This is, by far, the simplest and most elegant way to eliminate ambient sound from voice recordings I've come across. It did make my interviewee's voice a tad weird, (a sharp, sort of tinny sound on the ends of words) but I was able to clean up the vocals to perfection with Premiere's Parametric Equalizer filter afterwards. Thank you so much!
Yes, simple and elegant. I was filming at a Shakespeare play performed in an open-air barn in Texas in August. The barn holds about 100 in the audience. They had swamp cooler fans helping cool the barn, and I was seated at the back near one of those large fans. This tip works extremely well to eliminate the background fan noise.
Hey Troy, here are the equivalents for PC: 1: Shift-P is the same 2: CTRL-A is in place of Command-A 3: CTRL-Shift-P in place of Command-Shift-P Side Note: Any time a mac user presses command, the equivalent on PC is CTRL Hope this helps.
Thank you Jeff! I was getting electrical interference on my audio and this has helped make my podcast sound a lot more professional. Kudos to you Sir 👌
I ran denoiser filter first, then did the procedure above and results were even better, this eliminated an echo-y sound I got previously, when just using technique above. thank you!
Random, but trying to get an answer from someone. How did you actually select the audio!? I can't seem to figure it out. It looks like he clicks and drags but that's not working for me.
Thank you so much for making an easy tutorial on how to do this. This makes it so easy to pull air conditioner sounds out and get on with my work. I really appreciate it.
This may be a dumb question, but how do I select just that piece of audio? It looks like you're clicking and dragging but that doesn't seem to work for me.
I tried this method but the denoiser in Premiere seemed to give me a much cleaner result and it was way quicker. I assume the 5 years of updates caught up haha
Wow thanks forgot how to do this and the video was quick and to the point. The room tone is gone but I'm nitpicking at the audio as it is now but it might have to remain the way it is it's still clear so that's good. Thanks again
Thank you so much!! I actually wanted to remove some stupid background music and add another one to my own liking and now I can do that without hearing the other overlapping music thanks to you as I played a little more with the buttons and adjustments! Super!
Thank you, thank you thank you!!! I agree with others that it does take out the ambient noise, but then creates an echo. I am wondering if I can just look up the steps to remove echo from audio to fix it. #fingerscrossed.
Is there a way to just lower the volume of the background noise rather than eliminate it altogether? I have some water fall noise I need to reduce, but not eliminate completely.
This isn't working for me. I isolated the ambient noise and followed your steps, but now my voice sounds really muffled. I made sure to only isolate a portion where there was noice...no voice. What could I be doing wrong? Also, I don't see Audition start to render the track after I click 'apply'. ?!

It is just click and dragging to select it on the time line. Check to see what tool you have selected or try and do right click select all and trim the area from there. (I'm no pro that's just my guess but the simple click and drag Is all I had to do I still use this tactic all the time)
HOLY CRAP THIS WAS AMAZING. LIKE.... jaw dropping amazing. I've gone through several tutorials and this is by far the best. Curious. What is the manual way of 'Control P'?
It'd be difficult to know what you're hearing without actually hearing it. Assuming that you filmed this in a room with lots of echoing in the first place that was untreated, what you're hearing is reverb.
WTF is command button ? it's working but you forgot teach people how to setting when the setting show up is turn noise reduce up to 100% and reduce by is 40 dB.some stupid guy gonna click apply right away without change the setting so it take no effect.
4 years later since you've posted this, and it still works like a charm.
Finally, a tutorial that doesn't last 15 mins long and still does the job....thanks a lot
I just tried this on an interview I did that had an air vent in the background... This works like magic. Thank you!
Note for anyone using windows: Control instead of Command! Awesome tutorial thank-you.

With those commands to remove the noise, these I take it are for a Mac, what is the equivalent for a PC? Thanks
Hey Troy, here are the equivalents for PC:
1: Shift-P is the same
2: CTRL-A is in place of Command-A
3: CTRL-Shift-P in place of Command-Shift-P
Side Note: Any time a mac user presses command, the equivalent on PC is CTRL

Thanks for the help and not making the video fifteen minutes for ad revenue. Very helpful!

