Is there an optimal daily dose of vitamin D for immune function? | Roger Seheult

- Vitamin D's recommended daily allowance was established based on its role in bone metabolism. It remains unknown whether these levels are sufficient for optimal immunological functioning. A large meta-analysis of 32 studies, spanning nearly 50 years, suggests that 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels below 30 ng/mL are associated with a higher risk of death from all causes. In the context of COVID-19, a large associative study suggested that lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D are strongly associated with higher SARS-CoV-2 test positivity rates. In this clip, Dr. Roger Seheult and Dr. Rhonda Patrick discuss how to assess vitamin D requirements and its toxicity potential.

Whats the best vit d
I’ve been taking vitamin D 3 with Vitamin K 2 and haven’t been sick since and no vaccination either…plus I ride a bicycle 150 miles a week…70 years old this March
What about vitamin K2 combined with vitamin D.
I do this just so I don’t end up having heart problems. Is this true Foundmyfitness?
No matter how much vitamin D you take, you must test for 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels. I take 20,000 IU of Vitamin D with K2 per day and my levels are between 60 and 90, perfect for me but would not be appropriate for someone else. Remember, if you don't test, you don't know! I would like a video that stresses this kind of concept.
Been taking Vitamin D3 for over 30 years now. I've never had the flu, imagine that :). I live in Michigan, so I take 5,000 IUs between March 28 and Sept. 28. After that I go to 10,000 til the spring. My range is between 70-90 ng/ml. 67 and Thriving!
You also are likely more immune to covid than these idiots getting jabbed with the snake oil!
I do the exact same thing, Northern NJ. Haven't got the sweet n sour sniffles yet...
Thanx George. Will adopt your numbers to try. I took 2000 iu's daily but still got the Delta. Now on 5000 daily with K2 , and my Zinc and Magnesium , vit C.
Will switch to 6000 a day now till September this year then boost up to 10,000 .
@@daikayll1897 Did you have to go to the hospital with the covid? Two of my relatives that got it didn't. One other relative that didn't supplement D got covid and died from it. (fat, overweight, ate junk food.)
@@glasslinger That's a bit harsh to call it snake oil. There's nothing wrong with just saying adequate Vitamin D and decent natural immunity provide better and safer protection while minimizing side effects against Covid.
I went to see my family doctor and she was totally appalled that I was taking 6000 IU of Vitamin D. She thinks that's way too high and says most of her patients are on 1000 IU. She is like most medical doctors. Not keeping up to speed on the latest research. A patient shouldn't be educating their doctor on health. A patient shouldn't know more than their doctor.
I would be interested to know about how you would describe your outlook being that dosage. Are you happy and care free, with out worrying too much about the little things or do you feel more ambitious and feel you could conquer the world for example?
Believe me when I say these people don’t deserve their jobs
There's no Scientific Study showing that taking more than 1000 I.U a day is beneficial. There is also no ideal Vitamin D Blood level.
She just hasn't read all the current the literature on D3.
So you're generalising one very small subject and applying it to overall knowledge base? That seems retarded. Your doctor will be hyper intelligent. That's why they're a doctor.
I take between 8-10,000 IU a day, and have done for around 10 years now. It is absolutely critical for good health, in my opinion.
How's your blood levels?
Me as well and I stay right in the 80-100nml range which is right where I want to be. Haven't even had a cold in 4 years
Do you take Vit K2 with it? I'm unable to tolerate K2 so that puts me off increasing my Vit D3 levels.
Do you take K2 for the calcium

I tried sports and physio for a year with very little to no progress until I started taking D3, 8000 IU and 200mcg K2 a day. Four months later the pain is gone. No going back now!
Similar age, and it’s one of the things I noticed after a few months of 4000IU a day, definitely less to no aching joints. Up to 6000 a day currently, as I was aiming for >50ng/mL, and was at 38ng/mL after a year on the lower dose.

Knee pain as in joint? Can you describe it in more detail?
I'm much younger but my weak knees went away after I started supplementing D3
@Bob I noticed that too!
I started taking vitamin D in April of 2020 after seeing one of your videos. I got COVID in December of 2020. It was very mild. After 5 days, I went for a test and was negative. I’m not in good shape and I have high blood pressure. I’m pretty sure that vitamin D helped me. Thank you.

