In an I interview, Tom Baker said he didn’t act the part, he just was “Tom”. I love that the 4th Doctor was literally Tom Baker.

Having not watched the classics, I understand why everyone loves the 4th.
***** You should begin to watch with First episode of the first doctor
Fakir Wumbo
Which is rubbish. And the firemaker (or starter, won't bother looking it up) was rubbish too. Some of classic who is VERY outdated, I wouldn't recommend most of #1's run, but everything from 2 on is quite solid.
***** What episode should I start with? I already tried the first 3 of season 1, but it just wasn't for me. Now I'm too scared to try again, but I really want to like the classic series. As a New-Whovian (started with 9) I don't always get all the references to the classic series, that just drives me nuts!
If you ever want to check out any of his adventures, I'm always impartial to The Pyramids Of Mars, The Creature From The Pit or The Horror Of Fang Rock. Both show off Tom Baker's serious side as an actor and his goofy side.
***** Well I started with it and I'm now at Terror Of The Zygons so...

Putting other Doctors in their place.
Love that line coming from the most iconic Doctor of them all. Go Tom.
+MrKennyWilliams And the Twelfth Doctor repeats it to Doc Brown in Lego Dimensions.
+markzilla6895 It would have been way cooler even if Lego Dimensions had used the 4th Doctor ( Tom's iconic Doctor) and had him say it.....especially since the line is iconic and unique to the Fourth Doctor. The fans would have totally loved it and it would have been totally EPIC. If anybody wants to wish Tom Baker a HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, yesterday ( 1/20/16) was Tom's 82nd year on Earth. A lot of people have already wished him well on his Facebook page and Website. Tom also posted a lovely message thanking everyone for there kind thoughts. God bless.
Well, to be fair, in Dimensions, the Twelfth Doctor acts more like the Fourth anyway
+markzilla6895 Capaldi remind me a lot of Tom Baker
If he's worried about his ears now wait till he sees his 9th incarnation
Nine complained about his ears in Rose. It reminded me of this episode.
Auron12786 Or his 11th's chin!
Actually his 10th incarnation, cause the war doctor was an incarnation. So the War Doctor is the true 9th incarnation.

I love the Brig's "Ah, too late" as the TARDIS starts up. Nick Courtney always had such perfect comedic timing
The brigadier is just unfazed by the doctor anymore i mean he once helped a newly regenerated doctor and the doctor asked how he knew it was him and lethbridge-stewart replied with "who else would it be?"
I hate to be a spoilsport, but they probably dubbed the sound in after the scene was recorded.
@@roguishpaladin They probably did, and back then camera work and dubbing weren't very accurate, but Nick STILL manages to deliver the line to perfection, in the scene and in dub. I reckon that's a pretty good measure of his professionalism as well as the skill of the sound editor whoever he or she was.Back then actors worked with the tools they had and made it work. Their skill is different to actors today, who deliver their performances to tighter constraints. Both are admirable for their ability to adapt to their working conditions, as is the skill of the editors and foley artists, but i think if you asked either an old time actor or one of the new breed to adapt to the opposite style they would find it difficult. Imagine David Tennant trying to play the villain in an unaired episode of Blakes Seven if it was shot the way they did it back then. He would eventually triumph, but only after a lot of takes.
Did you know that he also got to write many of the Brigadier's one-liners?
He came a long way from "Doctor, come back at once!"
I like how The Brigadier didn’t even turn around when he heard the Tardis taking off he just accepted it
well the brig did work with 2nd and 3rd, so he'd be fairly used to it!

Brexit in a nutshell
"Why not?"
I love that he breaks the brick, showing that 3 and his "Venusian karate" aren't completely gone. At the end of the story, he slams his hand on the other brick and nothing happens, showing that the regeneration is now complete.
I now understand the hype around the 4th doctor.
Thing is, he isn't this absurd for the remainder of his run. Here he is at like level 10 kookiness. Later on in the episode he calms down and starts to get more serious.

