    It’s so nice to see that Folkestone didn’t end up in loss and decay as it once started to become after the ferries and railways stopped at the harbour dealing a mortal wound to the town, My Mother who was born and bred in Folkestone would be happy at its survival, Although I’m not sure what my Grandfather would have made of it as he worked on the Harbour after returning from WW1 would make of it all, I’m glad myself that it has a new lease of life as I have very fond memories of Folkestone.

      I agree with you totally; I like to see need life breathed into a place that's had tough times in the past (even if it does come with a little too much moustache wax!). I like what I see now, and the town seems to have a will for a better future. I hope Covid19 hasn't wrecked too many dreams.
      I'm fascinated by the story of your Grandfather, that must of been one tough life and Folkestone today would probably make no sense, but I guess the same is true of the Victorians who promenaded from the Grand, along the Lees, the ever-changing world.
      Where are you based now? Have you had a chance to see Folkestone recently? We want to head back and explore a little more because it was just so nice.

      Our World For You I’m living in Herefordshire now and I haven’t been back to Folkestone for 20+ years, Perhaps I will visit again when we can all travel for Leisure again, My Grandfather left the Harbour and was working on the Railway during WW2 and yes he was a hard worker on the Harbour especially as people were visiting battlegrounds of WW1 during the 1920’s or the summer trips to Lourdes they wee very busy he said, My Mother’s memories of Folkestone and growing up there during the 1920’s are still with me even now, Yes please do revisit the town and film some more I’ll be pleased to see more.

      Wow - You'll notice a difference, and for the better, I hope (I had the idea you may have emigrated so a return may be a challenge!) . I'm fascinated by the idea of history seen through real peoples eyes. I hadn't considered the 'pilgrimages' made after the war because the dead were not returned, and how that would have focused on one point. We've visited many Commonwealth War Graves on our travels. We actually dedicated a day trip to finding as many of those that fell from our village, just before Remembrance day in 2018. I like the fact that despite the changes in Folkestone it hasn't forgotten the past. Here's to heading back someday soon. 🥂

      It's good news about the audio. It is a shame that UA-cam has removed the function to correct after I have uploaded, but I guess I need to get it right first time.
      Having checked your profile, you may want to check out our video on a local Priory - 'A visit to the Friars at Aylesford in Kent' - 🔗ua-cam.com/video/nlyj37C1bYs/v-deo.html. Also, in the next few weeks, we will have a video on the 14 Historical Churchs of Romney Marsh, which you may enjoy, I don't have a precise date for when that will be ready.

    I live in Folkestone and i have seen things come and go, It is such a grand town and there is so many hidden treasures. I remember standing on the Railway bridge on Tram Road watching the Flying Scotsman come through and the oriental express. Now with the new developments planned i think it will put Folkestone on another level.

      What a wonderful story, one of those examples of good things coming out of the war. A bit of a change from Ontario for Grandpa, though. A big city, capital of Canada to Folkestone. Still, Ontario has a bit of a European feel to it, I guess at the time another outpost of the Empire. Thanks for sharing

    I live in Folkestone and have done so for most of my life. I love this town and it is so sad to see this town go down hill because of the decisions the local council have made by over-charging for the commercial tax rates. As the months and years go by there are more and more vacant shops and with each there has been a steady decline in the town tourism. The local council think that over-charging the commercial rates and turning the town is what is best for the town, and this might be for the short term however thanks to this narrow minded thought process the local council have doom Folkestone to become a ghost town.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 роки тому

      Steve interesting points from a local, and you are not the only one to comment on the local politics in play at Folkestone. As an outsider, I see somewhere that looked vibrant and interesting, a different type of coastal regeneration, and we will be back to explore a little more - so as a tourist, it worked for us - How it looks post-Covid, and post-Brexit, who knows - maybe that will bring local issues to a head. Anyway, I hope you are staying safe & well and here's to a better future 🍻 (In your opinion, what's the best pub in Folkestone?)