Anyways after going back and forth about me needing to know this information he reluctantly agreed, I tested at something like 9ng/mL or something ridiculously in the deficient range. Supplemented with 10k units a day for a year, through my treatments just to get back into "optimal" range. I'm 39, male, UK. When I started working from home (prior to COVID, in the beforetime) I started feeling tired all the time. Literally all the time. I'd be going to bed just after 11, waking up just before 8 and feeling tired all day. I'd typically fall asleep for 30 minutes to an hour in the afternoon and I'd still be tired. It got to the stage where I couldn't go out after 7pm as I was too tired. Then I started taking Vitamin D supplements. I started on 5mcg per day (as recommended by the NHS), then moved to 12.5 or 25mcg depending on what was available at the supermarket. Within 3 months I was back to how I was as a teenager. I can now be up till 2am every night, wake up at 8, and not feel tired during the day.

If one is worried about hypercalcemina, the thing to worry about is lack of vitamin K2. And if you get that from eggs, stinking cheese and Sauerkraut, you get a bunch of other beneficial nutrients too. I learned many years ago that I don’t get cold or flu when my Vitamin D levels approach 60. I need 10,000 IU to maintain this level. But before mega-dosing, it’s worth asking your doctor to get a blood test (in the US, you can also order your own labs from Quest or Labcorp through online middle men). Based on test results and other information, you can use online calculators to determine how much vitamin D you need to take to reach the 50’s. There’s even a new calculator that will give you a “loading dose” to quickly bring your levels up in a week or two (based on the 30 day half life of Vitamin D, it usually takes 3 months to reach your target blood levels).
How do you order labs from quest or labcorp without a Dr’s script?
@@cindyh710 If you’re in the US you can get tested at local Quest and Labcorp locations. You order through online middlemen (I usually use Health Tests Direct, but there’s lots of competition, just make sure they have lab locations near you). @@harleysushi9163 Actually it's not some graphs out there say 120-160 is considered a therapeutic dose for sick people. The guidelines actually aren't real or based in science they're just thrown around estimates to prevent hypercalcymia. Dr. Sommerville looked at the data they came up with these numbers from and they said it was only 350ng that they saw problems but wanted to be safe and split it by a third and hence came to 100ng as the upper limit. It's not actually scientifically backed just estimates based on certain criteria they found in subjects that did have hypercalcymia.
One of the reasons why it goes down over time is that it initially boosts your blood quickly, which is why you can take 50,000 or 100,000 once a week for a month and get good tests, but further research shows it goes down because it eventually needs to store the excess and that is where the fat comes into play. So it would make sense depending on the individual that initially they show 150ng and 1 or 2 years later at that same dose may stabalize to 70-80ng as it begins to fill up the tank so to speak being your fat cells. There's no way to calculate how much D3 is in your fat cells so blood levels only tell you so far, but it's safe to say if you are at 60-80ng on a consistent basis it's slowly going to build them all up over a long period of time.
Me too. I don't believe vitamin D is toxic at all.

I have been learning about vitamin d due to Covid but then I discovered the role that it plays in immunity and the possible linkage to other diseases. I have had psoriasis for 30 plus years. Psoriasis is sometimes treated with UV therapy which in my opinion points to a role for vitamin d in it’s pathology. I began to suspect that I have some issue with vitamin d metabolism. I first suspected a problem with my vitamin d receptor called vitamin d resistance. I have so far been unable to verify it with measurements because I have encountered resistance within the health profession to even measuring vitamin d levels. I also suspect that vitamin d may have a role in high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and even Alzheimer’s. I have been collecting studies that support this idea. It seems that it could be evolutionary in that in northern climates it may have been an advantage to store fat in the winter. I admit that I am not a doctor and have no expertise only google. At any rate, supplementation with vitamin d seemed to improve my psoriasis.
hey, I have psoriasis too. how much do u take?
@@WisdomThroughGod As I am not a doctor, I started this after watching a video by a chiropractor where the theory was that there is a broken feedback loop in that vitamin d is supposed to act as a negative signal to the immune system. I may have inherited, or acquired, a problem with vitamin d metabolism called vitamin d resistance. I have yet to prove or disprove this. The chiropractor recommended 45,000 i.u.s of vitamin d as well as TUDCA 1500 mg. also Cod liver Oil. I started using TUDCA and only 1000 i.u.s of vitamin d ( I was too nervous to go higher without measurement ). After one bottle of TUDCA, my skin stopped flaking. This was before I could even see a dermatologist. I had psoriasis covering a large part of my body and I shed skin everywhere. After I started using cremes, the red scales are gone but cremes never worked before. I did eventually go to 20,000 i.u.s but that was before measurement. When I finally got a blood test I had 104,000 vitamin d3 and normal parathyroid so I cut back on vitamin d to 5000 - 10,000. The biggest mistake I made was starting before measuring vitamin d levels.

