I really think The Dude (Josh) is among the forerunners of the next generation of the hobby of reptiles and amphibians. I think a lot of younger people like Josh are fed up with the nonsense of industrial husbandry and are unapologetic in showing that the "standards" in the hobby are nonsense and need to be adjusted. Keep on being great Josh!

Exactly. When I started out as a leopard gecko owner I was only 11 and I had a carpet as the flooring with one plastic hide. Later when I noticed her claws kept getting caught in the carpet and she hated moving on it.
So I switched to calcium sand, which I later learned that even though geckos need calcium, large quantities in sand can cause impaction (blockage) and lead to death.
After that I did a complete 20-gallon tank redesign and I am filled it with excavator clay and installed 3 new hides; hot, humid, and cold.
I’ve also learned that heat pads are not good for geckos, mealworms don’t have enough protein, ceramic bulbs don’t have enough wavelengths and many other things that weren’t good enough.
I’m now trying to build a bio active 40 Gallon tank for that same leopard gecko, but now I’m 18.
      Keep learning always

Ok. I have to be honest. You’ve inspired me to start serious research into keeping reptiles and amphibians. I’m in the fishkeeping hobby, and am a total crazy person about botanical-heavy blackwater setups (current obsession is my wild betta channoides pair in a biotope type tank). But before I nerd out, I have to switch back on topic lol. I’m absolutely fascinated by the similarities between that kind of aquarium setup and what you talk about. Focusing on not just keeping and enjoying the animals… but on replicating the functionality of the ecosystems they come from. Looking at the substrates and microfauna. Taking advantage of those natural processes to maintain an actual functioning, balanced ecosystem in a box. Somehow, I never thought about running a vivarium much the same way I run aquariums. You caught my attention, man. And I appreciate it.

Do you think you will ever start making bigger bags of substrate for larger species/enclosures? The bottom of my boa's enclosure is 6'x2', so I need about 120 quarts of substrate to cover the bottom and give her enough depth to burrow. That's more than 3 of the 36 quart bags 😅 Definitely an investment, especially if it's going to last years and years, but it sure would be nice to be able to buy a bit more in bulk. I do plan on upgrading her to a bigger enclosure in the future as well.
Cheers, and keep up the great work!

Does the New Zealand forest mix that I currently use in my fat tailed tanks work? Personally, they seem to be doing so great that my plants get a trimming now. I've honestly had it reused ever since I rehomed my giant day pair (which have bred too well btw) and it was full of earthworms, earwigs and dairy cow isopods. Even mixed in some sphagnum moss, zoo med repti bark and magnolia leaves.
Sadly, however, they have all been replaced by tiny dwarves that are even outcompeting my wild type roly polies! All that said, should I keep them, or start from scratch again with a different substrate like what you use and add large isopods again? I have a few recent videos on my channel regarding my geckos, and was hoping to get your opinion on any of them.
Thank you very much. And keep on postin' dude!

Hello all, my daughter brought home a Pacman frog about the size of a half dollar. It’s in a plastic tub about 12” long, 6” wide and 8”tall, with a hole cut out of the plastic top. Yesterday, I got frog moss for it and I put a thin layer of my small bonsai clay on half the bottom, under the water disk, then the coconut coir he came with on the other side under the “frog moss” which I wet and squeezed before putting it in.
I know this is not optimal, but it was day one with the frog. I’d like to get the correct soil/tank/water/heat system going but I’m trying to do it myself so save money.
Which soil or soil combination offered here is best for a Pacman frog? Also, does anyone have a good tip on finding an inexpensive used tank which will make this kind of self cleaning ecosystem possible I’d love to hear it.

I would recommend our Terra Firma substrate, we do offer a few kits that will be beneficial for your needs. We have just the substrate kit along with one designed specifically for Pacman Frogs. When it comes to finding an enclosure, you can see if anyone is offering some on Facebook Marketplace. We also have a DIY group on Facebook that can help provide tips and trick when it comes to setting up Bioactive!

@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter awesome! Thank you for the quick reply. I’ll poke around for the Pacman combo of substrate.
LinkedIn and you tube are the only social media I allow myself these days. Facebook and the like started to harm my sanity a few years ago 😂 I was hoping to find the DIY stuff on UA-cam.

Can you keep tarantulas in a bioactive enclosure? I've heard mixed answers on this. I want to give my future Brachypelma hamorii (Mexican red knee) the best life possible and I'm all about bringing nature inside when possible.

You definitely can, but you need to use dwarf white isopods so they don’t eat them

@@baker4132 I was planning on using dwarf purples because from what I've found dwarf species won't stress the tarantula when it molts.
