People forget how much value there often is in entry level watches. Tim's here to remind you. Great stuff.
Let’s get this straight : I am a Sinn owner and fan of the brand (and previous Rolex Explorer owner). In this very comparison, the Rolex OP is overall the better watch. But it cannot justify being 5 times the price of the Blue Dial Sinn 556. Maybe three times the price, accounting for brand prestige, would still be okay.
I would go as far as considering the Sinn 556A the modern 1016 Explorer. Does everything the old Explorer does, adds a smart date window, has a better depth rating and would have climbed the Everest just the same. Now, check the price tags of a modern 214270 Explorer and the Frankfurter timepiece. Unbeatable readability coming from proper A/R coating and a nice matt dial makes more sense in a tool watch than white gold applied markers and a glossy dial. The modern Explorer looks awesome in high res pictures taken by pros, but the real life winner is the no-nonsense 556A
Please explain what makes Rolex ( I do adore that piece ) three times better watch. Easier. Give me a reason is a two times a watch. It' s not an attack on you or Rolex just a question to be clear.
Longines Conquest auto is better isn't it? And same price or less
@@p5ychonaut it's like comparing Balenciaga sneakers to New Balance. The New Balance will do its job better, and to many will look the part as well, but to some, they are inferior for reasons outside the realm of rationality, entirely subjective, more art-like in the classical sense than technical design / engineering oriented. But that's not entirely true since the Rolex has the far superior movement of the two as well, and that's not to downplay the amazing effort that the Germans put into regulating that ETA movement. There are chronometers and then there are Rolex chronometers. But they are much closer than the price difference would suggest, that is undoubtedly true.
@@p5ychonaut Silly question. All you think about is the timepiece. You don't think beyond that................
@@p5ychonaut I would say, the in house movement and accuracy guarantee certainly justifies extra cost. 5x extra cost, not in my opinion, but 2 or 3x, I would say.
Can we take a second and appreciate that Tim shot from the hip on this entire video in 1 take?
I have a Rolex 36mm OP and a Sinn 556 A, Im thinking of selling the Rolex the Sinn is so good and such good value. Thanks Rolex for suppressing your supply, I did want an Explorer until lack of availability led me to Sinn, better real tool watch and a £4k saving.
Just picked up the 556a. Absolutely LOVE IT!!🔥🔥
To me, wearing a Sinn instead of a Rolex makes all the difference.
My 556 I B is running at +4. For $1500 you get 90% of the quality of the Rolex at a much better price. I still want a Rolex, but I’m very, very satisfied with my Sinn right now. I may not get a nod from watch snobs, but I know my timepiece is Mosso approved!
Haha! The ‘Mosso Watchbox Seal’ (if it were to become official) would certainly add extra prestige to any watch !
I know your model has no date on the dial but Does the sinn have a date setting when pulling out the crown? I read the date model and the no date use the same movement, I wonder if they did something about the date setting however.
The Sinn is great. I prefer the fine link bracelet for it. Gives it a dressy and sporty look. Also- nothing wrong with a SW-200 which is what the 550 uses now. The ETA and the Sellita is essentially Tylenol vs CVS’s generic brand for Tylenol. Same shit.
Just scooped the newly released 556i MOP dial. This was my first 'luxury' watch, but never the less I am blown away! The dial is spectacular plain and simple. The hands and indices are rhodium plated and sparkle like no other, the case finish is perfect. The movement looks very pretty through the back too with its decorating. On top of that it holds time dead on, like +0-+1 second a day. That 1 second could very well be me not synching it to my phone close enough.. I've seen my grandpas Rolex from the 90s a while ago and it was cool, but honestly I like my 556 way more.
Did you get the white MOP or the black MOP?
That's a great review because you're looking at these both watches from a neutral and fact-based perspective. I'm owning a Sinn 556i and also like the OP39. But for OP money I bought watches like the Speedy Pro or the Seamaster 300 Co-Ax which have a lot more to offer than a basic Rolex which is not even polished between the lugs. Cheers from a German living in Switzerland.