5 Reasons why Tom Is My favourite Doctor
1.OMG his voice
2.Freakin' Awesome Scarf
2.UNLIMITED SUPPLY OF JELLY BABIES
4. Does what he wants, when he wants!
5. HIS HAIR!
Don't forget the hat!
And the fact that he's The Curator
I don't know anyone that could top Tom Baker's Doctor. His timing was perfect & he was bloody funny!
A lot of people seem to think that David Tennant was better. I don't!

He's still great to this day. He's done marvelous work with Big Finnish, and I'm pleasantly surprised to report that his voice hasn't actually shown that much sign of age. Go give them a listen. It's like he never left the part.
Poirot's Mustache and Bakers timing and wit remain fully intact. He is one of the funniest men alive.
Capaldi almost does it
I love how what the classic and newer Doctors have in common is that many seem to make a list of pros and cons with their new appearance...and always seem to be disappointed at some aspect :P
Except the New Doctors wanna be Ginger.
Yes that is true...I never said otherwise

haha yeah the "post-2005" Doctors do a great job with it xD haha. I also think back to Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor, groaning as soon as he saw his appearance (as he was older than his previous appearance) :P
It is always good to start the Doctor Who journey from the beginning, though I don't see a problem with watching from the beginning of a particular incarnation. Many of the older episodes are missing, too.
MATT SMITH :D
True. Matt hates his own nose and chin, David thought his teeth were weird, and Capaldi had a full-on rant about his eyebrows XD
Ok, this was cool and all....but why was there a BRICK in a hospital lab type room?
The Doctor is always up to shenanigans in there. It's probably his!
Munda that was the doctors lab it was probably something he was doing that only made sense to him
Munda The answer is simple. The brick was in the lab because it was in the script.
Munda for chopping of course
his lab his brick
"He put me in the cupboard"
That reminded me of "Lets kill Hitler" : "Rory, take Hitler and put him in the cupboard." XD
Me too. The Doctor has a thing for cupboards. lol. Love the energy and slightly mischievous character of the Fourth Doctor.
Maybe he got the idear from when he was number 4
The Tardis is basically a large transdimensional organic cupboard.
Oh, I see the cupboard running gag.
The Doctor: preferring the definite article since 1974
Yet further proof why Tom Baker is regarded as one of the best doctors of all time.
He's pretty much regarded as the best Doctor of all time by a good portion of the fans....especially the ones who have watched a fair amount of all the Doctors. Tom's influence on the Doctors in the New series shows just how big an influence he has been, including on the show

Funny how Harry had a couple of bricks just sitting around on the counter in his lab.
The bricks are for subduing the dangerous nutcases. Not the Doctor, though; he’s just an ordinary nutcase.

I can see where Capaldi got his inspiration
There's nothing quite as fun as a freshly regenerated Doctor. Tom, here, just kinda took that ball and ran with it.
This is the only clip you need to perfectly understand the 4th. Recently regenerated, acting mad, funny, Sarah Jane, the brigadier
This is one of the great Dr Who scenes. Clearly they got it right from the beginning in casting Tom.

It's not just Tom, it's the whole cast here working together and really believing in their characters that makes this so enjoyable. Pitch Perfect.
I see a lot of Four in Twelve's toothy grin. Speaking of which, some things the Doctor says at regeneration time make me wonder about Gallifreyan concepts of beauty
Well Tom is Capaldi's favorite Doctor and Tom's portrayal of the Doctor has influenced New Who and it's showrunners quite a bit.
Klamath 2046.
the Doctor is more than a bit vain about his appearance....
Wouldn't we all be a little bit? Imagine that you effectively pressed a button and had a new and random face and body for the next few years. I know I'd be interested to know what I looked like and what others were seeing. Same mind, slightly different personality, different body.
@@colinmcphan I thought that Capaldi's favorite Doctor was Jon Pertwee. Since the 12th Doctor regained the 3rd Doctor's penchant for velvet red jackets or suits. Also, "I know, I know. They'll get it all wrong without me." "Excuse me, but we have a very important inscription to translate and I think they'll get it all wrong without me."
One thing I liked about Tom Baker vs Tennant was that !0th came up with complex sci-fi solutions and made long strategies that worked, 4th only needed cheap tricks that did the job, and were fun to watch.
ive yet to see any 4th vs 10th argument, one demeaning the other and saying why their doctor is better...im sure there may be SOME but I haven't seen any as of yet....and that is impressive in terms of fandom, I find the doctor who fandom to be the most mature
Why exactly are you even comparing the 4th and the 10th?
They are both the Doctor, both brilliant, and both have their own way of doing things. That's what makes the Regeneration gimmick interesting.
Dana Knight That's your opinion, something best kept to yourself, deary.

