I just got a 312 Hydro from my aunt after my uncle passed away. $1.00. It is in great shape and I believe it is from the 90's. It even has the hub caps. It hasn't been started for about 2 years so I got a new used battery from a neighbor and sprayed some carb cleaner into the engine and she started up. I mowed my yard with it yesterday. It has a tiny deck on it, the smallest I'd ever seen but it mows very well. I felt like a kid back in the 80's mowing with my dad's Case.

Great video. I am a huge wheel horse fan, I found your channel when you did a walk around on this tractor. A suggestion for more WH content could be how to level the deck and change the rear gear oil. Also if you have a WH that is a hydro how to change the transmission oil in it, as it is can be tricky. Thanks again Norman, and keep up the great work!

@@wendells3344 actually the front rollers do typically roll along the ground -- but yes, they are intended to also avoid scalping --- check the manual -- and you will find the bracket frame unit on top of deck gets various adjustments that contributes to deck " leveling" - actually the name of the bracket is called the " leveler" -- i have had a WH for 31 yrs -- the deck provides great mowing appearance for lawn -- but you need to use a combination of the proper leveling settings of the top bracket on the deck itself -- along with the lever lift arm coupled with the height setting on the side of the deck by the mower mouth chute -- if you don't have manual - look it up online on Toro site or elsewhere

Great video. Thanks for saving a great tractor! And thanks for what you do.
I own about 30 WH tractors from 200, 300, 400, to 500 series of this same Era. I love them all!
I noticed the grease fitting on the center pulley was missing or worn off. This is typically due to the lift bar not having a washer (or washers) and a key to keep it over far enough so that the bar does not contact the grease fitting and wear it down. I think it might be worth mentioning this, because I have done this myself back before I realized what was happening and why my grease gun no longer snapped onto the fitting and the grease didn't go in properly.
THANK YOU for mentioning the correct pulley groove on the PTO to place the belt in. I see it in the further belt groove way too often...
The belt looked a tad loose in the video. May want to mention to tighten it up with the knob on the mule drive.
I've not tried running a 48" deck on a 312-8 with single piston Kohler magnum. I typically use those on my 400 and 500 series WH with twin cyl Onan. I've always ran a 42" on any of my horses with 14hp or less. My thick grass would probably choke down the 12hp Kohler Magnum. But maybe not.

    • @jeffreydevoti8528

Older sidevalve engines were designed to have high torque and with heavy flywheel didn't get bogged down as easy. Modern engines put out higher HP but less lugging torque. The older machines step up blade speed through mechanical advantage and geared differenicals were highly efficient.
Now with power robbing designs: hydrostatic transmissions, extra pulleys and saftey sytems to stop blades quickly using one extra long belt it takes more power just to spin the blades. Older garden tractor have 23" rear tires that make moving the machine easier as well. The final insult is the government mandated E10 ethanol blend gasoline has 10 % less power and the carbs are jetted too lean for max. power and their not adjustable to tune for best performance AND their more cheaply made, prone to clogging especially with E10 gas. Lastly engine SPEED is most important to power the PTO and that speed can be achieved with any size engine. A bigger engine isn't necessary because at 3 mph your engine is spinning at a governed 3600 RPM.

Title should be, how to install the mower deck on a well maintained Wheelhorse. The one I was just given, and want to remove the deck, seems not well maintained and I can't even get the mule drive off. It's not terribly rusty, but nothing is budging. EDIT: Next day. Problem with the Mule drive is the tension knob must be turned clockwise to relieve the belt tension. Then there's a flat bar section of steel under it, that's big enough to get your hand on, which must be pushed on firmly with one hand while pushing in the spring loaded rod with your other hand, then the Mule drive will come loose. The other problem I found is the previous owner had added a small bolt and nut in front of the 'Attach-a-matic' to prevent the deck coming loose until it is removed. Also, the deck wheels need to be lowered all the way. So I eventually got the deck off, but am going to sell it and try to get a smaller deck. This one is a 60" and is so damn heavy, I could barely move it. I thought the old Gravely implements were heavy, wow. This deck must weigh 200 lbs.

Sharpness and Heat is what causes belts to fail. To address sharpness, check all the pulleys for any sharp edges especially on idler pulleys. To cheat for excessive heat look for areas where the belt is slipped. When a belt slips it heats up and fails. Remove the belt and spin all the pulleys and feel for friction. This would mean the bearings may need to be replaced on the loose feeling pulleys.

He norman i picked up (saved) the local junkers they brought by a 93 craftsman gt 6000,, i didn't want it it look like some old mower, to get him out of my hair he wanted 50 i said I dont neeed it had picked up a bowens 1600 , lost of compression one cylynder, started, the hydrostatic worked perfectly, so they rolled the gt 6000 on my pick up, sent them on their way, decided to look at it more turns out it has the original seat on it sndcitscpeerfect, no cut, little red trim hood slighty bent hell i grabbed a bat ,, the starting fluid sat in the seat and turned on the and the motor turned over, splayed a little starting fluid it hit! That's really strange ----- NONE of my Wheelhorse tractors have an Attach-"O"-matic system on them!

Okay, not so easy, so far it has been over an hour trying to connect the deck. Can't tell what is blood or paint fingers hurt like hell.

You use words like "easy" and "simple".... 😂😂 I have a 520 that I've owned for about 15yrs. While not terribly complicated, I absolutely despise wrestling that deck under and out from under the tractor!!