3:14 "The inverse of exponential" is called "logarithmic".
Ha! When very smart people focus on one field. But hey, that is what makes them great at what they do.
Maybe he knew that. Perhaps He just wanted to highlighted the contrast with exponential growth without dropping jargon.
Beside the logarithmic point, I am interested in why that is the case. Since Vitamin D is fat soluble, your body can't just flush excess D3 out in urin. So if I take 20k IU instead of 1k IU. Is the body going into overdrive mode and using as much Vitamin D as possible?
In my head it should go the other way around when you have a deficit, when only 1k IU comes in your body should use most of it fast but when 20k IU comes your body should only use part of it directly and the rest should elevate your D3 level.
Would be thankful if someone could enlighten me a bit more.

I was going to say that in equarorial Africa many herding tribes naturally produce around 10,000 iu's a day.
Logarithmic is the 'reverse' of exponential. So, the rate that serum levels increase with supplementation is logarithmic which implies a tightly regulated conversion.
Did I miss it? I didn’t hear them suggest an optimal supplementation amount..
Well I can tell u from my experience of taking vitamin D, my levels wouldn’t go up until I started taking 10,000 iu’s daily. I have been battling auto immune disease for 40 years. Had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease IN 2005 and MS in 2013. I got Covid and was fine. My levels need to be at around 90 for me personally. That is what works for my immune system.
10k warmer months, 20k-40k winter, depending how I feel. Think I read 30-60 minutes sun is about 15k so if farmers and roofers and lawn people can survive 20k should be piece of cake but take some k2 for calcium absorption
An absorption question: for fat-soluble vitamins how much fat is needed/enough for the optimal absorption please?

I stop taking vitamin d for a few weeks thinking I would get enough sun during this crazy UK hot weather this year. I was super wrong... My bones were aching, slept forever, depression.. after 3 days of 3000 iu liquid version. I am just starting to feel normal/good.. I know it's a hormone I just didn't appreciate how much I needed it

What time of day should we take and with or worhout food? Should it be cycled like 5 days on, 2 off?
That graph of vitamin d level against mortality rate is just correlational though right? We don't know if it's vitamin d causing lower mortality, or if people who have certain diseases which cause higher mortality are more likely to stay indoors (for instance because they are more tired) and so get less sunlight. Or is there other evidence which rules out this alternative explanation?

at least one study published in NEJM reported a study where the researchers administrated a dose of 200,000 IUs. What are your thoughts on this?
Actually, you can count an additional 10ng for each 1.000iu, up until 5.000iu for the average person.
So 2.000iu -> 10 + 2x10 = 30ng/ml
And 5.000iu -> 10 + 5x10 = 60ng/ml
Then you could roughly say an additional 5ng for each 1.000iu up until 10.000iu, leading to 85ng/ml on average at 10.000.
That's the rule of thumb.

