most people will say he wasted his money, and i guess he did. But most super rich people in his position would have bought a couple of big houses, a boat and retired and lived in luxury. Living only for themself. Josh blew all his money but in doing so he contributed greatly to the creative scene in NYC and to internet culture. He's an interesting character. I see him as both a cautionary tale and an inspiration
Josh, if you are reading this, I am amazed at your foresight from 40+ years ago! I remember watching, “ Launder my head,” when it was first released and not getting the full impact of what you were trying to convey! You woke up so early and warned us of what’s to come and your higher intelligence was (and is) beyond its time! Love you Josh! ❤️
I worked with and for Josh between 1990-1995 at Jupiter (i'm one of the heads in "Launder My Head"). Those were some heady years, to be sure, and while Josh was ahead of his time in many ways, none of this would have happened without the many talented people that worked with him at both Jupiter and Pseudo who shared his vision and built upon it. Personally, I was off and out after 1995 and onto other things, but I would visit Pseudo from time to time which could have been UA-cam if there was more of a focus on the business.
Oh man! Thank you for this! I've been sharing We Live In Public for over ten years with anyone who will listen. Would love to hear that DVD commentary! Josh Harris and his works are required internet history knowledge. WWW users need to know how his millennium project unfolded and how the whole thing was used for guiding social media companies' decision making in the decade that followed and beyond.
Just rewatched We Live in Public and it was totally prophetic, and still is. The glimpses of Josh's genius is just a sliver of what was in his mind, he could have been as influential as Gates if he could have stayed focused. It must have been very straining on his colleagues dealing with the extremes of genius on one end and luvvy on the other.
I love Internet history stories like this that are shown in old analog (CRT, low-fi, low-res) style about a medium that is entirely digital. Takes me back.
Great story telling! I was very close to this scene at the time, as I was a downtown NY artist. I was a resident of the Quiet party, and had a front-row seat to it all! It is indeed an amazing story. Josh really did give us a glimpse into the future that we are all living in today. I have a DVD of We live in PUblic...so no need to enter me into the raffle. Thanks for the memories.
This was extremely well-done, I was shocked to see this is only your second video! Josh is the prototypical Gen Xer - raised by TV & shaped by Boomer norms but lacking their fear of & frustration with any tech produced after 1990. I’m Gen X as well but 10 years younger than Josh. It’s hard to explain the optimism that came with the dawning of the internet & Josh really embodied that at the beginning id his career. I think you capture that well. I’m excited to check out your future content.
A very original character. Thanks. It will be interesting to see if he comes up with more in the way of participatory performance pieces. Or something else equally unique.
Great job with this! We Live in Public has got to be one of my favorite documentaries as well. When you get a chance, check out the books "Totally Wired" and "F'd Companies" -- that era had some pretty wild genius and personalties that paved the way for a lot of the technology some of us are addicted to.
Thanks for the great video. I miss the 90s internet too. Google, Facebook, and other CIA tools ruined it all, but I see this man knew exactly where this was going and where we would all end up. he saw the writing on the wall and embraced it before anyone else... And it ruined him like it's ruining us now. Peace
Other than the slow speed,1990s internet was the absolute best! Wild, non-curated, and access to whatever you were looking for. Today's internet is so lame and boring courtesy of the Millennial hall monitors.
Great story! I had never heard of this man or his legacy before today. “Reality TV” had already been solidly established for several years by the time of the Quiet experiment. Was the innovation or main difference due to the 24 hour accessibility and availability on the internet? I wish I had known about it then! I miss the mid-90’s internet!
I imagine it was a mix of the accessibility but also just the fact that the internet was so new and the hype of it all was appealing to consumers and investors.
I really liked this video, the editing and narrative style and storytelling reminds me of Summoning Salt but talking about the early internet story (which is a quite brilliant idea btw), I noticed you just started the channel, hope you do more videos. Best of luck!
Despite being a channel with a single upload that is 3 days old, I can say you make wonderful content. Well spoken, well organized explanations and research with pacing that's not boring but not too fast. Good visual editing to go with the script too. (not to mention an interesting topic) Immediate subscribe from me. I can't wait to see your channel blow up.
17:55 Is this is the future? Are we in the future? That quote by Joshin really reminds me of what people say about SNSs. But in the future, we might not even know it, since we would be physically hooked into the Ghost in the Machine.
Yep born early 60s myself, and 6 kids seems like a large family now but at that time, it was kind of run of the mill. For some reason everyone in the US wanted to have all the kids they could. There's a reason The Brady Bunch was a popular TV show, families could relate to it.
Always nice to learn about some Internet history, especially about how often an idea can be reiterated before it becomes successful. Was 'quiet' the first big brother concept show?
These is definitely the world we living in at the moment hope the these fella can advise the world on the live show downside for most people seem to be fun of live features on app's
Excellent video. I'd somehow not heard of the guy. He seems a really cool guy. Quite sounded awesome, but alcohol, drugs, and guns - Maybe not a good idea. Sounds like they were lucky it was shut down when it was. Also, I love that 15 mins quote.
At the time there was no such thing as identity theft. So maybe I was the first. Josh took all my talent and planes and then character assassinated my persona. In order to keep my shares I agreed to this bull crap. He was out of control and a created a stupid conclusion to what could have been the Facebook, Twitter, eBay and TikTok combined. He ended in fist fights with artists which is typical when you can’t communicate aesthetically. I don’t even think he slept with his girlfriend. She was not heterosexual, as I introduced 😂them through our mutual friend. and was mainly there for attention. Any praise of his creativity Warhol factory is a crick of shit and a tragedy that left hundreds of my friends w/ptsd and emotional trauma from his activities. I like the way he gets it gets into the fact that he lost his fortune. I just think you didn’t pay his taxes anyway, it was good bad beautiful and ugly times. Ironically. This video and the whole hindsight story that he has, it’s just so pathetic it’s just completely fabricated. He was a freak psycho creepy clown. It was all a losing proposition after 97 It’s stopped dead in its tracks. No growth no tech no talent. Bankrupt! By 2000 Without even informing shareholders of insolvency he After he burned $52m of pseudo investment and delivered zero results. Is this guy cool? That’s all folks!
When you reach $40 million...cash out...retire...get a financial analyst to monitor your money...if you want to create something, talk to your advisor to see if it is a good investment instead of throwing you money away on a fever dream...people that get that much income often use their cash to go crazy...bad investments, insane businesses, and spending sprees... at least put say, $5 million aside just in case...you will thank yourself later for it...
most people will say he wasted his money, and i guess he did. But most super rich people in his position would have bought a couple of big houses, a boat and retired and lived in luxury. Living only for themself. Josh blew all his money but in doing so he contributed greatly to the creative scene in NYC and to internet culture. He's an interesting character. Nice work here. I worked at Pseudo and you did a good job capturing the feeling of that time. Keep up the great work!
Awesome!

