I use the original mix, keeping in mind it lasts for years. The only thing I change is I throw in a few cups of my Home grown Worm Castings for the “Jumpstart”. Cheers!
Thanks. I’m really glad you found it helpful. Just this morning I found that Jerry made a big poop in the night and the beetles I have in the enclosure were eating it all up. I still had to spot clean it, but they had already taken care of the majority of it for me. For me the hardest thing about it is that he’s hard on the plants, so I sometimes have to replace those. But I do think he’s a lot happier in that type of set up. I’m sure your snake will love it.
Hi! I previously had a mold outbreak in one of my vivariums. I noticed there was mold all over my substrate in the coco fiber and fir bark, same brand as this. I replaced the substrate fully and now I'm afraid to add fir bark again. Any tips on how I can prevent mold on bark? I'm sure it was also cause I overwateree
I tend to overwater too. But that usually wouldn’t cause mold. If it’s a fairly new vivarium it’s normal to have a bloom of mold. That’s why it’s good to let a new vivarium cycle for some weeks before putting in inhabitants. Springtails particularly seve a purpose of keeping mold under control. So adding some fresh springtails could help. Sometimes just mixing it into the substrate kind of knocks it down. A lot of times a bloom of mold will form and then eventually dissipate. I think sometimes it’s just part of the bioactivity. I recently had a bunch of mushrooms grow in one of my tarantula’s enclosures. They grew and then ran their course and died down. Didn’t pose any harm to the tarantula and were pretty to see in the terrarium.
@@WonderfulWorldReptiles good to know thanks for that, I’m not the og commenter but it’s good to have some ease of mind for all of the possible obstacles that will come my way with a Viv. Have a good one man!

That would probably be even better then the compost. Maybe I should learn how to raise my own worms.
@@WonderfulWorldReptiles It’s really quite easy. Tons of UA-cam Videos. Gardener’s GOLD!
Great Vid, im so hyped to start on my BP's new bio setup gathering all the pieces as we speak :)

Thanks for the video I'm doing you tube research to set up a vivarium for a California Kingsnake. Future project :)
Your welcome. I hope the videos help.
will the inhabitant eat the carbon pellets?? (in my case a tomato frog)
what would happen?
The bits of carbon, as well as the chunkier pieces of bark help the substrate drain properly. Ive never had any animal have any problem with it.

@@cringesh1t427 You’re very welcome. 😀
Can you use food grade activated charcoal?
I don't see why not.

I never thought of that being a possibility. You could use the zoomed brand "reptibark"
Could you give me the link for these please

@@WonderfulWorldReptiles thank you :)
You can just use organic potting soil instead of compost.
I’ve done that too.
