Great work i remember my dad getting on of these and it didn't run that great from new so might be worth me taking it apart and see if it has similar issues, thanks for sharing. Tom
Hey Dan I'd recommend that you add solder wick to your tools to use for older models. It is thin copper tape that you heat with a soldering iron and absorb old solder then discard. It's the ideal tool to use in this case!
Heljan must be the most mercurial manufacturer in the industry: it mixes genius and legendary smooth running with some "schoolboy errors" when it comes to design choices. A very innovative and clever repair. The clicking sound reminded me of the sound from my ancient Mainline Warship, but thankfully replacement cogs were much easier to find.
Super repair. It's a shame spares appear to be difficult to get. I had a similar problem with a Hornby Standard Class 4 where I had to adapt a Star Class gear. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.
I have one of these, and it's the worst QC I've seen. Which suck because I love the model. A full rebuild of pickups and a stay alive is required. The disassembly process was horrid. Great video, great solve. My model was brand new and didn't come with bands. Is it possible someone has added washers to it?
I have a Heljan Lion, Falcon, Kestrel, Hymek and Western and all run very well. Lion didn't run well and I sent it back to Heljan in Denmark and they fixed it free of charge and refunded all the postage. Sam of Sam's trains tends to be a bells and whistles reviewer or if it doesn't have the lot it's no good. He often tells viewers how he bought this model out of his own money as if that's something unusual without realising that's how we ALL buy them. For me the trouble is that models are getting more complicated especially in their electrical set up which seems to be made more complicated than it needs to be. The Chinese models are notorious for failing electrics within models as another well known repairer with a YT channel up the top end of the UK may agree with.
@@ringmastermodels Heljan Diesels are in my experience excellent and reliable. I have the Heljan/Hattons Class 28 MetroVick Co-Bo and also the Baby Deltic both of which are superb. Sam's Train's is as much anti-Heljan as much as he is up Accurascales backside. I unsubscribed from his channel when his biased arrogance took over transparency.
Great repair Dan. The pannier tank is performing well on my layout. Thank you again for getting it running

Nice one alearning curve cheers thanks Patrick Quinn IRL
Not your typical strip down and fix, but well done for getting to the bottom of it 👍👍.
Great video Dan!
You did very well to sort this locomotive out. These sort of problems should never have been passed on to unsuspecting owners by Heljan.

Gees, having to buy an entire chassis just to get one small nylon gear 😮 Did you try contacting Heljan directly ?

I haven't seen that particular Sam's review....but a motor held in place by RUBBER BANDS ??? Sell it for spares or repairs and make do with a 57xx 🤣🤣🤣
Whilst he may have been on point in this case. Sam's Trains is typically anti-Heljan.
Most of us are, to be fair. Heljan have a well earned, bad rep!