These quirky versus videos are amazing! The fact that Sinn is even in this conversation goes to show just how small the gap is in terms of quality and features. Perceived value however, that’s a different beast.
I know it’s Rolex’s “budget“ offering, but it’s still $5 700, so I don’t understand why they think they can leave out standard features such as easy-link. That’s just rude.
Because it can and be sold out Remember you do get 5 year warranty who gives you that.
@@bnick25352535 Most watch movements last longer than five years before servicing, and a service on an ETA is only a few hundred bucks, so a 5 year warranty isn’t worth all that much.
Rolex needs to ad AR coating to the crystal. Even if the dial is more visually appealing..you can't tell because you can't see it! Sinn for the winn!
Brent Conley they should also dome the crystal and integrate them better into the bezel. As it stands, the crystal protrudes above the surrounding bezel.
No. I thought so too, before I owned a modern Rolex. But the reflective crystal together with the shimmering ceramic bezel (on the sports models) actually look amazing. My domed AR coated IWC Pilot looks dull and boring in comparison.
Find a Sinn 556 Anniversary, and you'll find the best out of the 556 range and the precursor to the 556i B update. The anniversary gray dial is stunning and even more cohesive in terms of aesthetic. There's also some cache in its limited edition number of 1,000 pieces. It looks the best of the 556s on the fine link bracelet, too. gives the pilot/tool watch a dressier quality. Funnily enough the only watch I like more is the 36mm Rolex OP m116000-0009 with the steel dial. That is the perfect watch, IMO.
I have both. I loved Sinn but my wrist couldn't bear with the weight of Sinn.
Since the OP comes with an easy link (5 mm extension) and I no longer go swimming.
Sinn sits on my desk, if Sinn could produce smaller and lighter version of sports model...
And one more request, Double Index on 12, it has no orientation in the dark.
Frankfurt no doubt .the only thing i love on the rolex is the dial and handset
I would go with the Sinn here also. Mostly because of the colorway on the OP 39. If it was the all white OP 39 totally different story. That being said I own two Sinn (UX SDR and 104 green dial) and one Rolex ( explorer II 16570 polar). Sinn gets 90% of wrist time
Nice review! I gave my 5016 Explorer to my daughter a few years ago and she seems to appreciate it (she better!). This is a good replacement. I'm glad the Sinn has a no date watch - It's now on my list!
I'm a Rolex fan, especially the OP39 with the Rhodium dial with blue accents. Perfection.
As a German I am torn. Of course I root for Sinn. But I don’t have one. I do have the blue Rolex OP 39mm though 🤪
Sinn.
And after taking a shower, Sinn again.
And a week later, Sinn again.
I love the clear face design, rounded clasp, and the sharp screw guard.
Yeah - Frankfurt!
Fantastic comparison review and an unlikely winner.
The Sinn is overengineered in a way only the Germans can do. Also love the look of it - both stylish and tool-like. A great deal of watch for the money.
Agreed!
- Team WatchBox
Have you had any experience with the AR coating on the Sun getting scratched? It's something I've heard about but have not seen
The comparative dimensions don’t reveal that there is a much bigger dial on the Sinn. The Rolex dial area appears mean in comparison.
556 is my favorite line of products. Own 2 of them and still looking for more
@@mikek6478 Yes. I got 1 with ETA and 1 with SW200-1. Except for the difference in brand, everything is going well with the watch. Both watches operate in a very good range for timekeeping. My ETA Sinn 556 (1961-2015) now has 1-2s faster daily. And the AW around 3-4s
Just ordered my Sinn now and i can't wait for it any longer already..
how much u pai for it
@@Nico-zw9ud £999 it arrived two weeks ago, put it on the timegrapher and it was between 0.4 and 1.1 beat error out. This really put me off and i haven't worn it or even taken the plastic seal off. I am sending back because i'm not comfortable with it knowing and i will not have them regulate a brand new watch that just come out of the Sinn factory. Am i being over the top?
