This was so typical. It happens to me all the time. The worst is when in 6 months time it happens again to you and you realise that this is like dejavoux. Great video.
So glad to find another great channel to get my fix of vicarious sailing. You have done well. I'll be watching this along with my weekly rations of La Vagabond Delos! Well done!!
I just found your channel, I am enjoying your videos. I hope to see more soon. Mistakes happen when you are learning. The best ones are the ones that you can laugh about afterward.
Hi Robby, we are so happy you found us, every subscriber counts. The latest episode is out, check our channel and you cant miss it. Have a great day :)
Hi . Known Ness since school days , helped Pete sail Akimbo down to Sydney from Brisbane when he first bought it. Dont have a boat at all now will hopefully get a KP44 / 46 soon. You guys are living the dream , Im just dreaming !
Well if you are looking at one in particular let me know, i'll give you some unsolicited advice :) hope you make your dream happen and to see you on the water one day. :)
Yeah Great boats! We've looked at a few. Still on top of our list. Also looking at a couple Robert Perry boats, Baba 35, Perry 41, V40.. and a few European boats. For now our Contest 31 is great for the Chesapeake Bay. Peace :)
Once helped some mates fully strip down their pedal-operated water pump only to discover the reason it wasn't working was because the nozzle at the end of the water spout over the galley sink had a shut-off valve which was stopping the water coming out. The difference is you guys making the same kind of UE's as the rest of us while being somewhere and doing something awesome!
Classic, happened to all of us in some variation or the other. In a pinch, just stick the pokey end of a screwdriver between the hot terminal on the starter and the solenoid contact to hotwire it. Most diesel (in hot environments) will start up without any other electrickery like pre heat, ...
Really like this one. Because EVERYONE who has done ANYTHING around a boat, car or a engien,- has done anything similar to this. Mistake - yes. Embarrassing - Oooh heck yes ;-) If I meet you in 50years...it`s the first thing I going to mention ;-) You two make great videos, keep up the good job. Greetings from Norway.
Lol. Totally understand that mistake, you wont make that one again. Once we we're leaving the mooring and as soon as we dropped the lines I realized the prop wasn't spinning... paniced and threw the anchor over board so we didn't drift into anything ... turned out it was in neutral. LOL
Just remember the saying that the size of your mistake is proportional to the number of people watching. That's my first reflex, look around to see how many people saw me mess up! lol Stay loose.
I love it. You guys are great. I have done the same thing countless times. Chasing a fault down when just basic operational procedures would've fixed it. Or nothing really broken. Grrrrrr
First rule of electrical troubleshooting.....run through the most simple / fundamental things first. After that, the fastest way to calm your fears is to jump from the battery wire on the starter to the hot wire on the solenoid. If it cranks, you have eliminated the starter battery, the battery ground wire, the starter wire, the solenoid and the starter itself. In 30 seconds, you have eliminated all the nasty problems and can now examine the solenoid wiring and the starter switch (key switch) as well as any permissives like the neutral detent switch. PS. As an electrical troubleshooter and instructor, the fastest way to detect an inexperenced electrical troubleshooter, is when you see the neutral / ground probe being moved (in this case black for negative ground). The fastest way to make VALID checks on the majority of system elements is to test relative to chassic ground so find it and attach firmly to it. Then use the Positive probe (Red) for testing. Exceptions can be the cases where devices are grounded to make them run, like windshield motors on cars often are. PPS....It's well to consider carefully, the practice of providing the third component of fire (ignition in the form of sparks) when the first two are present (fuel and oxygen)! My uncle was once sitting on the engine compartment doors of a mid-engine crisscraft inboard runabout. There was a fuel leak and something created a point of ignition in the engine compartment. When it exploded, the doors came open and launched my dear uncle about 10 meters through the air like depth charges off the back of a destroyer! He survived, but his back was screwed up for a long time! Funny now, wasn't then! lol Love your videos and you guys are great together! Fair Winds!
Nice one guys, we hope to meet you at some remote surf spot one day. Love the video and the honesty. If all goes well we be soon be doing a run back from Malaysia to OZ via the surf and I have been wondering about all the 101 mistake we will make along the way.
Obviously, there is a battery wire on the starter motor and the first troubleshooting step is to verify that it is hot ON THE POST. The second is jump it to the solonoid post to see if the solenoid works. Advice from a lifelong electrical troubleshooter...Always check the simple and obvious things first! Inexperienced people assume the worst things first. Fair Winds..I like your posts!
Haha, just happened to me, boiler did not work, spent hours to investigate, en then i established i forgot to put The plug in. Meanwhile, love your channel, subscribed immideately, claire is stunning!
Don't feel bad, I once thought the starter in my motorhome was dead, took it out had the local garage test it, of course it was still good so put it back in the viehcle still no go, so crawl under it and bypass the ignition, starts immediately and started driving in reverse while I was still under the vehicle it stopped after hitting a building. Problem automatic transmission was in reverse not park.
Oh My God, i only realised Sprout was in forward after i started her up and we were moving forward..... no buildings to hit luckily..... i hope you and your motorhome were ok.
Hey Alex, Sprout is a Kelly Peterson 44. They are a super strong, safe, seaworthy center cockpit sailboat. they are all old, built between 1975 and 1989 sprout is number 87 built in late 1978. We'll do a video all about sprout in a few months
bluewaterboats.org/kelly-peterson-44/ they are well kown all over the world, we often get old salties that row up to sprout and say "Nice Pet'rson, I've always liked those boats" and then they'll give us a story about a friend of theirs that was just fine offshore in 100 knots ;)
First time I panicked because I could not quickly figured out why my diesel would not start. Turns out I did not have the key in. I have a separate starter button!
Just found your channel and I love it! You guy's are awesome. Are you married? and where are you from? Boat looks awesome and would love a tour. I will be watching all the past episodes now. Subscribed for sure. Thanks for the smile to start the day.
Hey Robert, I'm stoked your loving it. We aren't married but we have been together for 9 years. we bought the boat together when we were 25 (two years ago), the boat tour will definitely happen, stay tuned. thanks for the sub, subscribers make all the difference in the youtube game. :)
everyone should have "REMEMBER OCCAM'S RAZOR " tattooed on both forearms at birth. it seems to be human nature to immediately go to the most complicated solution to problems, especially under stress.
I think most guys have done something like that in their life time...lOL... Nothing like feeling like a dumbass!!! I did it with a lawn tractor and my buddy pulled half my tractor and had me buy a $70.00 part and then all the time all it was is that I forgot to put the parking break on... Well after my so called mechanic X-friend put the tractor back together it never ran right again and no one could figure out what he did to mess it up so bad I finely just junked it and bought a new bigger lawn tractor... Yes I felt like a real dumbass and it cost me $2,800.00 the cost of the new tractor... All because I forgot to put on the parking break...LOL,LOL
You 'Strain people seem to have some special travelling gene put into Your female demographic ... No matter weather its a small or a mega channel, are they Ozzies one does ask oneself as an onlooker why one did it singlehanded for decades when it seemingly would have worked otherwise, too .....
You guys brought a smile to my face and cheered up a wet and windy morning in the UK. Great videos. Please keep it up.
Awesome to hear Colin, thanks for watching.
This was so typical. It happens to me all the time. The worst is when in 6 months time it happens again to you and you realise that this is like dejavoux. Great video.
Nice video guys! Have fun!

