- At the end of 2022, the photography space was shocked by Pentax's announcement that they were developing a new film camera. Over the past few years we have received frequent updates about the new 35mm film camera project. This will be one of the first completely new analog film cameras developed by a major manufacturer since film's comeback. A few details about the camera that we know, the new Pentax camera will be a premium point and shoot camera, and it will shoot half frame film images.

It’s not the K1000 type SLR that some of us wanted, but, it is a great way to keep film being manufactured.
@@CalumetVideo not a necessary camera tbh. There millions of 35mm slrs in every mount. You can get a 35mm slr in every mount for 40 bucks on ebay or less in person. It's a financially terrible idea and would bomb badly. There's no way they could compete with srts and cheap ricohs build quality or price wise. If
They're half frame not a fortune and better than the Ektar combined with potentially cheap new lucky color film film will once again become even more popular and that's great for all of us
Definitely will buy this camera! I have an Olympus Pen FV and love that thing, so getting a modern film camera from a company like Pentax is a great step forward for film shooters.
I am excited about new film cameras, but this one is not for me. I can't wrap my head around half frame and the loss of image quality with enlargements. The camera orientation does not interest me. Maybe I'm too old school. Keeping film alive is great and happy for new shooters being inspired.
You have a point with enlargements; generally speaking though, every time I think about the resolution loss with half-frame, I'm reminded about the fact that some of the most beautiful motion pictures ever made were shot on Technoscope, Panavision, or Super35, which are basically half-frame.
I think to myself that above like 16mm resolution, your composition carries most of the weight.
Half frame is still 4 perf as the other commenter has pointed out. Some of the best movies ever made have been shot on that format. It produces a beautfiul look and grain structure is more profound. I've personally shot 400D is a vertical traveling half frame camera to replicate the look of Kill Bill with excellent results
I agree with the point about enlargements, but this camera will probably be fine for scanning and posting photos on the internet, or printing to 4x6 prints. I don’t think we can expect sharp images on anything larger than 5x7. Honestly, most people don’t print their images anymore, so this may keep the film manufacturing going.
@@CalumetVideo Respectfully I disagree about the printing size. The lens is really really important on half frame. It all comes down to what you're shooting on really, like the ektar for example won't be anywhere near as sharp as a 4 or 5 element lens. Like I said before I've used the "super 35" format and printed an image of mine on a 16x20 with a slight crop and it looks very sharp still even when I was using a 400 speed film. It was 48bit tiff scanned on a SP3000. I'm sure it'd be even sharper if i used a lower iso film. Sure the grain Is more pronounced but that's part of the recipe of film right?
The idea of getting twice as many shots per roll will be appealing to a lot of people. I don’t like it either personally but it makes sense.
Half frame I can live with, but zone focus - especially if it's the kind that's like flower, person, group, mountain instead of some kind of distance scale - is just a total interest killer for me.
I'm a weirdo, I like grain and limitations. The look of 110 looks really cool to me. Both landscapes and portraits. As someone who loved looking at old punk show photography and lofi film enlargements on posters, it gives me that old garage feel. Even up to like 90s grunge photography. My Pen F is one of my favorite cameras, excited to get my hands on this one.
I really love half-frames, though I'm not enjoying the plastic fantastic offerings I've tried, so having a new half-frame would be sweet. It's always cool to see new stuff put out there, so I'm happy to support it.
What Half Frame camera have you used?
Zone focusing is something that hints at them making a small body and a wide angle lens. 35mm maybe? Anything more than that and good luck hitting focus. In terms of pricing, I hope it to be under USD 300. The new Rollei 35AF will be around USD 600 to 800 but in terms of features, it will play in a different league. If this will be in the same price range, sorry…

I think it's a good idea it's a half frame. Really suits a point and shoot. And very high res scans are available at most labs nowadays. Very interesting.
Interesting to see the Pentax Renaissance.
Hopefully more manufacturers follow suit!

The more info I hear about it, the more disappointing it sounds. The camera seems like it is going to be a hyped-up but cheap attempt to capitalize on trends rather than provide something substantial to photography. Hopefully that impression is incorrect. Great video overview!
I think this camera is going to cost about $1,000 or more. I can't afford that but I can't wait to see how it looks like and how people use it. Been diggin' your videos! Great content. Groovy.

I really like Pentax. I have a K1000, K10D, and a K3 Mk III Monochrome. I doubt I'll get the half frame yet, though. Not when I'm thinking of stepping up to 4x5 large format.
I hope they also release a mechanical fullframe too

I want to support new film cameras but $5-700 is absurd. I just got a working Pentax 6x7 for that much with a 105mm f2.4.
Great video, so much information. I know that IG is low resolution so it doesn’t really matter that much when posting photos but it really seems like a waste of potential. Of course, I have yet to print a photo I’ve taken because I’m garbage. lol.
The fonts of the new pentax 17 is same as that of the medium format 67.

Over the years, Pentax has made quite a few very fine cameras and lenses of a few formats.
But perhaps the best 35 mm film camera which Pentax ever made is their Pentax K-1000.
Built as strong as a hockey puck, well designed, and easy to use.

