Where was Kanazawa Hirokazu shihan? I'd known him as well as a couple of the men featured here, since 1971 after meeting him at the Crystal Palace in London and assisted him in a number of his training sessions in the south of the UK over quite a few years. The last time we met was just outside Milton Keynes in around 2005 and I was proud to call him my friend. He had an unnerving control over his qi and had a story about how, when young, somebody was contemplating pushing him into a swimming pool whilst Hiro was not looking. Without turning around, he told the chap that it might be better for him were he not to try anything. Hiro was god-like to all of his students and I was deeply saddened when he died just over three years ago.
Terry O'Neill is somebody also worth a place on this list - a phenomenal karateka.

@@brucelevine6517 frank was a scary fighting machine at an entirely different level than most other competitors. I wish I would be able to see a match between Frank Smith and Lyoto Machida with them both in their prime. It can never happen; they are from different eras but that would have been one hell of a match. I was in a class taught by Nishiyama at the annual San Diego summer class. Frank Smith was called on to free spar. It was so violent that my girlfriend started crying and she wasn't prone to cry. I enjoyed it and was happy that I didn't have to go up against him. She would have really cried had he kicked my ass all over the place. But I was a kid so he might have given me a break, maybe and not destroyed me.

This list sucks. Shiina in the top 5? Really? Kanazawa, Tanaka, Enoeda, Kagawa, Shirai, Yahara, Kase, Yamamoto, Kawawada, etc., all much better. Those I have named are also superior to Imamura. Your video is named top 5 best MASTERS, but then you focus on shiai results. Competition is a game that takes some of karate´s techniques and spirit, in a controlled environment, under safety rules. Competition is not equivalent to karate.

Mr. Pinto, as a American Shotokan Karate Instructor for 51 years, I sincerely Thank You for your very knowledgeable comment as to this videos list of who is the Top 5 Shotokan "Masters". During the late 1960's I had the honor of training under Shihan Ohshima. Later in life, I attended Yudansha grade only seminars conducted by the late Shihan Mori of New York City. (I am a New Yorker by birth). I began my Shotokan training in 1961 at 16 years of age. I am a Senior Citizen now, but I am in good health, and I stay physically fit. I am still instructing twice weekly. Again, I send You my heartfelt Thank You for Your impressive input concerning this video. OSU!

Completely agree. I knew Kanazawa Hirokazu as a friend, met Tanaka once or twice and Enoeda Keinosuke several times in the early/mid seventies. Both were real 'masters' of their craft. The others you mention I know only by reputation but going by that, I have to say that you're right. I also deplore the way competition karate has spoiled the art, taking it down to a level I'm not longer interested in practising it after more than 50 years of enjoyment.
