- First step on my FJ Cruiser build is a lift kit and here are the three options I'm considering. Let me know which route you think I should go in the comments!

Thank you for breaking all that down and explaining differences and Pros/Cons of each option..New FJ owner here, very helpful. 👍
Thanks for this one Mike! You’ve given me lots of food for thought on lifting options👍
Happy to help!
I’m running stage 1 icon suspension on my 2010 fj cruiser with total chaos upper control arms on 315x75x16 .. over 30k miles with no issues .. smooth ride .
Did you do UCAs and LCAs? What wheels are you running?
Of the suspensions you mentioned. I’d go the extra and get the adjustable Fox. I had adjustable from coil overs on my last 4runner and you really can tweet it they way you want it. I loved them. I now have a 4r Pro with Fox and they are pretty damn nice for factory.
Anything Bilstein is good value for the money. I love my Dobinsons lift on my Tacoma and highly recommend them!
how long have you had the Dobi's? I've been considering a move to their IMS or MRA setup...
Also curious about the Dobinsons lift. I do a lot of desert diving with rough washboard roads & large rocks.
Running 6112/5100 on my Tacoma myself. Though it was really stiff at first but used to it now. Took it on a small gravel road and felt nice
Your video just helped me make my decision to pass on Stage 5 Icon, thank you 👍🏼.
I have a 2014 TTUE FJ and 2 days ago I went to a shop and this is what they recommended...
TAP- Fox 2.5 Tacoma Coil overs
TAP- Fox shocks 985-24-124 Fox 2.0 performance series smooth body IFP shock
CAM- Camburg Toyota Tacoma PreRunner/4WD 05-17 performance 1.25 uni-ball upper arms
Differential shim kit
Blistering 1.75 rear lift springs
BMC
They said they won’t install Icon kits anymore, or lift FJ’s more than 2 1/2”, (unless it’s a 6” lift etc.) because it causes drivetrain misalignment issues. 98% of my driving will be Highway miles, but I really wanted to go at least 2 1/2 front and back. Especially if I add steel bumpers/winch,/etc.
Thoughts???
It will look great even with 2.5 inches. Also, jealous of your 2014 TT! I tried to buy one but they were all so dang expensive and sold too fast so I gave up and decided to save some money!
@@DrivenCompanion I worked at Toyota when they came out, so I was able to get one.
@@jimcrawford7169 I know I’m late to this but I just purchased my 2014 ttue last December. I know I comes stock with fox shocks and pretty good suspension. What did you end up going with?
Last year I added the 6112 s to my 2008 xterra, beautiful ride, great shocks.
They sent them to me pre assembled and set on 2 inches of lift.
It was just plug and play, plus an alignment.
Did install myself. Took about 3 hours total.
Price was 900.00.
I have Icon suspension under my Tacoma with apprx. 40k miles and 0 problems. Also running 305-70-16's.
Perhaps I got unlucky but still make me reluctant to use them again.
I have a 2inch lift with Rancho shocks and stock coils. I'm happy but then I went from stock to the upgraded system without any other comparisons.
I would personally like to see a fox review. I would like to go with that fox setup for my 4runner, but may end up getting the fox 2.0 because its cheaper. I had the fox 2.0 on my last truck and I loved them.
How was the ride quality on your last truck? I really want the 2.0 for my FJ
I think the 6112/5160 is the way to go for on road and off road performance. They should last longer as well. 5160 isn’t much harder to install and is a better match to the 6112. Set your clips one or two higher on the driver to level driver/pass.
Fox would be worth it only if you’re planning to be off-road more than on.
Totally agree on not going with the 315s. 285s is more than enough for modest off-roading. If you’re thinking an all terrain consider the FALKEN AT3W. Not enough reviews on those and they are an excellent tire with a lot of cool tech built in. Amazingly quiet for an aggressive AT as well.
My FJ seems to sit level. I'd worry it would be uneven with setting the driver side 1-2 clips higher.
Okay. You mentioned in the video a positive of the FOX suspension was the ability to add more preload to one side to level out any side to side lean. My point was that this can also be done with the 6112s. It’s actually recommended by Bilstein to do this.
I have an 07 that I’m looking to lift as well and I’m debating between the Pro-comp K5074B which I believe is on sale for $545, comes with front and rear shocks and springs or the Bilstein 5100 with front and rear shocks and OME front and rear springs for $765, they are both a 3” lift.
Old man emu is good stuff
I went with an Ironman kit, I’m loving it
Old man emu are well liked for FJs.
I believe Icom is going through some sort of QC issue, along with kings, due to their spring snapping. And probably also fox. Not sure on that but yea.
Have you thought about a Toytec lift?
I hear good things about the Radflo's; did you look into those?
I haven't
Had OME on my FJ and it was great and cost less than a grand
I know its been four years, but did you have any problems with it with ride height?
@@jacksonwalker3278 not at all. Sat perfect and rode great up until I sold it last year
What exactly is making you not even consider Old Man Emu or Dobinsons? Both are phenomenal options that are valved progressively. Much more comfortable ride than Icon or Bilstein's digressive valving (which are better for high speed desert racing).
Like another viewer said you don't really need a remote reservoir, do you? Unless you're doing high speed washboard roads for extended periods or taking tons of bumps repetitively for long periods of time you're better off saving that money for different additions. That being said it doesn't seem like money is an issue to you. ;)
I looked at OME briefly but lean toward the Bilsteins side by side. I also considered Dobinsons when I did my Tacoma but I seem to recall them being pretty expensive.
@@DrivenCompanion Hmm, I wonder if there's some import cost discrepancies between the states and Canada. Here the cost for a comparable Donbinson's lift is typically under Old Man Emu, if not similar.
However if you even briefly considered 6112s or Fox with reservoirs, I'm not sure what you're worried about. Excellent quality, excellent customer service (which I've heard is lacking for Fox), competitively priced, and of course anywhere you purchase from can preassemble coilovers.
after watching your video, I am leaning towards FOX, but how would you compare 2.0 to 2.5?
what do you think?
I believe they are basically the same shock but the 2.0 is only a 2" lift and I'd like a little more
OME and Dobinsons are the best budget lifts for FJ
hey, i just got my 3 inch procomp suspension lift kit installed but dont like the leveling. if i get after market uca, will i be able to throw on a 2inch or 2.5 inch spacer lift on the front with my lift??
Do coils and there a lot of good companies I like bilstein I would have different on all 3 do comparison vid
I doubt you’d be using these to the point of extreme heat fade very often if ever. Don’t get lured into things you don’t actually need.
If Alex Trebek says it it must be true! Jokes aside though I completely agree - the large majority of people will not need a reservoir.
What option did you choose?
I went with skinny tall. 255/80R17's brings me to 33.1" in height. Very happy with the height and performance. My ICON drivers coil and passenger rear leaked at 5k miles. and now my passenger rear they rebuilt is leaking again after 9k miles. Will probably have the rear replaced with another brand. Disappointing.
Sorry to hear that! My Icon's on my Tacoma failed after less than 2K miles as well.
Hey man how has this fr held up I have an opportunity to buy an 07 with 38k for15k
38K for 15K? You better pull the trigger quick! zero problems with the FJ in the time I had it
Look a eibach I know they offer Tacoma and 4Runner not sure about fj
Replace those Icon's with KINGS- they don't call em that for nothin!
If they weren't so expensive! I'd love to try a set someday.
@@DrivenCompanion you get what you pay for right ?
Enjoy wearing out and leaking from your differential.