AMAZING! THANK YOU... YOU JUST MADE MY DAY. SO EXCITING TO TRY THIS METHOD SOON!
Thank you Jeff!! You just made my meditation video a bajillion times better. 😍

This is a Jewel right here.thank you so much! Completely removed white noise from my audio.
Anytime! Thanks so much for watching. :)
hey, can you copy paste that setting on other audio tracks directly in premiere pro or you have to make that operation on each audio tracks?
This may be a dumb question, but how do I select just that piece of audio? It looks like you're clicking and dragging but that doesn't seem to work for me.
can this be done directly in premiere pro, without Auditions, considering the recent audio enhancements?
I tried this method but the denoiser in Premiere seemed to give me a much cleaner result and it was way quicker. I assume the 5 years of updates caught up haha
Isn't it amazing how technology evolves so quickly. :)

Wow!! That was amazing! It made such a difference to my video removing background cooler noise.
Hi, Jeff, quick question: after I clean up the track, how to do I then import it back into Premiere Pro? Thanks!
All you need to do is click save and exit and the new audio will render and replace on your timeline
This really helped with removing the hissing noise from my rode mic. Thank you!
Dude this rocks. Best tutorial I have watched in a minute!!
Beautifully done, Sir! Thanks for being short and to the point!
so darn good man.. no more f-ing around in premiere with noise reduction, this is much faster and a lot better :)
Is there a way to just lower the volume of the background noise rather than eliminate it altogether? I have some water fall noise I need to reduce, but not eliminate completely.
i tried to do a bunch of clips at once and then when i saved i listen and they dont play together smooth so how do i undo this effect????
nice thanks you, was trying to use the premiere pro adaptive noise reduction and it just would not remove the static noise this worked like a charm
This isn't working for me. I isolated the ambient noise and followed your steps, but now my voice sounds really muffled. I made sure to only isolate a portion where there was noice...no voice. What could I be doing wrong? Also, I don't see Audition start to render the track after I click 'apply'. ?!
Wow, this was so helpful and so concise! Brilliantly done!
How can I do it without the keyboard shortcuts?
How about removing the clockwork noise of an constantly ticking lens stabilizer?
Very helpful! "Command" key on Windows keyboard = CNTRL
Wow! this was just what I needed! Thank you Jeff!
Can I easily copy this to other audio clips without repeating the steps?
Everytime I do this I always get a huge echo on the audio...
Has anyone tried to remove a slight whispering voice in a background? Can Audition remove those kinds of sound as well? Thank you!
Thank you for your help Jeff.
This is like the Rascal® of audio clean up-I've regained my mobility thanks to Jeff and Adobe
#woah
This was incredible, thanks so much for posting!
No witty banter, no time wasting, just awesome content and teaching.
Incredible job.
TheLightAffect anytime! Thanks so much for watching. I can’t stand BS. Lol
Hi, I just tried this but it distorted my voice and added an echo. Any ideas? Thanks
That was amazing! You saved my video 😀
This was an awesome tutorial dude! Thank you for making this, it's really helped in a lot of my videos.
Ludicrously effective tutorial!
OMG this is amazing! thank you!! just fixed a hopeless case. thank you
Such a simple tutorial but soooo helpful

Yes, this is great. Worked like a charm. Thank you so much for the tip!
That sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't, it may make your audio sound very muffled. A Noise Gate may work better, just bear that in mind.
HOLY CRAP THIS WAS AMAZING. LIKE.... jaw dropping amazing. I've gone through several tutorials and this is by far the best. Curious. What is the manual way of 'Control P'?
If you meant "Shift + P", it's Effects - Noise Reduction/Restoration - Capture Noise Print
You're a star, thank you for this clear concise tutorial! :)
Awesome explanation - thanks!
Thank You SO Much, Really Helped Improve My Video :)
The beauty of it is that you can fine-tune as needed in Audition and use CMD-S to send it BACK into PrP.
Thank you, i was fustrated with my audio but this really helped
I was able to get rid of the air conditioning in the background, but now there's a bit of an echo. Any suggestions?
Easy, quick, and super helpful!
WOOOOOOOOOOOW! What a gift for a Saturday night! Thaaaanks, Jeff! I suffer, a lot, with barkings. I mean, I used to suffer!
Did not work...its Pr 2015 .... tell me about that....
yo this tutorial was spot on thanks
which are the commands for windows friends? does anyone knows it?
Command = Control.
IT REALY HELPS ME
THANKS YOU A LOT
So simple! Thanks!
This is an absolute life saver
Very helpful. Thank you for the video.
Really good, thanks
I've done this, but now my two female voices sound metallic. How do I get them to sound normal please
Thanks for this video Jeff, it was super helpful! :)
Ty
Amazing. Thank you!
when i do this the audio becomes very echoey, any tips on how i can reduce this?
It'd be difficult to know what you're hearing without actually hearing it. Assuming that you filmed this in a room with lots of echoing in the first place that was untreated, what you're hearing is reverb.
finally, a way that doesn't just use the denoise filter in premiere
This simply does not work for me, and I don't know why. No change whatsoever in the audio after applying it.
Thank you so much man!
This was awesome thanks!
THANK YOU!!
excellent video. it helped me
Thanks
Wow thank you!
WOW.... As an old sound guy, I get it. BUT still WOW I have not subscribed to AU, but might have to reconsider.
Isn't it an amazing platform? I really love how many tools we now have access to! :)
Wow this is it, thank you. You saved me.
This is awesome!