Aye like that too a lot too. Also goes to show how sporadic the regeneration process seems to be.
Linda Taylor I think it's a side effect of being recently regenerated that the doctor is much stronger than usual in the same way ten was able to regrow a severed hand and eleven had cravings for food items only to reject them

Lol! 4 was my all time favourite, even though 3 was my first for a few years, but I guess that different strokes for different folks applies. Fez guy was entertaining and I watched all his episodes and enjoyed them, but was he as good as Tom for me? No. DT was every bit as good as Tom but can't quite evoke the same adulation from me as Baker as I watched him for the longest time during my formative years. I watched JP for a while before that (hiding behind the sofa) but don't remember BH or PT. PD was acceptable and CB I hated even when he appeared as Commander Maxil. I don't mean to knock CB as an actor or a person, but the roles he played in DW just got my hackles up. A lot of that was probably down to the influence of Michael Grade who publicly stated that he hated the show and very definitely made decisions as controller that led to it's downfall and eventual cancellation. Just to make clear, I regret that he felt that like that and used his influence to kill the show, but acknowledge that when the show was brought back he had no problem in saying that he admired where the show had progressed to even though he still did like it personally. The one thing I agree with him on is how he described CB's performance 'utterly unlikeable; absolutely God-awful in fact' Again apologies to CB as I am sure he has done extremely creditable work in his career, it is just my own opinion that he should never have been cast as the Doctor and failed to portray the role with any strength or conviction. John Hurt as the very brief War Doctor was a very short dream of what the Doctor might have been. I personally enjoyed the one film portrayal of the Doctor by Paul McGann, as well as Peter Cushing's earlier portrayal. Sylvester McCoy's appearance was in my opinion under rated and PC was A solid actor to appear in the role and kept me watching throughout his tenure. Now we come to the latest season. Please indulge me as this is only my own personal opinion and I in now way think that anyone else should be swayed by my opinion. I was excited to learn that at last after the long history of the show that the Doctor was to be cast in a female regeneration. I was also happy when I learned that Jodie Whaittaker had landed the role as her previous performances were very creditable. I watched about 3 quarters of that season then gave up. My problem is not with Jodie. Her performances are at least the equal of her previous work and she carries off the role of the Doctor with conviction and panache, as did most of the previous incumbents of the role. My problem is not that the Doctor is now female I had been waiting for that from the late 1980's. My problem is the shoddy writing! The socially conscious theme is very in keeping with today's enlightened audiences. Kids watch this show, so let's teach them a few good lessons while throwing in a few good horror elements to make them shiver just like the last 56 years, great! But why oh why did you allow the quality of the scripts to dip way below the level of even the Michael Grade years? It almost makes me think that someone high up in the BBC is trying to kill the show because they don't appreciate it. Poor g00d2day, I bet you never imagined some ubernerd was going to reply to your post like this! I apologise and certainly don't expect a reply after five years, but you can't control a rant when one jumps up and bites you unexpectedly! I appreciated your post and now feel a little ashamed for going off on one at a comment that should just be appreciated!