@@musmustafa7900 they aren't cosc regulated so i mean maybe take your watch to a private watch service and have them regulate it for you i wouldn't be sending things back and forth probably come back with worse then what you got now.
@@mvrdamonxy7942 I already sent back and got the red second hand one in place of it. This ones beat error was between 0.0 and 0.1 so was very happy and was between 5 to 6 seconds fast but after a month or two it is running at 18 seconds fast. I think my olight s2r baton 2 with magnetic end may have something to do with this although i wear it on the opposite side to my watch or it could be that i have travelled through two three different airports plus where i am now in North Cyprus we have to walk through these airport style metal detectors just to get into the shopping malls. Never the less it has been magnetised and running fast. I will have to sort it and ditch the olight for a while and see.
@@musmustafa7900 the ball engineer marvelight has anti magnetism and its imo alot nicer then the sinn you should have got that if you do a lot of travel.
I've always been intrigued by Sinn. Their tech, materials, workmanship, etc. The U1 is on my wishlist. Anybody here with that watch and can share their ownership experience? Thanks in advance! Great vid!!
VanCity Unicorn, I have two U1s; a U1T and a PVD U1T. Both are very rugged watches. I once smacked the sapphire crystal and bezel against a rock while climbing along a riverbed. Not a scratch.
I will admit that the most annoying thing is the outer anti-reflective coating on the crystal: when it wears out, it looks like a water spot and just won’t go away. This is something inherent with all Sinn watches though; not just the U1.
I have a 556i, I LOVE It. It wears great, my wife wears It sometimes too. Great quality, and accuracy is insane (-0.5 seconds/day)
Marco Rodríguez Muñiz, my wife likes to “borrow” my 556i too! 😄
I also own a U1- from 2009 (bought as an engagement gift to myself). It’s still my most worn watch and the watch I have received the most intrigue over wherever I go. If you can open up the funds for one- go ahead and make the splash.
I prefer both
Tim, I've bought a Sinn 756 Diapal you've shown in a video. I love this watch, my only complaint is that is not a true gmt, as it is only 12h.
I really like that Rolex and I don't usually like Rolex's. The dial, the red accents, the clean case/bezel are spot on but.... they're not four times better! Sinn for me.
Sinn just needs to make the damn clasp not stamped and i would have bought one already.
Go with the fine link bracelet.
I think a white dial Oyster on a brown leather vintage strap would look great. Not so sure about the raised center of the end links.
The Sinn is surprisingly nice but it's not as elegant and therefore not as versatile.
nordicmonkey I agree, yet disagree. The Sinn can do jeans and a T-shirt more adeptly while can manage dressed up. The OP is perfect dressed up and can manage jeans and a T.
I'm a Sinner!!! 😉👍
I have the OP39 rhodium and the Sinn 104. Very happy with both love the 556I but can’t justify getting it when I have the OP39
Both nice watches. I still prefer the Rolex OP. The case is much nicer and overall it's just a much nicer, more refined looking watch.
Great VS series!!!!! Love Sinn
I want the white dial Rolex to be my first luxury watch (which I'm saving up for), but I ♥️ Sinn so much too (U2 mission timer is my jam). This Sinn model is pretty sweet too though.
I am not a great Rolex fan, but this OP is really nice, even if I prefer the one with gray dial and blue dots.
At 9:17 you say "which this watch is not". Is not what? Am confuse .....
Rolex explore is a better choice, as it looks more sporty and more easy to read.
You are a poet! Thanks for this comparison
Agreed, Sinn for the win.
Nice comparison! I'm a Sinner with a 104. But looking at the 556 and the OP could be a grail
In my opinion the Sinn 556 is the best all around watch you can buy for the money. I must say the Rolex 39mm Oyster Perpetual is my dream watch in the white or black dial.