I have chronic pain from nerv damage. V d 3 has helped cut the pain and depression. Also take a good multiple pluc. V c and o.ega threes. Really helps.
I use a mix of A, K2 mk7, D3 : 600ug, 90mcg and 4000iu. Works great for me. I do a blood test every 6 months and a follow with a Dr in functional medecine.
Vit A interferes with K2MK7 may need to review how much of each. Vit E enhances K2MK7. Add magnesium.
@@carlsapartments8931 This is a mix designed by a very serious European nutraceutical company. I prefer to take a mix as I don't want to take each of them separately (too many pills and more expensive). I also take vitamin E (4 tocopherols mix in the morning and 4 tocotrienols mix in the evening). Magnesium is part of my daily routine for 15 years (I take Magnesium N-acetyl-taurinate, called ATA-MG).
What are testing for? How effective are all these on your health?
K2 and D3 are more effective taken on separate times of the day instead of in a single dose, Vitamin A is in a lot of foods anyway, so not needed when eating properly.
I think we need far more vitamins and minerals in winter because our bodies lack it in this season...we definitely need vit D, zinc, magnesium, all of them infact!
Since it's soluble in fat, I'd wonder how much fat was in the GI tract for it to be dissolved. This may account for some of that point of diminishing returns he spoke of.
I’ve been doing 10k a day with dinner including some form of fat in my food(ketovore) and get tested twice yearly. My levels are always low 70’s.
All I know is me and my family take around 5k D3 per day and no one has been sick for years. My mother did catch c19 at 66 and recovered within 48 hours with almost no symptoms (slight fatigue and loss of taste) and she previously had pneumonia twice when she was younger. D3 is probably one, if not the most important vitamin we should all supplement with unless with are living outdoors lifestyle.
How much sun per day would be recommended and is d3 oil fof skin absorption better than pills
It’s worth researching but I believe it’s pretty hard for our skin to absorb the sufficient amount of vit-d because we generally cover up our bodies with clothes etc. Hence why some drop the amount of supplementation but don’t completely stop during the warmer seasons. Please do research that though.

9500 IU of D3 with 240mcg of K2 (MK-7) long term. Expecting life extending results.
In quarantine for positive Covid test... symptoms have been only similar to mild allergies so far. Supplement 6000 IU Vitamin D3/day after low (24 ng/ml) diagnosis several years ago. My levels are in the mid 50's ng/ml when get tested. Just circumstantial, but maybe the Vitamin D helped. Also have a few other risk factors, so happy things have been mild so far.
Of course always possible it was a false positive and it's just allergy season starting... few more days of quarantine and see how it goes.
@BPJ Sorry, just seeing this. I did not develop any major symptoms.. Had slight sinus pressure that got a bit more for a couple days and that's it. No temperature, loss of taste/smell, etc. So, if I did have it, it was very minor.... wouldn't have thought anything of it besides the positive test.
do you still take the 6000 ius a day? just upped my dosage from 4 to 6000 recently and have the exact same levels as you had. do you also take k2? i'm not and heard i should.
I've been taking 5000iu of D3 with 125mcg K2 daily for years and my level consistently tests in the mid 50s. I'd like it to be up around 65-70, but my doc says 55 is optimal and advises against adding more. I have darker skin so I simply can't synthesize much vitamin D3 from the sun anyway. Fortunately, I've never had covid and I never experience anything worse than a very mild cold.
so whats the sweet spot for boosting vitamin D levels quickly? he said the 1st 1000iu raised it 4 to 5 points. then higher amounts dont stack on well. what more effective 5000iu or more, or less ever day?

