You're in the right way! I have seen other comments talking about the environments, I think you should show more thumbnails and how you got there, also many environment artists do most of the work for the final render in 3D with blender it can be a good thing to show and use too ! And since there wasn't any style contraints I don't think that was a thing that deserved you. You got interesting designs on the surface at first I didn't understood why this was rejected but we need to get a closer look to notice important things that I think you've been neglecting. Your drawing skills are okay, the thing you need to get your focus on if you haven't already started to yet are the pitch of the characters / project, when you redesign something you need to have a close understanding of the thing that was originaly created so when people will be looking at it at first glance they'll be "oh this look like this character!" . When you look at your character designs the only thing you can use to identify them as redesign are the names you put in the background, and that's not a good thing. For example, the character Gregor, you have a cool design but it doesn't fit at all the description you put at his side, he is supposed to be some kind of knight and we can see some shape researches that were heading in this direction but in the final design their is nothing that link him to that. It is the same for the colors researches you choosed, it feels like you picked randoms colors in random orders without even thinking about who the character his, where does he comes from and it is the same for the paterns you used. In appearance you have a very cool presentation but once you start looking closer at the design intself it kinda falls appart, everything seems random and it looks like you haven't took in consideration the characters themself wich is a big no no if you want to do concept art. It is a work of design and thoughtfull choices, most of the people with knowledge of the field will see the same things. You didn't do a bad job but you missed the mark with the way you handeled this project. With the skills you already have I believe you can archieve great things and I hope you will continue improving ! You just need to learn the right way to tackle concept art, everybody as gone throught this so don't worry you can do it ! Hope this will help and I wish you luck ! :D

The one thing that stood out to me others havent mentioned is your color palette. They dont really feel cohesive, kind of dark and muddy, and the characters feel like from different worlds. Also the giant has the bright minty green when everything else isnt as saturated. Your colors are much better with the props. I think if you just work with a more limited palette with more intentionality, it'll make a more noticeable difference.

I gave up on art college because of this same reason. Either because they do not have enough free spots or require artists that are as good as and BETTER than the lectors...
My artwork is slowly getting better by my respect for these institutions has been lost forever. Go get a mentor at this point. It is cheaper, they also have connections and often devote their time only to you rather than a whole class. If you are thinking about a schedule and such, if you have picked your mentor yourself, you will hardly want to disappoint them so you will draw alright.

I remember seeing this on art station I think and I really like your work but I dont know if this is the actual reason but its a common reason people get rejected, its either
    1. Style (either not enough about style versitility or its too anime.)
    2. Environmental isnt as strong as the rest.

Its kinda like the marc brunet style , dont see the problem .

    • @Thesamurai1999

@@look-behind Marc Brunet got in the industry over a decade ago when the standards were WAAYYYYY lower than today. Just compare old Leauge of Legends splash art to the new ones. The difference is huge.
However, what this portfolio mainly lacks compared to Marc is rendering and environment.

Probably not what they're looking for

Anyone can like what they like, I do enjoy the presentation myself. I feel like anyone one their right mind would consider rejecting these designs for any form of adaptation though. These designs are probably best fit for a stage show with a high production budget or someone looking for that style for 3D art. I'm not looking to be cruel but if these designs went up against anyone else's I do not think it'd go in favor of these. I'll give a few examples.
For one look at the concept/ prompt text; the designs veer off track. The colors vary, the feelings invoked are wrong, and I would also say none of these represent the characters well by the books or film.
The effort to bring these designs to life would be a consideration. Most of them are rather busy/complicated, specially environmental, with the character design for Grey-Worm's probably being the most reasonable across the possible media types; likely suffering the most in a 2D style animation.
Also choosing to present Daenerys naked/sexualized is risky given her age issues.
The overall style & the way the Chinese influences (which I'll assume were requested) also feel represented in a way that would certainly lose some people's interest.
The designs are also invoke memories of League of Legends. Look at Yordals, Lissandra, and skins for several champions or just a couple skin sets period.
That on top of it all with the art-style losing consistency I would expect critique and a request to revise at best. As people have pointed out standards have changed as many people mentioned.

The layouts look like standard layouts, thats probably hurt you in the long run. The art isnt bad, it's quite good. Weapons look awesome. People and environments are very beginner though. Hopefully you keep improving, best of luck for the future

Less than 10% acceptance rate, they're an incredible artist but maybe just had too many people who happened to be better. who knows. so unfair though

I also get rejected with one year preparation. All my friends that applied were also got rejected, and they all have very fine skills like in this video. Artcenter has 76% acceptance rate but for its concept track program is much less than 10%. No wonder why its graduation works are good since they only accept pro. It’s a shame that they don’t have confident to train their students.

I think this could be because concept art is really competitive and they only want the best applicants?

Ya like they go to college to learn the skill, not have the majority of the work already done. Prestigious colleges or universities are the worst, they rely on talented students to boost their reputation rather than actually be a good school.

The presentation of your work is excellent. I doubt you can Improve that any further… All depends what kind of an industry requirement you pitched for.
Frankly I’ve also seen these requirements to be more hype than anything. A lot of stuff that comes out of these top tier studios is garbage and I actually wonder what all that scrutiny for talent was all about.

It’s fucking art school, isn’t it their job to teach you how to improve your skills? If their standards are higher than what you just showcased, your better off developing a portfolio that’ll land you a job as a concept artist as opposed to one that’ll get you in debt for the rest of your life 🤷🏿‍♂️
