- This is part two of the historic "Storm of the Century" or "Blizzard of 1993" in Alabama.
During this clip, which was recorded between 10:15 p.m. and midnight, wind gusts were 37 and increased to 41 just before midnight as the storm officially became a blizzard. Thundersnow was reported for the first time around 11 p.m. Thundersnow was also reported in Huntsville and Mobile at the same time. Kevin Collins reported 4-6" of snow just before midnight.
Meteorologist James Spann and Kevin Collins of WBRC 6 report on this historic storm along with news anchors Scott Richards and Brenda Ladun. - Наука та технологія
A I loved when you could pick up ch.6 on the low end of an FM radio. We had that in my neck of the woods. Helpful during many winter storms.
I was living on the west coast of Florida when this hit. I remember looking up at the sky shortly before midnight, and the WHOLE sky was flickering with blue lightning. It was like a tidal wave in the atmosphere.
James Span became a national figure for his coverage of the 2011 tornado outbreak (you can find it on You Tube).
His work during that outbreak likely saved dozens, or even hundreds, of lives.
altfactor He's always been a dedicated meteorologist. Our motto in Bham is..."if James says it's coming, take cover"!!!😃
that brought a bigger light to him but he's always worked that hard. The days before 4/27/11 there wasnt wx cams or a wide spread coverage. things after then have improved much much more since then as well.
Living in the Graysville/Brookside area at the time.I was 8 years old when this happen. At that point in time I was also the only grandchild. My mom, dad, 3 Aunts, & 3 Uncles all went and stayed with my grandma on my dad's side for a week. She is the only one that had a fireplace, gas electric stove & water heater. Even though I was the only child at the time we still had a blast! I made snow cream for the first time, we had a family snowball fight, & we made a family snow man. I'll never forget the Blizzard of 1993!
ChEsHy85 I was 8 yrs old too!! Birmingham childhood memories! Man, it was amazing from a southern child’s perspective!
I remember well. I was 11 years old. I watched my family home burn to the ground and there was no way for help to get there. Phone service was down, no water, and no power. I just thank God we all survived.
Makes us both wish that there would've been Cellphones back then, isn't it? All we'd of had to do, was buy a Generator, and some Gas to run it.
As the old saying goes:Any Port in a Storm!
I remember when this happened. My brother and his family were living in our old family home in Gate City. He told me they had had to go up on the roof to shovel snow off - a foot and a half!
I was living in North Carolina at that time, and we were waiting for the storm to track in our direction.
Where I lived, we got only a few inches, but enough to make sledding possible, and foster snowball fights. However, further to the North, the snow was much heavier and deeper, closing the interstates, this trapping my husband at work for a couple of days.
I had to work that night and because my boss messed up I had to stay until 2 a.m.. I ran off the road and popped a tire just 2 miles from home and drove on a flat to a friends house close by. About 4 a. m., I decided to walk to my house. It was surreal. Everything was covered. Couldn't tell where the road ended and peoples yards began. No mechanical sounds like cars or trains, just silence. It was like being on an uninhabited planet all by myself.
I remember this Birmingham City was like 16 to 17 inches of snow
I was 19 and living in Jacksonville, Florida at this time. We had huge Thunderstorms with green lightning, hail and damaging winds, even had snow showers behind the front, it was a very powerful storm to experience. I will never forget that long, stormy night!
I can pretty much guarantee ya, that anybody that lived through this nightmare of a Storm, will never forget it. I certainly won't! I was stranded in Cobb County, Georgia, along with a friend of mine. We were supposed to come back to Staunton, Virginia, which is where I live, and we were staying at his Father's house. The next day, though, we were supposed to take off, to come back home. Didn't happen. We were stuck down there for an extra 4 days! If we had started to come home, we would've been stranded out on the highway! We decided to stay, until the coast was clear...so to speak.
I remember this clearly. I was 14 and thought it was great. I still check out the pictures I took and it seems unreal. Biggest thing I remember was the thundersnow. Thankfully we had gas cooking and water heating because our power was off for more than a week.
