Hotton Sensei, is under rated, his philosophy on Karate, movement, breathing concepts, the inside feeling is revolutionary. The way he explains being soft within your technique, mixing hard and soft evenly within his technique. Most excellent teacher he is
@Real Aiglon I know a number of people who don't think much of Hotton. However, I've been his Uki in several trainings and he hits you with 100% of his 130 pounds.
@Real Aiglon If instructors hit their students with full force, they wouldn't have students left to teach. Anyone, and especially an experienced karate-ka can feel the energy coming at them - his was exceptional.
I don't think he does anything revolutionary. But he is one of the best to explain the inside feeling. And because this is the fundamental of karate, he is exceptional. As a French karateka, he is someone I enjoy to listen even if I never meet him.
All are amazing practitioners and we are so fortunate to learn from them. I have been very fortunate to train with Kanazawa Kancho (and his father Hirokazu, many times) and Naka Shihan, for a three day seminar. But after almost 35 years of training, i have trained with many of the greatest masters. My teacher (Ozawa Osamu) was a pupil of Funakoshi Gichin and started his training in 1938. I started at a very good time, when many were still living. I trained with Ozawa Shihan for 12 years, until his untimely passing. Many masters i have trained with, were from other styles of Karate. The journey continues...
I agree they are all amazing dedicated Karataka's. I train under Sensei Bertel and he is by far better than Kanazawa Kancho. Sensei Bertel is far ahead of his time
I place each of them on the same level, equally. Each one brings a unique, deep awareness, and profound insight for us to learn from. Respect to these warriors.

I did 2 separate 7 hours a day week long courses in the 70s under.Enoeda,Kanazawa, kawasoe and not sure of spelling ,Ochi. You don't realise how much you improve on that sort of training till you go back to your regular dojo. I did not feel any different, but the guys at my dojo I sparred with told me they really noticed the difference. I was lucky I could get the time off work and pay for both week long courses all those years ago.
Well done sensei bertal, great that you are in this blog and so you should be. Your teachings have made me adapt well in the security industry, I have been able to handle conflict where a wack to the face or body is not so bad had I not fully defended myself. Thanks osu
I have traveled around the world and had the good fortune to meet so many very skillful karate practitioners all great in their own way; Mikami, Nishiyama, Ubl, Ushiro, Aoki etc. . At some level after 4-5 decades of practice, your karate becomes unique - a testament of a lifetime journey. You cannot really compare for example the karate of Nishiyama and Asia or to rate which is better because at that level the comparison is no longer relevant - both born from the shotokan yet so very different and brilliant in their own unique way, the product of a personal and mindful investigation. I have tried to uplift my practice from both. What we can do is learn from all our shared time together on this planet and honor each individual endeavor in the sentiment of the Dojo Kun with Character, Sincerity, Effort, Etiquette and Self-Control - because well, that was a lesson too. I like Funakoshi sensei's idea of 5th dan being the last rank. It implies that you never arrive - that in actuality you are never the "master". Like all mindful endeavors it is just a humble journey, no comparison to be made only the observed footprint of an authentic practice that has spanned a lifetime. But thank you for including me in this list.

Sadly, he has returned to seclusion and solo training since the closing of his dojo and the subsequent pandemic we are now experiencing. Katsumata sensei from Canada is another reclusive teacher who would belong on your lists. With that said, I do like the several videos I have watched that you have made. Master Tanaka is never a show off. That shows the great level and maturity of the karate pracritioner. Master bertel is totally a pleasure to watch practicing. Speed and technique are totally mind blowing. Lastly, master hotton, I love his insights and the way he teaches full of philosophy and value without leaving the impecable technique of a grand master. These are my three favorite modern role models in karate
Sensei Lavorato, like sensei Kase, his master, he is very efficient even if it seems basic! Feeling his power (like being punched by a train) and technic is incredible!

Kyokushin is Korean not Japanese. Noticed in full contact kumite they do not punch with full kime to the body, it seems like boxing. In Shotokan we practise to hit with full force using your whole body to push the technique through the body out the other side , this is devastating to the recipient and what sets Karate apart, hence non contact in our kumite..
I Had the chance to train maybe 10 times with Lavorato , and 4 times with Naka ( Jka spring camp, his dojo, and 1 stage in paris ) . And you lear so much every time , there is something you cannot really catch in video , the kime , the presence,Its great ... Even if they teach very differents things. . I'm sure all those sensei on this list are equally good in their field
The Gi makes a tremendous difference to the sound. Way back in the 70s I bought a Tokaido gi.It was expensive ( about £50 I think ) a lot of money back then .But the crack I got out of it on blocks and punches was deeply satisfying..I still have in 2021.But stopped training in 1980 .Wonder what they cost now.