I was there! I worked on the Quiet project and WLIP doing the video interactive hardware, and that fishing trip hahaha!!!
Woah, that's wild! I've had a couple people reach out telling me about their connections to Josh/his projects - definitely wasn't expecting it!
This channel is gonna go far. Glad to be here for the grand opening :)
I had a show on Pseudo, I have a bunch of video footage from their Broadway and Houston st location
can i see the videos?
I love Internet history stories like this that are shown in old analog (CRT, low-fi, low-res) style about a medium that is entirely digital.
Takes me back.
I mean the internet WAS low-fi, low-res on CRT screens so it’s not iconic… but yeah it’s cool af
Great story telling! I was very close to this scene at the time, as I was a downtown NY artist. I was a resident of the Quiet party, and had a front-row seat to it all! It is indeed an amazing story. Just came from watching the documentary. I am so impressed and at the same time confused about the fact, that his story is not more commonly known.
This was extremely well-done, I was shocked to see this is only your second video! Feels like your channel has the experience of some other channels with 10 or 12 years of experience. Great work! I will expect for more!
Only 40 subscribers? How it's even possible? The quality is outstanding. Good Job Luke.
And for the soundtracks... I see you're a man of culture 🧂
I summoned the music from a great artist... 👀
“His father was a CIA agent” lmao I’m already intrigued
A very original character. Thanks. It will be interesting to see if he comes up with more in the way of participatory performance pieces. Or something else equally unique.