Great to hear a new wind on camera may drop.
But not a fan of the half frame idea, think it will cull a lot of what is kind of a niche market, but time will tell..
If they wanted a half frame option, might have been a good idea to have an adapter of sorts to convert it from full frame to half frame like the Mamiya 6.
I also suspect the the 72 shots means most people will end up shooting and having it go through airport scanners instead of hand checking will end up with some fog, and image quality degradation of a half frame will mean likely that most people will be turned off by it. probably won't review well, or sell well.
Really hoping they make a 35mm version as well, it would likely sell and test far better.....
Marketing a zone focus camera to the newer generation is going to be difficult forsure.
yes but if you ever shot zone focus you realize that it is actually very easy to do :)

I think the success of the camera will depend heavily on the price. If it is more expensive than 300 EUR or USD, then only Pentax enthusiasts will buy it and no new customers, I fear. My personal limit will be 399 EUR.
I’ve got a bet that the lens on this is going to be pretty similar to the GR-III, considering APS-C and half frame have very similar image circle requirements, but just a theory. It would make sense for parts sharing but, we’ll see
day 1 purchase.

I have so many cameras including a half frame Dial 35 , the camera has quirky design language , a clockwork winding mechanism giving me auto advance of dozens of images and then you just wind it up again , it also allows me to do full manual settings , it allows you to chose shutter speeds and the camera will automatically adjust the aperture or if you pull out this little knob on the camera it allows you to adjust the aperture too giving full manual control
The camera isn’t in portrait orientation though that’s the only thing but it really isn’t difficult to just turn the tiny thing 😂
Don’t know if I’ll be purchasing Pentax’s new camera when it releases , mostly comes down to design and quality !!!
I too am excited for new film cameras, but I will pass on this one if the price is what you said it will be. I am much more interested in a remake of the Olympus XA or something along that size that is full frame with a 35 mm 2.8 lens. I would either like to have a rangefinder or auto focus. I just won’t spend big money on a camera that is limited to zone focusing.

Hmmmm… I just moved up to a 6x4.5 camera because I didn’t love the 35mm resolution I was getting. I may support it anyway but I’m skeptical of 1/2 frame.

Focusing system just put me off! Auto focus is an essential. Some of my noob friends and strangers wouldn’t have a clue how to use it

In any case, Instax has a chokehold on the marketing in India so any film camera is expensive.
I have a PenF and in reality I'll get closer to 78 or 80 shots! It's honestly the worst thing about the camera and I really need to have a go at bulk rolling shorter rolls. re: portrait as default, honestly, it's sort of "weird" that we all go tricked into 3:2 landscape being the default. Most photos are of people, and people are, more often than not, "portrait shaped", the heads especially!
A half-frame compact, automatic, autofocus, but manual advance camera? Genuinely weird. Sounds like they're chasing the ideals of the old Olympus XA, but half-frame like an old Olympus Pen. Like I said, sounds like it'll be genuinely weird. I think they need to also come out with a real, decent quality 35mm film scanner too. Major camera manufacturers have really dropped the ball on that and left it to some pretty dodgy companies.
Where they will built them ? Japan ? China ..? Quality control ?
Hard pass on the half frame camera. I would be all over a full frame camera.

And after the premium point and shoot they want to make an SLR. That's my understanding.
I don't recall anything about them wanting to make a p&s, but I know they want to do an SLR. My worry is their decisions on this are gonna kill their chance at a follow up
@@BradleySwainAwesome this is my concern also. Which is why I think if they get the price down to $200 maybe $300 then it has a chance. At $500+ it doesn’t have much chance.
No way they sell this camera for $500+ that price is counter intuitive to the idea of attracting new people to film. No ones going to buy it if it’s $300+ let alone 500.
I’d be willing to bet this camera comes in around $200. That’s about the price of the nicest Fuji instax camera and those sold like hotcakes.
This camera is probably a test for Pentax, if it sells well and they see a demand I bet they announce a “new” slr in the form of a modern spotmatic or k1000 which I see them selling for $500+ easily.

Half format makes a lot of sense with the rising film prices…but only if the camera has an excellent lens otherwise it is just unnecessary toy
they completely lost me at half frame, that just makes no sense, sure film prices are going up and i see your point about the general consumer, but depending on the price point this won't be for the general consumer it will be for film fanatics and i just think going half frame is a down right terrible decision.
I really don’t see how anyone needs this camera. There a millions of better used point and shoots out there for $20 all day long that shoot full frame with autofocus and many other useful features. This one sounds like the unserious, Holga, Instax type of junk they’ll sell at Walmart. But if they want to bring back a reliable medium format camer I’m here for it.
Instax is terrible and worse than almost everything and it’s the best selling film product out there. They are aiming to appeal to a broader audience with this first one - it’s certainly a risk.

Make a Manuel slr lol or medium format . People want good images … riding that stupid little camera wave to get people who aren’t into photography into it instead of actually contributing to the community
Makes NO sense at all. Who would actually want this when you can buy a "real" (used) 35mm camera that can accept interchangeable lenses for probably less money. You can buy a perfectly functioning Nikon FM2 (or similar from other prominent manufacturers) for $500-600 with a lens and you have the option of picking up virtually any focal length lens(es) you would ever want.
$500 plus for a camera with zone focus? Hard pass. I hope Mint does better

Pentax and Ricoh are messing up with this one . Who wants shit quality images anymore ? 35mm is already kinda not the best for today’s standards. I was interested at first but not so much anymore

NO, used MX cameras are not any good as they require expensive and very hard to find repair persons.
Design it with few if any gears or levers. Nothing that requires a mechanical tweak or calibration. Domo arigato.
I was hoping for a 35mm full frame camera like the SLR K1000 and maybe a 6x7 camera in the future. But at least this is a start.