Szanowny Panie. Mily przyjacielu. Patrząc i oglądając technike ktora pokazujesz okazuje ona bardzo istotny spryt i wartość ruchu w myśl uderzenia które nastąpi. Try Tsutomu Ohshima-sensei. If you REALLY want to learn Funakoshi-sensei's KARATE, not just the stuff people THINK is his Karate, HE is the guy to find. And yes, his stuff WORKS! It's REAL FIGHT Karate, not tournament Karate ... There was an old interview with Kanazawa Hirokazu-sensei that mentioned him - he was telling a kajukenbo guy that Ohshima-sensei was at a much higher level than even he. A real national treasure!

Yeah so i'm training Oyama style and for the first years it was just passion now I have bronze belt and I became trainer. Karate is something very important for me now and I wish I could be like them
The Oyama system is inferior friend. They only punch to body and kick to face. The exact opposite of what should happen if you are attacked. Think about it

@@FreeCopyrightMusic001 If anything Mario Higaonna belongs to the older generation. He’s in his 80s now and has been training traditional Okinawan Karate since his youth. I don’t think any modern Karateka have his level of conditioning or mastery yet.
@@ninthkaikan1544 YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT KANAZAWA HAPPENS TO BE HIGAONNA'S SENPAI in terms of age. Only Kanazawa is worthy of being called a Top Master in this list, the rest are just good, not nearly the top. Naka is getting there but still some way to go - the rest are decent teachers.
@@toraguchitoraguchi9154 There is a wide gap between Nobuaki Kanazawa and his father Hirokazu Kanazawa.
I was extremely surprised to not see Gichin Funakoshi mentioned.
Osu ...... Respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Good
Обожаю карате
That first guy, #5, awesome how u can hear the snap in his strikes even though was just demo

Bertel is incredible !!!
Szanowny Panie.
Mily przyjacielu.
Uderzenie powoduje odebranie oddechu i silny ból w okolicach żołądka i przepony.
Potrafię uczynić z mojego ciała rzeczy rzeczywiście istotne lecz patrząc na mistrza jestem pełen podziwu ile można zyskać oglądając Cie na monitorze...
Bardzo bym prosił o częstsze okazywanie technik Twojego okazu.
Pozdrawiam Cie serdecznie.
Great sir
Frank Brennan from the UK and Kagawa sensei as well. Many many many

And Masao Kagawa?
Way of empty hands....
Truly inspiring..
wOw! one the greatest fighter from shotokan karate especially Andre Bertel as if Jeff Speakman will move fast. But! nothing really can match the speed and agility of my idol Bruce Lee 🙂 🇵🇭🤜☯️🤛🇯🇵
A real national treasure!
honorable mention Keiji Tomiyama 😉
What about Morio Higaonna sensei
What sort of master would you classify him to be? No intentions of conflict, just a question from a Goju Ryu practitioner😃
Respect et considération 🙏 🙏 🙏 ❤️ 🤗 🤗 🤗 !... Oss 🙏 !

so no master from a kyokushin based karate style made it onto this list?
All Shotokan from what I can see, by any measure this list is limited
Kyokushinkaikan Karate 👍
Naka Tatsuya and Kanazawa are also a movie star.
They played in several Japanese Action movies.
Think about it
@@joereidy5732 but i'm training bunkai also on these karate lessons which are techniques that are used to protect yourself, and it is very brutal form of self defence where you poke eye for example or throw to deal damage
@@dominatorkozaczkins640 Eh, get into a better system my friend. The more time you spend doing Oyama's system the more you will have to defend it...time equal's loyalty
@@joereidy5732 i'm not saying that you aren't right but I just like what I am doing it's all karate is just an art for me and every style Has its own interpretation and this is what i like about it
@@dominatorkozaczkins640 If you have looked around and you think that you are training in the best system then keep dong it. But...if you are wrong you will have to unlearn everything you are currently learning at a later date...or at least much of it. ...Up to you

if any master's black belt's colour starts fading, then it's a sign of 'Real Danger'.
#2👍
Harada, Suzuki, Enoeda, Kanazawa Hirokazu, Jon Bluming from my time the best (UK)
No Frank Brennan???

How do you feel about Jeff Speakman? He'd definitely be in the top for me
The rick guy has the speed of light
Just "Masters" of Shotokan...
kanezawa is kyokushin
@@tsatria4862 clearly shotokan, dude. he's the kancho of SKIF. and the eldest son of hirokazu kanazawa, founder of SKIF

Unless this is limited to specific style(s) of karate, this list is woefully incomplete without Kancho Joko Ninomiya. His intuitive understanding and incorporation of physics and body mechanics into every technique in Enshin Karate are perfection.
Andre Bertel owes his success to Tetsuhiko Asai and Asai-ryu Karate. Mostly for putting back fluidity into Shotokan.

Where is the "Sensei Morio Higoanna"?
I think these masters belong to the modern generation
The term master is over the top in any walk of life, but when it comes to a high standard of Karate both Mario Higaonna and Hirokazu Kanazawa are on a higher level than any of the above Sensei. Having said that I don't think any of them would disagree with that statement, maybe bar one.
@@spirgtudsrubec7776 Why anybody would consider Nobuaki Kanazawa a "Top Master" but not even mention his father, is beyond me.
