Shifting sandbars, abrupt shallow water, massive currents and shallow shipwrecks challenge even the most experienced captains out here on the water. With careful preparation, we ventured through this infamous inlet, tackling all these dangers head-on!!! First it wasn’t Cape Hatteras inlet but Oregon inlet and the bridge didn’t fall but was replaced. Inlet is not sail boat friendly. I observed a sail boat flip coming in during a storm and one sailor drowned. Fishing boats that goes through the inlet are keel less so they can run in the shallow inlet. Currents coming through inlet is the fastest in world and can turn a boat over.
That’s it! One of the locals said a boat gets stuck there every week 😧 the channel was easy to follow because the waves were breaking pretty big on either side in the distance, but the depth in the channel was pretty frightening when you have swell and current pushing you around… and this was slack tide in calm weather!
