The thing about being this obese is that therapy is needed to deal with the trauma that caused the weight gain. You don’t get to 600 pounds because you’re happy. They then need to be taught new coping skills.

Right? Sorry, I know it's late, but the first thing I thought when I saw this video was, "oh God, what are they gonna think/say", because Korea IS very into objective beauty and I'm thinking, if these girls are actually in/from Korea, they've probably never seen people this size before. Not to mention the Slatons are pretty much as stereotypical southern/'murica as it gets (in a fun/kind of cute way in Amy's case, lol). I was so happy to be proven wrong! This kind of kindness is what brings back my faith in humanity, during this period in particular.

I love how you mentioned the classic "they don't need to loose weight because they are already pretty" comment. Its a big fat lie. It's not a lie that they are pretty or not. But saying things like that doesn't help at all and we all know well that physically ugly people exists and they don't need our pity and lies. All they need is support, not a bunch of "you look great. don't worry they are just jealous of you. Be you." Positive lies can lead to negative outcomes and false confidence and could also make one person so full of themselves that they don't change for the better of their health and people around them. And what I ment about the people around them, I mean how it could distance themselves from friends and family who are worried about you and don't want you to die or maybe be a better person if you are an ass hole or say a hoarder. Bringing out positive lies will distance yourself from people and make things worse.

Remember when she said that Tammy is at fault? That was an outright lie. Mommy Dearest is at fault. The abuse she slung at those two girls while they were growing up is inexcusable and a large chunk of the problem. Yes, being a single parent is tough, but you can still do it without being an insufferable jerk. Abuse causes long-term health problems in a variety of ways. These two had the misfortune of winding up with a multitude of those health problems, through little to no fault of their own. It's the mother. She should've knocked her own pride down a few notches when it mattered. Now? Now she's beyond redemption; those two girls could easily lose a few hundred extra pounds by cutting her out of their lives.

The thing is, they were obese as children. I don’t see how the mother could say it isn’t her fault or that she has nothing to do with it when literally she is most of the reason they developed such awful eating habits. Eating habits aren’t something you can just turn off when you become an age where your diet is your responsibility. I’m 19 now and I’m still suffering from the consequences of being an obese child/teenager... I love my mom, but if she had paid more attention to my weight growing up, I wouldn’t have to fight against my food addiction every moment of the day to lose the weight.

The thing is, it’s not generally in the US.
Mental health is looked down on on different parts of the world. Some are more traditional and conservative, and they think that’s it’s just an excuse.
On the other hand, the media has SOOOO many, and I mean SOOOOOO SO SO MANY, different ways to portray mental health. It’s sometimes laughed at, other times it is overly-romanticized. Other times, it is over-exaggerated into this thing that it’s not.
People react differently to things they don’t understand or agree with. It sucks but that’s the truth of with-whether it’s in the American continents, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia. Whether mental health care is provided greatly and sufficiently or not, it won’t matter if the people involved are shite and have shite beliefs about the problem.

The Busy Bean Home Cafe not really... only along the coasts do we have good centers for mental health, or anything medical really. Middle of the country ends up having to travel miles for treatments, sometimes even to other states. Besides that doesn’t even matter if you can’t afford it, and most who need it are unable to pay for it as it’s often out of pocket for therapies.
So yeah maybe you should also do your own research before commenting things too....

The Korean girls bring a good point at the beginning, where cost of nutritious food in the U.S. is much more expensive compared to junk foods. However, these two sisters in the video buy at such a large quantity that they should be able to buy some veggies and eat less cards and red meat. Also, at that weight, it's not a good idea to exercise by walking. That will just hurt your bones, joints, everything else. She could start with simple arms movements/exercises and she will be able to increase her metabolism and lose weight gradually. The main thing to lose weight is eating less calories than the energy you expend per day. If slowly eat less and less calories each day, their body should adjust and they will continue to lose tremendous amounts of weight. Some people genetically have slower metabolisms, so it's alot harder to burn fat and they absorb everything. I wish them the best of luck. Consistency is always key. Nothing is substantial is done in a day. If you can build it in a day, you can also collapse it in a day.