Totally Wired was great! Will definitely have to check out F'd Companies. Thanks for watching and the recommendation. :)
We Live in Public is one of my favorite documentaries as well.
Saw the doc when it came out and was part of the underground art scene in nyc back in the day- i love that josh harris supported that scene!!!
Amazing storytelling Luke! I had never heard of this before! I hope you're able to produce more content like this!
Thanks, Noah! Really happy with the response to this video so far. Lots of video ideas in the works!
What a wild story. Really makes you think about how technology and always "being online" is impacting kids growing up today.
Thanks for the great video. I miss the 90s internet too. Google, Facebook, and other CIA tools ruined it all, but I see this man knew exactly where this was going and where we would all end up. he saw the writing on the wall and embraced it before anyone else... Stay strong bro, sounds like you understand the situation we're in well
I remember watching that documentary years ago and not believing it was real. Thanks for making this.
Dude I’ve been on the internet bleeding edge for a bit and this was all new to me. Kudos. Would love to hear the commentary
Other than the slow speed,1990s internet was the absolute best! Wild, non-curated, and access to whatever you were looking for. Today's internet is so lame and boring courtesy of the Millennial hall monitors.
This is a fascinating story, and a well crafted video essay. Well done! Looking forward to more vids.
How do you only have 44 subscribers? Great stuff, I look forward to more.
Thanks Richard, stay tuned!

What a wild story! You were right, I’ve never heard of Josh. Thanks for putting this together!
Really interesting! Excited to see this channel grow!
Yoooooo, thank you for creating and posting this fantastic piece. Keep up the good work.
Interesting story. Love hearing about the pioneers of the internet.
Amazing. Well done. Thanks for sharing this story.
I really liked this video, the editing and narrative style and storytelling reminds me of Summoning Salt but talking about the early internet story (which is a quite brilliant idea btw), I noticed you just started the channel, hope you do more videos. Best of luck!

Very well done, thanks!
Incredible work, man
Wish I had been able to see the We Live In Public documentary when it came out. I'll have to go watch it.
17:55 Is this is the future? Are we in the future? That quote by Joshin really reminds me of what people say about SNSs. But in the future, we might not even know it, since we would be physically hooked into the Ghost in the Machine.
Thanks for the podcast. Fun.
Amazing content quality. I hope and believe that your channel is going to be very successful.

I loved this, thank you so muck, Luke
Lovely video; loved the editing!
Hmmm 'Quiet 'is like a microcosm of what social media is doing to us.
I remember watching the doc years ago and then it just vanished. I forgot this guys name but I remember thinking he was slightly ahead of his time.
Maybe a new start?!
Never heard of this, thanks alot for the interesting story and editing.
Great video , I remember the documentary some time back. Crazy outcome but visionary for sure
Yep born early 60s myself, and 6 kids seems like a large family now but at that time, it was kind of run of the mill. For some reason everyone in the US wanted to have all the kids they could. There's a reason The Brady Bunch was a popular TV show, families could relate to it.
Hadn't heard of him before this...fascinating doc!
Craziest sorry I had never heard of before!
Great video, great story!
would love to see Jonah Hill play him in a movie, sounds like it has some great potential
Great video!
The book Totally Wired is about Josh Harris and is worth checking out
Really enjoyed the video.
Nice video- I was there and it's all true.
What a wild ride!
Always nice to learn about some Internet history, especially about how often an idea can be reiterated before it becomes successful. Was 'quiet' the first big brother concept show?

Its so weird how in touch I've been with the internet since the mid 90s but I absolutely do not remember this guy and I only vaguely remember Pseudo.
Very interesting video!

I saw We Live in Public (documentary) 14 years ago.
It seems to be very hard to find these days.
great vid

Great story.
Would love to have the dvd of wlip
Excellent video. I'd somehow not heard of the guy. He seems a really cool guy.
Quite sounded awesome, but alcohol, drugs, and guns - Maybe not a good idea. Sounds like they were lucky it was shut down when it was.
Also, I love that 15 mins quote.
There's also an episode of Errol Morris's "First Person" about Josh
At the time there was no such thing as identity theft. So maybe I was the first. Josh took all my talent and planes and then character assassinated my persona. In order to keep my shares I agreed to this bull crap.
He was out of control and a created a stupid conclusion to what could have been the Facebook, Twitter, eBay and TikTok combined. He ended in fist fights with artists which is typical when you can’t communicate aesthetically.
