I just realized you guys are gonna be in breaking bad season 2, Barry season 2, and succession season 4 all at the same time, all pretty much 10/10 seasons of 10/10 shows
It took me a couple episodes to realize the brilliance of Noho Hank, but you guys picked up on it right away. Cannot wait to see the reaction to Gene’s speech at the beginning of the second episode.
YES!!!! My absolute favorite show of all time, and as someone who wants to break into the film industry I feel like this show is going to be one of my biggest influences. SO glad someone’s watching it.
This is one of the most creative shows in years. It’ll get weird at times, which made it not for everyone, but just embrace the weirdness. It’s an amazing ride. A couple episodes in this show are among my favorite episodes in anything I’ve ever watched (and I’m old!).
Finally! I recommended Barry way back when y’all were asking for suggestions and was hoping it would make the cut! Just got to Denver for work so I’m 100% watching this over lunch!
16:55 There's very few gun scenes that have the perfect blend of reality and cold-bloodedness. But that mag dump through that windshield is one of the best things I've ever seen in 23 years of life, hands down.
Barry is an OUTSTANDING series. So glad you are doing this one. Seriously enjoyable. Something very similar is "Patriot" on HBO which has a similar dysfunctional depressed protagonist doing awful things but that you still root for.
HOLY SHIT. YES. This show is so incredible. One of my favorite details from this episode: When Barry mentions at the bar that he "doesn't dance" and they mention "I bet you want to" there's blue and red lights flashing off Barry's face off the dance floor. After the hit he tells the waitress "Im an actor" and looks so satified the blue and red lights from the poice cars are now illuminating him. Such a sublte detail but so cool. God this show absoloutly rocks.
I keep coming back to this show and finding details I had missed at first. Want another good one? SPOILER: . . . . . . . . Ryan banging on the table and chanting "Barry! Berkman!" is what his fellow Marines did when he got his first kill. They bang on his helmet and chant his name the exact same way. It symbolizes how both of these are pivotal moments for Barry: the day he became a killer, and the day he became an actor.
Damn I hadn't even put those moments together but you're totally right. This show is just constantly firing on all cylinders when it comes to cinematic themes.
It kinda makes sense to me now why Maple wasn't laughing as much since she's not familiar with Bill Hader. Those of us who are familiar with his work, and fans...etc, of course found this hilarious cause this is like almost THE OPPOSITE of the characters he usually plays. Great reaction and really looking forward to the next ones!
The scene with the guy in class with the Chinese food was replaying the role of Drexel from True Romance. Gary Oldman played a pimp in a Tarantino written 90's action movie. Gary Oldman as a pimp has to be seen to be believed! Omg so good!
I usually scoff when people recommend something to me, but a friend of mine suggested watching Barry because it's offbeat and months later finally did. And then ended up watching the whole series in a few weeks. Been a long time since something completely new to me grabbed hold quickly. Helps that I also love Bill Hader, Stephen Root and Henry Winkler from various things
I freaking love this show. Obviously many of the show's aspects are played out for the story in ways that are over the top, but in many ways I understand Barry. When I got out of the Marine Corps, assimilating back into regular society was a bit tough, but the hardest was dealing with old friends and regular people. One of my best friends said that I was more of a commodity to some. It took me some years to work through some of the issues one could accumulate while serving, but one thing I was never prepared for was how some people just wanted me around because I was useful. Needed help moving? Chances are I was strong enough to do it myself and not complain. Needed help with a crazy ex-boyfriend? I was probably there with a weapon because I was told he was abusive and violent. Needed someone to roll with you to sell some "stuff"? I was there with something to make sure the meet goes well. Needed someone to be an unwitting entourage with PTSD, depression, and is dependent on alcohol to function to make you look good in front of your Psych major friends? I was there because I couldn't say no to free booze. I was a mess and I was desperate for purpose. It wasn't until my father told me I was something more and that many of the people in m life were parasites. I couldn't blame them though, much as I couldn't blame my own nature. I had to relearn how to be the person my family and close friends believed I was, and hone in aspects of who I was as a U.S Marine. Although I'm not a contract killer, but I feel for Barry. He's from a completely different universe, one that he escaped from. Now he's lost and seeking a home and purpose. The problem is, he is navigating a realm he does not belong in and never will. And it will cause problems. Just like a coyote in a suburban neighborhood. I'm just blessedI realized that before it was too late.
I've never heard of Barry and never met anyone who's seen it, but I trust Chad, so will watch it along with the girls' reactions and see where it leads. 😄
Okay so, NoHo Hank took me a second to realize who he was. I recognized him immediately but couldn't place from where. Then at the scene where he shows the "camera footage" it hit me; NoHo Hank also played Victor Zsazs on Gotham. Once that clicked for me I felt Dumb as Hell. lol He has a very distinctive look that's not easily forgettable.
The 7th episode solidified it as a very interesting show. It's probably my favorite show right now. Darkly funny as well as just really dark. It's so good
Bill Hader had a great bit role in Tropic Thunder ("You SPANK that ass, Les!") which was the first thing I remember seeing him in after SNL. His Stefon bits were always pretty good. Barry is a fantastic show, and it really goes places.
