremely bad for lathes.

Good video. I ordered some inserts and other stuff from them. Everything I ordered seemed to work ok. However it took 4 weeks for me to see them and then one box of the inserts was short 1. After contacting them and jumping through hoops taking pitchers of them and sending on there request , they only offered me $1.00 off my next purchase. And I had to buy mine they were not free. All though the price was good as you said, but there service was not. And I could tell there box of inserts had been through 2 checkpoints.

It's luck of the draw. Reviewers don't get any special treatment from BG as far as I know. That's why some products get bad reviews. The contact person just places the order into their system and it gets shipped same as any other.
I think my inserts took three weeks to arrive.

Thanks for the video. I wander if they always get the inserts from the same supplier? I made my first Banggood purchase a few days ago. It included some inserts. I've been using HSS and most of the time OK. I have a PM1440HD lathe that is pretty stout. Most of what I machine is of unknown pedigree. I find that I get a better finish if I use cutting oil but don't like the smoke or mess. May give a mist system a try. Machine has a coolant system but have never used it.

Great video Rob! For someone like me who is a beginner when it comes to lathe work, not to mention that I'm cheap 😊, banggood is excellent value. I've gotten a few tools and inserts from them. Hell I probably order something from them every payday. I have a set of tcmt insert holders and a qctp coming from them. I don't expect much from the qctp being made of aluminium but the price was reasonable and I figured I could make a copy from steel, once I get a milling attachment.

Dale Jenner what is your average wait for shipping? For me it has been ridiculous, around a month to 6 weeks. Also their backorder system is very inaccurate. I ordered a 7 piece lathe tool set, waited about 2 weeks past the expected ship date and finally cancelled the order. I think I will only purchase from their US warehouse in the future, which oddly everything is more expensive for the same item.
These inserts took 28 days to arrive in Adelaide, South Australia.
Another item from Ebay ordered three days earlier from China arrived with it. So the postage was slow, but no worse than Ebay.

Moneypit330 I normally pay a bit extra for their "expedited" shipping which brings the shipping time down to around 2 weeks. Free shipping is usually about a month to me in Australia. Banggood are good if you want something cheap but aren't in a hurry. I'm not in a hurry at the moment, with a broken collarbone and shoulder blade I can't do any lathe work but I can shop online!
Rob banggood supposedly are setting up an Australian warehouse, hopefully they'll have some metal working gear as well.

So who knows what's down the track. Banggood have certainly turned up the heat with all these review samples available.
They contacted me, but you can also apply though their web site. They had some viewer/subscriber limit last time I looked, but I think that's flexible depending on the channel's standing.

I had little issue with the banggood stuff they sent me to review, worked well. Rebar is tuff to machine, your lathe was crying at that feed rate 😂
I did slightly over stress the poor thing I have to admit.
Like you Rob, I've also purchased cheap inserts from different Chinese sources and most are crap - they chip too easy! I will order some of these Banggood ones though and see how they go. Incidentally, have you tried cutting 1045 with them? Cheers.

Triangle shaped inserts have a smaller tip angle and radius than square ones, which reduces the load on the lathe. But a larger radius tip will give a better finish as it's not so pointy. It's all geometry cause and effect. The following chart spells it out:

I would consider a great review would include data on DOC and Feed speeds for all materials. If the insert is designed to cut up to .050 and you only test it to .020 how do you know it's any good? Granted the speeds and feeds change based on material type and diameter but for a review you should run it until they bust to see if the can really take it.
So you think that crashing the insert into the job so hard that it pivots the tool holder in toward the job isn't a severe enough test to see if it will break ?

xynudu pivoting the tool could be caused by loose gibs or wear on the tool post mounting surface. not necessarily the torque by pushing against the metal workpiece.
Rob should have done the rebar first, the rest was really downhill. Handle that rebar, anything is possible.. Good vid
Hi Rob, I think that it first is a matter of industrial or private us, seconds it's protectionism, of the own country's factories making inserts.
I mostly compare these things from China etc, with a iPhone from 1300 dollar, you can instead of that iPhone buy 13 years every year a new
Chinese Phone.
If 10pcs TCMT 16T304 Carbide Inserts cost 110 dollar than you can buy 100 in China, you can spoil a couple than.
The kwality is a matter of experience in the process!

try yourself one of those diamond/tangential tool holders ..... i made one recently, very very useful for small hobby machining on lathes that can't really utilize carbide correctly.
plus, way cheaper than carbide inserts - they use 1/4" HSS bits, the long way, so a $6 chunk of hss could last for years.
and ... they do turning as well as facing without changing anything out. square inside corners.
.... to top it all off, only the rake angle needs to be ground, very simple.