    • @maverick23121979
      @maverick23121979 3 роки тому +1

      @@OurWorldForYou Folkestone has been staying safe during the pandemic, we were confused when the government put us into tier 3 when London was put into tier 2 even though we had a much lower rate of infection per 100,000 than most, if not all London districts at the time. Myself and others believe it must be because the Members of Parliament must need some of the Pubs to be open so they can spend our hard earned tax money getting drunk... lol...
      As for the best pub in the town, that would have to depend on what kind of atmosphere you are looking for, personally I like a quiet drink with a good view, so I like to drink in the Ship and when I am with my children I like to have a drink at The George as during the summer I can let my Children play in the fountain outside

    Brings back very fond childhood memories of escaping north London for long summer holidays in Folkestone in the 1960s. The huge funfair with boating pool, watching rock making at Rowlands and taking the Leas funicular. I went back a few years ago and though a lot remains as I recall, a lot of the charming and quaint character had gone and a surprising number of very fine Victorian and Edwardian hotels had been replaced by architecturally-terrible modern buildings - like the Grand Burstin monstrosity - what were the town planners on in the 1970s and 80s? Having seen your excellent video though, I will give it another visit and see if I can re-embrace it for what it is now.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 роки тому

      🙏 Thank you so much - I agree that a lot of harm was done in the '70's & '80's, I think they are working on concreting over the countryside now! Anyway, another story. I think the decline of the British Coastal resorts is a common one, but the good news is Folkestone, like so many is coming out of it. I think the Covid period may have dented its recovery, but hope it continues to spring back. We'll be back as soon as we can. Anyway, take care, stay safe and here's to a sunny day in Folkestone 🍻

There is something in the air here though, maybe the souls of those who went to the 'Great War', only never to return. If you wander down to the Harbour Arm, you can imagine the trains arriving and departing, bringing travellers from all over the continent.

    Our parents had a small hotel / guest house here before ww2 up in Cheriton Gardens. They had to sell up in 1955/56 and take live in staff positions among the wealthy country house families still abundant in the UK at that time. We two twins, born in 1953, have almost no memories of Folkestone at all, but our older sisters enjoyed their first few years here and so did our parents and the extended members of the family who often came from Essex to stay with us.

      We ended up in Winchester, Hampshire, where our parents eventually retired after 4 upheavals/employments following their "Upstairs, Downstairs" careers.
      I was lucky enough to be able to bring our Mum back to Folkestone for a weekend during the 1990's, Dad having passed away in 1971. However, they did get to spend a week at the Grand Hotel the year before he died which was really special for them both.
      I've sent a link to your video over to my elder sister in Auckland hoping to motivate her into a future visit 😊. We had been planning something similar prior to Covid-19 rearranging everyone's plans, but if it's too much for her to manage, I'll have to jump on the train later on this year for some seaside time on my own.
      I'm so glad to have found your video and will be checking out more of them now for further information on the surrounding area.

      Rosie, that's fabulous, let's hope your sister can get here - New Zealand is on the green list, but I know it takes much more than that to make it happen.
      My sister went to college in Winchester in the '90s, and the only time we visited the city was for her graduation. We'll return (Covid had made us focus on a lot more of the UK) , just not sure when.
      On the video front, we've a few more of our Iceland Series to run, and then we return to Kent, and we plan on returning to Folkestone for another look.
      Anyway, thanks again. I try to make each video a little bit better, so hopefully, you'll keep on enjoying them. Take care, and happy & safe travels.

      Leipzig is on our list, perhaps 2022 🤞 We've been to Cologne many times at Christmas, I think it's 11 or 12, but it's mostly motorway/Autobahn from home, but it only takes 5 hours from home so pretty easy 😀

    フォークストーン懐かしいです。20年前に行きましたが海辺の風景は変わって、以前よりも街に活気が出たような感じがしました。

      Jamie, that made me smile - I was an Air Cadet; now what was that saying... Anyway, Folkestone's changed a lot in 30 years, but I guess, as a country, we've changed in that time too.

      🙏 Thanks so much, we've a bit more of the Kent coast to discover, then there's the journey inland so much to see & do. Looks like there's gonna be more UK content for the early part of the year.
      Take care, stay safe & happy travels 😍

      😍 Thanks so much. On the question of Hastings, it's on the cards in the next couple of months. This Friday's video is another Kentish seaside town - so keep an eye out for that. Have you checked out Margate? ua-cam.com/video/gSmK6hu4LJI/v-deo.html that's another cool place to check out.