Please how many weeks should I take vitamin D
but the main question is, should we supplement daily? what is the decay of vit D? I've read somewhere that it remains high in the blood for days, which suggest once a week should be enough.
Personally I'm taking 4000 a week.
Yes daily. Check out the dark horse podcast on this issue
Not really.. It depends on where you live in the world, you're skin colour and how often you spend outdoors.
thanks, time to bump it up..........for me.
In Germany, the recommended dose is 800 IU per day. 20,000 IU are also supposed to be take once a month here. I am wondering where this is coming from.
You get 20,000 IU in 15 minutes on the sun during summer. And much more potent form.
If I were to take Vitamin D 4000 IU / day (2000 IU gel caps x 2), should it be in one dose or two? I.E. morning and evening.
The liquid vitamin D shot my levels up in a very short time. My doctor was super surprised
As you age your ability to absorb D decreases I am 76 , I take 10 k combo pill that has K2 and magnesium and my latest test level of D was 120. So I can probably reduce intake to 5 k or simply go every other day at 10 k. I do find it so fascinating that at my age of course I remember doctors from my youth who seem to understand D importance along with treating insulin resistance with a low carb diet and many other non pharma approaches because such drugs simply did not exist nor did all these so called required studies but simply ancient observation over time informing physicians as to what is a natural remedy. I just smile at all of today’s astonishing revelations in a
Generation of doctors about basic ways to keep people healthy. We aged ones are way ahead of you all if we had “ old “ doctors years ago before Big Pharma perverted in many ways the practice of sick care.
I think poverty and sometimes diseases, along with lack of education contribute.
Hi doc! I dont know my blood level, never had the test so i dont know if i deficient of d3 or not. Do you think 5000 iu d3 + 90mcg k2 is fine? What is your suggestion? Im scared to start taking d3
Why can’t you get tested?
Vitamin D and citrus juices in the winter for vitamin C are definite immune boosters.
Can we take concentrated plant defence chemicals instaed
There are a couple of new studies done by universities in Canada and Greece which came out a few days ago showing that Vitamin D does not help to prevent or reduce the severity of COVID-19. I will stick by my intuition from what I know about Vitamin D and continue taking it despite what the research shows.
YTsupporter1 Apparently only the jib jab will work.....😕
well...you need vit d for other stuff than Covid anyway lol. But as much as I know being age and being over weight have more to do with the severity of covid than anything.
I think there are a lot of other studies that suggest otherwise.

And it's pretty clear that they cannot say to supplement with 5k+/day, it's also clear that it's probably a good idea (though obviously ask your Dr. and get a blood test if you can).

Inverse exponential also known as logarithmic
Before being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease my level was 20 nmol/L After taking Vit D3 supplement of 5,000iu a day for a couple of years it went to 199 nmol/L. I have since cut it back to three days a week at 5,000 IU now I’m slowing down it’s at 160 nmol/L.
These numbers are terrible. Your liver is probably damaged.
@like bro I’m in remission and feeling very good. I haven’t had Covid and if I got it I think I would cope quite well. I might add before I was diagnosed with my immune disease my level for Vit D was 20 nmo/L which I was classed as deficient and I was extremely sick.

Optimal Level: many experts recommend a level between 50 to 100nmol/L
Others recommend a level between 75 to 125nmo/L
But some say higher. Especially with Covid around.
Take 8,000 daily if you vacation somewhere with good sun. If not, 10,000 IU daily. This is according to the study "The Big Vitamin D Mistake."
I took my D3 with walnuts and scrambled eggs with lots of olive oil, and a little zinc...all before any caffeine. I will take Mk7 (natto) in the afternoon and Magnesium at night. I'm trying to avoid Vitamin E and Fiber when I take the supp. I bought CHEAP eggs which have less vitamin E, and walnuts are HIGH in fat and relatively LOW in fiber. The E in olive oil isn't significant. (Fiber binds to the vitamins and prevents absorbtion, Vitamin E competes for the receptors) I am over 60 and not overweight. I took 10,000 iu yeserday and it boosted my mood all day in sun-free Northern Winter, Today I'm taking one 2000 iu gelcap and 5 drops from 100 iu per drop iquid D. I am careful to add the olive oil to the eggs after the heat is off to not form trans fat, and to add D drops when all cool. I wait an hour before any caffeine because it blocks receptors for D3. I hope you like my comment!
The reverse of exponential is called logarithmic.
Can you consider the possibility of the human body shutting down your sun absorption of vitamin D as a result of such vast levels of tablet vitamin D intake?
Because food intake without sun absorption cannot do that. Cannot deliver you enough vitamin D.
That's why you have retained your ability to photosynthesis it.
If this happens, you will have to rely on the chemistry version while it is available.
I know Normally it does not happen due to tablet. remember you have to take 100mcg of k2 with every 10000iu of d3. If you are old your skin will slow down d3 production. Other things that will reduce d3 production is bad liver or kidneys or too much cortisol or too much sugar. I don’t think the skin will lose its ability. There are videos and evidence that show that d3 won’t be absorbed in skin at all or that well if you are too fat or have damages kidney or liver

Also, why didnt this vid mention vit K2 , which u should take with vit D, to be sure thecalcium goes to the right places,..bones and teeth?
Also want to share, that the body uses up magnesium to process vit D, so u need to supplement that. too .
