So is it REALLY a free house? Technically, you do get the shell of the house for free, but of course you need pay for land and everything in extension to the granit walls (foundation, floors, kitchen, bathrooms etc). Buying land is fairly cheap so getting a house here is likely one of the best options if you want the most inexpensive, but nice house in Portugal. The reason why the local government does this, is in order to attract more people to Gerês. One of the main problems with Gerês is that not enough people live there. This is particularly problematic during winter as most hotels and even restaurants close, which means the economy is entirely based on the summer months. @@ryanast Most interior towns in Portugal have special funds for people wanting to move there specifically, not only in the north, all around the interior of the country basically. But you cannot find that type of information online I guess, your best option is to contact the portuguese embassy in your country.

Great Video! Gerês is close to home, a few more kilometers east, and you would have reached my home town. As for the cows, notwithstanding the size of their horns, are the most docile and lovely creatures on earth. Back in the day, by the time I was six years old, I would lead the cows to the fields. The down side of all the beautiful reservoirs of water created by the damming of rivers to produce electricity, has meant that there are numerous villages, and what used to be productive land, buried under water, only to be seen when the water levels drop. I used the word tiny just as a means of emphasizing the contrast between its relatively small area and its vast diversity. Perhaps the fact I am Brazilian has shaped my perspective over other countries area in an inaccurate way 😂. Brazil is so insanely big that we see almost any countries as small/tiny. Regards.
Guys this is nice. Very clean environment , crystal clear water, mountains and nature. Excellent job. Love the video with the wild horses and the vultures at the end.
This is in fact the most beautiful part of Portugal. But to live here, it's not easy! Of course, in the summer is lovely but the winters are very arsh. Temperatures below 0. Everything cover in snow. You can easily get isolated and remember that there's no shops around. Depending of the place in Gerês, sometimes you need to drive more than half-hour to get to a small Supermarket and if the roads are cover with snow it can be almost Impossible.
Yes . The reason I chose The Sacred Valley of Peru . I lived in Alaska, Minnesota, Maine, Upstate New York and Germany, My body doesnt like the Snow!!!! Here there is sometimes snow on the mountains and maybe a week of hard freeze a year. I can pretty much garden all year and our animal barns are not fully enclosed. Much happier for old bones. But shootdang its BEAUTIFUL where they shot this video!

The cows are from a heritage breed, called Barrosã. Cod fish is traditional everywhere in Portugal, at least in the mainland. Those are called pataniscas.

and people, when you visit and find the amazing cows in the road, don't honk like he did. calmly get out of the car and gently guide them off the road calling them by their names like Bonita, Cereja, Amarela, Pastora, Amiga... or enjoy the rithm of nature and wait... there are times hat i have to go behind them for about halph an hour... you will understand how gentle they are by observing how they interact with eachother, how they wait for the calfs if they get distarcted playing, how they eat... and you can look arround and see how many flowers there are or the snow falling if it's winter... just don't honk. ;) thank you for the amazing images!!

I lived and studied for a year in Lisboa, fluent Portuguese speaker and also a Portuguese citizen. BTW, I’m an American with um coração português. I was heading to Madeira in 2 weeks based on your videos, but unfortunately I just canceled due to the continuance of COVID-19, restrictions in Madeira etc. My mother was born on the beautiful island of São Miguel nos Açores but raised in Lisboa. My question to you guys? Are you living in Madeira or the continente?
Sorry, but you've got it wrong! tourism in Madeira is absolutely flourishing, there's even more flights from Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, just to name a few, than not only predicted, but in comparison to 2019, pre-pandemic times, yes, you need a negative covid test, so everywhere else, unless your test is positive, you don't need to quarantine, not many places are that free to roam, the only downside compared to pre-covid times? night life, still a curfew from 01.00 in the morning till 05.00, but for Christ sake, you have all day and evening to have fun, is just a little inconvenience.

Be careful that I don't think he meant that you get free land in the national park (the land there is very expensive). For example, Terras de Bouro county is inside the national park, but not the whole town. Same as Montalegre. All around the interior of Portugal, the government has various funds for people wanting to move there, giving land, funds for children, etc, but be careful that the interior is very depopulated and things like pharmacies or even hospitals can be many minutes away from there. Although those programs exist all around the country (the interior part), is very hard to get hold of them without talking to the county, so your best chance is to call the portuguese embassy.

I'm not sure if you can build *INSIDE* the natural park... these parks usually have building restrictions. I don't know Geres Park but there are laws that may allow you or not to build if your land is reserved for agriculture. The "Camara Municipal" are the ones who establish where is permitted to build a house or not

The cows are there so that people slow down..........and really enjoy the scenery, and then, suddenly they get out of the way. Those are places that I've been to, you are lucky to enjoy them, and ´´Cantinho do Antigamente´´ at Covide is one of them...!!!