I have looked at those. I don't like the amount of side overhang, and it's still just HSS, which cannot do carbide only work.
But I don't doubt they work well from reports by users.
Even micro lathes can run small radius carbide tooling such as TCMT. Where people get into trouble is using other wider angle insert styles.

xynudu the one i built is 3/4" from the tool post block, the overhanging part flush up against the front face of the turret tool holder. I think it is no more than your setup in this video. Tool is held in with one 5/16 18 screw and a wing nut. Believe it or not, there is no flex at all, even when taking some pretty hefty (.140" in aluminum) cuts - on a 1946 10" atlas lathe.
I should clarify too that i do not use the commercial model that is sold from australia, i made one myself. I can send you a picture if you like.

I were told that carbide inserts shouldn't be used on small lathes because they need high rpm to cut properly, so far I've stuck with HSS bits but don't fancy trying to grind them to shape. I'm confused, you've got good results on a small machine and at around 500rpm??

There's a lot of BS spread around by the the uninformed regarding carbide inserts. As you can see, the results speak for themselves.
You can go down to 6 mm tool holders and use carbide on mini and micro lathes, no problem.
The main thing you must take into account is to use the correct size/style/shape of insert for the lathe size.

So go TCMT in the correct size and the world will be your oyster.

To clarify this a bit more, I use a 12 mm TCMT holder in my 10" swing lathe.
A smaller lathe (say 7" swing) could use 8 mm size, and a micro would use 6 mm (which is as small as TCMT go).
It's worth noting that high spindle speed is not an issue with any modern lathe, regardless of size.
The only issue with carbide use is that light cuts generally produce poor results, compared to HSS.
For carbide to work it must do a deeper cut at a speed high enough to get the tip hot - it cuts on a different principle to HSS and knife edge cutters.
So long as the cuttings come off nicely (a bit of heat bluing is OK) and the finish is good, the speed is doing the job.

I generally try to do stuff not covered by other channels, but I will keep it in mind.
Regarding carbide on a small lathe, you should always use it dry, to keep the heat up.

+Steve Clark I use small carbide tooling on my little old Advance lathe (which is as flogged out as can be) and it does just fine.
HSS is nice, especially for aluminium, but it's usually just not worth messing around with when there is work to be done.
I am using Banggod carbide inserts in my hobby workshop. So far satisfied, my wallet as well.
i'm completely satisfied with the banggood inserts, cant complain, but honestly, i cant compare them to expensive inserts but hey, no question that i dont need PERFECT stuff to get around, i can live with some irregularities or something, its good its cheap, i take it.
The coating could be titanium nitrite.
They work better with higher spindle speed and deep cuts.

True. Not everything is wonderful, but a lot is very good. That boring bar set I reviewed a while back is great. Been using it to make the Stirling engine.

Items you can throw away may be OK, but I have a morse taper tool from them which is total rubbish - the 'morse' taper is wrong. It bites tight at the narrow end and wiggles and wobbles at the tool end, so will ruin any cutter due to run out.
I and a friend checked it on thee machines. As soon as it gets side loaded it will chatter in the machine (and ultimately damage the machine morse taper if continued) because it did not touch anywhere except at the drawbar end.
Complete and utter rubbish. So my advice, with ecperience, is don't by from them unless you can afford to dump it if it doesn't work!

I just checked the banggood.com rating on resellerratings.com. There's a bunch of obviously fake reviews. I won't do business with someone who tries to deceive me.
TiN coated can be placed over TiAlN so you can't just say its TiN coated
