    @chineseal Thanks for the question. The diet and species of salmon affects Omega 3 levels, so the species type (Chinook vs Atlantic) is important to identify (not just farmed/wild).
    Because Atlantic salmon are a naturally oilier fish than all 5 species of Pacific salmon, and the Omega 3s are stored in its oils, Atlantic salmon generally contain more Omega 3s (Atl=~1.5-2.4 & Pacifics ~0.5-0.9 (EPA/DHA g/100g). Ref Friesen '08.
    The message is this - all salmon is a great source of Omega 3.

    Hi Craigvr, all farmers in BC have maximum density limits based on years of understanding what is best for the fish (oxygen availability and reducing stress). Pens are typically 97% water and 3% fish. Maximum final densities will be no greater than 15kg per cubic metre. In other words, 3 market size fish per cubic metre, but understanding they may school tighter than this, leaving extra space. The total number of fish allowed on site (biomass) is also science based and strictly regulated.

    Hi Bammer2001, we do supply to some retailers in Quebec although it's more likely that farms located on Canada's East coast will supply that market (Marine Harvest does not have farms on Canada's East coast). If you'd like to try our salmon, visit any Loblaws chains as they carry our farm-raised Atlantic salmon. We'll look forward to your feedback!

    @undofunction444 The short answer is 'yes'. We are actively involved in research to ensure we operate sustainably, which includes potential impacts to the surrounding environment. Similar to our benthic management and fish health management, we research and adaptively managing our operations.
    On a side note, you did ask your question just prior to this years return of Fraser River sockeye. If you weren't aware, this years return (2010) was the highest return in 100 years.

  • @MowiCanadaWest
    @MowiCanadaWest  14 років тому

    @cinamonpil In fact, we did not say "just because this years sockeye return was strong that....". We simply stated this as a fact. Just like high pink salmon returns in many rivers in 2009 and 2010 (Fraser river included). These are important facts, as are low returns, when discussing wild salmon conservation.
    And we agree that all of us have a short memory when it comes to salmon returns. Many people can't remember salmon returns prior to 20 years ago....

    @greentourism So, as you may have seen, what you haven't considered is that only a small part of fish's diet is meal/oil. You are referencing the yield only (8:1) and not then considering the fact that the fish's diet only includes 16% and 13% (meal and oil).
    Again, thanks for allowing us to clarify.

  • @MowiCanadaWest
    @MowiCanadaWest  13 років тому

    @greentourism Hi, thanks for asking for clarification on the fish in/fish out ratio of salmon. The formula used to determine the ratio is;
    (% fish meal in the diet + % fish oil in the diet) / (yield of fish meal (%) from wild fish + yield of fish oil (%) from wild fish) x Feed Conversion Rate = fish meal and oil used
    (16 + 13) / (22.5 + 5) x 1.2 = 1.265
    Wet/dry weight is considered and accounted for in the formula (yield).

    @MowiCanadaWest  13 років тому

    @greentourism Hi 'greentourism'. Our fish feed contains only about 15% fish meal, which his sourced from either trimmings of other processed fish, or from fisheries that are highly regulated and have been sustainably fished for decades now. This same fish meal is also used in other aqua feeds and for pigs, chickens and pets (cats & dogs).
    As for your question about sea lice, we would suggest you review our page on the subject on our website and if you have any further questions, please ask.

  • @MowiCanadaWest
    @MowiCanadaWest  13 років тому

    @strikeking07 Actually, farm-raised salmon are harvested prior to maturing - no steriods or additional hormones are used to raise our salmon.
    We respect the fact that you favour the taste of a wild salmon over a farmed, but it's important to note that there are many salmon species that are wild and farmed, so your preference is mostly likely a result of the species and not the growing method.

  • @MowiCanadaWest
    @MowiCanadaWest  12 років тому

    Hi 'Asenetic'; we hold back production fish for an extra year until they mature. Nearing maturity, they are moved to freshwater and are fed to appetite throughout the process. There is published research on this subject, but we are unable to link via UA-cam.

    Hi Waakkeuppp, there is a blog posting about our harvesting procedures on our website at Marine Harvest Canada dotcom. The blog titled "Ethical harvesting practices a priority..." was posted June 26, 2013.

  • @MowiCanadaWest
    @MowiCanadaWest  14 років тому

    @vanisleLP As you may know, Marine Harvest Canada currently operates 9 land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (closed containment). These systems grow our fish from egg to smolt size (~80 grams). Using this fairly new technology, we are interested to see if it is viable (social, eco and enviro) to grow Atlantic salmon to harvest size (6 kg) at a commercial scale. If successful, it would be the first in the world. We will have additional information posted on our website soon.

