when i was 18, many, many years ago, i wrote to ian, asking if i could become his rodie. well, he actually wrote back, and i still have that note. it was so moving and informal. i was always grateful for it. a great guy who was obviously brought up right. still an example for the rest of us - not just of being decent, etc., but just an extraordinary artist
i wrote him when i was 12 years old. Something about thank you for making your music..etc....etc...He wrote me back as well.
That's really nice
"I'm just here in the room with you, that's your problem."
Love this dude.
my children listen to minor threat- they're 4, 2, and 2 - and they enjoy it so much. "rock n roll" they call it. so cool. that work really translates....
I miss the days going to record store and looking through the what was new. I always bought the albums of the bands I liked. I miss going to shows but you just don’t see shows like Ian’s anymore. I always loved the way Ian thinks about drugs and alcohol. Some of the many reasons I quit playing in bands. I couldn’t find people that would show up sober.
This man has to be the most intelligent, insightfull, nicest, most decent, most influental human being on this fucking planet! I think I'm not the only one who could sit for hours and just listen to his wisdom! His music and his lyrics taught me so much! Thank you Ian!
I listen to the Embrace LP most days. Best ever release on Dischord. Thanks Ian
"Challenging conventional thinking about mainstream culture" .....that is awesome!
😊❤...Pail Head...I listened to Minor Threat since I was 14.. Then Fugazi.. I will refuse has been my theme song to myself...
It's comforting to know there are souls in this world like Ian. I love his sense of humor. And how many would start a talk with And if you do not want to ask any questions and be silent I too am willing to just stand here silently for two hours.
A quote I love "Learn silence. And at least with your friends, with your lovers, with your family, with your fellow travelers here, sit in silence sometimes. Don´t go on gossiping, don´t go on talking. Stop talking, and not only on the outside - stop the inner talk. Be in an interval. Just sit, doing nothing, just being presences to each other. And soon you will start finding a new way to communicate. And that is the right way.
Start communicating through silence sometimes. Holding the hand of your friend, sit silently. Just looking at the moon, feel the moon, and both feel it silently. And see, a communion happens - not only communication, but a communion. Your hearts start beating in the same rhythm. You start feeling the same space. You start feeling the same joy. You start overlapping each other´s being. That is communion. You have said without saying anything, and there will be no misunderstanding."
I would totally read any book by Ian Mackaye. He really should.
This is great. I saw Ian do a Q&A at the old Vera project on 4th Avenue around 2003 or so. I had a video camera but Ian specifically requested no filming. I'm glad that he changed his mind on that over the years. It's great that this has been documented.
i also saw him in 2003 in san francisco,,it was so amazing, and he was SO kind and nice to talk to afterwards. he as sincere as it gets.
Love The Vera Project! Happy to find this video of Ian Mackaye- will def watch it later...On our way to The Vera Project for our field trip and to hear from Tim Lennon.
There is no such thing as punk. But there is Ian MacKaye and that's all the world needs.
Wow. Well done. Well edited. Thanks for doing this. XXX
Thank you Ian, for always being a positive role model for folks of every age.
I'll forever be bummed I missed this.
I hope he comes back.
I'm glad I saw this video. You know it's good to just be happy and work hard and live a good life even when you have challenges. I choose to work to live rather than live to work if that makes any sense. This video is great and I'm glad I found it. Being positive in life is a great thing even when things can get bad. I work customer service so I always try to make my day a great day all day every day no matter what. Hope that inspires others the same way. Ya'll have a great day.
So good. I LOVE that man!
Integrity.
nuff said.
I missed this show.
glad I found a snippet of it here.
What he is saying..Wow.. If you actually listened... It makes so much sense...
Cool talk. And greeting from someone who worked at the original Vera club in Groningen/ Netherlands :)))))
When I went to see La Sera and TacocaT play at the Vera, guess what poster I saw there? Yep, I had just missed this event. I had no idea he was in town. FML!
I watched a older interview and it was a bit crappy how close minded he was on things. I really see how he changed and I agree 109% with what he said here and its nice seeing how he's opened up.
Would love to see the full talk.
id love to watch the entire video please?
Lol I guess my question wasn't interesting enough to be included. Still a good time. Ian was awesome.
The Cramps, huh, wow!

This man is a "punk Jesus." The poor thing wrote a song for his mates then the ideas got twisted! I follow the "rules" because they suit me. Straight edge just gave me a goal and made me look as alcohol as a drug. I have been a naughty girl, but I came back to this set of ideas I got hold of at 16 in the end, happier for it.
oh yeah, and well, it goes without saying, but he said his roadies were accounted for, that that sort of thing was mostly done on an informal basis...
well, I think he gave punk the meaning of alternative
Try my best, hardest job in the world!

One thing about breaking edge I have a problem with is when people are dishonest about it. I'm not straight edge, but I support being honest. People who claim they are "STRAIGHT EDGE FOR LIFE" should really watch their words. It's understandable that people change, but you should never claim you are down for something for life when you think people just change. You would think would be more aware of themselves and who they are, or they are just liars were wanted to be part of a scene.
Fuck the job is a good idea at the moment in the UK, there are very few jobs and thousands even go for retail jobs.
why he is always wear this shirt colour plus blue .This time I see combat trousers did he go militant ?
Ian McKaye, it is interesting you got so nice. It is better than my way... trying and trying then being pulled down by the evil.
so, did slc punk sort of base its views off of ian mackaye? 8:04
I don't think "Straight Edge" for life is something you can ever be sure of. My daughter proudly tells people I'm Straight Edge, but I'm older so I'm pretty sure. My daughter asked if I would like it she went edge and I told her to be careful, and not declare she was anything at 13. I like to think I influence her by saying no to booze and drugs in every situation. I don't feel the need to be part of a scene, way too organised for an old punk like me!
weed is a perosnal thing man. I respect anyone who wants to live a life free of drugs. its all your mind. remember that.
Why can't I walk down the street
Ninies
Everyone's a freak, some admit it some don't.
Oh shit! Ian is saying words like "pay" and "make money". Cool.
Punk died the first day that some kid said "punk's not dead!" - Silver Jews
MT is one of my all time favorite bands, but my problem with Ian is that he engages in revisionist history and acts like he was a peace loving punk back in the day, and that is simply NOT true. He led the charge back in the day for invading NYC and starting fights with NY punks and skins. Ian was vicious in his youth, and I don't understand why he won't simply own that.
So he was financially comfortable and grew up in a healthy environment. 'didnt feel the need'? Of course not, the need to self medicate is almost entirely born of abuse and alienation. How could he not make that point? For s'one so articulate he lacks empathy that a human of age ,experience and observation should have learned
He quite literally mentioned not having enough money to go to college in this video
Personally I think weed can be very bad for you, lots of cases of child abuse involve a stoner, I think it twists people. I have heard young men cough all day and are stoned all day and old mate of mine have lung problems. If you can have the odd spliff good luck but most people are better off without it.