You guys are living the dream. Love your boat, my choice too. Say Hi to Pete and Vanessa
Hi Rod, Do you have a KP44 aswell? How do you know Pete and Ness?
Hi . Known Ness since school days , helped Pete sail Akimbo down to Sydney from Brisbane when he first bought it. Dont have a boat at all now will hopefully get a KP44 / 46 soon. You guys are living the dream , Im just dreaming !

Thanks mate, yep I think everyone does stupid stuff occasionally... Just gotta laugh it off. Thanks for watching 😀
"Thank God it wasn't me". Had a chuckle at your comment. Keep sailing.
Great video! I've taken the safety neutral only start out of our system just for that reason.
Classic, happened to all of us in some variation or the other. In a pinch, just stick the pokey end of a screwdriver between the hot terminal on the starter and the solenoid contact to hotwire it. Most diesel (in hot environments) will start up without any other electrickery like pre heat, ...

HAHA that is a good one!
Whew! I'm glad I'm not the only one that pulls those kinds of stunts. lol
Yep, I think everyone has a moment once in a while.
Just remember the saying that the size of your mistake is proportional to the number of people watching. That's my first reflex, look around to see how many people saw me mess up! lol Stay loose.
LOL so great you guys! Love it

Yeah i'm a Sparky by trade.

I always keep various sized alligator clips and jumper leads in my classic cars just in case. A mallet doesn't hurt either.

Look forward to getting a wave with you mate. oh god there are so many mistakes to make on a boat.....
Brilliant video. You two will go far and I can see your channel going big. Enjoy ......