I was here in Atlanta when it hit. On Friday evening at 6:00 PM, the barometric pressure was 30.02 inches. At 6:02 A.M. the following Saturday, it had dropped to 27.10 inches of mercury! I knew something was really different, because when I awoke minutes earlier, both ears were plugged, and it felt like my head was about to explode. I was very nauseous, and both knees were so painful that I had difficulty climbing and going downstairs.
I remember this I was 79 it stayed on ground a while and power out for days. We went snow tubing and skiing
The snowfall projections shown at 1:20, ended up being more than that in many areas across the state. Of course, Birmingham saw more than a foot, officially 13 inches, with some portions up to 20 inches. My brother was in Troy, they got more than 2 inches. I lived in Montgomery at the time and my brother, who was on spring break (thank goodness because he went to college in Chattanooga, TN, which was hit even harder than Birmingham), was in Troy and the roads between Montgomery and Troy (mainly U.S. 231) were closed. I was wanting snow but was very dissapointed when the wind made it too dangerous to go out and play in.
Loving Brenda's hair and earrings!!!
This storm was the one of the most costliest storms in US history.
Im here because of Hurricane Sandy feeling Nostalgic about the massive snow forts i built that winter, we're talking multi room 2 stories here people! One of the best times of my childhood tbh! lol!
i remember this stayed up smoking pot all night.Just got a new 5.0 mustang living life man.i miss them days..Nothing like it.I wont to back in time and do things over
It really was like a tropical storm in the middle of the Winter with just the perfect cold to make it a really BIG SNOW STORM.
March 1993 and April 27, 2011 are two generational events that I pray we never see again. I hope I am pushing up daisies by the time something akin to either one of those events happens again!
I remember that snow quite well we lived in center point at that time had never lost power in any storm well to say the least it was quite an event we had to dig a path in the back yard for the dogs To go out what a weekend it was!
Back during analog days, when you could listen on 87.7 FM radio.
This is an amazing video...looks at James' hair...brings back so many memories...love it!!
Thanks man, just a lot of wind. Didn't even lose power.
Cool the weather guy was standing on top of the world!
Thundersnow in Montgomery too.
We had 2.5 feet in Hokes Bluff,Ala before it was all over
Same with us in Gadsden-RBC...
I love you James Spann.
Good to see your doing allright from sandy. As I was watching the news I thought sucks to be you guys. Then I thought oh dam you and bo live out that way. Not that I know you guys all that much, but we do have a eqoa connection. :)
wow! James can walk on water!
We got 18 inches of snow in Parrish.
I was 3 years old when this hit, in Hampton roads, I don’t think we saw much snow here
What was that thing to the west of this storm?
I wish the engineers at this station would bring back "walking on the weather" as they called it.
I live in Canada this is normal between November and early April .
We had fifteen years of average snowfall in a day and a half in Birmingham
30 year anniversary coming up.
hi on the 30th anniversary!!
Hairspray Ladun!!
Oh I was there
Bqck in the day when snow existed
I was pregnant with my 3rd child and he came 10 days later.
Unlike the Northeast and Midwest, Alabama isn't prepared for severe winter snow events like this.
altfactor You can not prepare for an event like this regardless of your normal capabilities or geographic location.
That's why buildings, not built to withstand the weight of the snow and ice, collapsed. Major damage!
@@buymy92accord Yeah, even Syracuse, New York, a location where heavy snow is not unusual, had record snow!
Pre-Breast Cancer days at WBRC Channel 6.
Seems like it was yday!
the fact that they shutdown the interstate because of 5 inches of snow makes me lol.
It’s Alabama dummy
It was Bush's fault
horse shit OBAMA fault
ljbew
You're both wrong. It was Hamilton's fault.
This was when Clinton was in office.,This storm brought everyone to their knees...but not Lewinsky, who already was
@@zl1David Clinton had only been in office less than 2 months. He beat incumbent president George H.W. Bush 4 months earlier in the 1992 presidential election.
