So is it REALLY a free house? Technically, you do get the shell of the house for free, but of course you need pay for land and everything in extension to the granit walls (foundation, floors, kitchen, bathrooms etc). Buying land is fairly cheap so getting a house here is likely one of the best options if you want the most inexpensive, but nice house in Portugal. The reason why the local government does this, is in order to attract more people to Gerês. One of the main problems with Gerês is that not enough people live there. This is particularly problematic during winter as most hotels and even restaurants close, which means the economy is entirely based on the summer months. Anyway, would you consider a house here if you get shell for free? We would certainly consider it, but let us know! :) Thanks for supporting our channel. We'd love if you leave a like and perhaps even subscribe :-)! Big hugs!

Great video and info! I can't find any resource online about the free granite for the house. If you are able to direct us to the program that would be great!

@@ryanast Most interior towns in Portugal have special funds for people wanting to move there specifically, not only in the north, all around the interior of the country basically. But you cannot find that type of information online I guess, your best option is to contact the portuguese embassy in your country.

Great Video! Gerês is close to home, a few more kilometers east, and you would have reached my home town. As for the cows, notwithstanding the size of their horns, are the most docile and lovely creatures on earth. Back in the day, by the time I was six years old, I would lead the cows to the fields. The down side of all the beautiful reservoirs of water created by the damming of rivers to produce electricity, has meant that there are numerous villages, and what used to be productive land, buried under water, only to be seen when the water levels drop. Até Logo, keep up the good work.

This is in fact the most beautiful part of Portugal. But to live here, it's not easy! Of course, in the summer is lovely but the winters are very arsh. Temperatures below 0. Everything cover in snow. You can easily get isolated and remember that there's no shops around. Depending of the place in Gerês, sometimes you need to drive more than half-hour to get to a small Supermarket and if the roads are cover with snow it can be almost Impossible.

Sorry, but you've got it wrong! tourism in Madeira is absolutely flourishing, there's even more flights from Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, just to name a few, than not only predicted, but in comparison to 2019, pre-pandemic times, yes, you need a negative covid test, so everywhere else, unless your test is positive, you don't need to quarantine, not many places are that free to roam, the only downside compared to pre-covid times? night life, still a curfew from 01.00 in the morning till 05.00, but for Christ sake, you have all day and evening to have fun, is just a little inconvenience.

I am not rich, and I would be very interested in this type of "free" housing and some land. Do you have any links, by any chance, to check and to find more info about this government program? Be careful that I don't think he meant that you get free land in the national park (the land there is very expensive). For example, Terras de Bouro county is inside the national park, but not the whole town. Same as Montalegre. All around the interior of Portugal, the government has various funds for people wanting to move there, giving land, funds for children, etc, but be careful that the interior is very depopulated and things like pharmacies or even hospitals can be many minutes away from there. Although those programs exist all around the country (the interior part), is very hard to get hold of them without talking to the county, so your best chance is to call the portuguese embassy.