Longines conquest auto 39mm
My choice is Rolex of course😁
For me, I'd go for the Oyster Pertpetual 39mm over the Sinn. It's cleaner, more elegant, the movement is miles higher quality in finish and accuracy, and we're talking about 904L stainless steel. Yes, it's more expensive, but it will retain value over the long-term. If it were the rhodium dial variant, you could truly have that as the only watch. I have a 39mm Explorer, and I wear that piece more than anything else in my collection. If I wanted to go for something a little more affordable, I'd say Grand Seiko offers a lot of value. The Sinn isn't a bad watch at all, but it's more entry-level. Tim, I know you have had some truly amazing pieces, so I can understand wanting to go for the more fun and care-free choice. A great value-for-money, but just not my personal preference.
I have a 556i, It has a very good movement, not sure yet about its durability, but how can Rolex be more precise?, if my sinn in two weeks its -7 seconds (-0.5 seconds /day)
Conrad Magalis Agreed, but Sinns retain value pretty well, too so that isn’t a deciding factor in my book.
I wish the Sinn tapered there bracelet
They do
i could not wear my speey. i CAN wear my sinn.
I wanted Rolex Explorer. But I don’t like lies. For example in-house movement. Of course it depends what you mean by term “in-house”. I mean that every part of movement has to be made “in-house”. Not only assembled in-house. Rolex is buying most of the parts from Gimmel Rouages. That is not real in-house in my opinion.
Now, for almost the same price I am going to buy Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Date. Real in-house, overall far more quality watch, company with around 400 patents and 1600 own calibers.
So, if I should decide between OP and 556, than Sinn is my choice. The are not playing any game with me and the do really good quality watches...
Indeed Sinn is a nice watch, but if I had shit tons of disposable money, I'd definitely go with Rolex.
Sinn no question. That Rolex dial is beautiful but ruined by the paragraph of text. Why can't Rolex put that on the case back? Plenty of space there.
Mistakes:
- the Breguet overcoil on the Rolex is handmade, really?
- the movement in the Sinn is most likely an "élaboré" grade as can be seen from the Etachoc shock protection system, the top and chronometer grade movements have an Incabloc.
I think it’s just hard to see in the video. My 556i has Incabloc, and, afaik, all Sinn movements are top grade.
@@douglasferling860 that is right
What kind of accuracy should you expect with the Sinn ETA movement?
FWIW, I have a 556i that got a Sellita movement. I’m wearing it every day and placing it face up at night, and it gains 1 second per day. As good as any Rolex I’ve owned.
Who cares about facts and value for money when buying Rolex? It is image, image, image...good review and agree you get much more for your money when buying the Sinn.
I saw this coming
The Rolex crystal is very dull and difficult to read the dial. Sinn all the way for me.
What a great review!
The Sinn tough and utilitarian, the Rolex more upmarket. But then that’s what they are! I do prefer the hand design on the Sinn over that of the Rolex here. But given the choice, it would be the Rolex. Despite not being a huge fan of these Perpetuals. I’d go for an Explorer 1 over this. Also a Perpetual, but a more distinct design, with great heritage.
Germany vs. Switzerland!!
Sinn wins that one for me!!
Hummmmm...... this round goes to the Rolex for me. Tim the 39mm wear very well on u.
The sinn gets the win.
The op will lose graciously.
The only “reason” for buying the Rolex is its prestige name. Take that away and instead compare them side-by-side and the Sinn wins every time.
This Sinn 556 blue is on my radar however I’m just realising all 3 hands are a bit too short
I like the form factor of the OP the most among current day Rolex, but this color combination is cringey to me.
Difficult to compare watches that are so disparate in price.
In terms of actual build quality, they are pretty much interchangeable. The main difference is that Rolex spends at least as much money on marketing as they do on making watches, while Sinn don't even have a marketing department.
I could see myself buying the Sinn. I would never buy that Rolex.
