- Helsinki, FINLAND - 1983 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Long Program - Katarina Witt of East Germany placed 2nd in the Long Program, but because of her 8th Place finish in Compulsory Figures, Katarina ended up finishing in 4th Place overall, just missing out of a medal.
I think the reason we don't remember Katerina doing a triple flip very often is because she may have decided to take it out in 84. and although her other triples were consistent, I don't remember her ever trying it again. This is a nice surprise!
Is it my imagination, or did she almost slip at :21? Looks like she hit a rut in the ice, but barely noticeable.
YEP def slip
She really pushed for more difficult jumps before 84, after that the competition field was so weak that she only needed triple toes and triple salchows to win
Witt was fantastic here!
What? Katarina tried a triple flip, while none of the other ladies did? That’s a surprise. She’s usually the one to take the easy route.
that was a very glaring Flutz on that initial combination jump - flutzes must have been so uncommon back then the commentators weren't paying attention...and that flip was definitely two-footed..
katarina was a great jumper however at this point her body didnt have the bends and leans of a skater . her jumps came mostly at one end of the ice or the other. she was actually not very artistic not until 1994 when sandra bezic got hold of her. she was the fiercest competitor but artistically not quite up to sumners level/ conversely roz was not as fierce, however when she was on, she was what the judges were looking for.
Katarina had so much more artistry on the ice than Sumners.
@@rekr3316 I don't see that in any manner
@@rekr3316 Witt was more flirtatious on the ice and perhaps more theatrical - but not more artistry compared to Sumners, who had much better positions, overall carriage, and natural presentation.
Sorry but: no way! 😅 And that’s why nobody remembers Sumners any more and that’s also why she has only 2 international medals. 🤷🏻♀️
listen closely to the commentator during her performance..none other than janet lynn who called roz a skaters skater.@@rekr3316
All these people critiquing her jumps how she wasn’t has good later on.. WHAT TWO OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS DID YOU WIN IN 84 and 88‼️‼️??... HAS I THOUGHT.... TAKE A SEAT WITH THE OTHERS....‼️‼️
Well said.
@@npe1 ..Thank You..
She didn't deserve those medals.
Well the whole world think different…😂
she won the 1st one because sumners was not on and the second one because of reputation. i like katarina yet at this point was somewhat robotic@@toms9864
This is when Katarina had contact. Considering her age one wold not think puberty was a huge issue but the triple flip and double lutz triple toe combo are technically superior to what we saw in latter years which was really the "garbage triples" the toe and sal. She was a competitor, a peformer and used everything her confidence, her body, her acting and even off the ice she especially could make the weak Russian / Soviet skaters fall apart - her victims Elena V, Kira Ivanova and Anna Kondrosheva.
Kira Ivanova was literally a victim. She was stabbed to death. Such a horrific crime in such a beautiful sport.
no double lutz, same with zayak. it was as if they did not respect a proper lutz
No way did she deserve to win the gold medals with this type of performance.
What do you mean? She skated better than Sumners but finishing only in 4th place!
@@rekr3316 I believe I am clear on what I meant. She was not that good.
I’m very happy, that the judges and the audience think different… 😄
Katarina....did NOT win this World's.
I don't think I've ever seen an uglier position in a sit spin. For top level skater, she had some of the ugliest positions I've ever seen.
2 mal Olympiagold,4 mal Weltmeister und 6 mal Europameister spricht aber für sich.
@@Kufencrack Er kann das auf dem Sofa zu Hause besser machen.:)
She was MUCH better here than she was after she won worlds and olympics
This was probably her second-best freeskate performance in amateur competition, after her win at the 1987 World Championships.
Yeah agree. Although I still prefer the 2L 3T she did early in her career over the 3T 2 T she resorted to later . 1987 west side story was perfect for her .
@@davidbrody8713 I agree, it added more variety to her jumps even if they were doubles
Great Triple flip! and a very unusual take off to a triple salchow.:D
It was double-footed on the landing.
I wish there was one Katarina performance where she at least rotated both the 3Flip and the 3Loop in the same program. In her 1983 Euros LP, she doubled the flip but went for the 3Loop (but fell).
Hey I didnt know Katarina could do a Triple Flip!!
She stopped doing them (along with the 2Lutz-3Toe combo) after 1984 Worlds. That's when she made 3Loop her hardest triple.
She seemed fine here- she shoulda kept doing it :) I'm not a skater- but triple loop looks harder than a flip to me! lol
If Katarina had competition who pushed her technically on a *consistent* basis (consistent being the key word), I'm pretty sure she had it in her to do all of 2Lutz-3Toe, 3Loop, and 3Flip in the same program.
It was more puberty/body changes that made the more difficult jumping passes for her to maintain. And with Compulsory Figures worth 30% of the total score, and each lady having to master at least 3 figures each season, there wasn't enough time spent on Free Skating, especially when a skater wants to perform well in compulsories. When Katarina had the 2Lz-3T and the 3F, she wasn't able to place in the Top 5 at Worlds in the figures portion. When the focus was more on figures and less on the jumps, she consistently began placing in the Top 3 in figures.
Her jump Arsenal pre 1985 was so good...then to me it became watered down but it didnt hurt her 1984 and 1988
This is the first time I've seen her do a triple flip! Why did she take it out in later years? This is a much more difficult program than her two Olympics in 84 and 88. She could have kept this up, why did she chicken out on the triple flip later on?
Cause she noticed she could beat the others without sacrificing her hip
She did it in 81 and 82 but didn’t need it onwards as no one else was doing it so she managed to win without it
Katarina composed music under several names such as Ladybird singing pridi dala ti bomcoer to raise tax monies for Ugoslavia to help raise money for programs for the poor. The nylons were designed to show barb wire. Later, Katarina hired a lookalike to do covers. The pridi dala song was to show the confusing inside of Katarina's brain
She sucked . Better in playboy
Katarina's technical ability seems to have deteriorated over her career. Her two stand and pose Olympic wins didn't hold a candle to this performance.
She was at her prime jumping peak prior to the 1984 Winter Olympics. The only other freeskate performance after this one that was comparable was her winning freeskate at the 1987 World Championships. I agree that her two Olympics freeskates were definitely technically weaker than this one.
Puberty/body development is the one thing that hampers many women skaters with the ability to maintain the ability of triple jumps. After completion of puberty, she was never able to regain her timing with the more difficult jumping passes. She lost the flip after this season...it became very inconsistant, and she lost the 2Lz-3T after the 1983/1984 season. She managed to add the 3Lo for the 1985/86 and 86/87 seasons, but it became very inconsistent after that.
@@3Axel1996 she was a real Artist!
@@3Axel1996 agree with the puberty analogy but also - if you look at her main rivals they’re weren’t doing them either and her philosophy was why risk insecure triples if your rivals aren’t doing them which is a good call and it worked for her
@@3Axel1996 She did land a triple flip (two-footed) in the 1983/1984 season at Skate Canada