  • @MowiCanadaWest
    @MowiCanadaWest  14 років тому

    @darkmossie633 We can't provide links on UA-cam, but the Canadian government recommends that you "eat at least two Food Guide Servings of fish each week, and to choose fish such as char, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout, the kinds that are highest in omega-3 fats."
    The US FDA recommends to "eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury", including (farmed or wild) salmon.

    @greentourism As you subscribe to WWF, we thought we'd point out that WWF confirms the yields used to calculate fish in/fish out;
    FFER for fishmeal = (% of fishmeal in feed *eFCR)/(% yield fishmeal from wild fish)
    FFER for fish oil = (% of fish oil in feed *eFCR)/(% yield fish oil from wild fish)
    ...yield of fishmeal range from 22 - 27%.
    ...yield of fish oil from wild forage fish range from 3-7%.

If they do, I would like to know where we could buy a fillet of it and I'll give you a comment about the taste.

      Hi Aaron, our salmon are fed a diet that meets their natural dietary needs, but also sourced from sustainable land and marine sources. The feed ingredient list can be found on page 6 of our information booklet published at www.marineharvest.ca/globalassets/canada/pdf/sf-reference-doc/salmon-farming-in-british-columbia_updated-november-2016_marine-harvest-canada.pdf. That same page contains information about the the synthetic carotenoid added to the feed.

    Hi Bammer2001, mercury is not a concern in salmon - farmed or wild. That is becuase they are a relatively quick growing fish and don't accumulate much metals over a short period of time. Levels may increase as a fish gets older (called bio-accumulation). Health authorities and experts also recognize the very low levels of mercury in salmon.

    How do you collect the fertilized eggs? I understand that salmon need to swim back to mineral water (under starvation conditions to maturate). So, do you starve them to allow them to maturate? Is it necessary? Do you have some research going on about this subject? Thanks!

    Based on our low fish meal inclusion, fish in/fish out ratio are about 1.265 to 1. So, about 1.26 pounds of anchovy etc or fish tailings from processsing waste is used to produce 1 pound of salmon. This math formula can also be found online at the same website linked above.

    @MarineHarvestCanada One can not say that just because this years sokeye return was strong that open pen fish farming operations have no impact on wild stocks. In a weaker return an impact would be more noticeable. The inquiry will help clear up who or what was a major contributing factor to in the 2009 collapse.
    On a side note, 100 years ago every years return was close to the what we saw last year. Its easy to forget what things were like 20 years ago let alone 100!

      Hi Craig, we removed your additional comment due to offensive language. Craig Kasberg Your article about started by talking about the health benefits of Omega 3s. You failed to mention the 1200 mg of Omega 6s in farmed salmon, or the health issues that come with that. Your ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s is just as important to get the benefits. Furthermore, alexandramorton.typepad.com/alexandra_morton/2013/12/dear-whole-foods-toxins-in-your-farmed-salmon-1.html

      @MowiCanadaWest  10 років тому +4

      Craig Kasberg Hi Craig, Atlantic salmon provides a rich of Omega 3s, and also a very healthy (low) ratio of Omega 6 to 3. The latest nutritional profile is published on our website showing the healthy Omega 6 to 3 ratio of 0.66: www.marineharvest.ca/product/seafood-and-health/. Thanks for asking for clarification.

    • @MowiCanadaWest
      @MowiCanadaWest  10 років тому +2

      Craig Kasberg
      Hi Craig, to clarify, the levels of PCBs found in all salmon species (farm-raised or wild-caught) is roughly 99% lower than National health authorities' level of concern. www.marineharvestcanada.com/documents/Nutritional_value_of_British_Columbia_Farmed_Salmon_MHC.pdf.
      You also inquire about medicine use at Marine Harvest Canada: unlike other terrestrial meats, our low medicinal use is fully traceable, can only be administered by a veterinarian, and amounts are made available to the public. See this news release (including recent data) about the subject here - www.marineharvestcanada.com/news070114.php. Thanks for asking for clarification.

      @KC-gh5hw 9 років тому

      +rakitipakiti It's kind of funny that they're saying "No ISA" has bene confirmed, but they refuse to test the ISA from other laboratories around the world ran by the world's most recognized and expert scientists who are dedicated in researching ISA and other salmon diseases and say "No ISA" after testing from their "own" lab, which is under their control. It's kind of funny that there were over 4 laboratories that confirmed the positive ISA contamination from their salmon from exactly that salmon farm, but they;re saying no ISA? Was that a coincidence?
