I love Linda Vater. She is definitely the boxwood queen of the south. I started making topiary last year. If you are just starting the Japanese boxwoods are least expensive to start with. I’ve graduated up to a more expensive buxus, mainly because there are better varieties that are least resistant to disease. It’s very rewarding and therapeutic. I highly suggest anyone give it a try. It’s addictive. I’m also propagating cuttings of boxwood. Thanks for sharing! This is definitely something us Southern gardeners can still do in this crazy heat. Central TX, zone 8b.

Love this video. Topiaries are also my newest obsession. Have used cheap boxwoods from Home Depot. Also discovered multiple plants. Found a $5 chamyciperis at the grocery store and it is now a conical shape. I had 3 blue point junipers that were dying. Dug them up, potted them and turned them into quasi bonsai. After a year they are looking great. I've also tried cuttings from my rosemary and lavender plants. Some have made it and are tiny topiaries. You're right this fun, satisfying and very meditative. The news from Texas is very scary. Hope your grid holds and you get a reprieve soon.

I’m pretty into them … I was surprised how much I enjoyed the process and I can’t wait to do more. Yes, I’ve been studying how to do rosemary cuttings and hope to try that soon.

That's pretty cool! I'm still traumatized over the death of my bonsai tree. :D I would be interested in seeing you do topiaries on other types for sure! And maybe a bonsai? :D

Bonsai fascinate me … I would be devastated if I had one that died too!

How are these doing today? I am in North Dallas and am afraid these would roast in pots during our summer!

I lost two of them during the heat of the summer but the rest are doing great! I’ll be sure to post an update on them.

Linda Vater is topiary queen over in OK and she’s on UA-cam. And I believe I learned from her that there are “better boxwoods” out now by southern living.

Here in Central Oklahoma, the best plants I find for topiaries is junipers. I have problems with the boxwoods not liking our temperature extremes.

Interesting and I’m looking forward to their progress! Those days back down in the 90’s felt so good for a few days after those hot 100’s+ temps but now it just feels hot again. Summer in Texas! 🥵

Totally agree they are so fun! I'm gonna 1 up you on the economic factor 😁 I am using my boxwood cuttings as my starter topiaries. They look so cool in terra cotta pots too. Since they are cuttings they have a smaller root system so I can put them in my fancy Bergs potter terra cotta pots, $ saved on plants all went to the pots 🤣

I totally want to do that too! But space is a current factor for me with starting the cuttings … I’m thinking during the fall and over winter is a good time for me to do it!

Good morning. What a great idea for doing something on a budget. I have an area in my garden that a plant stool with a topiary on it where it can get full sun throughout the day as well as shade. I think this will be something that I will try my hand at next season. I am really looking forward to seeing all the updates on these. Have a wonderful day and enjoy these new additions to your garden.