I think the true problem might be convenience and marketing to make unhealthy foods look like "a bang for your buck." However, they are actually often more expensive than just plain ingredients bought with coupons. Buying ingredients you can freeze, pickle, ferment, and store can last you months but the upfront costs can appear daunting compared to buying fast foods/unhealthy foods frequently and accruing that amount or more over time. With a little know-how in cooking, you can make some great, healthy dishes that will last a long time on a dime. My mom is a living testament to that.

She suffered a lot, possibly her whole life. It's understandable that from her point of view, having to do so much herself, that her child is being irresponsible.
I am not overweight, but I have several health conditions that made it very difficult for me starting when I was 14. My mother also had many health conditions so you would think my parents would be understanding. But they weren't, they claimed I was lazy, that there must be something wrong with me. They assumed I was healthy and just had an attitude. To this day my father will accuse me of faking my emotions when he gets angry. Some people just can't empathize with others. @@nullakjg767 Sure, yes it is shameful to be greedy and gluttonous. However, their environment and their family really should've been there for them and taught them better and helped them instead of shaming them. As said in the video, they were living in poverty and fast food was the cheapest option for them to get a meal.
Having your social group constantly shame you and degrade you; drives you to something that can be used as a coping mechanism which in their case, was food so shaming really is going to help (I'm fine with self-shame because it can be used to give them more motivation but I do not agree with someone constantly being shamed). I really don't know why you are actually justifying borderline child abuse. It is not normal for a family to degrade their child. Additionally, who told you that self-harm is something to be proud of??? I really don't understand where you got that from. I've known plenty of people who have gone through self-harm and NONE of them are 'proud' of it. If anything they were ashamed by it and they did it from self-loathing and as a cry of help. This comment is the most BS I've read in a while.

(SPOILERS) Honestly, it was discouraging to me to see how Tammy's treatment was handled. Expecting a radical diet change that would result in her losing 60lbs right away to prep for surgery after a lifetime of detrimental eating was not realistic. Yes, the weight absolutely WOULD drop off of her if she were eating healthy foods in appropriate portions, but she needed time and help to get to that point. And when she lost 10lbs--probably the first time she'd seen her weight trending downward in years if not decades--she was shamed over not having lost ENOUGH weight. What she NEEDS is sustained therapy and attention to nutrition and eating habits. You can tell from the videos on her youtube channel that she's managed to keep off a little bit of weight from the show--maybe 20-30lbs? And thought she says the entire experience of being on the show has exhausted her (and it seems like she's making a genuine effort to expose herself to "healthier" foods, just not IDEAL foods), 99% of the comments she gets are fat shaming and concern trolling. 😭 I wish a registered eating disorder therapist that specializes in binge eating disorder would reach out and offer to take her on as a client for free. It really hurts my heart to see the way she's being treated--you can tell that she's such an intelligent and kind person.

not necessarily, i always see the claims that good food is too expensive in america so poor people end up having to buy junk food but from what i can see at my local grocery store healthy food is pretty inexpensive. i can get 3 broccoli bushels or whatever they're called for 2 dollars, 2 chicken thighs for 3 and some rice for about another 2. compare that which can make at least 2 meals with going to somewhere like mcdonalds where a combo meal cost around 7 or 8 dollars for a single significantly less healthy meal. I do agree the problems of obesity in america are multifaceted but people are often quick to claim eating healthy isn't as affordable as unhealthy and then compare sweetgreen selling salads for 13 bucks to mcdonalds selling a combo meal for 8 without even considering home cooking or take the price of groceries as a one time price and compare that to mcdonalds like a person only shops for 1 meal at a time when going to the grocery store.