Tom Baker is my favourite Doctor and his ownership of the role from his very first episode legendary, but credit must be given to Ian Marter, the director and especially the cameraman from 1:34 to 2:32. A continuous camera shot with several moves and the actors needing to be aware of the angles, not just their performances. Great stuff.
I like how they referenced the "you may be a doctor but I'm THE Doctor" line in Lego Dimensions when you put him with doc brown
Harry: "No, Doctor. I'm the doctor and I say that you're not fit."
Scarf God: "I'm about to put this man's career in the cabinet"
Whenever anyone says Doctor Who, it's Tom Baker that immediately comes to mind.
1:57 (Okay, Doctor, time to get out of here, first order of business, incapacitating this poor soul, need to tie him up...)
A large portion of this clip, starting at 1:36, is a single take. This includes the jump rope scene. Really impressive work.
Tom Baker was an utter joy to watch in Dr. Who!!! He was beyond adorable in this whole scene.
It gives me a clear idea of what Capaldi's first episode is gonna be like! Because he'll wear a nightgown in his first episode too!
Good luck, Capaldi!
I was thinking that
All we are saying is give Pete a chance.
I meant "Good luck" as in good luck with riding a horse in a nightgown through Victorian London.
Yea, every new Doctor(except 9) has a time where they are getting used to the regeneration, it usually identifies the type of Doctor they are gonna be... I can't wait to see Peter's! It's usually a time where they begin wearing their predecessor's clothing and then they look in the mirror and the outfit they were so fond of moments ago is now not appealing to them... They all have a time when they do that because regeneration is so changing
Gredran Nine didn't have a chance to be seen picking out his outfit, but in Rose we do see him going over his appearance ("Look at the ears...")

Capaldi is like a mix of T. Baker and Eccleston.
With a dash of Hartnell, maybe.
Tom came before Capaldi and Capaldi loves the 4th Doctor and watched him as a young man.

It's been hinted that he will be a bit 4/9ish ... can't wait. :D
Why try to be someone else's portrayal when you can be your own man?
Kara Dennison As long as he isn't 7/9. That would be the wrong show.
Did you just ...
He did, Kara Dennison. He just went there. *facepalm*
oh so he's the doctor.
That face when he sees the TARDIS at the very beginning. Basically, it would be anyone's face if they saw the TARDIS.
His expression when he sees the TARDIS initially is gold...that's why Baker rules!
I always felt Tom looked like a younger version of Jon especially when he still had Pertwees jacket on in the opening episode.
Yes Tom Baker you are THE Doctor and you always will be
Also, you can usually tell an actor's good if he pulls through with a bit like 1:11-1:32.
Seriously! This scene was perfect! Baker is an amazing actor.
2:14 as well. I never really watched too many 4th doctor episodes. I have seen more 5th doctor episodes.
+Niceguy3210 The 4th Doctor is iconic..it's ashame you haven't chosen to watch more of his episodes. Hopefully you will. Tom is awesome.
Linda Taylor Don't get me wrong, I know he was a fantastic actor for the role, but after watching more Peter Davison episodes, and seeing him at more Doctor Who conventions than any other Doctor, he just grew on me more.
+Niceguy3210 That's okay. I guess all I'm saying is give Tom the same chance by watching more of his episodes as well. This way you have given both fine actors the same chance. As you mentioned in this scene it shows what Tom Baker could do with a scene that might have proven awkward for some other actors. If you live in England also Tom, along with Louise Jamison will be at several conventions this year. The fans who meet them always seem to rave about how awesome they are towards the fan base. Anyway you have a right to like who you want and it's all good. God bless.
Out of the entirety of the 50 years this show has been on, I think this scene is my absolute favorite of them all.
I love how the camera cut out after The Doctor counts to four.
Bless you Harry Sullivan.
My favourite thing about this clip is how Harry just goes along with the doctor’s jump rope antics
It's either that or risk tripping over the flailing jumprope! Concentration, my dear girl! Concentration!
Fascinating.
Out of all the classic regenerations of the Doctor, the Fourth was always my favorite--even though I'd never even seen an episode with him in it--not even a clip--only photos. But seeing this video, it has been made official: I LOVE THE FOURTH DOCTOR 💚💚💚💚💚
Ohhh, Ok that’s why everyone loves the fourth doctor.
0:01 Me when I saw Tom Baker in "The Day of the Doctor"
Not fit? Not fit?? Of course I'm fit! All systems go!! (Breaks random brick)
