  • In this video we tell you the TRUE expenses of owning a boat. How we bought a 16 year old boat for $16,500 and now have $100,000 into it. My dad and I sit down with you and tell you almost all the expenses our boat has incurred over the last 5.5 years of us owning it. We've kept a detailed ledger of every expense and time we've used the boat.
    Our boat is a 2002 247 Edgewater

When I'm 90 years old and the nurse in the retirement home is changing my diaper, I don't want to look back and think "I wish I had bought a boat" You can't take it with you, but you can make priceless memories with your family and friends. Truly worth every penny.

Michael Campbell, so well said. Life is to live and those who have never spent a day on the ocean fishing, diving exploring, sightseeing, snorkeling, etc. have never lived.

Or if you put $100,000 in a money market account in 7yrs it will double, ive allways wanted a boat but I don't like debt, I see you have to know how repair yourself or his book would probably read $200,000.

@@DIYDaveT I didn't say that it allways goes up but average 30yr history is 12% thats making money, been wanting a boat forever but when I see videos like this its just don't right depressing. And the prices of new boats over $100,000 can't be justified and with that new American policy implemented by biden usa last this country gonna suffer and a boat will be the 1st to go. 2-3mpg @$5 a gal for fuel thats horrible. What do u get for investment some memories

As long as you really do enjoy it so many buy them and never use them. Not what they thought and they just sit never being used you got to really enjoy water and the work that is involved with owing one I bet most end up sorry. And taking a big lost at the end. I know it not for me that is for sure. I would buy something cheap at first and make sure it what you want. Even the people that I know that love boating got sick of the money that’s involved. For this guy the money might not be a big deal but most got to think about it.

I too purchased a used boat a year ago, 2004 HydraSports Vector 2400cc, after a year long search and struggle between buying new or used. Plan was to fish it for a year then do some upgrades..........after starting to add new spreader lights.......ended up with all new wiring, lights, electronics, radios, antennas, all new pumps and hoses and finally a repower from an 04 Yamaha 300 HPDI to twin 2019 Honda BF150s. After doing all the work, except repower, ourselves, I’m all in at around 90k, no liens and couldn’t be happier, the Vector is a Beast of a Hull and everything else but the toilet and trailer is new. This is my first offshore boat and we’ve enjoyed several great fishing trips since the repower in September and I’m looking forward to many great trips to come! Love your videos, you’ve got awesome friends and family! Have a great 2020!

A good idea to reduce the waxing frequency is to get the entire boat Ceramic Coated. Its makes a huge difference in keeping it clean and looking amazing. Its a well worth expense that lasts for years and makes the boat actually shine and look great also. It also helps with the bottom and keeping it in the water all the time. Because its literally a sealed barrier that's 100x better and harder than was. Its completely sealed and I have friends that have done it and say they will never go back.

You should go through and add up how many of each fish you caught and how many lobsters. Id be interested to know a calculation of how much your food ended up costing. Id also consider paying for entertainment.
Movies cost $13 for 2 hrs. So if it were me, for entertainment alone id figure 7.50/person/hour.
Youd have to also include just a rough estimate for whatever bait/equipment.

Leaving the boat in the water continuously cost you a lot more than you think - continuous contact with salt water leads to rapid corrosion of almost everything - including the gas tank and all wiring. You should invest in a simple lift mechanism for your dock. this is why so many owners use them.

Wow, very interesting video . I am thinking twice now to own a boat. One suggestion is instead of keeping record in the book, you could save it in electronic document in phone, tablet, or pc. It has several advantages. For example, you could search yellow tails, then it will shows you in a second instead of minutes. You could print the whole record if you want. You can back up the record and don't need to worry about losing it. Etc. You got my point

Just an idea for yall to consider....my All State boat insurance is significantly cheaper and includes Tow Boat US and Roadside Trailer Assistance too. I only insure for $5k and it costs about $200/yr but it may be worth looking into!

Started following yours and Viks channel. Moving to Florida and looking to get a boat pretty close to this price range. This video was so informative.

I know you did this video a while back, but I just watched it and have to say you and your dad did a great job. My question is how much did you save not having to buy fish in 5 years?

Great break down on owning a boat. I'm like Brian, get it replaced right so that your boat doesn't leave you hanging. Yeah, you can get by for a little while "jerry rigging" stuff, but in the long run, seems to cost more.

Repowering the boat twice seems abit steep to me, but loved the video and glad for all your good times in the boat!

I have owned my share of boats over the years. I never kept records like you did , great Idea I think but I have had so many good times I don't regret any money I have ever spent. You can't put a price on great family and friend times and memories. Money well spent. I think if you purchase a boat you should be prepared to spend some money, just how it is. Start small and work your way up if you have limited finances, I have enjoyed ever boat I have ever owned that would include my 12 foot car topper back in the early 70s . Your on the water with friends and family having fun and making memories. Take care

This was a good honest video. I have had similar issues with my boat. I am a mechanic so I do a lot of the work myself. However it all adds up. But I would trade a min of the time I get to enjoy it with my friends and family.

My brother had a 35 foot cruiser. He sold it three years after the purchase. Between the initial cost, insurance, fuel (marinas always cost more), covered slip, having it taken out of the water in the fall and put back in come spring, it was a money pit. The old saying is true...best two days of owning a boat? Day you buy it and day you sell it. Or...definition of a boat? A hole in the water into which you pour money.