But why
Sinn 556i
I just received my 556i, took a chance partially based on this review and many others. And I'm a sucker for value plays, particularly enthusiast brands going up against the big dogs. I'm sorry, I truly do not know how you can compare this to an OP39. Love Sinn, might buy something else from their line, but this is going back.
What did you not like about the watch? Just curious because I’m thinking about getting one and using it as a daily beater. However, I currently own a Rolex explorer, so I don’t want to be too let down with the sinn..
It is trendy to dislike Rolex for all sort of subjective reason but I will go against that tide, the OP looks well executed than the Sinn in most department apart from value for money.
Ikr? And along with that trend, deifying GS can not be left behind. One could say that the recent popularity of GS is ironically due to Rolex.
@@bannedaccount3752 There's a huuuge quality difference between Sinn and Grand Seiko. Grand Seiko is not in a whole different ball park, it's a totally new ball game. And I generally like Sinn.
@@otobotrecordsDid I make a comparison between Sinn and GS at some point? I was talking about the current and massive trend of hating Rolex and deifying GS, making it paradoxically the "new Rolex". I do not care about Sinn.
@@bannedaccount3752 I guess you didn't. In my fanboyist of moments I jumped to the rescue of GS where it was not needed lol.
@Ali Alexander You must be fun at parties...
Sinn!
The sinn has what looks like a decorated base level ETA bassed on the etachoc shock protection instead of the top or chronometer grades incabloc shock protection don't know what's up with that ... Just saying looks like a base movement in the sinn but it's definitely built like a tank
Sinn only uses top grade ETA 2824 in the 556 series (confirmed by Sinn themselves).
I own this exact Sinn watch and it's a top grade movement and Sinn regulates them very well. All 3 of my Sinn watches gain less than a second a day which is unbelievable but it's true.
Then why use etachoc in a top movement
You are right, this video shows an etachoc in the Sinn. However, if you look at any pictures of the caseback on websites, there is always an incabloc. So, generally it is a top grade movement. However, that begs the question what happened with the watch in the video that has a top grade balance wheel but a lower grade antishock system??
A stamped clasp, as opposed to a cast or machined clasp, is pretty cheap and nasty unless the watch is 20+ years old. Sinn needs to do there clasps better and not cheap out on that pressed metal garbage.
Gus the Rolex is stamped too and costs 5 times more...
@@secretfornow8895 you would have to go back quite some years to find a stamped clasp on a Rolex. They including Tudor, cast then finish and polish or brush their clasps and the rest of their bracelet.
@@thehandseesall i am talking about the cornet logo and even on current oyster prpetuals it is simply etcched (not stamped, but offers even less texture and just as easy to do).
No comparison between the two
Tim, maybe you should not just turn off the light and say, the Sinn has the better lume. Sinn's lume is garbage. Maybe the worst in the industry. I owned the 556 and the UX. Ob both watches the lume was dead after 30 minutes in the dark. Additionally when i bought the 556 a couple of years ago it was identical to the current one with the printed dial but significantly cheaper. They just increase their prices every year without improving their watches. Greetings from a german guy who can not recommend german watches
It's terrible on the 556, but it's some of the best that I've ever seen on the 104
100% SINN.
You need better quality camera, youre great reviewer, but the video quality sucks
Sinn 556i.... Simple, masculine with attitude.
Sinn win
That Sinn clasp is garbage... case is gorgeous though.
I'd get the Sinn too. Just not a fan of that bracelet, it's ugly.
Geneva!!!! All the way
This Sinn model looks like a mod Seiko. The OP39 is as great all around watch.
b kinseb yep and that’s why Seikos are so respected
Nixon Sentry > Sinn 🍻😎
I have sinn 556 and movement mising 20s per day. sorry but its shit watch... and rotor foling off. better buy rolex more money but non nonsence
The Sinn looks cheap...like a basic Seiko imho, not a like for like comparison really
